Macbook pro chimes but black screen

I have a MacBook Pro with 15 in Retina Display. When I go to turn on my Mac, it chimes, like usually, but the screen apparently stays black (lighting up a little). The apple logo in the back is lit as well, as if the computer is on. I have tried PRAM, attempting to get it out of sleep mode, and PMU, but none of these have worked thus far. How do I get the screen to stop being black and work like usual? My Mac was working normally about half an hour before, and then I took a break and shut it off. The battery was at 95% when turned on; I have also tried charging the computer. I updated the computer over three months ago, and I didn't do anything unusI'm legally blind and in college, so I depend upon my Mac to do all my schoolwork! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My Macbook Pro has a black screen when running in Bootcamp Windows 7. Since I updated the mac side my windows side now starts up with completely black screen - no prompt, nothing, Cap keys still light up as does mouse and DVD drive seems to run.
Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.
I suspect the Mac update wiped out my PC video drivers but can not think of a way to re-install?
Can see the PC volume from Mac side with files.
I've looked at all the online solutions so far and have tried most of them without success. Please help!

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up.

Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up. I've tried inserting the Mac OS X install disc to run the hardware test(Restart and hold down D), But it still does nothing. Just the black screen. Now I can't get the disc out. I've tried holding down the track pad key upon start up but that doesn't work neither.
What do I do??? Please help.

Remove the battery to find your serial number in the battery bay. Then you can look your MBP up on EveryMac.com:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
That will give you all the information on your Mac.
This is assuming that you have the MBP with the removable battery and not the unibody. The unibody has different graphic chips.
    Good luck!

  • My MacBook Pro turns to black screen randomly

I bought a new MacBook Pro in April 2013 after my old one died after 7 years.  I was super excited.  I bought the 15 inch retina display (early 2013) with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 and 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3.  I am having many issues with my laptop.  I was hoping one of you could help me.
First issue - battery life.  I originally had my computer set to never sleep.  So I would leave it and it would eventually die.  I thought the battery life is horrible.  I would have to charge my laptop twice or more a day.  So I fixed that but my battery life still seems super inefficient.  I am just searching the internet and using iphoto.  I am having to charge it now once a day.  Is this battery life normal?  I brought it into the Apple store and they did some diagnostics test on the battery and found it was working as it should.  It stayed charged for the expected 8 hours.  I'm not sure how because I never get 8 hours EVER.
Second issue - my computer will randomly turn to a black screen.  While I am typing or searching the internet or just using it for whatever.  It turns to a black screen and then I have to hit a button or hit the track pad to get it to turn back on.  When it comes back on, I don't have to type in my password.  It works just as expected.  I cannot duplicate this issue.  I do not have a magnetic bracelet or have my phone or any magnets near my computer.  It had happened 4 times before I brought it into the Apple store.  This is what they checked it in for: Check in for one loop of asd with hdd scan. If unit passes asd attempt to duplicate issue in customer os. Customer has video on desktop named "flickering" to show issue.  So of course because they could not reproduce anything, they returned it to me stating that the hardware was running as it was supposed too.  Never been more frustrated in my life.
Third Issue - When I start up from sleep sometimes the screen flickers before it starts up.  I want to know if this is normal?
Fourth Issue - This is the newest issue that just started today.  When I hit the power button and put the computer to sleep, it takes about 30 seconds for the computer to go to sleep.  This is new to me because it used to happen almost automactically.  So I can press the power button, press sleep the proceed to do things on the computer and then it shuts off.
So I have an appointment for the Genius Bar on Friday.  I thought I might see what all of you have to say.  I am frustrated to say the least.  I paid A LOT of money for this machine and I love Apple products.  I want to be happy with my purchase but I am regreatting it.  What else can I do?  I'm not sure what to say to the techs at the genius bar for them to take me seriously.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Missy,
    Battery Life:
Please connect you notebook to power when it is available.  Your battery has a limited number of charge cycles.  When you must run on the battery, otherwise leave the notebook plugged into a power outlet.  I have a notebook I purchased on 2011 that has 70 charge cycles on it.
You can determine how many charge systes are on your battery by selcting the menu item " >About This Mac..." then click the button "More Info..."  Now click "System Report"  Once System Profiler is running click the text "Power" on the left and locate "Cycle Count"
The higher that number the lower I would expect your battery life to be.

  • Can anyone help read my crash report? My 2010 macbook pro keeps going black screen with looped sound

I've had this laptop since 2010 and it's been pretty good up until about two months ago when it would just randomly crash. The screen would go black and if there was sound going on, the sound would just loop on that single second like a broken record. The only way to get it out of that is to hold the power button and then turn it back on. When these crashes would happen in the beginning it would only be when I had Adobe Photoshop running, now it just happens whenever I'm simply using the internet browsing through Tumblr, Youtube, and Facebook.
Every time I turn my computer back on I get a crash report like this:

First, uninstall the third-party software that installed these extensions:
    com.vara.driver.VaraAudio          1.0.3
    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower          1.6.2
    com.pctools.iantivirus.kfs          1.0.1
Remove the Dell mouse and use the original mouse.
See if the above help. If they don't:
The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.

  • MacBook Pro Thunderbolt with black screen

    Hi,
my MacBook Pro 15" 2GHz, Core i7 with Thunderbolt, OS 10.6.7 has some problems:
Sometimes I have to let run it during the night. When I wee it the next morning, it won't sleep, it is still on, but the screen stays black. Can't put it to sleep mode with closing the lid nor put on the screen by moving the trackpad or any keys. Only solution for me in the moment is to press the on/off button for 5 seconds.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro  17 in BLACK SCREEN?

Hello... I turned on my MacBook Pro 2012 model... I hear log on sounds keyboard lights up... But, screen is black!
This is my 1st post - not sure if I am in the right section! Any input or advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
    * Upgraded to Mavericks a few weeks ago. I thought everything was ok?

I'm confused by the "17 in" and the "2012 model" as there was no 17" MacBook Pro released in 2012. Perhaps you lave a late 2011 17" model?
Anyway... you've either a screen or a GPU problem. The best thing to do would be to take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them give you a free diagnosis and estimate for repair (if you don't have AppleCare).
Call back at least to confirm your screen size and model year.

  • Macbook Pro boot shows black screen with white text cursor

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro 7,1 MC374xx/A running Mavericks.  My box has two internal hard drives in it.  One had the Mac OS installed to it, and the other has absolutely nothing on it.  I decided to give Boot Camp Assistant a try and chose the hard drive with nothing on it to install Windows on.  I also had an external USB DVD drive attached with the Windows 7 installation disc on it.
So, next thing ya know, my Mac reboots and loads a black screen that says "Memory Overload." I take out the external USB drive and restart.  Then it said, "No boot devices found."  Now for whatever reason, it's just a black screen with a white text cursor.
    What the heck happened?
I selected command R and confirmed that I installed Boot Camp on the right hard drive (the drive that did not contain my Mac OS).  Then, I completely erased everything from the drive with Boot Camp on it.  But still..black screen with white text cursor.
I have no Time Machine backups available so I'm forced to reinstall the OS.  Any idea why this happened?  It seems I must have attempted to install Boot Camp improperly.  Any ideas or instructions on what to do now or how to install Boot Camp successfully on the Macbook Pro I own?
    Earnestly,
    Speck

Boot Camp- Windows installation boots to black screen with blinking cursor.

  • MacBook Pro (late 2011) black screen, resolution issue.

Hi. Please excuse my spelling and grammar as I'm asking this on my phone.
I have a pretty big issue regarding my Late 2011 MacBook Pro (15inch). Every time I start it up, it shows the apple logo with the pinwheel fine, but after that it just goes black, but the computer is still on and functioning, but no matter what I press it remains black. However, if I plug it into an external monitor (via my thunderbolt to HDMI) the screen turns blue for a second and then comes on, and it works. If I pull it out the screen goes blue and then goes black. Also, if I open photobooth, the screen works on its own without the external monitor, and if I close it, it stops working again. I've found out by taking a screenshot when the screen is black that the resolution is 2048x1536 (when it's black), but when it'a plugged into an external monitor, the resolution is as it should be.
I have tried many things, such as restoring, using disk utility, replacing the harddrive with a spare, resetting the PRAM. I haven't come across anyone who has had a similar issue yet. Could you help me out?

  • Mid-2010 15in. MacBook Pro going to black screen requiring reset by holding power button

    Hello all,
I have been searching for a problem solution for quite some time now. I have a mid-2010 15" Macbook Pro (2.4GHz Intel I5; 4 GB mem) updated to version 10.7.5. The computer randomly goes to a black screen, while the program / movie / whatever is still running (I can hear the sound) and then stalls. I then have to hold the power button down until it will reset. I will post the error message at the end of this.
I have wiped the computer clean and reinstalled everything and that did not help. I am no longer under Apple warrenty and hoping that someone has experienced. Short of me finding an answer I will take it in to Apple. Thanks in advance for any help!

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • WORKED FOR ME : MacBook Pro mid 2010 black screen problem

    Hello
    Good news 'til now :
Like for some mid-2010 macbook pro owners, I started to have a recurrent (daily) problem : when I was using the trackpad to do something in Opera, Safari or QuickPick (Launchpad clone), I had very often seen suddenly my laptop seem to turn off but not really (the screen turned off, no key to bring it back, power button disabled, it was like sleep mode but without typical sleep mode light and with nothing to do to wake it up, even the caps lock key didn't worked anymore). Each time I was forced to turn off by maintaining the power button.
The problem could occur three times a day or more.
    I'm on 10.6.8.
I installed the Video Update 1.0 for mid-2010 macbook pros you can find on the Apple site. It seemed to solve the issue for one day, maybe two but it used to reappear the same way as before. Repairing permissions with Disk Utility changed nothing to that. I disabled hardware acceleration in Opera Preferences, zoom feature in QuickPick, disabled graphics cards switch in OS X Power Saving Preferences. Useless.
Then I remembered I used a software when I encountered other problems with my 2006 macbook pro. It's called Kext Utility (very easy to find on the web). It specifically repairs the kernel files structure and updates the kernel files cache. The problem I describe is actually related to a kernel panic. So I re abled the graphics cards switch and by caution I overwrote the Video Update 1.0 by reinstalling it, the laptop rebooted to finish it, and right after that I launched Kext Utility (it takes about one minute to repair and update). Since that the problem totally disappeared. I don't risk to re abled either hardware acceleration in Opera or zoom feature in QuickPick but I probably will now I know how to get rid of this very inconvenient problem.
Hope it will work for you guys

For those who use QuickPick, I've just reenabled the zoom feature (Preferences > Show/Hide Option) and the problem is back very quickly. It's gone as I disable the zoom again. So I advise you to keep this option disabled if you've got the same problem as me.
I haven't reenabled hardware acceleration in Opera, no problem with Opera up to now.

  • New Macbook Pro...black screen?

I literally just started using my Macbook Pro an hour ago. It wanted to install updates to iMovie, etc., so I plugged it into the wall and closed the cover. When I went back, the screen was blank. It won't get off of the blank screen -- holding the power button makes the hard drive rev up, but that doesn't lead to the computer turning on as it usually does. Suggestions?

    Hi b,
S.U. is right on all points; I would still try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • New Macbook Pro (with Retina) black screen after waking up

    Hello,
I bought a new 2015 Macbook pro (13" with Retina) a couple of weeks ago and noticed one thing that concerns me.
When the Macbook either boots up or wakes up from sleep mode it stays on a completely black screen for about 30-45 seconds.
I find myself sweating it out to see if the screen will actually come on. So far the screen always (eventually) comes on and the Macbook works as expected.
Do you think this is a problem with the Macbook? If so, I'd like to return it for anew before the month is up.
If this is a software issue, how can I fix it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Set the default startup disk.
    2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Reset the PRAM.
    5. Reset the printing system.

  • Retina macbook pro boots to black screen

I have a Retina MPB with SSD, etc. Recently after restarting my MPB, a FileVault dialog was presented - I clicked the "cancel" button. After this, my MBP has refused to boot past the initial Apple/grey screen, and instead, stays on a pitch black screen that displays only an active pointer cursor. Trackpad is responsive, as are all keyboard keys (they make the bonk sound after pressing many repeatedly).
Sadly, nothing else -- I was able to reboot using "command+P+R" to the MacOSX Utilities screen, and no issues were found with my startup disk, but restarting once again resulted in the black screen that was displayed within seconds affter the Apple/gray screen went away.
Anyone see this ever? And if so -- how do you resolve it???
    ~Douglas

OK - next bit of discovery: I rebooted in SAFE mode (hold Shift while boot - which apparently turns off the graphics support) and it successfully booted...but returns to black screen on boot even after downloading and installing the new Retina Thunderbolt 1.2 software update that was recently posted.
This had me recall one other recent "change" I made in attempts to have Aperture work a bit better/faster on what seems a very slugglish system...
Really want this resolved asap --
