MacBook Pro Causes Electric Shocks

About one year I purchased an Apple MacBook Pro. It's very unfortunate that in the past few weeks I am encountering problems that whenever my MacBook Pro (13 inch) is connected to the charger I get electric shocks.
As a resident in Singapore I went to your Apple Service Representative QCD at 6 Tagore Drive #04-03, Singapore with the request to rectify problem. Much to my surprise I was informed that it's "normal" to get "electric shocks" and they even refused to take in the MacBook Pro. I find it very hard to believe that it's normal.
I have always believed that Apple, Inc produces products that are safe & reliable and its for that reason that I have been loyal to Apple product for more than 15 years. I am lead to believe that none of Apple's Computer products is designed to cause "electric shocks". My MacBook Pro is still under warranty though it is about to expire on October 4, 2013, hence I believe that I am still entitled for Apple to check my MacBook Pro and for Apple provide the assurance that it does not cause for "electric shock" that often times is very significant.
I trust that the appropriate department within Apple, Inc. to advise me whether it is indeed normal & common practice to cause for ELECTRIC SHOCKS whenever it is connected to the charger. Your urgent reply would be very much appreciated.

Are you using the 3 prong adapter? (Grounded/Earth)
If you are using a 2 prong adapter try the 3 prnog so the MBP does not try find ground thru you.
If no joy, take to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, it not normal to get shocked, and I would not use it until the problem has been resolved. Take advantage of your warranty

  • Macbook Pro 2009 Electric static Shock, then freezes

My Macbook Pro has been acting up. It's dry in the winter, and I expect static shocks from things, but having it freeze afterward *****.
If I touch any part of the MacBook Pro (even the screen), and get a shock, then the mouse will freeze, and the computer will lock up. It's still actually running, because I can hear my music, or audio from the movie.
If I press the reboot button, I get the [restart] [shutdown] [cancel] menu, but can not do anything with it.
All I can do is Press and Hold the reboot button, and start over.
I never know when I'm going to get a shock, and now I'm afraid to touch my mac if I step away (even for a few seconds).
I have to keep one hand in contact with the mac at all times to avoid this issue.
    Please help.

I've been experiencing the EXACT same issue for a few weeks now, multiple times a DAY. One theory my partner had was that I was perhaps too electrically charged (given the dry weather, my wearing fleece all the time, and all the carpet in the apt), but that the charge could be released by touching a piece of metal. I happened to have a stainless steal ruler on my desk so I've been resting my hand(s) on it intermittently and it's been working wonders so far. No more static for over a day now (this may sound insignificant, but after having to force shut down and restart the MBP multiple times a day, it's such a relief).
Of course, I do not want to be carrying around the ruler where ever I go w/ the MBP and this shouldn't be happening anyway, so I called Apple Care (still have my coverage). I told the "genius" about my "solution" to the static issue. He stated that while it was great that I got the static to stop (for now) this should not be happening. He suggested I take out the battery, unplug the power cord, and then hit the power button for about 5 seconds. Then place the battery back in its place, plug back the power cord, and use the laptop again and see if the problem persists. If it does, go see an Apple "genius" in person.
So I've followed the "genius'" instructions.
My next step: Stop resting my hands on the ruler and test if the static returns. If so, I will bring my MBP to a "genius" at an Apple store. I'll keep you posted.
    Good luck.

  • My late 2007 black macbook gives me electric shocks! Help, can I get compensation for this?

As my question says, my macbook keeps giving me electric shocks. It hasn't done that before and started just about a week ago. My friends dad that had a faulty Macbook Pro got a new one as it would give a few shocks a day... but as the MacBook isn't known for this I'm not sure what to do and how to prove that it does this? Also my fan is really loud, I've been told to get it "hoovered", is this correct?

    Hello ndilucci,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with slowed performance. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice for the issue you are experiencing. This article is meant for Lion, but the same information applies to Snow Leopard as well.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
If you find your Mac is running slowly, check any open applications to make sure they’re compatible with your computer. Or you may need to increase your hard disk space or repair your hard disk.
An application you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
There might not be enough free disk space on your computer’s startup disk. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any applications you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk

  • Latest update for MacBook Pro causing spin issues  :(  Any suggestions?

The Latest Update for MacBook Pro is causing my computer to hang....I hate updating for this reason...seems it always happens...Any suggestions?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Synchronizing iMac & MacBook Pro causes faulty cursor

After cloning my iMac and MacBook Pro back and forth a few times using SuperDuper in order to keep them synchronized, the cursors on both machines were intermittently non-functional upon startup.Of course one has a trackpad and one doesn't. I reinstalled OS10.6.1 from the Snow Leopard Disc purchased at the Apple store onto the iMac and reinstalled OS10.6.1 from the disc that came with the laptop onto the laptop, but the problem has persisted on both machines. Usually if I wait ten minutes the cursor will start working on its own, but sometimes it doesn't function until I restart the computer several times and wait each time to see if the cursor comes back on its own. Apple tech support suggested getting rid of all third party software, reinstall the OS and then add third party apps to see if one of them is causing the problem. What a headache! Any suggestions as how to fix the problem or suggestions as the best way to sycnh the 2 machines?

the first suggestion would be to NEVER use superduper to clone drives back and forth between different model computers. this will inevitably lead to problems due to differences in hardware. I'm very surprised you can even boot the computers after that.
if reinstalling the OS did not work make a new user account and log into it. do you have the same problems there?

  • Can resetting the SMC on MacBook Pro cause damage to the laptop?

I've reset the SMC on my new MacBook Pro, and are curious as to whether or not doing so is capable of causing damage to the computer and its hardware.

Apple would not publish instructions to do so (or without a warning anyway) if an SMC reset could cause damage.

  • MacBook Pro Causing Account Lock-Out in Active Directory

    Dear fellow forumers,
I'm having a MacBook Pro, running on Leopard. I'm running WinXP Pro on VM Fusion.I'm connecting my MacBook to a Local LAN enviroment in my company, but it is not bind to any AD.
But concurrently when i run WindowsXP Pro on VM Fusion, i actually join domain in the XP Pro.
If anyone can advise, what may be causing the frequent account lock-out whenever i run WindowXP on VM Fusion?

I'm having the same issue under Parallels. I connect to my corporate network using Cisco VPN. I have Entourage configured and Outlook configured in my VM. Cisco VPN is configured for both the Mac OS and for Windows XP within Parallels. I never run both simultaneously. If I connect to VPN within MacOS X, I can have both Entourage and Outlook open and the same time. I seem to notice more frequent lockouts when I do this. I have also tried running Entourage via OWS. This removes the need to use VPN on the Mac. However, I still get lockouts...just not as frequently. Any help greatly appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro causing interference with EyeTV while charging

    Hi,
I bought an EyeTV DTT a while back and it just will not display anything while my MBP is on AC power, the signal quality drops from around 80% to zero. I also noticed by accident, that if there is current running through the magsafe (I accidentally let it touch something metal), the same interference is caused even if it is not connected to the MacBook Pro. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks but I've tried both USB ports and tried moving the device away with a USB hub and a USB extension, both didn't work.

  • 2008 MacBook Pro case is shocking!

Once in a while while sitting at my desk, I would get an electric shock when touching the metal frame of the desk where there is a screwhole and some unpainted metal is showing.  I figured there must have been a frayed wire rubbing on the desk frame or something, but i inspected it and found no such wire.
So always needing to find the problem, i started to try to recreate the issue, and i did so by putting one hand on my mac (next to the touchpad, not on the touchpad) and one finger on this hole, and ZZZZAP!  Ouch.
Is there electricity being conducted through my mac's case?  I seem to be completing a circuit by touching the two items at the same time, but i'm fairly sure that there should not be any electriicty being conducted through the case.
Any thoughts or info before I take it in to the Geniuses?
    THanks

that's because you are.  The body is an excellent conductor of electricity.  Make sure to ground yourself out.

  • Macbook Pro causing lag on home network

    Hello,
I got 2 PCs and a Macbook Pro connected to my Home Network. Whenever the Macbook Pro is connected to it the networks starts to have constant lag spikes.
If only the 2 PCs are connected everything runs smooth. I tried using an Ethernet cable instead of wireless but the problem remains so i guess that the problem is actually something on my Macbook.
Any ideas what can it be? And how to solve it?
Thank you so much for you attention.

Usually, that's because both MBP's are trying to use the same IP address.
However, we need more information, like the type of router you're using.

  • Logic out of Macbook Pro causing "clipping" sound???

    Hello,
I'm very new with using my Macbook Pro to create live music. Currently I'm using an M-Audio MIDI keyboard and want to be able to have our keyboard player use this MIDI keyboard for "pads" while using another piano as "grand piano".
    Here's the problem:
I'm using an 1/8 in adpater from my computer---> quarter inch cable---> DI box---> Main System. I'm thinking my issues may lie somewhere in that transition. Out on the house board it's showing hardly no signal strength but yet it has the sound of "clipping" the tweeters. Something is clipping somewhere or going on with the signal that I can't explain. Would it be better for me to get a FireWire/USB2 interface such as an M-Audio and then run the interface out to the main system?
    Thanks for your help!!!

Is the macbookpro new? Running OS X 10.6.5?
What version of Logic 7 Express are you running? For Logic Pro 7 you needed 7.1 at least to run on Intel based Macs. Run Software Update.
btw, Logic 7 isn't officially supported on OS 10.6.x. I would recommend upgrading to Logic Express 9.
Also in Logic 7 check that you have core audio enabled. Go to Logic Express > Preferences
Choose Audio and Core Audio MUST be enabled.

  • Using Echo Audiofire on aluminum MacBook Pro causes total freeze

    Hey everyone,
So I have an Echo Audiofire 8 digital audio interface. Picked up the new alumimum MBP because I wanted more power to facilitate more plugins and tracks than my first-gen MacBook could provide during audio production.
I just got a firewire 800 to 400 cable from monoprice in the mail, so I was totally happy to fire up the new computer with my audio software. However, I can't get either OS (using XP on Bootcamp, too) to work with the Audiofire. In OS X, I switch to the Audiofire in the sound menu but no sound occurs in any program. Although, the system continues to work and when I switch back to the built-in sound everything plays fine.
In Windows, playing any file in iTunes, VLC, or Windows Media Player makes the system completely unresponsive (mouse freezes, everything freezes) and requires a hard reset. I of course shut down the Audiofire too, then turn it back on and then turn on the MBP. Selecting the Audiofire as a sound source in either the XP control panel or the Nuendo audio settings causes a total system freeze too.
I've got all the latest drivers and updates across the board so I'm totally scratching my head here. Is it a device setting I'm overlooking somewhere? Or could it be a bad cable? Has anyone else seen this happen too?
    Thanks

An update and an apology. I must have been so frustrated last night that I didn't properly power down and back up the equipment in the right order when I tested it for OS X. The Audiofire DOES work with the new MBP in OS X. I booted up three times this morning and everything's fine, it records to Garageband and plays back wonderfully as always. So now I strongly suspect it's something to do with the Windows updates I've applied.
I get to have the fun of reinstalling Windows again. Good times.

  • How do i disable audio out timeout on a macbook pro causing noise on external amplifier, without having a silent .wav playing in infinite loop?

After updating to Mavericks I have this problem. From what I guess, my audio out (either the signal, or the entire soundcard) cuts power after being idle for about 30 seconds. This results in a static noise when connected to my external amplifier. From various forums, dating back to 2007/8 I can see this is not a new problem. The only workaround is playing an empty .wav sound on infinite loop (either by using a terminal command, or by a third-pary app which does this for you), preventing the audio out from timing out and cutting power. This seems to me to be an undisirable proceeding. Even if minimal, it uses extra power and memory. Is there any way to prevent the sound card from timing out like this?

Ok. I tried disconnecting the charger from my macbook and that actually helped. The noise is now so low it is hardly audible, so I guess it has to do with a ground loop. But still, even when hardly audible it still only happens after 30 seconds of idle time. Is that because my theory about a timeout is correct, or is there some other reason for this? This used to just happen when my macbook went on standby (sleep), but now it happens allready after 30 seconds, so even though it may be a loop, it wasn't like this before. I'd love to understand what is different now.
