MacBook Pro C2D 17" auto restarts

Got a MBP 17'
So far when I put it to sleep by closing the lid the MBP restarts.
only has happened 2x
Both times it was asleep and I heard the start chime, opened it it was restarting.
anyone else run into this?

Hi Guys,
The answer to your concern is this: (at least this is what happened to me)
Sometimes if the lid is too tight when closed or too loose it triggers the magnetic latch that tells the computer to sleep or to wake. Sometimes it has also restarted the computer.
One test is to put your MBP to sleep, press the center of the lid (not too hard) but hard enough to put some pressure. Check if your computer awakens. You can also put your finger inbetween the display and lift up slightly. Check and see if it awakens.
At any rate, I called applecare and they replaced the latch "system" and some other stuff - It doesn't do it now.
I really think it has to do with some displays and latches being mounted too tight or too loose.

  • New MacBook Pro C2D Startup issues

    Hi,
I have my MBP for 3 weeks now and normally leave it on all the time (on and off the AC) For the most part it will wake up from sleep just fine.
In the last 3 nights I turned the MBP off before I went to sleep.
When I tried to boot in the morning the machine makes the regular DVD noise but it will keep doing this noise for 3 times, the light on the front will turn on but the machine will not start. There is also no startup chime. No video. When I pressed the power button to turn it off and then on, it will do the same.
I had been thrugh nightmare with a first generation MB so I had an idea on what to do -- I reset the PRAM and it starts fine.
This has been happening 3 mornings in a row. (I don't have anything connected to the MB other then the AC adapter.
I repaired permissions, went throguh the hardware test, took the battery out, checked the Apple website for firmware updates, and although there was firmware update 1.2 for MBP on 11/13, after launching it, I get a messge that tells me that my computer doesn't need the update.
I get all kinds of weird behaviors and the MBP will become very slugish... the highlight was today while burning a DVD in Toast none of my applications will launch, every application I would click on the dock will just bounce about 20 times and then stop. I couldn't even relaunch the Finder and ended up pressing the power button to force it to shut down. mind you, It restarted fine.
I read in one OLD thread here on the Apple forums that someone had similar problems with a MB and it was resolved by the firmware update.
Does anyone has similar issues or have any idea why my machine will act like this? I rather try to resolve it myself before I call Apple care or go to the Apple store.

    MacBook Pro C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks for the response.
Yes, I reinstalled the OS (clean install)
The issues with starting up in the morning still consistant.
It appears that if I shut down and restart right away, there is no issue- it's ok, but if the machne is off for awhile it will not boot on the first time.
I left my MBP off all day and took it to the Apple store after work.
The MBP will not reboot at first which really surprised the guy who claimed to be head technician. He kept insisting that's it's a 3rd party software issue, and I was saying, how come a 3rd party software will affect the booting of the computer? ( you can't even here the chime!)
He suggested that I will go home and clean install OS X again, and this time not to install anything else on it. The test is on. I did a clean reinstall. The machine will be off tonight, and we'll see what will happen in the morning!

Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro has been randomly restarting itself and showing a grey sceen with the text "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
I've googled and read all sorts of things saying remove everything from Login Items, it still happens. Everything I've tried has done nothing. Just in case it helps, here is my latest kernel panic log from Console:

It looks as if you may have the dreaded 'bad GPU' that shipped with some versions of the 2010 model. See - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US.
Use the "Contact" Apple techs link and see if your model may be one affected. If it is, you'll qualify for a free logic board replacement from Apple.
    Good luck,

  • How Necessary is PRAM battery on MacBook Pro (c2d intel 2.13, model a1211)

Hello Everyone, I stupidly broke the socket/clip where the pram battery attaches to the logic board on my Macbook Pro (c2d Intel 2.13). Unfortunately, since the socket/clip is a surface mount component and the way it broke (I don't see solder pads) I'm unable to re-solder the clip back on to the motherboard. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about (borrowed from someone else who apparently did the same thing): http://yfrog.com/6ximg0870nj
My first question is if anyone knows how vital the pram battery is to a Intel Macbook? It seems that the laptop works fine without the pram battery. Is the battery only necessary to retain pram settings if the main laptop battery is removed and the power adapter disconnected?
Second question is whether there is any alternative to repair the logic board other than get an entirely new board? The laptop is recently out of warranty (Applecare expired earlier this year) and I don't believe that Apple would have covered this since I caused the damage myself.
Third question(s) is whether it would cause any problems to use the logic board out of a c2d 2.33 a1211 macbook pro (I can get my hands on one for a pretty reasonable price)? The only difference I can see between the two boards is the clock speed of the main processor and the amount of video ram. Would there be any advantage to using this logic board? Doesn't seem like the speed bump and video ram would do to much.
Thanks in advance for any comments/help you can offer.

Much obliged. So it sounds like the only time this will be an issue is if I disconnect the regular battery and the power supply at the same time. The rational thing to do here is to just live with it rather than blowing hundreds on the new logic board and risking additional damage during replacement.
I just wish I wasn't so OCD about this. Bothers me a bit to know that something is wrong with the laptop even if it doesn't manifest itself on a day to day basis.

  • Macbook Pro C2D is beeping, scratching, and cursor is freezeing

I am having the same problem as others with regards an irregualar faint beep coming from the left side of my MBP C2D that I just purchased. In addition, I notice my cursor freezing up for a fraction of a second from time to time. Also, there is unusual hard drive movement at times causing a scratching sound. Strange stuff, and I can't seem to get an answer from Apple as to what this is, (especially in light of all these postings regarding the same isssues). Was wondering if anyone has been able to get any kind of answer to these issues???
Macbook Pro C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   What the __ is this?

Bump. Anyone have any ideas on this?
I "shut it off" last night, but when I turned it on again tomorrow, it turned out it didn't quite shut down?
It booted to the grey log-in screen, basically.
I've also come to the realisation that my charger isn't registered (the LED isn't orange/green like it usually is), and I can't get a "battery status" (I'm sure it has another name, I just don't know what it is) when I click on the little button on the left hand side of the laptop. Usually, it would show green dots/LEDS to tell me how far along it's charged, but now I get nothing.
I get the distinct feeling something's up with my battery, and maybe my RAM (because of the repeated triple beep after shutting down last night).

  • Macbook Pro C2D HD 5400rpm. How many audio tracks?

I'm looking to move from my Ti 1Ghz G4 to a newer Macbook Pro C2D, and i've a question about using the internal HD on the MBP.
On my old TiBook, ive popped in a 100GB 7200rpm drive, and from this i've been able to acheive around 44 to 46 stereo tracks (playback only) before i get "disk too slow errors" (the drive had around 55GB used)
Does anyone know the max number of audio tracks that can be streamed off an internal 160GB 5400rpm in a MBP C2D?
Anyone able to run a quick test for me please?
    Powerbook Ti 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB ram, 100GB 7200rpm HD

whoa he came down hard on you there...
ok i have a macbook, not pro, didn't need the little extra u get more for a lot more money if you buy pro, not worth it to me... i run my sessions on the internal 5400rpm. keep everything in the lappy, samples and all, have her juiced up 2g's of ram and let me tell ya i haven't had any speed issues at all. i have all of logics performance tweaks set to blazing (128, live playback only) and it's comparable to my G5 tower. These Intel chips are no joke. If you have room in your go bag for the external HD take it with you cuz it'll even run sweeter. i'm seriously thinking of getting rid of the old tower and getting another lappy, but no i'll prob just get another macbook, for a grand it ain't bad at all, throw in the apple care, max out the ram and presto you've got all your gonna need from a computer-any application

The processor whine is normal, a ticking sound might be a bad fan or something, but the whine is ok.

Apple has not historically offered a cheap upgrade path for new operating systems unless you bought a new Mac in the time period between them announcing a release date for the new system and the date of that announcement. In the past, times have varied between one and two weeks.
In your case I would not count on it. I would plan on paying the full price, which has not been announced yet either.

  • Expose on MacBook Pro C2D

Replacing my old Powerbook G4 12" 867 MHz with a MacBook Pro C2D makes me happy...
But on my Powerbook, I could activate Expose by using the F9, F10 and F11 keys.
On the MBP C2D, Expose needs to be activated by FN+F9, FN+F10, FN+F11 which makes it less fun to use.
Is there any way to get around this?

This is configured in System Preferences->Keyboard & Mouse preference pane. Go to the first tab called "Keyboard", about half way down is a checkbox labelled: "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features. When this option is selected, press the Fn key to use F1-F12 keys to control hardware features."
So you can toggle back and forth between hardware and software features by using the Fn key and set this preference to whichever you'd like it to do by default.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro C2D Wireless issues after 10.4.10 -  issue pin pointed !

I have a MacBook Pro C2D which has started to do random disconnects from my WLAN.
I am running the latest Tiger 10.4.10
No matter if I use the network connection actively by surfing, chatting, listening to netradio, downloading or if it is just idle, it randomly disconnects. Sometimes after 30 mins, sometimes after several hours.
It never reconnects it selves until I do it manually. But then it has no problem reconnecting.
It is quite annoying, especially since I sometimes run services like a web server (for development reasons) and sometimes want to download large files using either http, ftp or bittorrent. But I cannot trust it to finish the downloads, as it randomly disconnects.
It haven't always done these things. It has started occurring after the last couple of updates from Apple I think (don't remember excatly when).
I have 3 different accesspoints with different wireless chip sets, but it occurs on all of them. Also I have a couple of PC Laptops that dosn't have this problem on my network.
I pinned my issue to one specific setting in my wireless router.
In WPA mode, this setting affects the stability of my link:
    ReAuthentication Timer
It is normally set to 1800 secs (30 mins) - and this makes my MBP disconnect every - yes - 30 mins...almost. Sometimes it tend to survive the interval.
The valid range is 10-9999 seconds in my router.
If set to 10 secs, it almost disconnects all the time - every 10 secs.
If set to 9999 I can work some hours without disconnects (my guess is 9999 secs, or 166 mins).
It seems like some update from Apple in the 10.4.10 release, efficiently broke the WPA encryption implementation of ReAuthentication.
It makes no difference to switch between WPA and WPA2.
Has anyone found a way to fix this from the OS X end, instead of compromising security on the Access Point end?

Whilst I don't personally have the same problem reported here, that's a pretty offensive reply.
You might want to spend a bit of time here
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1135&start=0
and let these people know that they have the best router in the business and that all their computers are working great before advising people to forget about trying to get to the root cause of an issue and spend a load of money instead.
I got a bit frustrated with a post on this forum a little while ago and posted a snotty reply. The original poster called me on it and told me that I didn't have to reply, once I thought about it, I realised the OP was correct and apologised.
Are you big enough to do the same?
    Best of luck.

  • TS1367 after a software update, my macbook pro was supposed to restart, since then, it doesn't restart & there is nothing i can do, any help please ?

    Hello,
after a sofware update, my macbook pro was supposed to restart,
since then the start up process begins & after few seconds, the mac goes back to off without starting, what's wrong ?
    thanks for any support,
    Amine

Let me add a little bit of details,
after the software update, I was asked to restart my laptop,
while doing it, I got a message error :"some files couldn't be updated".
Since then, everytime I start my macbook pro, I have the grey apple & screen, with a kind of updating bar (grey as well) at the bottom,
when the bar reaches approximately 30 to 40%, it disappears & the laptop swiths off.
Ihave tried to start on a safe mode, it doesn't work either,
    thanks

  • Macbook Pro C2D 17" performence vs 15" Performence

    Hey All,
I'm in the midst of selling my current macbook 1.83 and my powermac g5 to go completly mobile with a macbook pro c2d. I work heavely with graphic design and video editing with final cut studio so I am kind of looking for performence. I will be purchasing a 500gb external drive, so hd space is not an issue for editing.
My question is this, has anyone seen a performence difference in the 2.33 15" and 2.33 17", or similar pro models with the CD chips between 15"/17"?
I have read that one, the 17" has more room for cooling which allows the gpu to be clocked at spec than being lowered in the 15".
Two, on both models, the 160 5400 rpm drives are available and I have heard they are using perpindicular writing technology which means that a perpin HD spinning at 5400 is comparable to a 7200rpm HD with longitudinal writing technology. My guess is the 100gb 7200rpm HD upgrade for the 17" is not perpindicular which means it may be a waste of an upgrade, especially since it subtracts $100, not adds to the price when you choose it.
One thing to consider, I dont care about price, since if I go with the 15", i will keep my 20" cinema display to use when editing, where if I go with the 17" i will sell that to pay for the price difference, since 3 inch diff is not really that much to keep such an expensive screen.
    What do you guys think?
    Thanks,
    Tim

I honestly think any performance difference between the two will be negligible. I think the form factor would be more important. The X1600 on the 15" Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros is clocked much higher (Core 418.5, Mem 445.5) than on the original Core Duo models. I think its still slightly underclocked, but much better than the original models.

Reports seem to indicate the 160gb and 200gb drives are indeed PMR. I'm not sure if anyone even manufactures a 2.5" 7200rpm 100gb drive right now. The 160gb drive does seem to be the one to go with.
One thing to consider, I dont care about price, since

This seems like a good reason to go with the 15", IMHO. You'll have a lighter, more portable machine for traveling, but when you're home you'll have that nice 20" display for editing. To me, it sounds like you should order the same model I did - 15" 2.33 GHz with 160gb upgrade.

  • Macbook pro c2d LOUD

I just bought a Macbook pro c2d and I'm ******. I replaced my whisper quiet Imac 2.0 core duo so I can have mobility and a fast mac all in one. At first I felt like I hit pay dirt! The mbp 2.33 15" model is as sleek, cool, and fast as you can want.
Unfortunetaly for me though I'm not just looking to surf the net with a nearly $3,000 machine. I actually want to do work on it.
When running Logic Pro and doing some processor intensive tasks my quiet laptop fans turn into jet engine turbines. So loud that I can't even think of using a microphone anywhere near this laptop. They quiet down rather quickly after whatever is taxing the cpu is done but while they are on they are LOUD.
Does anyone else have this issue that would like to comment?
    Is it being addressed?
    Should I sell this thing?
    Inquiring minds want to know...

    imac duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

download one of the fan control programs. You can set
the fans to behave differently as well as observe
what they are turning at any given point. You might
be able to isolate one of them as being louder.
Mine are the same noise level.
its possible your fans are defective or something. My
fans run usually from 3000 to 5000 revs and never
loud enough I could not talk on skype etc.
call applecare and see what they say
Thanks for the advice. I downloaded smc fancontrol 1.23.
My fans seem to be working just fine though. What I mean by fine is that they seem to be working the way Apple intended them to.
They turn on in the 80's and cool the machine down fast. When the cpu is at idle (46) it's quiet. My fans at this point are 2000 rpm and don't bother me at all.
I don't see how anyone can use a microphone though when they are at 6000 rpm.
I imagine when you're using skype your computer is not being tasked that much so I don't think you'd have this problem. But, when playing back 70 plus audio tracks, recording at the same time, massive amounts of signal processors, firewire drives, firewire audio card, and so on it raises the cpu temp and I get the jet engines.
