Macbook Pro Core Duo froze and now boots into grey screen

I was using my macbook pro (core duo) and just had a few apps open when it froze. I could still use my mouse but nothing else was working including force quit.
When I restarted my computer, it did the spinning wheel and apple screen and then went straight from that to a grey screen, to never come back again. Sometimes it flashes to black before entering the grey screen.
I did applejack and it finished with no errors...
I booted with the command option p and r.
I tried verbose and it gets past that and then gets stuck again at the grey screen.
Safemode boots and works fine (except my airport isn't detected) and probably some other things don't work.
I searched through other problems but couldn't find one that fit these specifications.
Any help would be graciously appreciated.

If safe boot works then it is probably a startupitem, launchagent, or launchdaemon that may be failing.  Look in your /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons, and /Library/StartupItems.  All these are suppressed in a save boot.  You could start experimenting by removing all you see in those.  Or if you have some hunch of what may be a possible culprit delete that. Or one at a time.  Whatever.
When I say delete I mean just temporarily remove them.  Observe ownership and permissions when putting them back.
Note, I don't know why any of those items would suddenly start to fail just because you machine went south.  Perhaps some plist or other data got corrupted.

  • 802.11n for MacBook Pro Core Duo's no problem!

    From a post on xlr8yourmac.com:
" So I was really ****** about only having G because of being an early adopter. So I started looking what could I do about it. Browsing the net, I found out that the new core2duo machines actually use a broadcom chip (Actually as mentioned here previously, the Core2Duo MacBook/MacBook Pros use the Atheros AR5008 Chip, although the Mac Pro uses a Broadcom chip (not sure on chip version no.) - the Apple 802.11n enabler supports both. See notes on Mac 802.11n page here.-Mike) and this chip is the same one in Dell Wireless 1500 adapters. (Dell notebook mini card)
I bought one of those Dell 1500 cards on ebay, (I searched google and found the Dell 1500 card for as low as $52.xx, although an ebay auction had over 100 of them at $90 "Buy it Now" price.-Mike) and using the great guides on ifixit, change the card on my machine.
(He didn't mention which CoreDuo Mac he had (Macbook? Macbook Pro? iMac? Mini?) but I'm assuming a Macbook or Macbook Pro since iFixit's guides don' t cover the intel-based Mini or iMac.-Mike)
On boot, the card is recognized (and even more stable than the older one). The enabler didn't want to work (wouldn't install I assume he means) on my system though. So I opened it in pacifist, (available here-Mike) and moved the file to the System folder, and magic! I have draft-N in my macbook coreduo
Hope you can publish this and it helps someone.

Just out of interest, where's the third attenna?
802.11n might work on the chip, but you won't get 11n
    performance without the third attenna.

Ok, here is the scoop, I installed the AirPort Card from a Mac Pro and it works fine. I do have an issue with my Verizon DSL router Westell 327W. It does not like the new card. So I can not connect to it. On the other hand the AirPort Express and the new Mac Pro card in the MacBook Pro love each other. The range is unbeliveable! I am reluctant to update to the 802.11n enabler right now since reading all the problems with it in the other discussions.
I am going to disable the wireless feature in the Verizon router and hard wire a connection to the AirPort Express and see how that works...
So MacBook Pro (Core Duo) first generation can be updated to take advantage of 802.11n.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo Battery Exchange

    Hey All,
I would like to ask a question. I have a Macbook Pro Core Duo, the 1,1 model of 2006. I recently found out, due to some issues i had with the battery a long time now, that its battery is part of an exchange program initiated late 2006. I found online that the serial number of the battery matches (ends with U7SC). However, i cannot find the website and the link i find is dead (404 error). Do you think that i can still go to an Apple Store and request a replacement? I know its a long time, but there is still a replcement program for the 1st generation iPod Nano, so it doesnt seem unreasonable to me. Thanks.

The original program provided a reasonable time period in which you were to apply for a replacement and return the defective battery. As I recall it was not an open ended program, but you can always ask. The worst that can happen is they say, "No." In any event, any battery you had from that far back would no longer be functioning today, anyway.

  • Some possible good news for MacBook Pro Core Duo owners....

    All,
I believe I am now running 2.4GHz 802.11N on my MacBook Pro Core Duo.
    I have a Belkin F5D8071 ExpressCard installed.
I also have the new Airport Extreme.
Before I got the AE, I tried to run the 802.11N enabler with the Belkin card installed. No go. The enabler said my hardware didn't meet the minimum requirements.
But, I received my AE yesterday and installed the Airport Utility on the MacBookPro while the Belkin card was plugged into the ExpressCard slot.
As I was watching the installation, I noticed that the enabler installed!!!
So I switched the AE to N only 2.4GHz (Belkin support has no mention of support for 5GHz N for the F5D8071). And my MBP joined the network!
So I investigated some more. I opened Network Utility and it said my link speed was now 144Mbps. And the MAC address began with 00 17 3F. That is registered to Belkin. The Belkin card was active! But I saw no power light on the Belkin card. So I went into IORegistryExplorer and found the entry for the ExpressCard, it said the IOVendor was Apple. So what I THINK is happening is the Apple Driver is now recognizing the Belkin card and the driver just doesn't know how to drive the lights on the card. But it does recognize the chipset on the Belkin card. Which Belkin says the chip is made by Airgo.
I ran a quick speed test by copying a 1GB file from a wired PowerBook to the MBP. It only took 12 minutes to copy!!! Sweet!!! I have "N" speeds on a Core Duo MacBook Pro.
Now one limitation is the Belkin card does not support 5GHz. But there is hope for CD MPB owners. Hope this helps others.

I have a February (very early) MacBook Pro Duo. I bought the Belkin F5D8071 card, plugged it in and installed the Airport Extreme software including the system 802.11N enabler. I set the AE to the 802.11N only mode and it does not work! Any suggestions? I would think that Belkin will eventually come out with their own soft ware patch for OSX. Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo shuts off intermittently

my 2006 macbook pro core duo with 2gb of ram shuts off intermittently.
here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
tried running the hardware support disc by holding down D. it starts to boot the disc and then the computer shuts off. it does this without fail right when the disc starts to boot. the screen flashes a few times and then kaput.
i've tried installing snow leopard. it turns off right around the 25% mark.
i've taken a very large house fan and pointed it directly at the exhaust vents of the computer. the computer stays MUCH cooler to the touch when doing this as i suspect(ed) the exhaust fans are broken. it doesn't help. the computer turns off when booting the hardware disc (at the same point) and while installing snow leopard.
i've taken the two 1gb dimms out and tried to install snow leopard utilizing each of them (1gb at a time) and it still dies.
any suggestions? if i can't get apples hardware testing tool to run and i can't install an OS, what are my options?

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz with 1GB+2GB memory module

Is it possible to install an 2gb modulle along with my 1gb module witch came standard with my macbook pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz?
Im thinking about the following modulle:
    Kingston KTA-MB667/2G
    (Any other suggestions?)
And just for my information is it possible to install 2x 2gb memory?
    Thanks!

But i still have a few questions:
Is the 2gb modulle not supported or the total of 3gb
    is not supported?
I want to know it absolutely 100% for sure becouse i
would love the 2gb addition. And i don't want a buy
    something wrong :P
From what I have read in various forums a single 2GB module will work in the Core Duo machines. 3GB is not supported however. People who have tried adding 3GB (2GB +1GB) to a Core Duo report the computer would not boot.
I am not sure why you would want to use a single 2GB module though. Perhaps if you were wanting to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo later?
I would say if your going to try to use a single 2GB module understand the risks. i.e. I don't how much people actually tested for stability etc. other than to try it and say yeah it works. You do loose the dual-channel configuration for whatever that is worth.
I would make sure you purchase from a place that has a liberal return policy if your going to try it. Just in case your not happy with it.

  • What will happen if I install Lion on my macbook pro core duo??

What will happen if I install Lion on my macbook pro core duo? I have one of the first Intel MacBook Pro's with a Core Duo processer, I'm having hard drive problems so want to format it and re-install my OS. I can't find my Snow Leopard disk so the easiest thing to do would be to download Lion but I have been told that my MacBook needs to have a Core 2 Duo processer so I just wondered if anyone else has tried Lion on a MacBook like mine??

    Nothing.
Lion will not run on a core duo, it needs a core 2 duo as a minimum
    see Technical Specifications
Also you will need SL running to access the App Store to download Lion. So In a number of ways this won;t work.

  • Cant upgrade Airport Extreme on Macbook Pro Core Duo to 802.11n

I have an original Macbook Pro Core Duo, purchased not long after Apple's announcement of "Bootcamp", and it has a "Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g).
From what I can tell from various documentation around the web, this should be upgradable to 802.11n with Apple's 802.11n Enabling software, however it tells me that the hardware is not compatible.
If anyone can suggest what I am doing wrong, or whether I miss out, that would be good.
Also, assuming it can not be upgraded, will running my local Airport network in "802.11n 5GHz 802.11a compatible mode" affect the speed of my other 802.11n devices on the network?
    Thanks.

So you're basically saying 'Link Speed' shows the current connection? If so, the problem resolved itself. Sorry, my bad. Thanks anyways.
(My Time Capsule hasn't arrived yet. I'm currently using an older version of Airport Express.)
Another thing. When I asked at the local Apple Center for the 802.11n card, they told me, the card itself is not sold separately and even if so, it could not be exchanged, since it's unremovably attached to the logic board. Why do they tell the customers something like that? I mean, if Apple doesn't want the users to make changes like that, fine. Then they should say so. But why make up stories in order to dissuade people from their ideas? Is that common policy?

  • Ram limit in macbook pro core duo

    hi
I was wondering what the limit of the macbook pro core duo is. I know it says 2 gb but has anyone tried a 2gb chip + 1gb chip? I also know the core2's can do 3gigs.
I have had laptops that thave worked with way more than the specs said. My pismo's limit according to apple was 512mb ram I have had 1GB in that for many years. I think the 512 mb chip was the larges one at the time the computer was released so thats what was reported. is it the same thing with the first generation macbook pro's?
    thanks
    t

According to Apple's specs the limit for the MBP CoreDuo is 2 GBs. The limit of the Core2Duo is 4 GBs although only 3 GBs is user accessible.
The spec limit for the Pismo is 1 GB (512 MB per slot.) When new models are released sometimes there isn't RAM available to suit the limit of the model, so Apple can only certify a max based on what's currently available. You will find this is true of many older Mac models such as the Pismo.

  • MacBook Pro Core Duo 1.83 GHz fans (0 rpm)

Working on a friends macbook pro core duo 1.83GHz 1,1 - It’s been shutting down intermittently; he’s been using a laptop cooler and it helped some. I installed iStat Pro and  SMC Fan Control and neither the left or right fan are spinning (0 rpm). I figure dust bunnies preventing fans from turning; took the top case apart and much to my surprise it looks as though the fans never spun. Ever! Not a speck of dust inside either one. I powered it up and neither even tries to spin; trying to jump start them with a push does nothing. All connectors look solid, nothing burnt.
Any suggestions other than new logic board?

Depends. Are the fans simply not working? Are they connected to the motherboard? Is the motherboard not working? Have you tried
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). There may be any number of explanations none of which you can know without taking it in for repair unless you have the repair equipment and know-how.

My MacBook Pro Core Duo from 2006 shuts down randomly requiring frequent reboots to the point I had to abandon doing any project or anything on this MacBook Pro. • 23" Display + MacBook Pro Core Duo?

Just ******* after an 23" Apple Cimima Display (ACD). But wondering wether or not my laptop will be able to drive it properly.
I have a MacBook Pro 15.4" with a 2GHZ Core Duo Processor with 1GB of RAM and the ATI X1600 GPU with 128 MB of RAM. I'm a bit annoyed I opted for 'only' 128MB, 256MB would have really increased the shelf life of the computer.
When I play new games on the maximum resolution (1440 x 900) I can't have all the graphics options on other wise it goes a bit 'jumpy'. Does this mean that the even higher resolution on the 23" ACD will make it worse. Also I noticed Cover flow is a bit jumpy sometimes, is that because of my measly 128MB?
And does the ACD work well in Windows XP and or Vista.

i am running the MacBook Pro - Core Duo 2GHz with 23" Apple Cinema Display, and there are no issues running native resolution (1920x1400) with games like Warcraft III: Frozen Throne and World Of Warcraft. The book will handle it nicely... also do not get put-off by the v.ram being 128MB, is very unlikely you will be able to run the full video ram resource, unless you generate 3D animations, etc.

  • HT1338 I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is starting slow and opening with some of the programs. How can I fix the problem?

I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is slow in starting up and loads a number of probrams. How can I fix the problem?

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the slowness still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.
    Reboot normally and test.
