Macbook Pro Crash during Update Installation

Hello All,
I currently have a 15-inch early 2011 model macbook pro that is not functioning as it should be. For the past few weeks my mac has randomly shut off and given me the message "Your Computer Restarted Because of a Problem." With that said I began to take note as to when this was occuring and realized that anytime I tried to install new software or updates it would immediately shut the computer down after starting the install process. When I tried to install updates on my computer in an effort to combat the issue it would simply shut down during that install process as well.
Below is my most recent Panic Log:
Tue Mar 26 18:53:25 2013

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My New Retina MacBook Pro crashes during installation and cannot turn back on?

My New Retina Display MacBook Pro suddenly just crash all of a sudden during installation, it happened when in a white background ther is a Lion image at the center and a progress bar at the bottom. The MacBook cannot be turned back on after this crash!!!! Does anyone has the same problem?
P.S. I had connected to a power cable during installation and didn't touch it at all during installation.

Similar problem here. Using the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display, happily for a week. Tonight it suddenly died, turned itself off, that is. I couldn't turn it back on now.... Very frustrating. Any solution except for bringing it back to the Apple store?

  • MacBook Pro crashes during 10.9.4 update

Three times now I have tried to update my MacBook Pro (mid 2009) and each time it has failed.  I downloaded the combo updater and it runs just fine to start.  Then, after the restart, the updating screen appears and never advances past "11 minutes left..."    No matter how long I wait, no progress.
The first time that this happened, the mouse actually froze in place.  The second two times, the mouse was useable but nothing else.
In each case I did a hard shutdown and then rebooted, back into 10.9.3, where everything seems OK.
I have done a disk permissions repair but with no help.
    Any ideas?

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • MacBook Pro Froze During Windows Installation

I am running Mavericks lastest update on mid-2012 MacBook Pro.  I was installing Windows and following the directions provided in the Apple Support Communities.........the MacBook froze during the installation of Windows after I answered the prompt about the size of the partition........800 GhB for Mac and 200GhB for Windows 7.  I now have a blank grey screen on the MacBook.  I get the Apple boot-up when I press the Power up button but nothing happens.
How can I reboot and start the installation over?
    Thanks very much.

Correction:  I get the Apple boot-up sound when I press the Power button but nothing then happens other than the same grey screen.

  • Trouble downloading Snow Leopard sw updates- system crashes during update installs. I'm only trying to get to the AppStore to download

I've upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard... fine.
Installing the system updates (the AppStore isn't in the Snow Leopard install, just available via a system update)
The updates appear to have downloaded ok, then the system restarts to install, and .... CRASH. All's I'm trying to do is legally get to Lion.
I have a 15" Macbook Pro, 2gb ram, dual core Intel, 120gb drive.
Should I re-install Snow Leopard, or anyone have any good ideas?  I suppose it could even be a hardware problem of some sort, but the system seeems stable unless I try to do the sw updates.
    Please help!
    Thanks all!

dual core Intel   /    All's I'm trying to do is legally get to Lion.
    Lion requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
From here > Apple - OS X Lion - Technical specifications
Click your Apple icon top left corner of your screen then from the drop down menu click: About This Mac
If it doesn't say:  Intel Core 2 Duo
Then you can't upgrade the Mac to Lion.

  • Macbook pro crashes when updating firmware for focusrite saffire audio controller

    Can anyone help?
I have a MacBook Pro on os x 10.6.8 that keeps crashing completely when I try to update the firmware on a firewire Focusrite Saffire audio controller.
Everything freezes and I get a message that says I need to hold the power button down to shut down the MacBook.
When I restart I am given a Panic Report message that asks if I want to submit it to Apple.
I don't know if it's related but the MacBook crashed a few times recently and stopped responding whilst there were some grunting noises coming from the hard drive???
Any ideas what should I do?
    Thanks, Ben.

Thanks sig, I've contacted the manufacturer and will await their reply.
Good idea though to get the firmware updated on another computer.
Sometimes you just can't see the wood for the trees eh? ;)
Any ideas on the soft crashes with hard drive noises?
    Thanks again, Ben.

  • Macbook pro crashing during dynamic switching. early 2011

    Hello.
I also have a Macbook Pro (Early 2011, i7, AMD 6750M) that keeps crashing to various screens (black, grey, sometimes restart) during dynamic switching to the discrete graphics card or while using the discrete graphics card.
I have read about several people in my situatuion and I also know that apple has released a statement regarding this issue with late 2010 models.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
The thing is that my computer is a early 2011 and seeing as its basically the same issue, i dont know if that also applies to me.
Alot of people blame the fault on the graphics cards depleating because of heat, and to be honest that makes sense to me. Ever since I have had the computer I have been forced to run fans on close to max rpm whenever the discrete card is in use.
A quick fix would be to run on the integraded card alone, but thats quite frankly not an option. I bought a Macbook Pro to edit images/video, Adobe design suite etc and neither of these things work at all as well as they should (or at all) on the integraded card.
I know that the whole logic board might need replacing, and I really dont want to fork over close to 1000 bucks to get it fixed.
    Is there any hope?
    Thanks

I have been everywhere to try to get this resolved.  I have also been told I have to pay over £400 (GBP) for a logic board replacement that I have read fails within months far more times than I can recall. I emailed Tim Cook and I got a phone call from a very nice apple rep yesterday who's job is to call people like me and you, then try to sound friendly and understanding, but basically confirm there's nothing apple are prepared to do. I have bought more macs than I can remember, I have persuaded many friends and all my family to 'go mac'. Never again!! I couldn't be more disgusted with the brand I once loved with a passion.
The apple rep said this problem is 'just emerging' to apple . . .  everyone who is on this thread should actually get the problem recorded with apple, so they can basically prove to themselves how massively they messed up with the 2011 macbooks, then probably do nothing. If you are reading this then email your repair case number and mac serial number to Tim Cook.  I myself have decided to ensure all my friends in the media get word of this in the hope they can find a story in it.  Its my ambition to get this story covered with the BBC before Christmas. The only way apple are going to consider a replacement program is if they are forced due to very honest publicity. As the size of this thread proves . . they couldn't care less about our very common issue, its time to make it an issue for apple!

  • MacBook Pro crashes during sleep

    Hi folks,
I have a MacBook Pro C2D 2.33ghz. For the last few months, I've been experiencing an issue in which I walk away from the computer, it goes to sleep, I come back, and it won't wake up -- I have to hold down the power button to turn the machine off and back on to get it to come back.
The only thing that changed since this started happening was that I replaced the external display I was using -- an Apple Cinema Display 20" -- with a Dell 3007WFP-HC. I can't imagine why that would be causing this, though. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Martin

easy to find out about the display. Set the sleep timeout to something short and disconnect the Dell. Let it fall asleep a few time and see what happens. If all is OK reconnect the Dell and do exactly the same tests (ie same amount of sleep).
do you by any chance still have the old display? try the test with that if you can.

  • Macbook pro crashes since the update!!!!!

Since I updated the OS, my macbook has been crashing consistently. its to the point that I can't even be on it a long time because it just crashes out. And the problems began with the update. In fact the first crash even on my macbook pro was during the install of the update. So if anyone figures out how to block or get rid of this stupid useless app store please help. And if you have not updated, DONT!!! save yourself!!!

    Hi,
Just drag the Mac App Store icon off the Dock. It will go "poof" ...
If you decide to reinstall the Mac App Store from the v10.6.6 combo update available here.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349, it may be a good idea to check the startup disk first.
Go to your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the FirstAid tab. Click: Verify Disk.
If Disk Utility reports problems, you will need to boot from your install disc to make repairs, instructions
    here.

my macbook pro crashes after a few minutes of playing a game or using photoshop? i just got it fixed motherboard. do i have to do an update?

There are no updates currently available beyond v10.8.4 for Mountain Lion.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
If that doesn't help, the startup disk may need repairing.
Turn the Mac off, wait about ten seconds then startup while holding down the Command + R keys. Let go of the keys when you see the spinning progress indicator.
From there you should be able to access the utilities in recovery mode to verify and repair the disk if necesssary, or reinstal OS.
Read before proceeding > OS X: About OS X Recovery

  • MacBook Pro crashes when connecting via external modem

My new MacBook Pro crashes when I try to connect to the Internet via an external modem. Is it a SW or HW problem? In the latter case might it by the computer or the modem (original).
    Sarah
    MacBook Pro 1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This is Bob Simpson again from Paris. I followed the advice given in this forum and took out the set of HP printer drivers from the drivers pre-installled in my MacBook Pro and put them on my desktop. After that, the modem worked perfectly. If I want to use my HP Laserjet 1200 printer, I plug it into a USB port on the computer, the computer recognizes it and prints. If I want to use the modem again, I have to take that printer out of my list of printers in the print center. This is a bit of a pain in the neck, but it works. No one at any of the Apple distributers or Apple Care centers was able to figure all this out. Our forum did the job and we should get free awards from Apple, like the installation of the update on all our computers that will settle this problem. Otherwise, my BMacBook pro works like a dream. Many thanks to all of you and jackplug, you don't have to throw away your printer.

  • My MacBook pro freezes during start up after 30 secs. Any ideas?

My MacBook pro freezes during startup while the logo is still showing and the moving circle stops after about 30 seconds. Any ideas please?

On my Mac that DSMOS message appears about 20 seconds into the boot process.  Booting finishes about 30 seconds after that.
Do those letters "v" really appear on the screen?
Unfortunately, if those are the last messages on the screen, I see nothing there that explains the hang.  The next message I see after the DSMOS message is one about an AirPort daemon, although I'm not sure I understand any connection there might be between that and your hang.
Since you don't have a system restore disc you won't be able to do the next thing I was going to suggest, which is to run the diagnostics that came with that Mac.  If you have an OS X 10.6 installation disc, you could try reinstalling OS X over the top of what's on it now.  Right after that finishes use Software Update to apply any missing OS X updates, or download and install the "combo" updater for the version of OS X 10.6 that you want.  If that Mac has a software problem doing that might help.

It downloads (very small file) and asks me to Restart or hit "Not Now". I click restart, the system reboots into a updating page where a status bar quickly completes. The laptop restarts again back to OSX. I open up the appstore and goto the updates page and what do I see? 1 available update: MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update 1.1, like I never did anything to begin with.
    My system info is:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro10,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.6 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP101.00EE.B02
      SMC Version (system):          2.3f32
      Serial Number (system):          xxx
      Hardware UUID: xxx
Please help this is really annoying.

I had the same problem. Tried all the proposed fixes. Nothing worked. This solved my problem:
    1. Install a fresh copy of mountain lion on an extern disk
    2. Startup from that disk
    3. Update to 10.8.3.
    4. Restart
    5. Open app store, go to updates. You should see the SMC 1.1. update.
    6. Click update
    7. Restart
Once the update installed (fan will go quickly to max speed during startup) switch back to your internal disk and start up. Now the SMC 1.1. update shouldn't show up in the app store/upadtes.
