Macbook Pro connected to network but won't connect to internet

My Macbook Pro is connected to the wireless network we have with a full signal strength. However, it will not connect to the internet unless I plug the computer directly into the router with an ethernet cord. Additionally, I can connect wirelessly without any problems at hot spots or other houses.
Anyone have a simple fix? I've already reset Safari. I've restarted routers and modems. I don't know what else I can do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This happens a little too often.

I think you trouble shot your problem. Get a new router.

I have a MacBook Pro here that sees all wireless networks but cannot join any. It gives a connection timeout error with every one.
Internet access via ethernet cable works just fine.

It's not uncommon for you to "see" a great many networks, dozens even, yet you not be able to connect to any of them even if they are "open" (no lock icon). There may be a number of reasons for that, such as they're too weak for a reliable connection, or the router may limit connections to only specified devices.
There is only one way to achieve a reliable network connection, and that's for you to connect to your own wireless router. Even that doesn't work if its signal is too weak or if there are many competing wireless networks in your area.
If it's your own AirPort Base Station you're trying to use but can't, the latter could be the reason. The only way to mitigate the effects of wireless interference is to use 802.11n and 5 GHz whenever practicable. Even today you may only find one or two 5 GHz networks being used in an otherwise "crowded" area.

  • MacBook Pro will turn on, but won't go past the gray screen.

Earlier today, my MacBook Pro took a small tumble to the ground.  I did not shut off, but it was working a bit slower. I decided to do a restart on it and now it will turn on, I can hear the CD drive is still operational, but it gets to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinner at the bottom and sits there.  Any suggestions or thoughts?

    Use Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
You will need a Firewire cable.
Another option is to extract the HDD from the MBP, place in an enclosure and then connect it to the iMac.
    Ciao.

  • My MacBook Pro battery is empty and won't charge, but charger is fine

My MacBook Pro battery is empty and won't charge. I did the PRAM reset when there was still some power left in the battery. The charger indicator light doesn't come on when I connect it to MacBook Pro, BUT it works just fine with my old white Mac book. This happened a few times before, and unplugging and plugging the adapter into the MacBook pro helped. Now nothing happens no matter how many times I reset the charger. Is there anything else I can do?

More than likely you need a new battery.

  • Macbook Pro connects to campus wifi but suddenly Safari/Mozilla will not load anymore.

I've had my MacBook Pro for a while now, it's still running Leopard, but that hasn't been a problem. I woke up yesterday morning and the Airport says its connected to the campus network, but when I open Safari/Mozilla/Mail, it will not load, and eventually says that the server will not respond.
I have connected to this network for over a year with no changes/problems
it literally happened overnight. I left my computer to sleep like I always do and when I woke it up in the morning, the internet wouldn't load.
internet works when I use an Ethernet cable
my roommate is sitting next to me with her newer macbook pro connected to the same network that is fucntioning just fine. So it's not the network (not that I could do anything to it if it was)
I've restarted, turned off Airport and turned it back on, deleted network preferences, put in the exact same IP address that my roommate has (hers is different from mine, but mine will not connect with the one she is connected to)...
    HELP?

I solved my issue and I believe it was router related. I have a router through Verizon and their Fios service. My router was old so I caled for a replacement. when I received thereplacement I switched it the router to only accept 802.11n and this did the trick. Problem solved, stupid router.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

    try this.
get back into your router's settings and start deleting devices that are not connected to your router.
you can also delete the ones that are connected - they'll connect again.
on the DHCP side of it, increase the amount of users that can connect/log in to your router.
see if that sorts it out for you.
    good luck.

  • HT4796 Can Windows 7 be installed on my new MacBook Pro, through my network connection?  The disc would be in my Windows desktop.

Can Windows 7 be installed on my new MacBook Pro, through my network connection?  The disc would be in my Windows desktop.

I wouldn't recommend installing through a network connection.
    For a Virtual Machine:
If you have the Win 7 media (DVD), use an app like PowerISO or MagicISO to make an ISO file of the install disc and use that.
    For BootCamp:
Use the original install media and BootCamp Assistant, to install from your DVD Drive.

Check the mage safe connector and port for any debris.

  • Laptop sees Photosmart on network, but won't connect

I have a Pavilion dv4 with Windows 7.  I have a Photosmart C4795.  My printer used to be hooked up to my desktop, but my HP Desktop has crashed and it's trash.  So now I'm trying to hook my laptop up to my printer on the network.  For two days, I was able to connect and download with no problems, but my laptop would never print.  Wouldn't even do a test page.  Uninstalled and reinstalled at least 10 times.  I ran the scan doctor and it said there was nothing wrong with my printer, but it wouldn't print a test page either.  It then had me do an internal test page and that one work, so it diagnosed that the software was bad.
All of that was yesterday.  NOW TODAY, I uninstalled and reinstalled the software.  It's the most up to date software and drivers from the HP Support page.  Now, my printer recognizes that the printer is on the network, but won't install the printer.  It did the diagnostics, then brought up the screen where it showed my computer on the left, modem in the middle, printer on the right.  It gets about halfway through setting it up, then quits and says it can't complete.  I ran the scan doctor again and it says that the full software version is not installed.  I JUST downloaded it from the website and installed it twice and it won't work.  The version I download from the website is around 146mb, but when I download it from the scan doctor page, it's over 200 mb.  I run that software and it is exactly the same.
I have tried to set it up via usb.  It gets to the 7th of the 8 steps, then it won't go any further.  Again, the printer is detected, but it says the appropriate drivers aren't there.
I have tried to set up it's own port using it's USB and a different driver, but that gives me an error.  Unable to install printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000003eb).)
Would someone please help me, and then if I reply with what it is doing next, please respond?
Please help me get through this.  Two days now and I don't have a solution.
    Just me, friebe13

  • MacBook Pro Connects to Wifi while Macbook Air and 2 iphones don't

Today when we got home from work my boyfriends Macbook air couldn't connect to the internet, he restarted the router and modem and it still didn't work, my Macbook Pro connected as usual and is working perfectly, both of our iphones can't connect either.  We tried forgetting the network on the iphones and ran through network diagnostics with the Air, at first it would fine the wireless but insist we were typing in the wrong password despite KNOWING we were doing it right and now it won't even see any of the 15+ networks in our apartment building. Any ideas?  Super non-tech savy so it might be something stupid....

  • Why can't my Macbook Pro connect to iPhone 5 in any way (lightning cable, Wi-Fi)?

I have a Macbook Pro, I bought it in June or July or 2011, so I'm not sure which model that makes it. But anyway, just recently, I noticed that when I plug my iPhone 5 into it, it does not recognize or acknowledge that my phone is plugged in at all. It doesn't show up in iTunes, or anywhere else for that matter. I've also noticed that with the lightning cable, it will only charge my phone on one side. I've tried plugging my cable into both usb ports, but still, the lightning cable only works on one side. I tried another cable, same thing, but when I plug both of them into my wall charger, both sides work fine.
So after my Macbook didn't recognize the phone through the cable, I just thought "eh, whatever, I'll wirelessly sync it." So I go to the settings on my phone, go to iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and it says "Sync will resume when "Austin *****'s MacBook Pro is available." but no matter what I do, the computer never becomes available. I've considered that it might be the phone that's the problem, because I don't have another computer to test it on, but I don't see how it could as I just got this iPhone 5 just over a month ago, and it has not been dropped, or gotten water on it or anything. If anyone can help that would be amazing, as the employees at the Apple Store like to always tell me I have to buy something new, and that isn't an option right now.

    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:

    I hope this helps!
    All the best,

  • MacBook Pro connected Cinema Display lid closed - is this alright?

I have my Macbook Pro connected to a 23" Cinema Display and I was just reading something about heat and wanted to make sure its fine to have my Macbook Pro connected to the Cinema Display with the lid closed. Actually, I'm guessing there's no problem as only rarely do the fans kick in and this has to be when the CPU is being held wide open for an extended length of time.
However, I thought I'd just bounce it off the forum to make sure this is fine. I think I asked Apple ages ago when I got the display and they told me it was fine. I've run it this way I suppose for 2.5 years so and everything runs fine. But, I know this thing can get hot when I sit it on my lap which is rare now since I have a iPhone.

It's fine to do that, but personally, I would leave the lid cracked open about an inch to aid in cooling. Air is drawn in through the keyboard.
