MacBook Pro Crash on Start Up Relating to Airport???

Guys,
Really need some help
My Mac book pro crashes and Im out of ideas of what to do before a reinstall, this is the story....
I had left my mac book pro on, closed, so probalby on standby, I came back to it after many hours and it had crashed (it was up to date with all the updates). I tried to restart, it would auto-login and get to the start where it was loading an application, it would bounce once then hang.
I tried to boot in safe mode, and it would boot but had a very very dark screen for no reason, and I could not change the brightness - after playing around, resetting PVRAM .etc that problem seemed to go, so I followed the advice of the apple website.
I removed the program I thought was crashing it (not adobe version cue btw, i removed that ages ago). I have no items in my start up folder in library. Apple's guide says to remove start up items from the system start up was well, but as far as I can see they all look like apple system startup processes, so I leave them.
I removed all startup items from login, i have moved my font folder away. I repaired my keychain, I verified the disk, repaired some permissions, ran fsck, everything....
I then starded in single user mode, and told it to continue to boot in single user mode, got a very interesting problem.
It would say the line to initiate the airport with its mac address, then it would say, error connecting to X wireless, no password found, then give a line
Airport_Atrh: - ethernet address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
49) SystemStarter: tfp: failed 0
So i thought, perhaps some file is corrupt relating to the password connecting to the wireless, which starts automatically on airport and connection to the wireless.
I noticed on the crash too, like other users report, the time, the airport symbol, none of them are in the corner of the screen - this would suggest a problem with airport crashing before it loads all the things in the corner, i think.
So, I followed apples guide to reset your network settings:
# Selecting the "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications" option in Network preferences can sometimes cause this issue. You'll need to delete the preference file that holds this setting. This is an advanced step that will reset all of your computer's network settings. You will need to reconfigure them in Network preferences to reconnect to the Internet or a network.
1. Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
2. Type: mount -uw /
3. Press Return.
4. Type one of the following:
(for Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier)
mv /var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml preferences.old
(for Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.9)
mv /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist preferences.old
Tip: There is a space between ".plist" and "preferences.old".
5. Press Return.
6. Type: reboot
7. Press Return.
# If your computer still starts up to a blue screen, follow these steps.
1. Start up the computer in Single-User Mode.
2. Type: mount -uw /
3. Press Return.
4. Type:
mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist preferences2.old
Tip: There is a space between ".plist" and "preferences".
5. Press Return.
6. Type:
mv /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist preferences3.old
7. Press Return.
8. Type: reboot
9. Press Return.
And this still didn't fix it.. All this did was make it crash earlier. It now doesnt try to connect to X wireless because the settings have been reset, but still crashes with the same line as above, airport_athr, then system starter failed on 0.
It would make sense that I can get into safe mode since airport is disabled in safe mode, and it makes sense that if the airport is the problem, then before it was crashing before loading the other top bar icons / symbols like bluetooth, the time .etc
Please - can anyone help? is this a hardware fault or is there something I can do to repair airport??
Regards
Jonathan

Thanks for your help, however I think this is a bit drastic
I reinstalled OSX, and now it boots - no idea if the problem will come back, but it looks like it was a software error at least, as airport now works and i can get on the internet - what do you think?

  • MacBook Pro has recently started to crash.

My MacBook Pro has recently started to crash. It sometimes crashes when watching streamed video (youtube/netflix), and will always crash when using high processor programs (e.g. final cut X, Logic Pro) and cannot run any games without crashing. Usually starts running hot before cutting to a blank screen (and any audio starts to loop), and requires a hard reboot.
    Any help would be apreciated.
below are the latest error report, and hardware copied from settings.

You probably have the issue addressed by that article.
Take the computer to Apple or an authorised repairer, tell them that you think it may be the problem mentioned, and they should run a simple pass/fail test.
The  service is only for three years after initial purchase, but several users here have reported getting free repairs even after that  limit, sometimes after contacting Apple customer relations, pr speaking to an Apple store manager.

  • TS3423 17" macbook pro won't start blue file with question mark is all that appears on the screen

My old macbook pro will not start up. Worked fine yesterday, today all I gat is the startup sound and a blank blue screen. After a while the screen shows a file folder icon with a question mark in it. Any ideas

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. 2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

We'll need to know more to beable to help. Do you want to try to restore your photos from your iPhone to your Mac, or try to recover the photos from the old iPhoto Library on your Mac?
What is the situation of your Mac now? In hat way did it crash? A hardware problem with the drive? Does the system not start properly? Does iPhoto not launch? Do you still have the iPhoto Library on your mac or a backup, so we could try to rescue the photos there?
What versions of iPhoto are on your iPhone and your Mac?
however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?
On the iPhone you cannot access the "package contents" - IOS hides the file system from the users. To restore photos from your phone share all iPhoto photos to your Camera Roll, that are not already in the Camera Roll,  and then connect the iPhone via USB and import the Camera Roll to iPhoto or Image Capture. Or use any of the other sharing methods described on thos manual page: see:  Ways to share photos http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnk7d8f763e
To retrieve photos from a corruptrd iPhoto Library on your Mac we need to know the version number and more about the "crash" you experienced, the state of your mac, the system, the data. Please post back with more details.

  • While running on battery, MacBook Pro crashes after a few minutes of use.

While running on battery, my MacBook Pro crashes (shuts down) after a few minutes (less than 10) of use. Battery indicator still says I have enough power (more than 75%) so it can't be related to the other reported issues with low battery crashes.
While on power adaptor, I don't have any issues.
I checked battery condition as suggested in all the forum threads I can find and its fine.
    Running Lion 10.7.2

PRAM reset did not resolve the issue

  • My macbook pro crashes constantly

    Okay, so here's the deal:
My macbook pro crashes constantly and it seems to be getting worse.
    It's a macbook pro mid 2010 purchase with a 2.66 i7 4gigs ddr3 288mb intel hd graphics running OS X 10.8.5.
The problem occurs in numerous different circumstances. In every case it will cause the screep to go black, crash, restart itself, and give me a message saying it restarted due to an error. After that it will be, seemingly, fine, until I run into another of the myriad instances when it will crash. It's very easy to duplicate so if posting the error message will help I can definitely do that. Here is a list of occasions that the crash currently occurs:
About 20 seconds after opening photobooth.
Sometimes, but not always, after opening iPhoto.
Netflix, whenever I try to watch something instantly.
Trying to update to OS X Maverick.
Certain types of ads on sites that use video seem cause it.
Tried to install Starcraft 2 one time and it doesn't seem to like that either.
Firefox likes to crash about twice as frequently as Safari for some reason.
Honestly, there are probably others, but I just avoid certain programs now because it's such a pain.

Here's one. There's a 3 year time limit? This has only started occuring within the last 7 - 8 months.

Macbook Pro won't start properly... keeps restarting without chime!
Late 2007 Macbook pro.  OS upgrade worked great for me.
I have had this problem on and off for a month or so.  I simply cannot figure out what the issue is.  I have tried poerup with and without AC power and with/without battery installed.
Starting in Safe mode does not help.
Trying to start with a disk does not help.
It sort of seems like it might be an internal power issue or GPU issue.
It also feels sort of like a software compatibility issue since my Macbook Pro gets reallly slugish for no apparent reason sometimes and IU have to restart.
I have three different anti-virus programs so I doubt it is a virus issue.
I noticed all this start after I did a Mountain Lion upgrade and then tried to start up VMware Fusion.  Fusion seemed to just bog down the computer horribly but did not cause a system crash.
I need to edit an important sequence on Final Cut Pro and don't want it to freeze me out!
Anyone who has had this problem and resolved it please let me know
    God bless

Systematically run through this list of fixes.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If it doesnt chine it doesn't mean much, the mute could be on or you installed a anti-chime software.

My MacBook Pro, does not start after pushing start button. The side bar starts and stops at half way.

    Hy myneck,
Happy Holidays!  The resource below may provide some steps to try if your MacBook Pro won't start.
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1367
This article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on. To differentiate this from a display issue, be sure that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
There is no video on your built-in or external display
If your computer has power but doesn't display any video, it may have one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see a light from the Sleep LED (if your Mac has one).
Pressing the Caps Lock key on the keyboard causes it to light.
If any of these display-related conditions occur, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead. Otherwise, continue with this article.
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • Macbook Pro crashes on mouse click

    Hello everyone,
I've been having this problem for two weeks now and it's happening more and more frequently!
    Info:
    Macbook Pro 15'' mid 2011
Mac OS X Mavericks / Mac OS X Yosemite
Hard Drive: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD
    8 GB Ram
    THE ISSUE:
Every so often at a random time, at the exact moment I perform a mouse click, my macbook pro crashes.
That instant, the screen goes dark ( like I just ripped out it's battery ) and reboots automatically, saying "your mac restarted because of a problem".
Like I said, it's gotten more and more frequent! ( 5 times a day or more now... )
    WHAT I'VE TRIED:
So the problem occurred in Mavericks, so I figured I'll install Yosemite ( on a new partition ) and see if it's any better.. Well it isn't...
Same problem, same type of crash.
Then I figured maybe it's related to my magic mouse.. So i turned it off and used a third party mouse. No luck! It also happened while using the Macbook's trackpad.
I also haven't found anyone with a similar problem online so far, so if any of you have experienced something like this or know what might be causing it, i'd be grateful for any information!
    Best regards,
    Robert

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • Macbook Pro crashes and needs reboot 10.8.1

    Hi all,
Having an odd issue. Since upgrading to OS X 10.8 and now running 10.8.1 my MacBook Pro crashes intermitently. The operating system becomes unresponsive and the only thing I can do is move the mouse and nothing else. The only solution is to hold the power button down.
I did have a few kernal panics before upgrading to 10.8.1. Not had one for a while now.
I have run an Apple Hardware Test and I have run a Memtest and everything has reported no issues.
I have looked at the Console logs but can't see anything obvious (not really sure what to look for). Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
    THanks in advance.
    Tom

  • MacBook Pro Failed to Start Up

    Hi all, some advice required.
Last night my 2006 MacBook Pro did not start up. It hung on the grey apple logo then went to a black screen and kept trying to start. A message gradually counted down from 10 attempts to one and then the start process stopped to a simple cursor. There was some message about "throttling too quickly".
Following advice from a friend I reset the P-RAM and although the next start got beyond the grey apple logo, it hung on a blue screen. I then reset the SMC and the computer started just fine. It now appears ok.
    Some History:
I used to have boot camp running Windows XP. When I started to run short of hard drive space I removed this. Ever since then, on start-up a brief question mark "?" appears instead of the apple logo. It is only for a moment. I read that this means something can be wrong with the start up process? Also when I install the firmware updates periodically from apple when the computer is required to be restarted it "hangs" on the grey apple logo and has to be shut down and restarted a second time in order to boot up properly. Two weeks ago my optical drive failed. It makes no sound on start up and will not accept a disk. When you go to "About this Mac" the computer says it has no optical drive installed. Could this problem be related?
Is my MacBook Pro on the way out? It will be four years old in January and has been used pretty heavily since I got it. I wanted to upgrade the RAM and install Leopard rather then spend all the money on a new one. Is this a waste if it's about to die?
That's a lot of info I know, many thanks in advace for your advice.
    David

Boot into your Recovery partition (if you can) by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there elect to resinatll the OS (you may need your Apple ID and password for this). You'll not erase any data, etc., by installing a fresh OS.
Once your OS install is complete, you can restart and go through the update process again, this time remembering not to unplug from mains while the updates are installing.

  • I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • Hi! My MacBook Pro won't start! HELP !!!

Hi! My MacBook Pro won't start! I have tried everything I can think of like Safe Mode (doesn't work), Recovery (does not find Recovery Drive), Booting with OS Snow Leopard Cd (doesn't work)...
I have really no clue about what to do now... I paid quite a lot of money for this computer and am pretty short of money nowadays! Would like to repair with help rather than having to take it to Apple Store.
Has anyone had this same problem?
All I get is white screen + grey Apple and spinning grey disk...  it's 100% frustrating! Any help would be more than welcome since I think i've tried EVERY SUGGESTION on this Support Center and Youtube videos...
This MBP is from 2011, runs on OS X 10.6.8
I tried booting with OS X Snow Leopard CD, it didn't work!  (my cd player works! recognizes the Snow Leopard CD, but then never opens it... goes back forever to the with screen + apple and spinning disk)
I don't care about the content, it's OK if i lose all DATA... I just want to bring this Mac BACK TO LIFE!
When i run coomand on root# fsck -fy  --> RESULT = my HD was checked and seems to be FINE!
    Thanks
