Macbook Pro Crashes Whenever I tranfer iPhoto Library to External HDD

I have a 1 month old Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2 and I am trying to back up my iPhoto library (about 52 GB file size) to an external HDD (Western Digital) and it always crashes my system and I am forced to restart.
The drive is a 2TB drive with 2 partitions. 500GB for Time Machine and 1.5 TB for general storage.
I have tried restarting the macbook, unplugging and replugging the drive in. I've repaired the general storage partition and none of that works.
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Adobe Lightroom on MacBook Pro does not see my "iphoto library"

    Hello.
The problem is that the iPhoto library is inside of iPhoto. Lightroom won't let you select it because it's basically a shortcut to iPhoto. Try exporting the images you need or all of them, depending on what you need.

  • Macbook pro won't connect with iphoto library

One of the reasons I upgraded to my new Macbook Pro in the first place is that iPhoto was hanging up or crashing on my old G5 tower, and now I can't seem to access my old iphoto library that I had backed up on my exteranl drive. More accurately, it can accesss one from 2007, but nothing more current. I'm currently running a 2.5 GHz Intel core i7 w/ 4GB 1333MHz DDr3 v 10.7.2. How do I get connected to the most current library, or at the very least get at all my photos past 2007, and will I still be able to bring in all my folders and albums et al?
    Thanks!

Iphoto 2 and 3 were the 'default' names iPhoto assigned to my libraries.
So I loaded iPhoto Library Manager, and it helped somewhat. I was not able to rebuild (said its XML file contained no image records...? ) or open the most current library, but I was at least able to extract the photos ( I think I have all of them). Is there any thing else I can try? I'm not relishing re- tagging/albuming all my pics since 2007..... Yoiks.
    Thanks for your help.

  • IPhoto crashes on opening after moving library to external HDD

    Hi
After filling my ibook up with phots to the point of bursting, I decided to buy an external harddrive and store the iPhoto library on it. This all seemed to work fine until I opened iPhoto (for the second time) and started importing photos from my camera. It kicked me out of iPhoto and now it will not reopen.
I have read all the advice on here and have followed the guidance. I have run the permissions programme, downloaded the library manager and run a rebuild. Everything.
I have put a copy of the backup onto the extrenal HDD and this opened fine the first time but not the second. I can get it to open by taking the library.photo from the backup and putting it in the library folders in the external HDD and this allows iPhoto to open for about 5 seconds before kicking me out. Next time I try and open it, I get kicked out immediately.
I had thought that the HDD might be read only but I changing that has made no difference, although I have my suspicions.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Lauchlan

Well first off, don't import an old library into a new one. You'll get massive duplication of photos as all the versions are treated a new photos. It's a mess.
What you need to do is recover your Original pics from the old library and put them into the new one.
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
So, find the old library on the HD and right-click on it. From the resulting menu choose 'Show Package Contents' and a finder window will open with the library exposed. You'll see the Originals folder. Drag it out and the from it drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
I think it unlikely that a permissions issue is the cause of the crashing, but it might be some damaged jpeg files. See how you get on with the above.

  • MacBook Pro crashed while deleting old backups off partitioned external hard drive. Now only recognizes windows formatted half of drive. Can the Apple side be saved?

    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
I have an external hard drive:
    2 TB Seagate Backup+Desk Media
    Partitioned:
    1TB - Windows NTFS
1TB - Mac (sorry I can't remember the formatting, whatever Mavricks asked me to use...)
    What happened:
I was erasing 3 old backups from the Apple partition and my laptop crashed part way through emptying the trash. (it has done this many times before, where parts of the screen are frozen in square blocks displaced all over the screen. Screenshot not possible unless I use a separate camera).
When I force restarted my computer (holding down the power button) neither side of the drive was accessible. After running the Disk Utility and Verifying and Repairing the Disk Permissions and the Disk Itself (for the Windows side) I was able to access the Windows partition. However, upon attempting to do so with the Mac partition it tells me that it cannot be repaired. I have found many forums discussing SIMILAR situations but none with the same and here is why:
Up until this happening I could access ONLY the Windows partition when the drive was connected to either my Apple laptop in Bootcamp Windows 7 or my HP laptop in Vista, while my MacBook could access both sides of the drive. HOWEVER, after this crash, BOTH my Windows 7 and Vista can access both sides of the drive (so My files are still all there and accessible) but my MacBook Pro swears that the Apple partition is doomed.
Since the Apple side of my laptop is my primary workhorse I really want to figure out how to fix my drive.
    So Questions:
    1. Anything else I can provide to the experts out there to help me get this fixed?
    2. Can I custom fix this via accessing the drive on either of the Windows systems?
    3. Why would it suddenly show up in Windows when it became unaccessible to Mac?
    Thanks All!

    UPDATE:
It has been maybe a month since this happened.
After I made this post and was checking emails, walking away from computer, and then came back my Mac partition of the External Drive has shown up on the Desktop...
So, in the ever immortal way of asking the tech to come check the issue and the issue resolving itself, perhaps I should posted on the forum sooner...
NOTE: The disk still shows up as unusable in the Disk Utility and it appears that the files are read only (cannot make a new folder on this side of the external drive)
I still consider this a volatile issue because I do not want to lose the files on this half of the partition and I have not gotten a replacement drive yet (too much data to move to my computer and then format the current drive)

    Hi.
I have currently a Macbook and I am also thinking about going to buy a Macbook Pro, question is can I access my iphoto and itunes libraries from both Mac’s on my single external hard drive without the libraries being affected?
    (Sorry if a simple question)

  • MacBook Pro 10.7.3 Won't boot using External HDD

Hi I have created an image on my Mac that has 10.7.4 and I wanted to try it on my new MacBook Pro with 10.7.3. I am able to select the external HDD but wouldn't let me boot. Same image works on another Mac.

    Hi ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies
If any of the boxes on the left are selected, deselect then click OK then restart your Mac.
If it's not a proxy issue, if you have anti virus software installed, disable that.
Try turning off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security & Privacy
Apps such as Little Snitch can prevent access to the internet.

  • My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

We'll need to know more to beable to help. Do you want to try to restore your photos from your iPhone to your Mac, or try to recover the photos from the old iPhoto Library on your Mac?
What is the situation of your Mac now? In hat way did it crash? A hardware problem with the drive? Does the system not start properly? Does iPhoto not launch? Do you still have the iPhoto Library on your mac or a backup, so we could try to rescue the photos there?
What versions of iPhoto are on your iPhone and your Mac?
however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?
On the iPhone you cannot access the "package contents" - IOS hides the file system from the users. To restore photos from your phone share all iPhoto photos to your Camera Roll, that are not already in the Camera Roll,  and then connect the iPhone via USB and import the Camera Roll to iPhoto or Image Capture. Or use any of the other sharing methods described on thos manual page: see:  Ways to share photos http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnk7d8f763e
To retrieve photos from a corruptrd iPhoto Library on your Mac we need to know the version number and more about the "crash" you experienced, the state of your mac, the system, the data. Please post back with more details.

  • How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I purchased a new MacBook Pro and when transferring files iphoto did not transfer.  I have a question mark in the place of the icon.  My pictures are in library but can't properly access iphoto.  Thank you

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • My macbook pro crashes constantly

    Okay, so here's the deal:
My macbook pro crashes constantly and it seems to be getting worse.
    It's a macbook pro mid 2010 purchase with a 2.66 i7 4gigs ddr3 288mb intel hd graphics running OS X 10.8.5.
The problem occurs in numerous different circumstances. In every case it will cause the screep to go black, crash, restart itself, and give me a message saying it restarted due to an error. After that it will be, seemingly, fine, until I run into another of the myriad instances when it will crash. It's very easy to duplicate so if posting the error message will help I can definitely do that. Here is a list of occasions that the crash currently occurs:
About 20 seconds after opening photobooth.
Sometimes, but not always, after opening iPhoto.
Netflix, whenever I try to watch something instantly.
Trying to update to OS X Maverick.
Certain types of ads on sites that use video seem cause it.
Tried to install Starcraft 2 one time and it doesn't seem to like that either.
Firefox likes to crash about twice as frequently as Safari for some reason.
Honestly, there are probably others, but I just avoid certain programs now because it's such a pain.

Here's one. There's a 3 year time limit? This has only started occuring within the last 7 - 8 months.

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • I am having a macbook pro 13" whenever I connect my reliance net connect to it the volume goes down by 50% automatically can anybody help me out?.

I am having a macbook pro 13" whenever I connect my reliance netconnect to it its volume goes down by 50%...

The problem is the Reliance software.  You can verify this in the crash report.  Try bypassing the Reliance software and just use the Network System Preference pane.  Enter the same infromation there as you would in the Reliance software.  Then hit "connect."  It's worked pretty well for me.
