MacBook Pro Core i5 10.6.5 (problems with formatting and clean install)

A friend of mine is wanting to sell me his brand new MacBook pro. He wants to wipe the hard drive and get me back to the way he received it. He does not have the cd's that came with it to do this. Me being a pretty avid computer technician I tried every possible way of restoring this laptop and wiping the hard drive. Since its running the newest os 10.6.5 I cannot seem to access a cd or usb drive with snow leopard 10.6.3 to wipe and reinstall. Its like the only cd that will work is the one that came with the laptop in the first place. Something to do with recognizing the newest hardware. Now I tried on a last years addition Macbook with a 10.6 cd and was able to access the cd and usb dmg image without a problem, but when I try on this core i5 macbook I cannot access either usb or dvd. Does anyone have any input to share with me. If you have any questions whatsoever I will answer them np.

Yeah he is a rich kid who really doesnt care, he dropped it and did very minor damage. Put it this way he doesnt want to bother with it, so he is selling me the macbook for a 1,000 dollars and just requested that I do a complete wipe. Of course after screwing with it for a few hours I told him he needs to order backup cd's. The problem is he might change his mind by the time he ever gets around to getting the cd's. Anyway I was hoping someone might just have a little secret on what might or might not work in my situation. I mean what is the real difference between last years model and this years model the hardware correct? No upgrade cd is going to have anything newer than what is on the laptop currently. Is there a beta cd newer than 10.6.5. I just need to find a dmg image 10.6.5 or newer to complete my task. Anything older will not work.

My MacBook Pro has 10.5.8 but came with 10.5.7 install disc and won't boot up and can't reinstall.
the disc is spinning and I see the apple on the screen with the spinning gear and after a while it just turns off OR the few times it does get past that point when I go into disc utility it tells me that it can not install on this machine!
It's driving me crazy, please help!!!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem.

  • Will Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo perform well enough with Mainstage.

    Hi there,
I normally keep each of my macs for about 4-5 years before upgrading, and its about that time for me. I currently have a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB Ram, and am leaning towards getting a new 27 inch imac for my home studio. My alternative is getting the 15 inch mac book pro retina, which I could still hook up to a large display at home, but also use for live performances.
My question is has anyone had any experience running Mainstage (2 or 3) on a Core 2 Duo, and does it run it well enough to process reverb and maybe chorus for one vocalist, and a couple of guitar effects for an acoustic guitar?
The reason I'm leaning towards the iMac, is because my configuration will likely be $400-600 less expensive than the macbook pro retina, the size of the screen, and the ease of not having to plugging a laptop into all my peripherals whenever I enter my studio. This will only be viable however, if my macbook pro is capable of handling mainstage duties.
A couple of notes, I'm aware I can always get a external monitor for a macbrook pro, but am interested to hear anyone elses experience with either an intel core 2 duo running Mainstage, or your experience using an iMac vs a Macbook pro for your home studio.
    Thanks in advance!

I have a mid-2009 MBP with a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of RAM and MainStage 3.0.1 runs very well.  I recently played a pit orchestra job with Alicia's Keys as my primary piano sound from within MainStage and there were no problems (I did alias the patch throughout the show but that's just good resource useage).
I suspect you would have a similar experience on your current hardware.  Buy MainStage and try it out.  Its only $30 or so and you can run it on any Mac you own so you really won't waste the money.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro does not start. Grey screen with logo and status bar going on forever.

I have a Macbook Pro, late 2010 running with OS Mavericks. Lately it became very slow but never had major issues like crashing. Lat night, I tried a hard restart because it was stuck and I cannot get it to restart ever since. I get sound and grey screen with logo. The status bar is going on forever but does not boot. Can anyone help, please?

    Try a safe boot:

  • I want to install hybrid drive in Macbook pro. I bought my Mac book with lion and am now running mountain lion. I was told I needed install disk to set up new drive before restoring from my time capsule. Is this correct and if so how do I get disk osx10?

I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Sorr if this sounds redudant.. Thank you in advance

Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP.  Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear.  Select the 'restore' icon on the right.  When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility.  Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro freezes at startup on grey screen with apple and spinner

I was on Firefox and suddenly the screen froze. 10-15 minutes later i still couldn't do anything on it so i had to force power my laptop off by holding down the power button. Normally when I have this sort of issue, this will solve it. But when I try to turn my laptop back on it gets to the grey screen with the apple logo and little spinner thing and just stays on that screen forever. I'm not really sure what to do now. A couple articles suggested "reseting the PRAM" and I tried that but it didn't help. If you have any suggestions if really appreciate it. And I'm not really sure if i have everything backed up and I really don't want to lose all my pictures so if you could keep that in mind if you have any ideas I'd appreciate it. thanks!

Could be problems with the boot drive, corrupted system and or a incompatible/old outdated third party kerenel extension file..

  • E71 - Problems with dictonary and languages instal...

    Hi to everybody!
I have a problem with my dictonary but I can't find a solution.
    My firmware version is 110.07.127 09-10-2008 rm-346 nokia e71-1 (17).
My default pre-installed language is English.
I have installed 2 languages in the memory card: Italian and Turkish.
At this point, I have tried to install (in the memory card) another language (Croatian) but at the end of the language installation the dictionary forced me to remove one language.
I have also tried to uninstall languages by Application Manager with no success...when I have tried to reinstall languages, I have got the same message.
I can't find a solution to this problem.
    Can you help me?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Bye bye.

    I'm very disappointed
I can't believe that E71 only allows the installation of max 3 languages!

  • Problem with downloading after clean install

Since doing a clean reinstall of my Lion system, I'm having problems downloading some of the small Apps that I use.
In Safari, I get a message saying there's not enough space on my HD - and on Chrome, I get a 'Canceled' message.
I've repaired permissions - no difference.
Strangely, sometimes the download works (with Safari) even though it gives the free space error.
(There is over 359 GB of space on my HD).
    Andy

    Hi ...
    Go to ~/LIbrary/Safari
Move the Downloads.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac... try a download.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

I have a MacBook Pro core 2 duo giving me Internet connection problems. Every other computer around me can connect to the Internet except me. The error message I am getting is "connection timeout" I've attempted to google solutions with no luck. Help anyone ?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.

  • 802.11n for MacBook Pro Core Duo's no problem!

    From a post on xlr8yourmac.com:
" So I was really ****** about only having G because of being an early adopter. So I started looking what could I do about it. Browsing the net, I found out that the new core2duo machines actually use a broadcom chip (Actually as mentioned here previously, the Core2Duo MacBook/MacBook Pros use the Atheros AR5008 Chip, although the Mac Pro uses a Broadcom chip (not sure on chip version no.) - the Apple 802.11n enabler supports both. See notes on Mac 802.11n page here.-Mike) and this chip is the same one in Dell Wireless 1500 adapters. (Dell notebook mini card)
I bought one of those Dell 1500 cards on ebay, (I searched google and found the Dell 1500 card for as low as $52.xx, although an ebay auction had over 100 of them at $90 "Buy it Now" price.-Mike) and using the great guides on ifixit, change the card on my machine.
(He didn't mention which CoreDuo Mac he had (Macbook? Macbook Pro? iMac? Mini?) but I'm assuming a Macbook or Macbook Pro since iFixit's guides don' t cover the intel-based Mini or iMac.-Mike)
On boot, the card is recognized (and even more stable than the older one). The enabler didn't want to work (wouldn't install I assume he means) on my system though. So I opened it in pacifist, (available here-Mike) and moved the file to the System folder, and magic! I have draft-N in my macbook coreduo
Hope you can publish this and it helps someone.
    -Julian"
    William

Just out of interest, where's the third attenna?
802.11n might work on the chip, but you won't get 11n
    performance without the third attenna.
    Regards
    Paul
Ok, here is the scoop, I installed the AirPort Card from a Mac Pro and it works fine. I do have an issue with my Verizon DSL router Westell 327W. It does not like the new card. So I can not connect to it. On the other hand the AirPort Express and the new Mac Pro card in the MacBook Pro love each other. The range is unbeliveable! I am reluctant to update to the 802.11n enabler right now since reading all the problems with it in the other discussions.
I am going to disable the wireless feature in the Verizon router and hard wire a connection to the AirPort Express and see how that works...
So MacBook Pro (Core Duo) first generation can be updated to take advantage of 802.11n.

  • Who has a brand spanking new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo?  Comments?

    Hi,
Ok, it's been almost 3 months since I posted a similar post asking for experiences with the new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo.
Please let me know how things are working, whether you went 5400 or 7200 internal (my main concern), pros and cons, size of screen (15" or 17"), etc...
Got my eyes on a 17", but don't know which internal to do.
    Thanks!
PS - I may go iMac 24" (because it has Firewire 800) and keep this ol' PB G4 1 gightz for portability... thoughts?

If you want to use Logic, then 15 inch screen is a must. There is not enough > space on the 13 inch to view Logic, especially when you open the soft synths.
well yes... or, in my case, the 15 inch screen was still not enough so I went for the 17. it has exactly the same res as the 20" cinema display which I was already used to with logic, so I'm happy. plus I never use this machine as my laptop to carry around (I kept my powerbook for that) so I didn't need to compromise on getting something that was still not too big to be a comfortable laptop. but I think if you do want to work with logic effectively and still have a laptop that's a practical size to use as a general laptop, the 15" is the right choice.
what internal speed drive did you go with? 5400 or 7200
I went for the 7200rpm drive. have you read all the information out there on the net about the new PMR technology that's used on the 160/5400 and 200/4200 drive options in the MBPs? there are some very comprehensive benchmarks that have been run which show that there's not as much of a dramatic difference anymore between the 7200 and the 5400. for some operations under certain conditions, the 5400 actually appeared to be faster.
you're not planning to use the internal drive for audio though, are you?
my reasoning for getting the 7200 drive is the following. OSX permanenty and automatically uses disk-based virtual memory just in regular operation. it is constantly creating and reading swap files, as well as just referencing little bits of whatever data that the apps and the system need to run. this VM use becomes heavier the more your actual physical RAM starts being used up. now seeing as I know that I'm going to be running heavy logic sessions, using up as much RAM as I can get with samples and just general everything.. I decided I needed to have the snappiest system drive I could get. even given the benchmarks for the PMR drives, I still felt that fast read/write access speeds and the fastest seek time possible is what I needed to have optimal performance. sure a 5400rpm PMR drive might have great specs for a lot of things. but when the system needs to be able to find whatever swap files or system resource as quickly as possible, I still think you can't beat a disk that is just physically spinning faster.
the other thing I've done is this. when I first got the machine, I reformatted it and did my own custom install of OSX. traditional drives perform best when they are less than half full. from what I've read, anything down to 30% full is still on an improving curve, and maybe it gets better still even less full. so I scaled back the install to as lean a system as I could. I've installed only the most important apps that I need, and I definitely did not install the iwork and office trial software. after that, I used software called monolingual to remove even more language localizations (which are added with app support) on top of what I had already left out in my custom install. this got me back almost another GB of space. also, my itunes library is not on my MBP.. I've kept it on my powerbook. the only times I ever want to listen to music from my itunes library on the MBP is when the powerbook is nearby anyway, seeing as the powerbook is the only machine that I ever take anywhere. so, the library just appears in itunes on the MBP as shared music. my iphoto library is locally stored on my MBP though, because iphoto runs so much faster on this machine.. but this is the only concession to include personal files that I've made on the MBP. so, out of a 100GB system drive, I still have 62GB of free space left, and I'll keep it as close to that as I can.
as for my project audio and my sound library, it's all on an external FW800 drive. but I'm also considering getting an e-SATA card and getting a drive for that, because it will be even faster and will free up the FW bus to have full-bandwidth use of something like liquid mix. we'll see.
anyway, so far so good. like I said in my first post, logic is running like a demon. in general, this machine is running real fast for everything, like a fast desktop.
but I think the problem with your question is.. it's going to be hard for anyone to be able to tell you how it would have been had they gotten a different drive. I have no idea if my system would be running logic any less fast if I'd gone with the 5400. my instincts tell me that maybe it'd have slightly less of an edge, but I can't really say. it's probably true that if I was using my 7200 drive less cautiously than I am, and that it was getting close to full, then it would probably slow down a bit more dramatically than a 5400 would have, if I had one of those and it was getting full. this is to do with the fact that higher data density on the same sized platter can mean faster seek times only when they are starting to get fuller, and also to do with aspects of how PMR disks work. but I think that a well managed and lean 7200 drive that is much more than half full will still give you a slightly perkier system than a 5400 PMR drive used at its best. there's not really any way I can know this for sure though.
end of the day, I don't honestly think logic would run like a dog with a 5400rpm PMR drive. but if you want the absolute best performance you can get, you're better off keeping a lean system drive, trying to keep it at least only half full or better.. and then using a fast external for your projects and sound library. in that case, I don't see the point of getting a 160GB internal drive, just so that you have more space to keep empty.
but if you want to use the machine for multiple purposes and you could really use that extra disk space, then I still think logic will run more than fine. compared to your powerbook, there's no way you'll be dissapointed.. it's like having a dual 2.5ghz G5, if not faster, only in a less than one inch thick case that you can carry in your bag.

  • MacBook Pro Core i7 + Windows 7 Bootcamp issues

I recently bought a brand new MacBook Pro Core i7 2.66Ghz with 8GB Ram and 500GB 7200rpm HD and Hi-Res display.
When I received it, I updated all Mac OS X software via software update.
I then created a 70GB Bootcamp partition to install a new full copy of Window 7 Ultimate.
I started with the 64bit version of Win 7, but as has been noted here there are some issues with the driver packages and even after managing to get the 64bit version of the Bootcamp 3.1 driver package update to install in Windows (having first installed Bootcamp 3.0 drivers), the wireless driver would not install or work, nor would the NVidia driver, so I had a very odd display aspect and low res support. There may well have been other drivers not working either, but these two really stood out.
Despite the Bootcamp 3.1 driver package apparently being installed (as reported by "About Bootcamp", the 3.1 package was still being offered to me in Apple Software Update. I tried to install again, and again it still showed as being available to install. Obviously some issue's here.
So I decided to try the Windows 7 32bit edition instead, as I don't necessarily need the 64bit version to run the Windows apps I need.
I deleted the Bootcamp partition and started again. I ended up in the exact same situation with Windows 7 32bit as I had done with Windows 7 64bit - wireless device without a driver, NVidia drivers not installed. This time I had used the Bootcamp 32bit driver packages.
In the end I've opted to just install it via VMware as a pure virtual machine. This works fine, but for what I do in Windows, I prefer to have a Bootcamp setup.
Is there a general issue with the new MacBook Pro's and Windows 7 despite Apple releasing updated driver packages? Do these new driver packages handle the dual GPU setup properly?
I have read a number of "How to's..." for installing Windows 7 on the a MacBook Pro, but none have been successful for me. Am I wasting my time for now and need to wait for Apple to update Bootcamp for the 2010 MacBook Pro's, or am I just missing something in the way I'm doing this? I can't believe it shouldn't be this hard?

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my brand new 15" MBP right now.
The only problem I'm having is the USB controller issue that is reported in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2411685&start=30&tstart=0
I ran the Boot Camp assistant, made the partition, rebooted with my 7 DVD, formatted the partition, performed a clean installation, & then installed the drivers from the OSX DVD when Windows booted the first time.
Replaced the NVIDIA drivers with the latest Verde release. 258.96notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
Everything seems to be running just fine at this point.
