Macbook Pro - Coffee Spill

My Machine:
Macbook Pro, 13in, Retina Display, 2014
Yesterday I decided to go on a little coffee date with my computer, and when I say coffee date I really mean I dumped an entire cup of coffee onto my keyboard.
I probably made a lot of dumb decision in trying to dry it out (blow dryer, shaking, etc...) but unfortunately reflexes kicked in rather than mental judgement. I live in an area with no Apple store so I took the computer to an Apple Certified repair store. They took the computer from me and left it to dry overnight. I got a call from them earlier this afternoon and he explained that fixing it through their store would easily equal the cost of a brand new Macbook (but at least it is repairable). He suggested taking it to the Apple store and getting it fixed under one of their "flat rate" repairs. From what I can tell, this will also cost me the amount of the computer (estimate of $1200). What are other peoples experiences with taking your machine to the Apple store after a spill? I've read mixed reviews of some people getting charged an arm and a leg, and others getting off "easier" with a charge of $700-800.
I've also looked into other repair websites. ispillrepair.com seems to cut a good deal but I've read some mixed reviews about the place. Any feedback on other options for repair?
Any (sound) advice would be immensely helpful. I'm a first year masters student and living without a computer really isn't an option nor is paying A LOT of money to get a repair done. Just trying to weigh my options....
Sincerely,
A smart (but dumb) graduate student

I think that they were talking about a generality, where if not treated, could fail at any given time.

Ok, so the motherboard is fried because of  a coffee spill...soak ...   ... bath. Apple is saying 1250$ to replace the motherboard. Does anyone know of a possible website or maybe a repair shop (Los Angeles) that will repair your motherboard at a resonable price?

  • MacBook Pro coffee spilt.

    Hello,
i own a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, just over a year ago half a cup of coffee was spilt into the keyboard, immediately I whipped the bottom cover off, removed the battery and stripped the machine down to ensure it was all dried out and there was no residue left on the logic board. Left if to dry for around a week and saw no obvious sign of any damage.
turned it on a boom, powered on with no problem. About a month ago so almost 11 months down the line it was charging whilst I was searching on safari, and it completely shut off.
id been having problems with the charging as it'd only work on certain positions and i kept having to take the L plug in and out to get it to register it was connected.
I've again had it open and still so no sign of corrosion or any obvious damage.
I've tried my friends 60W magsafe and the lights on the L connector flash very dimly green & orange.
now I'm debating replacing things such as my battery to see if this solves any issues. As I've tried all the resets I can possibly do with no avail.
(ps, I've had it taken into Apple and the cost of them doing it compared to replacing it with a new machine far outways,
so I'd rather see if anyone else has had the same issue and managed to resolve it before replacing the MacBook)
thanks for reading and I look forward to any responses.

Unfortunately, yes. What Apple would do is replace the motherboard. That's in the $600 - $700 range. How old is it? I'm not sure if this service would work for you, you'd have to contact the guy and ask.

  • How do I clean my macbook pro after spilling coffee on it and it doesnt work well now

Anyone spilt coffee over their macbook ?Mine won't work properly now.....on go slow and keys not working?Help?

Turn off your computer.  Using it after liquid damage can further damage its components.
Get your computer into a bin of rice.  Rice is great at absorbing moisture.
Contact your closest Apple Authorized Service Provider to see if they can help repair accidental damage.  Apple Retail Stores generally don't repair accidental damage.

  • Macbook had coffee spilled on it

    Hi there,
I purchased a Macbook from a friend and 2 days after receiving it my mother spilled coffee on it.  It wouldn't power on after days of leaving it; took it to a repair center and they said it was probably 'pooched' and not to spend the money/time on replacing it.  It has been sitting in the laptop bag for months (approx. 9) and just for kicks I took it out, put the battery back in and surprise, surprise it started.  The Apple logo came up on the screen, and the light on the front is 'flashing' as though it is charging the battery but nothing is showing on the screen.
Is it possible it still has life left in it since the logo appeared on the screen and it seems to be charging the battery?

It may have power but since it's not loading the operating system, there may be permanent damage to the logic board.

  • Macbook Pro got spilled on water.

Here what happened,i went to a friends house to party for new year,i use my mac on the table then all the sudden this baby just took a water bottle and fell which cause my mac to be spilled a bit.So it automaticly turn off and i got worried so i tried to dry it off by(maybe wrong move) putting near a heat source not higher than 50 celcius. I also tried tilted it so i can use gravity so water can escape my mac. Now later on to the following day,i open my mac,it did work.So i tried also my window partition that works also. But now theres a problem(no keyboard problem),its the light setting of my mac. What i meant by that is the lights go randomly low and high at a random pace(think of you use low then it goes high and low).I was curious to what did the water touch last night so i went to open my mac(unscrew the lid then look at the inside),there it was ,it touched the motherboard. So now i wonder should i countinue drying the mac, by a new motherboard(im not sure if anyone sells these) or do i have to by another mac.
Problem:random light settting(low and high light setting everytime)
Question:Do i have to countinue do attempt to dry,by another mac or another solution(note that the mac is dry)
Thanks for reading and responding this question.

MBPs like oil do not mix with water.  If you are very, very lucky, you may survive this incident, but the odds are against you.
I would suggest that you keep the cover off of the machine, place it in a warm envoronment and direct a fan on it to get all of the moisture out of it.  I do not recommend utilizing an outside heat source.  If not controlled correctly you may inflict additional damage.
If it works, you have dodged the proverbial bullet.  If not, its the repair shop.  Do not be surprised if the repair costs are in the price range of a new MBP.
A last gasp measure is to spray nonresidue electronic cleaner on the internals of the MBP and dry it out.  No guarantees as to results.
    Good luck.
    Ciao.

  • How do I get the coffee stain out of my MacBook Pro screen? Spilled coffee on it e

I spilled coffee on my MacBook Pro this morning .... used the cool setting on my blow dryer for 20 mintues to dry out the keypad ....
Switched it back on in 4 hours .... everything works , except I now have a coffee stain behind my screen .... is there a way to absorb that out
or do I have to buy a new lid for my computer ?

You might have to have a new screen installed.  It's not too expensive ($160) and it's DIY, if you have the right tools and skills.

Macbook pro had coffee spilled on it two weeks ago; all working fine now except for the monitor, display is dim and photos not appearing properly. Any suggestions? Apple said would cost too much to repair, anyone had any luck with outside repair facilities? thanks.

I would check with HP. Your scanner may need a firmware update and updated HP software. Start here:

  • I spilled coffee on my new macbook pro....What should I do?

macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

If you spilled coffee INTO the Mac (into the keyboard), then:
    1. Shut it down(do not put it to sleep)!
    2. Unplugg AC adapter.
    3. Leave it that way at least 24hours before turning it on again.
    4. If the computer seems dry after the first 24 hours, turn it on.
    5. Pray to GOD.
    6. If it works, you'll probably have to have the keyboard cleaned.
    7. Your warranty (including AppleCare) has expired anyway. If it doesn't work, you can't take it to Apple Store without paying for the repair (if possible). You might consider calling your household insurance provider, but that depends on terms of your insurance (if you have one).

  • Spilled coffee on a MacBook Pro

I accidentally spilled some coffee on my macbook pro.  Now, the top right keys are a little bit sticky and the lights for those keys do not work?  Can this be fixed? Will it be expensive?

Yes it can be fixed and yes it might be expensive, after Apple evaluates what othere damage might have occurred. The only way you'll know is to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them check out the unit. There are liquid sensors in MBPs so they will know that there has been a liquid spill.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook Pro 15" Unibody coffee spill question...

So long story short, my fiance' spilled her coffee and it got into my macbook pro. wasn't a whole cup or anything but still not good. So certain keys are now wigging out which is totally understandable. I will be getting it repaired sometime next week. I did take the mac apart to assess the damage. From what I could see, everything inside was fine "thank god". I removed the logic board, fans, got a good look at the guts, and looks like spill was contained to just the keyboard. One thing I have noticed however since the spill. After closing the lid and the mac finally goes to sleep, upon first dim of the indicator light it will wake it self from sleep for a split second and then go back to sleep again. I've disconnected all outside devices, reset the pram, turned off bluetooth, and problem still persists. My first guess is that maybe the keyboard is sending false key strokes while sleeping because of a short. I opened up the console and it is says "wake reason = OHC1". Any one have any further insight? I have heard that this could be non spill related with this model but I have hopes that it is just a short in the keyboard causing the problem. Aside from a few keys not working and the backlighting only half working, all functions normally. I have been using an apple bluetooth keyboard in the mean time. Thanks for any further insight!

I would not consider trying to trouble shoot it with a known faulty keyboard attached. What do you think you could possibly learn with any degree of certainty?

  • Some coffee got spilled on my MacBook Pro keyboard

Some coffee got spilled onto the keyboard of my MacBook Pro keyboard (it's the newest model), when it happened I turned it off immediately and quickly turned it over to have it drip out of the keys. I blow-dryed the keys with cool air and let it sit upside down for almost five hours. I went to turn it on and it started working fine. Is there a possibility that my laptop got liquid damage if it's turning on fine? Should I take it into an Apple Store to double check? There isn't one near me so I'm trying to avoid a trip if I can.

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service ASAP. You are not qualified to handle liquid spills on a computer.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

  • Coffee spill on Macbook Pro (nothing done, still works..!?)

My sister spilled a cup of coffee on her Macbook Pro. She was very fast in turning it off and cleaning off all liquid.
Naturally she took it to the shop - they briefly checked it out and told her "it can stop working and die any time". Afraid of losing data and being without a computer she immediately bought a new one (as it was so expensive to fix it - it was not worth it).
This happened 18 months ago and this week she rediscovered the 2010 Macbook Pro 13 SSD amongst her moving boxes - I have fired it up and it still works as it did when it was new.
I do expect it now to die any time, but needless to say - I wonder, if 18 months have passed, it is not slower, no sounds are coming from it - perhaps the repair/service guys exaggerated a bit, maybe its still fine to work?  I mean...after all this time?
    Anyone with similar experience?
