Macbook pro crashes when updating firmware for focusrite saffire audio controller
Can anyone help?
I have a MacBook Pro on os x 10.6.8 that keeps crashing completely when I try to update the firmware on a firewire Focusrite Saffire audio controller.
Everything freezes and I get a message that says I need to hold the power button down to shut down the MacBook.
When I restart I am given a Panic Report message that asks if I want to submit it to Apple.
I don't know if it's related but the MacBook crashed a few times recently and stopped responding whilst there were some grunting noises coming from the hard drive???
Any ideas what should I do?
Thanks, Ben.
Thanks sig, I've contacted the manufacturer and will await their reply.
Good idea though to get the firmware updated on another computer.
Sometimes you just can't see the wood for the trees eh? ;)
Any ideas on the soft crashes with hard drive noises?
Thanks again, Ben.

My MacBook Pro has an update available for Maverick I think it was
My MacBook Pro had an update available for the Maverick and I did not hit the update because kept erroring out. I was updating other things and decided to hit it too and that time finally updated. Then right after the laptop looked for updates and did another one. It asked to install whatever the upstate on the OS or X was and then took 50 minutes to install it then more time to complete it. When computer finally came back on it asked for my apple ID for iCloud. I typed it in several times correct fly but it would not take it and finally chose forgot. It went to a new blank box with the asterisk wheel winding around and choice of continue highlighted below next to un highlighted back. Now I am frozen here and can't do anything with laptop. Will not allow me to highlight and choose back. Can't get it to continue. Tried esc. Tried force close and tells me I must quit setup assistant first. Can't get top controls to show up. Finally got a second desktop background to come up and pushed F 3 and tried to use buttons below and above and will pull-up things like Safari but can't use it and can't pull up the set up assistant this way to choose quit either. So I am just stuck. Help please, anyone. How do I get use of my laptop again??
I don't really know if it is maverick or what number OS it is. Just know had picture of mountain lion. That sounds like you have installed Mavericks over the top of Mountain Lion?
Do you know what version of the OS was on the laptop before you started?
Do you have any backups from before the 'update', either a Time Machine disk or a full copy (a.k.a. bootable clone)?
Mavericks is not a simple update, despite Apple's constant nagging to 'update' to it. It's possible that the Mavericks installer has overwritten the old OS, but I suspect it may simply need you to create a user account with the setup assistant. It's a very good idea to make a full backup before applying any major OS upgrade.
I would reboot, fill out the details for setup assistant and when it is time to enter the user details enter a new account name (this will be your admin account). The assistant should then create a user account that you can login with to look at the contents of the Mac's disk.
Then you should open the /Users folder (Use 'Finder menu > Go > Go to folder…' to open /Users) & see if the old users home folders are still intact. You may also want to see if any third party Applications are still installed.
If the old data is intact, and the account isn't listed in 'System Preferences > Users & groups' it can be recreated, provided you make sure to use the same 'shortname' as the Users home folder.
If the data is gone, I'm afraid it's possible that it is lost, I can't see this being likley because the 10.9 installer will not delete user data without some stern warnings & advanced user interaction.
An alternative would be to connect this Mac to another Mac & look at the disk to see if the data is still there before you create the user acount. Do you have access to another Mac? You may be able to use Thunderbolt or Firewire to see this Mac's disk on another working Mac.

MacBook Pro crashes when connecting via external modem
My new MacBook Pro crashes when I try to connect to the Internet via an external modem. Is it a SW or HW problem? In the latter case might it by the computer or the modem (original).

MacBook Pro 1,1 Mac OS X (10.4.6)This is Bob Simpson again from Paris. I followed the advice given in this forum and took out the set of HP printer drivers from the drivers pre-installled in my MacBook Pro and put them on my desktop. After that, the modem worked perfectly. If I want to use my HP Laserjet 1200 printer, I plug it into a USB port on the computer, the computer recognizes it and prints. If I want to use the modem again, I have to take that printer out of my list of printers in the print center. This is a bit of a pain in the neck, but it works. No one at any of the Apple distributers or Apple Care centers was able to figure all this out. Our forum did the job and we should get free awards from Apple, like the installation of the update on all our computers that will settle this problem. Otherwise, my BMacBook pro works like a dream. Many thanks to all of you and jackplug, you don't have to throw away your printer.

Macbook Pro crashes when running on battery
Hi.
My Macbook Pro crashes when running in battery. It seems it doesn't happen when connected to the power.
Is there any way to know if it's a battery malfunction?
Because Apple changed the motherboard a month ago or so because Nvidia broke. So it could be also the connector to the battery?
Is there any tests I can run?
ThanksI would take it back to Apple and have them check it. You may have got a replacement logic board with a problem. Apple usually use rebuilt ones.

MacBook Pro crashing when I touch trackpad.
My MacBook Pro crashes sometimes 10 times in a day and other times not for a few days at a time. It only does this when I touch the track pad, however, it seems totally random. I can use the track pad quite a bit and it is fine - then I go to use it and it crashes.
upgraded to the 10.9.2 OSX and made the problem worse. Apple store has been about useless. I have replaced my hard drive and done a fresh install of 10.9.2 but nothing has changed.
Can anyone help me with solving this problem?John,
When I had the older OSX I had to hold the power button down and power the machine down and then hold power button again to get it running. With 10.9.2 it reboots itself and brings back everything I was working on when it crashed.
Yes, the report problem window comes up and I have send all of them to apple... dozens and dozens of them. I also shared them with the genius bar people at apple stores... who aren't so genius...
I will work to determine of the proplems occur in safe mode as well but have no tested that to date.
Following is the error message that occured on my last crash... which was the 4th one today (but I deleted the IP address for the wireless card):

MacBook Pro crashes when closing lid while in windows 8.1
I use a late-2011 MacBook Pro with Mavericks for work and run Windows 8.1 as my daily driver via Boot Camp. I've been running this setup for about a month without incident, but within the past week whenever I close the laptop it starts acting really weird. Normally it has alway just gone into sleep mode with the white LED on the front of the base pulsing slowly, and when I open it back up (even after a day or two) it snaps right back to action.
When I got home from work one day about a week ago I noticed that the computer was completely turned off, and when I booted it back up it went to OSX (I have it set to boot into Windows by default). I didn't initially think anything of it, but I soon realized that every time I closed the lid it was crashing. After closer examination I saw that the white LED wasn't flashing after closing the lid and that I could hear the fans still running. Oddly enough everytime I open it immediately after seeing this occur, the LED starts blinking when the lid is open yet the screen is black, the computer is unresponsive, and yet the fans are still humming. Eventually the computer just turns itself off completely. I've tested the same sequence of events while in OSX, yet everything works as it should: the LED illuminates immediately after closing the lid and the computer is fully operational the moment I open the lid.
I haven't made any major changes or performed any sort of updates since setting everything up initially, so I'm completely baffled as to why this is occuring. I've tried to reinstall/repair the Boot Camp drivers while in Windows, but to no avail. I'm at a total loss... I defintely am hoping to avoid having to wipe my fully configured windows installation and starting from scratch. Has anyone experienced anything like this and hopefully have any suggestions? Thanks!I would be looking at the Quad core MBP for Parallels. A Quad-core vs Dual-Core is not a fair comparison.
For the same CPU, the two bottlenecks for Parallels are RAM and disk speed.
You will see an improvement if you max out the RAM and the disk speed. The SSD in the MBP will be much faster than the HDD in the iMac. -
Macbook Pro Crash during Update Installation
Hello All,
I currently have a 15-inch early 2011 model macbook pro that is not functioning as it should be. For the past few weeks my mac has randomly shut off and given me the message "Your Computer Restarted Because of a Problem." With that said I began to take note as to when this was occuring and realized that anytime I tried to install new software or updates it would immediately shut the computer down after starting the install process. When I tried to install updates on my computer in an effort to combat the issue it would simply shut down during that install process as well.
Below is my most recent Panic Log:

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Why does iTunes on my Macbook Pro crash when I plug in my iPod Nano or Classic to sync?
When I plug my iPod Nano or Classic into my MacBook Pro, with iTunes already open, it crashes iTunes. Plus, the device doesn't show up in the device column on the left, but on the upper right of the desktop.
Hi monicaxh1,
Here is an article of troubleshooting for when your iPod does not appear in iTunes:

The issues you are seeing may be connected, so I would try this troubleshooting first.

Why does my macbook pro crash when I connect my external hard drive?
When I connect my external hard drive to my macbook pro (with fire wire) it crashes my computer... Any thoughts or help??
Thanks for the response. I tried both methods with the same end result.
I'm in safe mode now. It doesnt show up as being plugged in. It worked fine when connected with the USB-I went to disk utilities and repaired the disk.
I tried to plug in with the firewire, again and it shut down my computer..
Any other suggestions? -
My Macbook Pro crashes when I plug in m-audio fast track ultra
Hey Friends
I want to know if anyone of you who use a m-audio audio interface has the problem of your computer crashing, then having to restart, when you plug it into the usb drive. It started happening to me when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and is still doing it on Maverick. I've placed the error report below since I don't understand it, to see if someone could help me figure out why.
Thanks

2009 MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard crashes when operating on battery only. Works fine when plugged in. The battery holds a charge as indicated by the battery monitor in the menu bar and the green lights on the side.
Is this a hardware issue/battery issue/software issue??
Thanks!Hi s,
Sounds like battery. Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware > Power and see what it says for batt condition and also cycles. -
Macbook Pro Crashes When Viewing Video
My 2008 Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz crashes frequently when using video, such as YouTube or video on iPhoto. The screen instantly goes black and a hard button restart is required each time. I can't find anything in console logs which could help me identify the problem. After doing a hardware test and not finding anything I zeroed the hard drive and reinstalled 10.6.8 and only a minimum of applications - MS Office 2008, Flip4Mac WMV and iLife '11. Still the problem continues.
Do you think it's the video card (GeForce 8600M GT) or likely some other problem?Hi there, I have the same problem as you guys, everything was fine before iTunes 7.6 or iTunes 7.6.1 I tried both, before those updates I could watch any video in iTunes without any issue, after that when I play a video, a random video my Macbook freeze totally, sometimes comes alive but 90% of the cases I have to make a hard shutdown (press and hold the power button). I can't believe this kind of bugs in a software that is so mature. Help please!

MacBook Pro Crashes when quitting Quicktime
My MacBook pro completely crashes and makes me reboot anytime I quit Quicktime after having the application open for more than an hour or so. For me, this is almost daily. It's a huge pain in the ***, and only happens when I attempt to quit (Command+Q) Quicktime.
Any suggestions on how to fix this, as it happens almost daily for me.
ThanksHere's the latest error report. I intentionally opened Quicktime for more than an hour, and predictably, it crashed my entire laptop when I tried to quit...
