Macbook Pro charger burned- help? (Pics)

My Macbook Pro charger has been acting weird the past few days: not charging, getting really hot, etc. I went to charge my computer today only to find that the coating over the wires was burned and melted!
I charged my computer last night while watching a movie and unplugged it before going to sleep. I did not use the charger today at all so it must have happened last night?
I do not leave it plugged in without my computer attached.
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 13".
Has this happened to anyone else before? If so, did Apple replace it? Could this have started a fire??
Thanks, feel free to ask any questions if you need more info

I guess - welcome to the club Just had mine burned - with smoke and smell. Good - I was working at home and I have an Apple Store nearby. Bad - $89+tx for the charger. Whatever was the actual reason - this must not happen. This thing can burn the house. Needless to mention that this specific charger - I was keeping it always at home and never wrapped the wire around it. Never in my life anything like this happened to any power adapter.

  • Macbook pro charger- burning out.  surveyish?

i have already swapped my macbook pro charger out twice, as after 2 months they tend to stop working, and the problem is the little place where the wire meets the magnetic connector. i know that bending it ruins its durability and life, so i tried to not do that. i thought i did it pretty successfully, until my first charger burnt out after it got extremely hot. it would stop charging for periods at a time, and there were places in the wire, specifically where it met the power brick and connector, where you could see right to the copper/ whatever the **** material it is because it got so hot that it melted the plastic. the apple store has replaced it twice, and i am about to go in for the 3RD charger. does anyone have a recommendation on something that would hold the wire still inbetween the connector and full wire? and who else has had this problem? there isnt a problem with the mbp, its just the connectors suck as5 and blow out.

    Ditto over here.
My connector-cable junction has always been slightly twisted. It's a more complex curve than just a twist, but wasn't perfect from the factory for sure.
The plastic jacket has now just torn this week and there's braided shielding and lots of unsavory bits showing.
Oh, and it started to singe a cushion it was touching. It was starting to burn.
Very antithetical to the "It just works" vibe.
"It just burns" is more like it. =:o
Seems like this particular Achilles heel didn't get much field testing before it was unleashed.
Wasn't the Mag-Safe connector supposed to put an end to the whole problem of a $3,000 laptop being felled by a $1.79 connector/jacket on the AC adapter?
I'm on batteries four and five as of this writing, so the topic of power management and the MBP is getting to be a rather sore subject.
Will try to swap it out at work or might have to belly up to the Genius Bar.

  • Macbook Pro Charger PLEASE HELP!

hey, I have a 13 inch macbook pro (late 2011). I have a few questions since it is going to be my first time buying a genuine macbook charger:
which charger should I get (theres a 45,60 and 85W, I don't want to risk getting the wrong one)?
How do I avoid it from over heating (the ones I've bought from ebay tend to do this a lot, it can't be trusted)?
and also, do the chargers in retail include an extension (the ones I've gotten from ebay don't include one)?

You may contact Apple Store or look into the online one to see if you can locate
one in the web store. Another source that sometimes is a slightly better price
when they have the correct one(s) in stock is OWC macsales... With a MB/Pro
you should not use the 45w, as that is for the MB/Air & will not work. Depending
on the size of display, if the unit has a DVD optical drive, and other hardware that
may require a large capacity output charger (to run the MB while charging it, too)
then consider the higher output based on the model specifications.
Note there are MagSafe and MagSafe2 adapter versions, so be sure to get the
    correct version for your computer, or if needed, get the small convertor plug;

You can use a higher output adapter than the original when the magsafe type jack
is the same, as the adapter will not generally over-power the computer battery...

The good thing with a source such as macsales OWC is you can contact them to
be sure the item is correct; you can also check specs to see which adapter is the
correct one if attempting to match the original specs. But some sources may only
have the 85w version. (They also offer a 45w model suited only for the MB /Air.)
The Apple Store has a battery that may be OK, if in stock. Ask local store or
call main Apple 800# and have your product serial number handy. I tried to
get confirmation of Apple part availability -- but the Apple Store (US) times-out.
In any event, hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

yes, as long as they deem it as a manfacturing flaw.  in order to get a new charger, you need to bring both the changer and the mac to apple so they can process the warranty claim.

do not use that charger AT ALL.  It could cause a fire.  Bring it to your local Apple store or AASP.  They may give you a free replacement, but you need to bring both the charger and the mac.

  • My brand new MacBook pro charged last night but now won't turn on, help!

My MacBook pro charged fully last night but now won't turn on, the green battery light is flashing but no matter how long I hold the power button it won't start. I just bought the MacBook in January.

Well then it isn't really Brand New. Brand New kinda means you bought it yesteerday or 2-3 days ago.
In any event youy need to take it to Apple and have them fix or replace it.
You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix.

  • MacBook Pro Charger - Intermittantly Stops Working

    Hi All,
I have had my macbook pro now for just over a year and unlucky for me im 20 days out of my 1 year warrenty and now not entitle to upgrade to apple care because of this when i phoned techincal support
The macbook pro charger is working intermittantly so it isnt completely dead.
if i wiggle it around or sit the cables just right it will work but it isnt working 1005 off the time like it used to.
I have a 2010 macbook pro with the L shape charger. I have manager to get another old style T shape charger off my friend which works perfectly with my macbook pro but will this harm my battery life because im using an "older" charger? but its brand new. also do you think its worth going into my local apple store in milton keynes to see if they can help me at all? as my gripe is you pay £1000 for a laptop and one year on the charger brakes. And i do look after my equipment. Its not like i throw it about or mistreat it.
I think it could of happened early if i used it more.
    Is this a common fault?
    Thanks
    Daniel

If you have bought AppleCare Extended Warranty, MBP is in warranty for 3years
    from the date of purchase.
Best thing to do, is to take the MBP to the Apple store for evaluation and possible repair / replacement.

  • Macbook pro charger wont work AT ALL!

Words cannot even explain how furious I am. My 9 month old MacBook Pro charger does not work, all of a sudden!
There is no damage to the charger at all and my laptop is in great condition. I need a solution and fast because this laptop has my whole life on it which leaves me irritated seeming i need it for my studies!! I don't know what to do, its 4am in the morning in australia and my laptop is completely dead! HELP!!!!!

Take your computer and power adapter to the Apple Store when it opens in the morning and they will take care of it.
This problem is often caused by winding the DC (computer-end) of the cord directly around the "ears" on the body of the power adapter. The "approved method" is to make a one to two inch (25-50mm) loop in the air, THEN begin winding the cord.
I bought my wife an aftermarket car-charger for her MacBook. In addition to being able to use the computer for a while in the car, now we have a backup. If the regular charger dies, we can recharge the 'Book off the car.

  • HT204406 iTunes Match saying I'm limited to 5 devices...but I don't have 5 devices and won't work on my MacBook Pro. Please Help!

I've just got a new MacBook Pro, and want to have iTunes Match on it. But when I go to 'add this computer' in iTunes on the MacBook, a message comes up saying I've reached my limit of Match being on 5 devices. This makes no sense because I only have match on my iPad and my old Windows laptop and nothing else.
Out of curiosity, I turned off iTunes Match on my iPad to see what would happen, but I still cannot get Match on my MacBook Pro.
    Please help!

    Do a backup before proceeding.
Try putting the 10.6.3 disk in the computer. During a restart, hold down the option/alt key, select the disk, and see if you can boot from there. If so, select the language, then go to the Utilities menu, and select Disk Utility. Check to see what partition scheme you have by selecting the hard drive.
If you don't have GUID, you are going to need to erase the drive and reformat, which will cause you to lose all your data. Did I mention doing a backup?
If you do have GUID, run Disk Utility repair disk and repair permissions. You may have to do this more than once. Then try in install 10.6.3.
If successful, use the combo update to get to 10.6.8 and then run Software update until there are no more updates.
