MacBook Pro crashing hourly

Why is my 17" MacBook Pro with 16 gigs of ram is crashing and rebooting every hour or so? The OS is 10.9.5 and Any Ideas on how to fix this?

Hey There Garybefree01,
The resource below describes the issue you are having and suggests some troubleshooting steps to resolve the kernel panics.
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."
In rare situations, your Mac may do one or more of the following: spontaneously restart, become unresponsive, turn off, display a message "Your computer restarted because of a problem." or display a message "You shut down your computer because of a problem.".
About unexpected restarts
In rare instances, OS X may encounter an unrecoverable issue affecting all open apps. When this happens, your Mac must be restarted. This is sometimes due to what is known as a "kernel panic" because an underlying part of the operating system (the "kernel") has determined there is an issue that requires a restart.
If your computer experiences a kernel panic, a message may appear for a few seconds explaining that the computer has been restarted: "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." After a moment, the computer continues starting up.
Preventing unexpected restarts
In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with the Mac itself. They are usually caused by software that was installed, or a problem with connected hardware.
To help avoid kernel panics, install all available software updates until Software Update reports, "Your software is up to date." OS X updates help your Mac handle the kinds of issues that can cause kernel panics, such as malformed network packets, or third party software issues. For most kernel panics, updating your software is all you have to do.
After your computer restarts
Once your Mac restarts successfully, an alert message appears, "You shut down your computer because of a problem."
Click Open to re-open any apps that were active before you restarted. If you believe the issue may have been caused by one of the apps that you were using, click Cancel instead. If you don't click anything for 60 seconds, OS X automatically continues as if you had clicked Open.
Note: If your computer is unable to recover from the issue, it may restart repeatedly, and then shut down. If this happens, or if you see the "computer restarted because of a problem" message frequently, see the Additional Information section of this article for guidance.Reporting the issue to Apple
Once you log in, OS X lets you know that, "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
Click "Report…" if you want to see details related to the issue. You can also send these details to Apple. Sending these reports helps Apple to investigate the kinds of issues that cause panics to occur. Viewing the report may also provide additional clues as to what caused the issue.
Note: If you find the term "machine check" in the "Problem Details and System Configuration" field of this report, it may indicate a hardware-related issue. See the Additional Information section of this article for guidance.
Click OK to send the report to Apple, or close the window to dismiss the report. If the issue doesn't happen again during the next few weeks, the issue is likely resolved.Software known to cause kernel panics
OS X Mavericks helps you correct kernel panics related to software you may have installed. If the cause of the kernel panic is known, Mavericks offers to help you disable its related software:
If "More Info…" appears, click it to see more details about the issue, including possible workarounds or resolutions.
Selecting the option to "Ignore" does not alter the software that may be related to the issue.
"Move to Trash" moves software that is likely related to the issue to the Trash, but the Trash is not automatically emptied. When you select this option, an additional sheet appears:
Click "Restart" to disable the software that may be responsible for the issue.
When prompted, enter an administrator name and password.
Click "Move to Trash".
After restarting, the related software is in your Trash.
Click the Trash icon in the Dock to see which software was removed.
Contact the developer of the software to see if an update or more information is available.
Empty the Trash if you want to permanently remove the third party software.
Additional Information
Read the following information to learn more about diagnosing and troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic.
Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you need help with this process, consider bringing your Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.  If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
Tip: To help diagnose recurring kernel panics, record the date and time it occurs, and any information that appears with the kernel panic message.
Was the computer starting up, shutting down, or performing a particular task when the recurring kernel panic happened?
Is the kernel panic intermittent, or does it happen every time you do a certain thing? For example, were you playing a particular game, or printing at the time?
Does it occur only when a certain external device is connected, or a device is connected to a certain port?
Isolate hardware or software as the cause of the issue
To try to figure out if the issue is related to software or hardware, use the computer with a fresh installation of OS X on an external drive.
Start the Mac from OS X Recovery.
If a kernel panic still occurs when started from Recovery, there is likely a hardware issue. See the "Hardware troubleshooting" section below for additional information.
Open Disk Utility and use "Repair Disk" on your Mac's internal hard drive (named Macintosh HD by default).
Important: If Disk Utility is unable to repair the internal drive, you should back up your important data immediately and if possible, reformat the drive. Consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for further diagnosis. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
Connect an external drive with at least 10 GB of free space. Note: Make sure the external drive does not cause kernel panics, and is the only device on its USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt port. Connecting the external drive and its cables to another Mac can help make sure the drive does not cause kernel panics.
Install OS X on the external drive.
Start up from the external drive.
Use Software Update to install all updates until it reports "Your software is up to date."
Don't install additional software on the external drive, but instead use the Apple applications to surf the web, view QuickTime movies, email, print, scan, and/or other activities. Continue using your Mac for the amount of time it would usually take for the issue to occur.
If a panic occurs, select the "Hardware troubleshooting" section below to further diagnose the issue.
If a panic does not occur, select the "Software troubleshooting" section below article to further diagnose the issue.
Hardware troubleshooting
Disconnect the external drive used in the above test to determine if the kernel panic is due to a hardware issue.
Check peripheral devices first
Go to the next section if you have no devices attached to your Mac.
Turn off your Mac.
Disconnect all peripheral devices. If you have a desktop Mac, make sure all you have connected is a display and Apple keyboard with Apple mouse or trackpad.
Turn on your Mac.
Use your Mac for the amount of time it would usually take for a kernel panic to occur.
If a kernel panic does occur: Proceed the next section to check the internal RAM and third-party hardware.
If a kernel panic does not occur: Power down the Mac and connect one peripheral device at a time and test until a kernel panic occurs.Note: A combination of peripherals may be the cause of a kernel panic. Disconnect one peripheral at a time to see if it causes a kernel panic by itself. If the kernel panic does not occur, continue to add peripherals until you find the other peripheral needed to cause the kernel panic.
Check internal RAM and third-party hardware
Turn off your Mac.
Reseat the Apple RAM, and remove third-party RAM and third-party internal hardware.  If you do not have the Apple RAM that came with the system, reseat the third-party RAM.
Turn on your Mac.
Use your Mac for the amount of time it would usually take for a kernel panic to occur.
If the kernel panic does not occur: The third-party RAM or internal third-party hardware may need to be replaced.
If a kernel panic does occur:  Bring your Mac to an Apple Store, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service and support. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
Software troubleshooting
Disconnect the external drive used in the above test to determine the kernel panic is due to a software based issue.
Start the Mac from OS X Recovery and reinstall OS X on your Mac.
Start from the installation of OS X you just created.
Use Software Update to install all updates until it reports "Your software is up to date."
Download and install any third-party software updates before reinstalling third-party software, especially drivers and kernel extensions.
     Examples include:
Virtualization software
Drivers for add-on third party display cards
Anti-virus software
Networking software (especially software which enables third party network devices)
Add-on file system support software; for example, software that lets your write to NTFS formatted media.
If the issue continues, you will need to erase and install OS X as follows:
Start the Mac from OS X Recovery.
Complete a disk image backup via Disk Utility of the internal drive to an external drive with enough free space.
Erase the internal drive using Disk Utility.
Install OS X.
Start from the internal drive.
Use Software Update to install all updates until it reports "Your software is up to date."
Re-install your third-party apps and copy your user data from the disk image backup you created in step 2.
Note: Avoid copying data from the /Library and /System folders on your backup disk image.
Advanced information about kernel panics and panic logs
You can check kernel panic logs for more information. The kernel panic text is added to the log after you restart the computer, assuming that you did not reset PRAM (the kernel panic text is stored in PRAM until you restart). In Mac OS X v10.6 or later, the logs are located in in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.
Information that may aid developers in the investigation of a software issue may be in the log. The information may also provide clues as to what may have caused the kernel panic.
Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics – This technote addresses kernel panics: what they are, how to read panic logs and how to debug the code that caused the panic.
Kernel Core Dumps – This technote explains how you can enable remote kernel core dumps used to collect data about the kernel panic.
Note: If you are a software developer, booter settings and debug flags may cause different symptoms for kernel panics.

  • Macbook Pro crashes intermittently and freeze!!!

I bought my macbook pro 07 august
my macbook pro crashes intermittently, sometimes a a couple of minutes or a few hours. when it crashes, everything freeze and have to press the power button in order to turn it off. tried changing RAM, but it will crash.
Already sent to Apple service centre twice!!!! Run EVERY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TEST! The technician said my macbook pro is FINE!?
    what's going on?
    I'M REALLY DISAPPOINTED!!!

    Suggest you try the following
    1. Insert Leopard Install DVD
    2. Shut down
    3. Reboot holding down the "C" on your keyboard
    4. Click on "English" (assuming that's your language on the computer)
    5. Find "Dick Utility" on the drop down menu at the top of the screen
    6. Select your drive
    7. Run "Repair Disk" (permission repair can be run from your hard drive without booting to the DVD)
    8. Chances are you're crashing because of an incorrect file/folder count (miss-matched). Disk Utility (from the DVD) will repair this. Continuous freeze-ups are probably from this incorrect count. Unless it's repaired, you'll keep crashing. This repair will keep you running until you figure out the cause. I have a similar problem with sleep/wake. At least this keeps me running for a fair amount of time. I've been trying to figure out the cause (unsuccessfully, as yet).

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • My 06' Macbook Pro crashed with vertical, green pixelated lines and now will not advance past the turn-on screen with the apple filled with green lines as well. Then, it says to hold down the power button to restart. Help?

My 06' Macbook Pro crashed with vertical, green pixelated lines and now will not advance past the turn-on screen with the apple filled with green lines as well. Then, it says to hold down the power button to restart. I have tried several times to get it past this point but tnothing helped.
I have an appointment at the Apple store today, but was wondering : will all of the information and files on my desktop be lost? Or is this a logic board problem?
Any help is much MUCH appricated.

I'm not sure, if you're out of warrenty it'll cost quite a bit for the replacement of the logic board replacement...unless you have apple care. you could ask apple to try and recover your hard drive but i'm not sure.

  • My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

  • My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

We'll need to know more to beable to help. Do you want to try to restore your photos from your iPhone to your Mac, or try to recover the photos from the old iPhoto Library on your Mac?
What is the situation of your Mac now? In hat way did it crash? A hardware problem with the drive? Does the system not start properly? Does iPhoto not launch? Do you still have the iPhoto Library on your mac or a backup, so we could try to rescue the photos there?
What versions of iPhoto are on your iPhone and your Mac?
however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?
On the iPhone you cannot access the "package contents" - IOS hides the file system from the users. To restore photos from your phone share all iPhoto photos to your Camera Roll, that are not already in the Camera Roll,  and then connect the iPhone via USB and import the Camera Roll to iPhoto or Image Capture. Or use any of the other sharing methods described on thos manual page: see:  Ways to share photos http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnk7d8f763e
To retrieve photos from a corruptrd iPhoto Library on your Mac we need to know the version number and more about the "crash" you experienced, the state of your mac, the system, the data. Please post back with more details.

  • While running on battery, MacBook Pro crashes after a few minutes of use.

While running on battery, my MacBook Pro crashes (shuts down) after a few minutes (less than 10) of use. Battery indicator still says I have enough power (more than 75%) so it can't be related to the other reported issues with low battery crashes.
While on power adaptor, I don't have any issues.
I checked battery condition as suggested in all the forum threads I can find and its fine.
    Running Lion 10.7.2

PRAM reset did not resolve the issue

my macbook pro crashes after a few minutes of playing a game or using photoshop? i just got it fixed motherboard. do i have to do an update?

There are no updates currently available beyond v10.8.4 for Mountain Lion.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
If that doesn't help, the startup disk may need repairing.
Turn the Mac off, wait about ten seconds then startup while holding down the Command + R keys. Let go of the keys when you see the spinning progress indicator.
From there you should be able to access the utilities in recovery mode to verify and repair the disk if necesssary, or reinstal OS.

  • My macbook pro crashes constantly

    Okay, so here's the deal:
My macbook pro crashes constantly and it seems to be getting worse.
    It's a macbook pro mid 2010 purchase with a 2.66 i7 4gigs ddr3 288mb intel hd graphics running OS X 10.8.5.
The problem occurs in numerous different circumstances. In every case it will cause the screep to go black, crash, restart itself, and give me a message saying it restarted due to an error. After that it will be, seemingly, fine, until I run into another of the myriad instances when it will crash. It's very easy to duplicate so if posting the error message will help I can definitely do that. Here is a list of occasions that the crash currently occurs:
About 20 seconds after opening photobooth.
Sometimes, but not always, after opening iPhoto.
Netflix, whenever I try to watch something instantly.
Trying to update to OS X Maverick.
Certain types of ads on sites that use video seem cause it.
Tried to install Starcraft 2 one time and it doesn't seem to like that either.
Firefox likes to crash about twice as frequently as Safari for some reason.
Honestly, there are probably others, but I just avoid certain programs now because it's such a pain.

Here's one. There's a 3 year time limit? This has only started occuring within the last 7 - 8 months.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro **crashing** changing to a blue screen with lines or distorted screen when I open logic or Ableton Live

Why is my MacBook Pro **crashing** changing to a blue screen with lines or distorted screen when I open logic or Ableton Live. Then I have to restart by long pressing the power button. Can somebody plz help me

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • My 15in. macbook pro crashes randomly

My 15in. Macbook Pro crashes all the time now. before it did it very seldomly. but now it seems like anything i do will cause it to crash. if i open garageband or even QuickTime. OR sometimes if it's sitting for awhile, and i just move the mouse, it will crash.
I heard that there were some problems with a few of the 15 inch macbook pros that were made Mid-2010 and that you could get a new motherboard installed FOR FREE if it was bought around that time. is this true?

It's true. Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro came with a defective NVIDIA GPU that causes unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
From what you say, it's probable that the GPU has failed, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller

  • My MacBook Pro crashes randomly - suspect HW failure

My MacBook Pro crashes randomly and the crash log always shows something wrong with CPUs 6 and 7. I have tried to run benchmarks to stress the CPUs but that doesn't do the trick. Compiling with Xcode seems to crash "cc1plus" task, sometimes it's the kernel_task, but the rest of the log is always pretty much the same. I have run the Apple hardware test and another memory test - no failure there.

  • Macbook Pro crashes on mouse click

    Hello everyone,
I've been having this problem for two weeks now and it's happening more and more frequently!
    Info:
    Macbook Pro 15'' mid 2011
Mac OS X Mavericks / Mac OS X Yosemite
Hard Drive: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD
    8 GB Ram
    THE ISSUE:
Every so often at a random time, at the exact moment I perform a mouse click, my macbook pro crashes.
That instant, the screen goes dark ( like I just ripped out it's battery ) and reboots automatically, saying "your mac restarted because of a problem".
Like I said, it's gotten more and more frequent! ( 5 times a day or more now... )
    WHAT I'VE TRIED:
So the problem occurred in Mavericks, so I figured I'll install Yosemite ( on a new partition ) and see if it's any better.. Well it isn't...
Same problem, same type of crash.
Then I figured maybe it's related to my magic mouse.. So i turned it off and used a third party mouse. No luck! It also happened while using the Macbook's trackpad.
I also haven't found anyone with a similar problem online so far, so if any of you have experienced something like this or know what might be causing it, i'd be grateful for any information!
    Best regards,
    Robert
