Macbook Pro CPU system usage up to 98% for no reason

I really hope someone can help me out here as I am really lost at the moment. This is my first post so I apologise in advance in case I posted in the wrong forum.
I updated my Macbook Pro (late 07 model) last week with 10.5.7 and smc 1.3 (software update not combo). My MBP has 4GB ram, all previous updates installed without any hitches and no new programs installed.
Ever since then I have been having trouble with my MBP, mainly it would get really sluggish after one hour (almost to the second, no kidding, I timed it). I use Activity Monitor and Console to see what's hogging the machine can see that the CPU system usage goes to 95%+ while no new activities/programs have been launched.
I tried many 'remedies' such as reinstalled the update using the combo download, disabled spotlight, disabled mobileme, reset smc/pram, turned off screen sharing and all to no avail.
I reside in Asia bought my MBP here and therefore don't get to call Apple and ask their technicians and the two advises I got from the dealers here are (1) I am now a proud owner of a MBP brick and (2) I might get a chance to 'resurrect' it when there's a smc 1.4 update.

Yes you are right. I did not ask AM to 'Show All Processes' just 'My Processes'. After reading your post I restarted my MBP, started AM straight away, chose 'Show All Processes' and waited... Sure enough, the most likely 'culprit' is 'AgentDaemon'.
After some googling I found that it maybe related to a program called 'Network Magic' which I have been using for a year and a half and survived previous system upgrades by Apple.
I shall look for a way to safely and cleanly remove this program from my system.

i'm really worried about my macbook pro, it's a 13'' retina 2012 model. After watching a late night movie last night i just closed the lid and went straight to bed as usual. To my surprise when i flipped open the lid this morning it only made the apple sound when turned on but didn't display anything. I tried switching it on and off several times but nothing changed. So i connected it to an external display and it worked fine. The funny thing is i never dropped it or spilled any liquid on it. Now i'm wondering what could be the cause and i'm hopping someone might be abble to explain this....Could it be the lcd screen, the video card or graphic processor or could it be the logic board?? Help.reseting the System Management Controller won't wipe my SSD drive will it?
No, but if you don't already have a backup, you must back up immediately, before you reset the SMC or do anything else. -
Macbook pro 15 inch crashes every other day for no reason, how can i resolve this issue
my macbook pro is connected to an external monitor and i use apple key board and magic mouse. for the past few weeks, it has been crashing almost continously (at least once or twice a week) and i have to restart the computer. this has never happened before and i haven't added any new software to it that i may think can cause the problem.
what can i do to check on this and how can i fix it.

If not, then that really isn't a crash, and you need to learn how to break out of the issue in question.

Your Console application will have System log files which may indicate what application or driver was trying to launch at the time of the panic.
The non-kernel panic pseudo crashes come in a variety of flavors:
1. Spinning colorwheel as a result of a single hung application. Try command-option-escape to bring the force quit window to force quit the offending application which usually will be highlighted in red. Select it, and click force quit. Your data will not be saved from the saved app, but it does say the application in question may have run out of disk space*:

Or is incompatible with some driver or operating system data on your machine.
2. Spinning colorwheel as a result of a system optimizer. Don't trust any application that cleans system cache. Doesn't matter if it is browser cache, but system cache should be only fixed in troubleshooting situations, on

3. Spinning colorwheel as a result of a driver issue. If the driver in question hasn't been tested with the operating system, it may fail to work when certain peripherals are connected.
4. Frozen mouse pointer with same symptoms as 1,2,3.
5. Splotched pattern under mouse pointer. Generally means a hardware issue with the graphics chip.
6. Unexpectedly quitting applications or frozen applications as a result of no kernel panic nor compatibility issue. Thsoe may happen if they run into bad RAM without panicking*:

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009 and the screen randomly turns black on me for no reason while I'm using it? It takes anywhere from 5 seconds to 1 minute to turn back on and no matter what I do it just has to fix itself so idk if it is going in to sleep mode or what. Anyone know the issue? Thanks.
Run through them and stop after #16 or if the problem stops, or if something tells you something severe (like hardware test giving a error)
If you can backup your personal data off the machine, you should do that first.
Hardware issues we cant' fix, only a few things may fix it.
Software issues we can fix, but right now we don't know what is causing your issue as we can't see it obviously.
So your going through a process of elimination to try to give us a clue what's the problem and then we can advise a course of action.
If you feel this is way over your head, then just make a appointement with Apple and/or your local PC/Mac specialist.

I have a brand new macbook pro, had it about 3 wks so I'm frustrated to be having problems already. My CPU system usage stays around 89%, but my user is like 3%. Haven't downloaded any big apps or anything onto it. Imported my itunes library, not a huge one. Anyway I'm frustrated and annoyed because my computer is running very slow and it's stupid.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about, but there's nothing there that is using 89%. Right now I have 2 apps running. Activity monitor, Safari. Activity monitor is showing 3.2%, Safari 1.3%. The rest of the stuff is either 0 or 0.01.

New Macbook Pros CPU/GPU activity vs old Macbook white
I have a white Macbook C2D with GMA950 and I getting pretty tired of hearing the fans rev up when I use CoverFlow or when I watch Youtube videos. I need some insight on the Macbook Pros (13 inch) with the 9400m. For those who had a white Macbook similar as mine and now have a new Macbook Pro, do you see a big difference in the fan activity and heat dissipation?
I also like to play Warcraft 3 once in a while from OS X, so is the Macbook Pro with 9400m way more quiet than the Macbook with the GMA950?
It's time to move on for me, can't tolerate it anymore that my computer makes so much noise in the middle of a class or in the library as I scroll my documents in CoverFlow or when I use ArcGIS with Windows XP in Parallels.
So is the Macbook Pro quiet quiet quiet?
Message was edited by: yvThere is going to be a direct relationship to CPU/GPU usage and the fan speeds. Any virtual machine you run will eat up allot of resources as it works harder. Also while playing games like Warcraft you will need to keep the settings turned down to keep the MacBook quite. Over all I would consider all the current MacBook Pro's quite. But that's just my opinion.

I have just purchased a Canon Pixma MG2900 printer and need to find a driver for this printer that will work with my MacBook Pro Operating System OSX Version 10.4.11.

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule. There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up. I did a full reset of Time Machine. I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up. Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

I just got a message on macbook pro: The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" was installed improperly. Please try uninstalling it, or contact the product 's vendor for an update.

Maybe your looking in the wrong "Library". On my Mavericks; I open the HD to see a folder below the Library Folder called "Systems". Open the Systems Folder to see a "Library Folder". Open that library folder to see "Extensions folder". Open the extensions folder to find the "AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" and delete that extention. Following Lanny's post, do this:
1st- Close iTunes.
2nd- Delete the system extension “AppleUSBethernetHost.kext” from here:
//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext
3rd- go to iTunes 11.4 download, here: https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
click on the "Download Now" link.
4th- Find the downloaded iTunes11.4.dmg file, open it, now open the Install iTunes.pkg
After the re-install as above I got the successfully installed window and no “pop up”

The operating system can be found by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About this Mac"
Under "Mac OS X" should be the Version 10.6.x, clicking Software Update will update the operating system via the internet. -

and check out the relative values for the system you're currently using versus the one you're going to buy. My guess is a fullly spec'd MBP Retina will do the job, but you're undoubtedly better qualified than anyone on here to tell what kind of a machine you need. -
i want to change my apple id on my macbook pro in the user info. it ask for a password...i am typing in my password to the apple id but it will not accept it....how to solve it ?
I'm afraid that you may be confusing two different 'passwords' - there's your Apple ID (the user name and password that you used to get into these forums) and then there's your computer user name and password - usually two seperate user names and passwords.
If you want to change your password for your user account on your computer, go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock the preference pane. Then you can select your user name and change your password there. Changing a user name is a bit complex and I don't think you want to try that!

I have a MacBook Pro and an 1TB WD my passport for mac. I bought a second hard drive to act as back up and when I went to do this the original passport won't mount. It is showing in disc utility but it will not repair. I am told the mac cannot repair it and I need to back up the files and then restore the hard drive. But I can't open the hard drive to move the files onto the new one!

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?
It's almost impossible. The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that. Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15. In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
