Macbook Pro connected to wifi, but no internet connection

Hi,
Just bought new Macbook Pro yesterday with Mountain Lion OS. When back home, trying to connect internet, unfortunately safari would always says "No internet connection". I try very hard on getting it up creating new connection on MBP but it still give the same result. So I think it should be related my router setting. The current wifi setting for my TP-Link router is WPA2-PSK, AES, channel 11 with secured password. When I changed it to NO security, supprisingly the connection is now OK and I can browse internet through Safari. The problem is I have to get it back to WPA2 security setting since my home internet is now open to my neighbourhood and of course it shouldn't be shared all around you. Anybody can tell how the router setting should work with MBP, with details on security type, AES or TKIP,CHANNEL?

That doesn't mean anything.  You can't telnet to google. lol
The ping you did above shows you that Internet access and DNS is working fine.  If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to get replies.  This means that the problem is with your browser.  Open up Safari and hit Safari/Reset Safari under it's menu.  See if that works to solve your issue.  If it doesn't, then it's a plugin or something else (maybe Proxy changes, etc.) which could be causing this.  One option you have to test is if the reset doesn't fix it, install another browser (you'll need to download the dmg via another PC and install it on the mac from a memory stick or something) and see if a 3rd party browser works.

  • Can connect to wifi, but no internet connection

So, this is my first MacBook.  I just bought it yesterday, so I believe I have the latest OS (OS X? Maybe?  I'm computer literate with PCs, but really a n00b here, and cannot even find where it would say what OS I'm using).  I have tried connecting to wifi networks using Airport at a few wifi hot spots and have about a 50/50 record.  They always connect just fine to the network, but half the time I get a "No internet connection" error.
When I try my iPhone 4 or my laoptop (running Windows 7), I have no problems.  This led me to believe that the problem is with my new MacBook.  But when I went to the apple store, the "genius"/sycophantic fanboy told me that the problem was really with the various coffeeshop wifi routers, not my MacBook.  Essentially, he said that my OS is too advanced for the routers to handle and so they need to upgrade.  This strikes me as patently ridiculous, and if he is right, it sounds more like Apple decided not to make their latest OS backwards compatible with (not even that much) older technology.  And, ergo, its really Apple's problem that I am now burdened with.
So, is this an actual, common problem?  Did Apple really decide to make its latest OS incompatible with routers that are merely 2 or 3 years old?  Or is there some kind of fix I can do from my end (I don't intend on asking all the coffeeshops in my town to upgrade).
    Thanks.

I am precluded, as a general rule, from knowing anything about the router in this (very common) situation.  This happens at about half of the wifi hot spots I go to, and the idea of having to ask a barista about their router's firmware is clearly ludicrious.
That said, I don't believe (95% sure) that I get a valid IP address when this problem happens.  (I have one now, obviously).  And I have no clue about the router's firmware.
    Thanks

  • Connected to wifi but no internet connection

I have a very peculiar issue: since today at noon, my ipad stopped to work on the wireless network.
lauching safari will result in a connection error, same for mail or for any other app that uses internet, but the wifi is alive and kicking, i have an ip address and everything is totally "fine"
The network is apple, no 3rd party routers, and was working until noon; my mac pro works just fine using wireless and wired connection to the airport extreme, same for the macbook; just the ipad cannot surf, even if it has an ip and is connected.
Is anyone ever experienced this? I have tried to turn off and on the ipad, use another network and so on, but the result is the same: gets the ip, gets connected but no apps can use internet (included vpn).

What it is? If it starts with 169., then you don't have a valid IP address. That is a typical DHCP problem. The best solution is reboot the router.

  • Macbook will connect to wifi but will not connect to internet

Lately I've been experiencing an issue with my internet, my computer will connect to wifi, but the internet will not work. I have tried multiple wifi networks, and sometimes the internet works but it is slow, or sometimes it won't work at all. For whatever reason apple.com is the only one working at the moment.. how convienent.. I have rebooted my laptop, the router and my operating system is up to date. Please help!! I'm a college student and internet is crucial for one of my classes!

    Check proxies ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies
Deselect any checked boxes on the left then click OK.
    Relaunch your browser to test.
And make sure the firewall is off. System Preferences > Securty & Privacy > Firewall
If it's on, you may need to click the lock icon to turn if off. You may be prompted for your admin password.

im connected to wifi but the internet wont work how do i make it work

Go to settings, then wifi. There, you can choose a wifi router and if needed, enter the password. You haven't provided any details in your post. Are you trying to connect to a home network?  A commercial network?

  • Why is my macbook pro running so slow and losing internet connection?

Why is my Macbook Pro downloading so slowly and losing internet connection frequently?

Write off the MS stuff as indicators for now--starting with Office 2008, they developed very long launch times. The time to launch 2008 on my old 1.25Ghz G4 and my MBP 2.2G are virtually the same. Even document opens/saves are slow compared to Office 2004 and earlier.
    1) You have adequate hard drive space so that eliminates one of the usual suspects.
    2) Check for runaway background processes. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage. Watch the processes "bubble" for about a minute to get a better picture of the usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated. My MBP shows nothing using more that about 5 percent on any given test run as long as I close all my user apps.
    3) If you have never done any sort of maintenance procedures, taht can slow you down. Simply restarting the computer a few times a week clear a lot of temporary files. You also may wish to review this article on the Mac OSX periodic maintenance scripts, which, if run, also do a lot of cleanup:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
There are other useful articles on file maintenance associated with the one. Here's the index:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
Check out articles with "Maintain" and "Tuning" in the titles.
    4) Use Disk Utility to check the SMART Status of your hard drive. A failing drive can make things slow before it makes things stop.

  • MacBook Air connects to WiFi but can't connect to internet for about 5 minutes

I have a MacBook Air running Yosemite and whenever I wake it from sleep or turn it on it says it's connected to wifi, but it's usually about 5 minutes before anything will load.
    • Happens on multiple wifi networks
         • and doesn't happen to other devices on those networks
    • Been going on for ages (since Mavericks)
    • Diagnostics says nothing's wrong
    • Still happens on other users and in safe mode.
Does this happen to anyone else / does anybody know a way around it?

    Hi jamang1999,
For that specific issues where you are connected to the internet after waking your MacBook Air up from sleep and it is not connecting to the internet, then take a look at the article below to troubleshoot the issue further. There is a section called Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet and go through those troubleshooting steps to see if it continues afterwards. I know that the troubleshooting is for OS X lion and previous version of OS X but the troubleshooting is still relevant. If it does not work and are still experiencing issues, then you may need to contact Apple for additional support.

  • My iPod 5th gen connects to wifi but the internet doesn't work.

So we were watching netflix on the ps4 and something happened and now my ipod will connect to the wifi but the internet doesn't work. everything else connects just fine to the internet just not my ipod. I've renew my lease, reset my settings and network, forgot my network and rejoined,  turn my ipod completely off and back on, turned my wifi off then back open. The IP address is 192.xxx.x.xx
its the ipod 5th generation 16gb.  With the latest update

Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Yesterday my ipod touch 4g would connect and to wifi and i was able to go on safari and search etc. but last night at 11 pm it would say that it was connected to wifi but wouldn't connect to safari it would say request timed out

it would say request timed out so i restored my ipod erased and reset it hoping it would delete the problem but it was still there it says that it is connected to wifi but will not launch safari and will bring up that message request timed out. itunes app store anything that uses internet/wifi will not work. it is not in airplane mode and wifi is on. i also forgot to mention this but it would also sometimes say that it is not connected to the internet even though i have 3 bars of wifi.

The router itself will always be sending a signal to devices connected to it.  The router could not even be connected to your modem and it will still show that you have a connection on your device.  Check your router config, reset it, and if all fails, contact your internet service provider.

  • Connected to network, but no internet connection

Just returned from a one week trip to CA with my macBook. Prior to the trip everything regarding a connection to the internet worked fine... I have an Airport Extreme network set up at home. For the first five days of my trip, everything worked fine as well. Connected to several different open networks (offered by hotels and Bed & Breakfasts (B&Bs). Then suddenly I could not get an internet connection with any browser (Safari, Firefox, Flock). At one particular B&B it worked flawlessly one evening, then the next morning at the same B&B, no internet. Yet I was connected OK to the open network. Moved on to another city, a different hotel and network, same problem. I was connected to the network, but no internet connection. In Safari, the blue bar would get as far as the http:, then it would hang there. Now having returned home to my Airport Extreme network, everything seems to be working fine again in all browsers. Any idea what I may have encountered for those two days? I have another trip planned in the near future, and would hate to have this happen again.

I'm sorry but I'm not posting to answer your problem but just to say that I have a very similar issue when connected to my home network through either wireless or ethernet- connection is erratic and pages hang despite showing an excellent signal strength. I have a divided drive and have windows installed on my Macbook. I have no problems on the windows side. My friends who have ipods and iphones have similar problems connecting to my home network. I have no problems connecting wirelessly to any other network that I've tried. This is a real shame as I want to use Mac software but end up in Windows all the time. Any light anyone can shed on this would be very welcome.

  • MacBook pro a1278 mid 2012 is connected to wifi but no internet

hello guys, i have a MacBook pro A1278 with OS X mavericks, my issue is that The computer is always connected to my wor connection, but out of the blue the internet goes off, like i tried to download a file, 100 mb, it was working property for like 5 minutes and then the download stopped and all the internet connection failed, although the MacBook was still connected to the wifi and the wifi icon was at it's maximum, then after a few minutes it was working again for like another 5 minutes and then it stopped again, i also have a windows pc and it was working property all the time.
is there a way that u can fix this?
    thanks

Even though the iPod shows as been connected, it might not have actually received a valid IP address via DHCP from your Wi-Fi access point or router.  Head to Settings -> Wi-Fi and tap the > next to the network you are connected. If 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is listed for an IP Address, then your iPod did not receive a valid IP address.  To correct this you can reboot your router by unplugging it from power for about 30 seconds.
It wouldn't hurt to also reset your iPod.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Perhaps this article would be worth at as there may be a configuration on your mother's router/modem that is preventing access.  This will require you to have admin access to the router/modem's configuration interface that is usually accessible via a web browser.

  • MacBook Pro says connected via Airport but no internet connection at all.

I have a strange problem. My MacBook pro 13" 2009 is no longer connecting to a wireless network it was previously able to get Internet through over wifi. I have not used the wifi here for quite a while 3-4 weeks so the recent update may have something to do with it, but this laptop has the most picky network cards out of all macs I have owned, refusing to connect to many routers. The strange thing was, it used to work on this one, and it's doesn't anymore while no settings have been changed. It works over Ethernet fine. My iPad and iPhone work perfectly on the same wireless. Even the windows laptop works on the network without a hitch.
Looking in the settings, it does not even obtain an address for the router, so how could it possibly be connected to it? And it gives itself the weird ip address of 192.168.1.77? Also, I am using a WEP key, but as I said no settings have changed since I last successfully used it.

The router is a Thomson TG585 a few months old not sure on firmware.

  • Macbook pro connected to network but no internet connection

    Hey all,
i have a Macbook pro, running on OS X 10.6.8,
i made a software update, where a  java update was made, an HP printer update, a Itunes ipdate and a Macbook Pro SMC firmware update 1.6.
Since then, i cant connect to the internet.
I ran network diagnostics and it says "your connection appears to be working correctly".
Same if i plug in the Lan-cable to my laptop.
Network diagnostics says that my internet is running correctly, but no browser or any other program can connect to the internet.
tried it at 2 different location (home and work) and nothing works. Other laptops have internet connection through the same router and wifi.
restarted router and wifi, did not help
restarted wifiAirport multiple times, wont help,
restarted Laptop multiple times, wont help.
renewed DHCP, and IP adress, i get a new ip adress, and it says im connected but it wont work.
    any other ideas?

  • One wifi spot my iPhone connects to wifi but not internet. All other devices connect to internet.

My iPhone connects to wifi just fine. When it does it connects to the internet just fine except in one location. My house. My MacBook Pro, my wife's iPhone and her iPad get on the internet there just fine. My Iphone's IP address it begins with a 10. At my house it occasionally will connect to the internet through wifi but I leave wifi off there because it is so intermitent.
    Any suggestions?
I have not seen this problem addressed.

Can you ping a website using either Network Utility or Terminal?

  • Able to connect to wifi but not internet.

I am able to connect to the wifi at work with my 3GS but I can't connect to the internet. There are SOME at work who are having the same problem (not all). My phone was able to browse yesterday and I've made no changes. I've tried resetting the Network settings and nothing. Password hasn't changed since yesterday.

Stephen: The problem might be similar in your referred post, but it is not the same.
I have a (more) similar problem, being that I CAN connect to my Airport Express (AE) via wifi, at least that is what the menubar and the "network settings" indicate, however while the phone indicates that I'm connected none of the phone's applications can access internet.
The app "Remote" can't find my MacBook Pro either. And that is most surely connected because I'm writing this post on the MBP connected to internet via the very same AE.
However, when I take my iPhone and MBP to my parents place (they don't have apple gear, but an old "Level One" Wi-Fi router), both internet and "Remote" works perfect.
I had no such problems before upgrading my 3GS to iOS4. Anyone?
