MacBook Pro connection timeout message for personal hotspot but works on iPad. Any suggestions?, MacBook Pro connection timeout message for personal hotspot but works on iPad. Any suggestions?

I am having issues with my personal hotspot. I can connect an iPAD to it but the MacBook Pro gives a connection timeout error. Sometimes it asks for a password but when I type in the correct one it doesn't recognise it. Any suggestions? My software is up to date and I have deleted the password in key chain but this doesn't seem to help. I am a bit technically challenged so simple language please. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Fixed!
Two things together have restored connectivity.
1.  I changed the name under Settings > General > About > Name from My Name's iPad to iPad of My Name.  I read somewhere that iOS 7.0.1 or 7.0.2 (I forget which) sometimes had issues with apostrophes here.  Easy enough to test.
2.  I then reset (again) the APN settings under Settings > Cellular Data > APN Settings > Personal Hotspot and reentered our provider's info (APN, Username, Password) there.
I don't know WHY it worked, but the personal hotspot is now happily sharing (again) internet connectivity with my MacBook Pro.

    Hi there terri900!
You may want to try configuring your router settings to match the recommended settings for iOS and OS X devices, which can be found here:

  • Connect iPhone 5 to MacBook Pro without personal hotspot

I am trying to pair my iPhone 5 to my MBP so I can use Dialectic. I keep getting an error on the iPhone saying that this device is not supported. It seems I am supposed to turn on my Personal Hotspot, but I can't do that as I have an unlimited data plan from AT&T and if I do that it will change my data plan! I must be missing something. Please help!

Not too sure if this answers but I had problems with tethering my macbook pro to new Iphone 5. This is how I did it.  Blue sync device via Macbook. Clear all devices first so that it picks up phone then go through steps. The Macbook said all was fine the phone said forget device. Don't panic.
Go to the wifi connection on mac and you're phone should be there click on it.  It will ask for a wifi code which will be on your iphone, (not the five digit number). You'll find in settings>personal hotspot, punch that in and it should work.
I know it works coz I'm writing this, after a lot of stress and confusion.  Jeez apples supposed to be easy.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1338 My macbook pro is not recognising or connecting to the personal internet hotspot on my Iphone 4. How do I rectify. Was working fine yesterday.

Since yesterday my macbook wont accept or connect to my personal hotspot on my I phone 4s. Any suggestions fellow applemeisters?

    Problem resolved
I was unable to use iPhone  4 ios 6.o.1 as a WIFI Verizon cellular hotspot to give my with my Macbook PRO OSX 10.6.8 internet access
In the past I was able to do so but this function quit working several months ago.  I blamed it on either defective hardware or IOS 6 upgrades.
My iphone showed an active hotspot and connection but I was not showing a connection on my Macbook.  I was getting an error on my Macbook saying bluetooth was not active on the device.
As a result I was not able to tether my Macbook to my iPhone hotspot through bluetooth or via USB
After MANY MANY hours researching  I found an idea for the solution in the website below by Girl.luvzer.Mac
    http://chimac.net/2010/10/21/your-connection-failed-because-the-communication-de vice-is-unavailable-make-sure-its-connected-to-your-computer-and-try-reconnectin g/
    My instructions are below:
Go to Macbook System Preferences>Network . At the top of this window, it probably will say Location:Automatic. Click that drop-down box and choose “Edit Locations”. Click on the +, and create and select a new location.  You do not need to name the location you create.
This was the key for me to get my iPhone hotspot bluetooth and tethering working with my Macbook
    Some other notes:
Your cellphone provider needs to enable hotspot capability on your cellphone service
Your iPhone settings will need to have both bluetooth and cellular hotspot turned on
You will have to pair your iPhone and Macbook
    Go to ...Settings/ Network/Bluetooth
Click the ON and Discoverable boxes
If your iphone is already shown in the box on the left press the - button to remove it
Click sharing setup to pair your Macbook with your iPhone
In your Macbook ...Settings / Network
      Turn off Airport
Select Bluetooth Pan and use the connect button to connect to your iPhone
It will take a moment for the connection to complete
Once you have done that your iPhone should provide your Macbook a wired USB or a Bluetooth hotspot!!!
Good luck, I hope this works for you as well
This was submitted via my Macbook through my newly fixed iPhone hotspot ;-)

  • HT2497 How can I connect my MacBook Pro using my personal cellular 'hotspot'?

I am a brandnew user of MacBook Pro (iOS 10.8 Mountain Lion) and am clueless!!  I've never used anything but Windows OS's.  I am attempting to connect to the internet using my cellular phone's 'hotspot'....no connection.  I then tried to connect via tethering, using the USB cable between the phone & the Mac....still not connection.  The phone "sees" the Mac, but the Mac is not "seeing" the phone.  Is there something in the computer's settings I need to change??  Thanks for any & all input!!

Plug it in. Choose the right HDMI port for the input in the TV's menu system (cosult the TV's manual as needed). Choose the TV as the audio output device in the Output tab of the Sound pane of System Preferences. You should be all set.

I have been trying to download java for my macbook pro, but for some reason the function is not recognizing the internet.  I am on and have checked several times .... I have checked through both safari and firefox but to no avail.  Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Not really a reply just some added info:
This is the error message I get saying the internet is not on, but clearly as I can send this message it has to be:
To open “Java Preferences,” you need to install a Java runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet.
I am connected through Wi-fi if that makes a difference.

  • I have a MacBook Pro core 2 duo giving me Internet problems the error message I am getting is "connection timeout" any solutions ?

I have a MacBook Pro core 2 duo giving me Internet connection problems. Every other computer around me can connect to the Internet except me. The error message I am getting is "connection timeout" I've attempted to google solutions with no luck. Help anyone ?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.

Let's try the simple approach first. Restart your router. Any change?

  • Very slow wirelesss when using iPhone 4S' personal hotspot for a MacBook Pro (MBP)...

    Hello.
Last night, I was helping a client with his old iPhone 4S' personal hotspot as shown in http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4517 web page. It uses Verizon Wireless 3G for his 4 GB data cellular connection. We got the wireless (WPA2) connection to work fine, but it was very slow like crappy dial-up modem speeds. Is this normal? iPhone's iOS v8.1.2's top screen says 1X (is this a speed number?) and left of MBP. Updated Mac OS X 10.8.5's top screen shows an infinite(?) symbol instead of that wifi arc symbol.
    Thank you in advance.

yes, 1x is a speed indicator, and it is very slow. Even with 3g speeds, hotspot will be pretty slow, but still ok for simple surfing and emails and such, streaming not so much. For hotspot, you really kinda want to have at least 4g, preferably LTE.
About that 1x speed, you may want to see if you get that everywhere or just in that location. Ideally, in a good coverage area, you should not be getting such slow speeds. Might have something to do with the building you are in though. If you get the same outdoors, and your coverage area is good, you may want to call in and have someone troubleshoot your signal.

  • MacBook Pro problem with iPhone personal hotspot connection

I think there is a problem with my airport, I can't connect to any iPhone personal hotspots anymore - I used to be able to connect to them, and now it connects but with an exclamation mark saying there is no internet connection? Any help would be great!

  • Is there any way of sharing my Macbook Pro's Wifi connection to iPhone 4 (Not Using iPhone as hotspot for laptop the other way around)

So a nasty smash destroyed both Front & Back of my iPhone 4, and since having them replaced the Wifi signal has been really weak.
I have seen other posts about screen replacement having to be done by going through the antenna, so something could be missing, or done incorrectly during the screen repair. Will definately be taking it back to the shop and finding out if It was put back together properly.
In the meantime I was wondering if it is possible to share my Macbook Pro's Wifi (always full signal in my house) directly to my iPhone either using USB cable or through bluetooth. It's not been too much of a problem but it would be nice to use my iPhone in bedroom using the Macbooks good signal.
Note: The replacement front screen on iPhone has a small gap >1mm between the screen and centre metal casing on the left side just above the Silent/Loud Switch, which can be noticed by light leaking through the gap. The metal casing also still has a small dent between the volume down buttons and silent/loud switch, again nothing drastic 1mm maximum

Here is the start of the setup:
Click on the Wi-Fi Options button and provide the needed info:
Click on the OK button. Now check the Internet Sharing box to turn it all on. If the port box you checked is no longer checked, then uncheck Internet Sharing, check the port box again, then check the Internet Sharing box again.

  • IPhone 4S Personal HotSpot not appearing in MacBook Pro or iPad2

I've been struggling for a long time detecting my iPhone 4S Personal Hotspot on my MacBook Pro and my iPad2.  Apple support has not been able to resolve the issue.  Sometimes the iPhone would show up; most of the time, not.
Recently, after learning that Siri cannot read Messages to me when I have a passcode in effect, it occurred to me that maybe the Personal Hotspot doesn't show when the phone is locked and/or passcode protected.  I've been doing some testing and I think I've demonstrated to myself that this is true.
Each time I want to connect my MacBook or my iPad to the hotspot, I find I have to slide the lock to open the phone before either piece of equipment will detect it and connect.  I also notice that it takes a long time before the hotspot appears.
With previous smartphones, the hotspot appeared quickly and was always easy to detect as long as it was enabled.
Has anyone else had the same experiences?

I've since resolved this problem - at least so I can cope with it without too much hassle.
You said your phone is unlocked.  Do you have a passcode enabled?
In my experience and testing (Apple support has been useless on this problem), I've narrowed it down to making sure the phone is unlocked and passcode disabled.  Either feature alone will block the WiFi hotspot.  [By the way, I've also learned that Siri is blocked from reading text messages, etc. when the passcode is in effect - even if you are using a Bluetooth device that is already paired with the phone.  Obviously, you must be the owner of the phone if you've pair your device to it.]
I went to my local Apple store on a Genius support visit.  I demonstrated how enabling either feature blocks my iPad's ability to detect the hotspot, and disabling both allows my iPad to see the hotspot.  The guy just said he had never seen that before, and that they are always learning new things.  He didn't do anything to elevate the case to higher level support, like Apple engineering.  I just left the store and that was it.
I've explained this to Apple support more than once and they never seem to be aware of it.  I'm supposed to call to speak with a management level guy, but I haven't remembered to make the call.
So, I walk around with an unsecured phone all the time so I can conveniently access my WiFi hotspot.  And I have to make sure the phone it unlocked until the connection is established so my computer or iPad will find it.  Otherwise, all I can see is everyone else's equipment.
Maybe people don't use the hotspot much.  Apple doesn't seem to care.

  • Can I connect my iPad and MacBook Pro both via an iPhone hotspot?

First, a little background. I have an aging MacBook Pro (~5 years old), and my netbook was smashed on the way to work last night. My cell phone (not an iPhone) crapped out a few weeks ago.
So my first priority is to replace my netbook with an iPad. When I can afford it, I also want to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro. I've also been thinking of getting an iPhone.
One thing that always confuses me is Internet connections. I currently connect my MacBook Pro to the Internet via Verizon and use T-Mobile for my cell phone.
I was surprised when an Apple salesman told me the iPhone has a "hotspot" that I can use to connect both an iPad and MacBook Pro to the Internet. But an Apple salesman at another store told me the hotspot will connect the iPad.
Can anyone offer some details? I've been browsing some of the other threads, but I still don't really understand what a hotspot is. Am I correct in understanding that as long as I have an iPhone with me, I can use it to connect my iPad to the Internet? Can I similarly use it to connect a MacBook Pro (either my 4-year-old+ model or a new model)?
What kind of connection speed does a hotspot offer? I do a lot of websurfing and web design. Would a hotspot connection be about as fast as my current connection via Verizon?
Also, is the hotspot feature available with either AT&T or Verizon?
    Thanks.

Your hotspot will be billed by AT&T or Verizon based on your iPhone's model. Only the iPhone 4 from Verizon would allow a Verizon hotspot. Others have posted information revealing that the Verizon 3G connection is somewhat slower than the AT&T service. Also, the Verizon service suspends the use of hotspot when you take a phone call. The AT&T service continues during calling.
Selecting the hotspot feature under General> Settings> Personal Hotspot will change your data plan from your previous 250MB, 2GB, or unlimited amount to a new 4GB plan that includes tethering. AT&T charges me $45 instead of my Unlimited, but No Tethering Allowed, $30.
You can connect three devices that have WiFi. Verizon hotspots can connect five. Your speed should be about the same as the iPhone 4 browsing speed on 3G. If your phone is on WiFi, the devices need to connect separately to that WiFi, not to your hotspot. I would love to see a software update that allows my WiFi connection to be shared, so I don't have to manually connect the iPods that my boys use one at a time.

  • Personal Hotspot no longer recognised by Macbook Pro

I occasionally use Personal Hotspot to keep our Macbook Pro (minimally) up to date while travelling.
Personal Hotspot was a convenient, easy to use and inexpensve tool. But it no longer works.
Our service supplier suggested updating the iPhone to IOS 6.0.1 and pairing will work. Did that, no change!
Since I last used Personal Hotspot the Macbook pro software has been rebuilt following a disk crash (Mac OS X 10.6.8).
Personal Hotspot is enabled on the Iphone. The iphone is connected by a USB cable. The iphone is not appearing in the list of network services. In the past this was automatic.
    Any suggestions out there?
