Macbook pro cracking at hinge

My Macbook pro (bought in november 2008) has started to crack!! It seems like it's getting worse... It looks just like this:
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/141840-new-unibody-macbook-pro- cracking-hinge.html
Do you think Apple will replace it?

I have the similar problem but my local official apple store told me that it wasn't cover by warranty. They said they could not find any existing case or documentation on this problem thus it is not manufacturer defect and I will have to pay $1100 if I want to fix it.
I would be grateful if you could give me some information regarding this internal document you are referring in your post, so I can find out more and go back to them with this internal document. Thank you

  • Macbook Pro WEAK monitor hinge AFTER apple repair! PLEASE help!

Hey everyone, I am using a 2010 MBP with a 15" hi res display. I had the computer for 3 months with no problems and then the display broke (wouldnt turn on) so apple replaced it. Once they replaced it, i noticed the display was not as strong. To help you all understand this better, let me give you some background information. I am a DJ and music producer and I play at various venues quite often. The problem I am having, is when my computer is on my laptop stand, and the bass hits from the venues sound system, the monitor will wobble down when placed on my laptop stand (http://www.safecomputingtips.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/irizer-laptop-s tand.jpg). This NEVER happened before the display was replaced, nor does it happen on my 13" 2009 MBP. To get a sense of what im talking about, if you watch the end of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmN9p9z3KgA) it demonstrates how the screen will fall down with just gravity. While no one would ever use a computer like that, while it is on the laptop stand its position is very similar. When he holds the macbook body vertical, it causes the screen to fall down with gravity. Before my macbook was replaced, it NEVER did that. My 2009 MBP has had TONS of wear and tear and doesnt do that. I went into the apple store and tried it on EVERY macbook pro in the store, 13 15 and 17 inch models, NONE of them fell with  gravity. This started happening when i got the screen replaced. I have gone into the apple store and have had the display replaced for weak hinges 2 or 3 times now, and every time i get it back it is no better. My computer was out of repair yesterday, I took it into apple tonight (20 mins ago) and I was told by a manager that this is within "normal" specs for a "normal" user. Which is true, this wouldnt bother anyone who doesnt use a laptop stand and plays in clubs; but i do. He told me there is nothing he can do, and that I would just have to deal with it (of course he said it much nicer). What i dont understand is that I paid 2,800 for a computer that worked PERFECTLY until the screen died, and once it was replaced due to APPLES fault, now i must deal with a problem caused originally by apple. When I DJ with my 2009 model, no problems. My thought process is that maybe because the original screen is not on the unit, the replacement may not be as sturdy because it wasnt built with the unit itself. For example, my 09 mbp has had no replairs and its fine. The models in the store i assume have had no display repairs, and theyre all fine. The manager agreed that my hinge was weaker than the rest of the stores' models, but even though it was weaker it was within "normal specs", and he wouldnt budge. I'm sure a new unit that has been built together will fix this problem, but he would not give me a new unit. Is there ANYTHING I can do to help this? I am going to a different apple store tomorrow and hope the manager is a bit more understanding in the fact that not all apple computers are put through "normal" use and therefore should not be judged with "normal" specs. When my computer was new it NEVER ever ever did this, and I feel like I bought applecare for that exact reason, so that for at least 3 year i have the computer I bought. Any any any help would be greatly appreciated, I am 19 going and paying my way through school and if i didnt have to pay for school I would just say screw it and I would buy another unit, but i cant. Thanks for reading this, i really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, spoke way to early.  The fan issue is still a big problem.  From the second the machine is turned on, the fan cranks up.  Frankly, I think this is overheating the machine to some extent (running the fan at max speeds when it's not even warm).  Additionally, the noise caused by this has only gotten worse, and now it is even making a "whistling sound."  Looks like I'm going to be making the trek to the Genious Bar, but based on comments by others on this issue I am not optimistic about a fix.

  • Macbook Pro with a hinge problem

My Macbook Pro have a little fissures on the plastic hinge. The warranty cover this?

    P.S. Sorry, I don't speak english very well 'cause i'm Spanish :P

You think the warranty doesn't cover this flaw? Is expensive repair the hinge?
    Thanks for you help.

  • Macbook pro the plastic hinge cover making a creaking noise.

I just resently brought the macbook pro about a week ago and now it is making a creaking noise
coming from the hinge whenever I close the lid. Should bring it back for a repair or is it not big of a deal.

I've since figured out that it has to do with the back cover... For those of you qith squeaky hinges- have you removed the back cover at some point?  I found my cover was not on perfectly-straight for the screws... Line the holes up very carefully... In any case, if you have squaking, remove the three long screws from the back cover, and like magic, where'd the creaking go!?

  • Macbook Pro (Mid 2010) Hinge Issue

    Hi Guys,
I bought my first Mac back in May and it was the MBP released in April the 13inch model. I noticed some odd creaking noise coming from the hinge and occasionally (not always) when i close the laptop I also hear the odd noise. Upon closer inspection, it is coming from the right side of the black hinge and if you gently touch it, not only does it make the noise in question.. it gives way and doesnt seem to be as tight as left side of the hinge. I know to some this isn't an issue to be worried about, but for a 3-4month old laptop, its kind of irritating. If I took it to the genius bar would they fix this under warranty? Will they have to send it out? And how long would it take if I do? Also, is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Luckily it isnt that loud popping noise I've heard from other MBs hinges, but Im also concerned this may evolve into something of that nature.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If I took it to the genius bar would they fix this under warranty?
Depends on whether they think there are other signs of collision or being dropped.
Depends on if the hinge does not open or close the normal amount.
Note if you overstretch the hinge, that can not only damage the hinge but the signal to the display.
Will they have to send it out?
Only if the tools are not available at their store to fix it.
And how long would it take if I do?
Ask them. Depending on the store it can be anywhere from 36 hours to 3 weeks. Many will quote you if they can't get it repaired in three weeks, or less that they will replace it free. Backup your data regardless before bringing it in*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Luckily it isnt that loud popping noise I've heard from other MBs hinges, but Im also concerned this may evolve into something of that nature.
Some sounds are normal, some are from abuse, and very few would be from a serious malfunction. A more telltale sign of malfunction is display artifacts appearing on base erase and installed system with no devices hooked up to it, and even more so, if there is something mentioned in the hardware test that came with the system documented here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    Good luck!
This being a user to user board, we can't state exact stats about the above question, as people's mileage has varied.

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2008) Hinge Creaking

I was just wondering if anybody has this problem: the hinge on my new MBP (Late 2008) creaks occasionally when I open up the lid. I isolated the problem to be in the left side of the hinge. When I push on this area, it gives in a little and makes a creaking and popping noise. It's just on the left side, and nowhere else in the hinge. It's just a small, maybe inch wide area.

Thanks for posting! I am experiencing this as well (same location). I tried removing the aluminum cover on the bottom and then putting it back in place, but it stopped the creaking for only a little while. I noticed the battery creaks when you push it gently on the left side. It's rather annoying, since every time I move my left hand on the computer's rest area there is a noise.

  • Macbook Pro cracking sound on Vista x86

    Hello,
In run Mac OS X 10.5.6 and Vista Business x86 via Bootcamp. However, the sound output while running Vista is cracking and slightly hissing every ~20 seconds.
Does anybody know the correct sound settings of the internal sound card (e.g. 24-Bit/48000HZ) is? Or is it just an unresolved sound driver issue?
    Greetings
    Thomas

I just found out that the sound chip is a Realtek ALC885.
    Chip Specs here:
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=28&Level=5&Co nn=4&ProdID=138
Regarding the sound sound settings, there is a Realtek Audio Manager accessible through Start>Control Panel>Realtek HD Audio Manager.
What worked for me, was, I set the Default Format in Start>Control Panel>Sound>Speaker Properties>Default Format to the same setting as in the Realtek Audio Manager and I also deactivated the "Exclusive Mode" in said window.
    Greetings

  • The plastic hinge between my screen and the computer (macbook pro retina) is cracked and doesn't hold the screen anymore? Can Apple change it?

The hinge between my screen and my computer (macbook pro retina) has cracked and doesn't hold the screen anymore. Can I fix it without changing my screen. And if it's still on guarantee does Apple have to repair it?

Apple can fix any and all of their computers.  Whether it would be charged to you would be the question.   Do you have AppleCare?
Accidental damage is not covered by AppleCare.
    How old is this computer?

  • Late 2008-09 MacBook Pro Broken Hinge

This machine has been about as babied as a machine can be yet this week the hinge has started breaking in a corner until it's broken completey. It's so obvious that there is some glue failure. You can see it. It's like brittle ""Gorilla Glue". I took it in this monring to an Apple authorized dealer who quoted me about $600-700 for the repair, then I called Apple support and they basically said the same thing. I have aready had almost every internal drive, cable and board replaced, some TWICE due to defects (thankfully I was still under AC. My patience has grown thin.
On known design flaw issues like this, and it IS known, is there any recourse to get Apple to repair this? We have 6 Apple laptops in my family and we use them exclusively in our business, but this is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth (along with having to buy new powercords every freaking six months because the insulation breaks around the wiring).
Did I mention my patience is growing thin? My love for Apple is rapidly waning.

I have gone through the exact same problem and Apple wants me to pay MORE money for their defect...
my patience is not wearing thin... it is gone...
i bought it refurb, and as soon as i got it the track pad was messed up so i took it to an authorized seller/repair place in my town and nope... their repair was useless. i took it back again and Apple finally approved a total replacement.
so... fast forward to several months ago and the display begins creaking and making cracking sounds as i close it and getting very tight. then it finally separates from the back lid... and it got so bad i could see the insides of the display and the cheap-looking glue inside.
well, Apple wants a minimum of $310 but will probably ask for more (as i have seen estimates up in the $600 range)... but considering i spent almost $1,800 for it, and in less than 2 years it has a defect that should obviously be a recall/replacement.
all anyone has to do is go to google and type "macbook pro hinge" and they will get pages and pages... and pages of results of people all dealing with the same issue.
i've had apple's since the Apple //e, and normally Apple has the best customer service, but asking customers to pay for THEIR defective product is a huge slap in the face.
frustrated and not a happy apple customer...
my anxiety waiting for them to give me the final bill has been increasing over time... this should be comped 100%

  • What is the cracking sound when I open my MacBook Pro lid?

When opening and closing MacBook Pro lid, it makes a cracking sound. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? It's not the hard drive because Geek Squad ran a test and everything passed.

Try this:  Loosen the screws in the rear of the MBP (by the hinge) and re-torque them.  See if that will alleviate the problem. You will need a 00 Philips driver.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro Lid Making Very Loud Cracking Noises

I recently got my Macbook Pro 13" screen replaced for a pixel defect. When I opened and closed my lid, the lid moved smoothly from either position.
Now, it feels as if the lid has more resistance when I operate it. Worst of all, when it is at a 90 degree angle and I slowly retract it, the lid makes a very loud "crack" from the hinge. Could it be that the lid's screws are in too tightly?

  • MacBook Pro Lower Case cracks.

Since I opened my MacBook Pro without Retina-Display 2012, the Lower Case cracks, if I press the upper and lower Case together.
What can I do to solve this problem?
Should I solve the screws a bit or should I thighten those screws?
    Thanks!

A new Mac is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.
You may have to take the computer to the Apple store or Apple Authorized  Service Provider
to get it fixed under warranty.
    Best.
