MacBook Pro 'Crunching/Grinding' noise, is it the fan/hard drive?

I posted a YouTube video so you could hear the noise my MacBook Pro 15 inch laptop is making. Here is the link as well as the copy/pasted description I used on YouTube (too lazy to re-write) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW8bIOeOv-w
Hi guys,
Two weeks ago my MacBook Pro started getting really hot on the back left hand side of the keyboard area -- to the point that I couldn't have it resting on my legs.
It is now making a crunching noise from the same area. Sometimes it doesn't crouch and other times it's so loud it sounds like an expiring bomb. It doesn't have to do with how many programs I'm using. I just watched a full movie and it was silent on the crunch noise ... Other times nothing is running and it's just sitting there crunching away.
Not sure if this is a fan or hard drive issue -- I've YouTubed other videos but my noise seems to be completely different from everything I've found. Any help would be great.
Heading into Apple tomorrow but I'm worried it'll stop making the noise when I go in, like the car whose breaks squeak until you take it to the mechanic type of thing.
Any help would be grateful appreciated and received.
Best, MPG.

The technicians at the genius bar can listen to your link as well.
Ciao.

Can I install OSX 10.5.8 on a new macbook pro which comes with Lion? I would like to clone my old hard drive onto the new mac without lion causing compatibility issues????

What if replace the new 2011 MBP drive with a brand new SSD with snow leopard pre installed?
Snow Leopard may be possible, depending on whether it was shipped from the factory with SL and had Lion installed in the supply chain, or if it shipped with Lion in the first place. However the SL version would have to be the one which was originally installed or later, which likely means 10.6.7 or.8. The retail 10.6.3 installer won't work, nor will an installation cloned from a different Mac unless it was from the exact same model.
Plenty of threads around concerning installing SL in place of Lion - do a search. Some have been successful.
Replacing the HD wouldn't be necessary, and won't make the OS version run the rest of the hardware.

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering  "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount"  and "diskutil info disk2."  Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help?  Thank you. blelambert

i have just bought a macbook pro and i want to use an ext hard drive with it which i previously used on a windows computer, but when i plug it in it doesn't show up on my macbook pro, I've wiped it and just need to format it but don't know how, any help would be much appreciated

Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

  • Hi, I have macbook Pro, running Leopard OS X. I partitioned my hard drive a while ago to install windows and only allowed myself 10 Gig of data. Anyway, i deleted windows and want another OSX on there instead. How do i make this partition bigger please??

Hi, I have macbook Pro, running Leopard OS X. I partitioned my hard drive a while ago to install windows and only allowed myself 10 Gig of data. I deleted windows after i realised i wasnt enjoying using it at all and wasted my hard drive. I now decided that i want another OSX on there instead yet i have only allowed myself 10 gb on the partition. I have ben thru some programms but am struggling on making this partition bigger.
I only want it at 20gb but cant seem to make the partition bigger, only smaller or split it into further partition.
Is there a way to do this, i have all installation discs from original OSX so think this could help.
Any help please would be fantastic.
    Thanks Chris

Hi, dragging the partition will only make smaller, not larger. In disk utility you can only split or make smaller the partitions. Yes i booted from installation disks also but still no help.
And Brody, I am willing to erase the disc completely, infact jus started doing a backup in order to do so but that failed also. And the information you gave on partition a hard drive, Although very simple and i already know how to do this, but it wont let me make the partition bigger, and i dont want to make a new partition, just enlarge the one i already have, which i dont see possible from disk utility.
Getting really frustrated now, even backing up is saying no to me. **** external being a douche.
I dont mind erasing the hard drive but surely this must be doable without deleting the secondary partition back t a single volume, and re partitioning into 2 volumes again.
    Thanks again

  • My MacBook Pro won't let me mount my external Hard Drive. Just trying to restore my iTunes library.

My MacBook Pro, less than a year old, started acting weird. I backed everything up, took it in to Best Buy, who sent it out to Apple Repair and they put in a new motherboard.
It's running on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
Now I am trying to put everything back on the computer from my external Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive. MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive.
I tried Disk Utility. I can see the external drive, and did a repair disk and verify disk. Several times. Each time it says "This partition map seems to be ok."
However, I am not able to mount it, as that option is greyed out and i can't select it.
Also, under the Icon for the external hard drive, it has the Macintosh HD Icon (essentially my computer). I tried to restore this way, didn't work.
I need this to mount, as it has all of my itunes stuff on it; dozens of my sons movies, and my entire iTunes library.
PLEASE HEEEEELP!! HOW CAN I MOUNT THIS EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE? Thank you in advance

Try things in this USB/Firewire faq.

  • My Mid 2009 Macbook pro (Just purchased) will not turn on after hard drive change and ram upgrade

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive.

  • My Macbook Pro won't let me use my external hard drive anymore, Help!

Every time I go to time machine it has my internal hard drive as the back up drive, when it should be my external hard drive. When I tried to select my external hard drive it doesn't do anything, it goes right back to the internal hard drive. Time machine and my external hard drive had worked the night before and I havent had any problems backing it up until I loaded Mountain Lion. I dont know if that could be one of the reasons or not. Also the hard drive is almost full, however I thought that this couldn't be the problem because I have it set to automatically delete stuff when full. Also the ownership is not set and I can't enable it. I have looked around and there is not an "ignore ownership" box to check from get info... I am lost and somewhat new to macs so any help would be appreciated.

if she's not the only person with Mac and this problem - go to school network administrator, something wrong.
If there are other people with macs and without this problem - compare network settings.
Also disabling 'Stealth mode' can help sometimes.
see p8 here to find setting.

  • I am running out of space on my MacBook Pro. If i back up my entire hard drive. Can i then delete programs etc. to free up space and if i need them again reinstall from the backup?

My MacBook Pro is running low on hard drive space. Can i perform a backup and then delete programs, files, photo's etc. on my hard drive, And then access them through the back up at a later time?

I agree with samberl ... the problem is not the saving of your programs to reinstall, but that you have outgrown your hard disk.
Sadly, harddisks are about 160% of what they were about 3 months ago due to flooding in Thailand and labor strikes there.  A bad time indeed to update harddisks.
You could make enough room by moving some data files for now to an existing external drive.
Then wait for prices to drop.
Then create a clone of your internal drive on a new (cheaper then) drive, and install a new bigger and clone back onto the new drive.
If you can wait a few months.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2012 2.9GHz i7 RAM and Hard drive upgrade

Hi, I was thinking about getting a new Macbook Pro but thought it would be cheaper to just upgrade it myself.
    1) I wanted to remove the optical drive as I rarely use it. Then add a second hard drive in there to give myself more memory.
    2) Remove the current 2x4GB RAM slots, and replace them with 2x8GB RAM slots to max it out to 16GB so I can run 64 bit versions of Audio production software.
If I do this, will it void my Apple Care Warranty?

Yes.  Adding ram is permitted as a user upgrade.  But removing the optical drive and adding a second hard drive is not a user permitted upgrade.

  • Macbook pro flashing question mark folder, won't recognize hard drive

My 2010 macbook pro froze and after restarting I was greeted with a flashing question mark folder. I then restarted again and held down "option" key and went into Mac OS X utilities then into disk utilities. In disk utilities, my only drive options are "superdrive" "disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system". My hard drive is no where to be seen. I also tried to install a new hard drive but the same thing happened, the computer could not recognize that there was a hard drive present. What can I do to fix this??

    Hi bigdubee,
The exact same thing happened to my 2010 MacBook Pro today.  Restarting with the "option" key held down, I get only 2 of the 3 options you listed in disk utilities ("disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system".
Did you take your Macbook Pro to the Apple store?  And were they able to fix it?

My Lacie external drive and Seagate external drive are not being recognised by my new MacBook Pro 13" retina with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.  Initially the Lacie worked, but that has dropped out - cannot find it in disk utilites.
Lacie is recognised by my friends computer with Maverick - OS X 10.9.5.  Currently downloading data and will try to reconfigure the external drive.  Is Yosemite truly not acknowledging other drivers?  USB memory key is fine.  Lacie has been my back up for some years, also Seagate, but on older computers. • Why does Macbook Pro rename my Time Machine and other external hard drives?

Why does my Macbook Pro rename my Time Machine to "Time Machine I" and then back again periodically.  Last night it was one name, this morning it is another. It also does it on other external hard drives - usually by adding a I after the name. It is frustrating for me because I store a large runtime folder on an external hard drive and end up losing a lot of time with my computer not being able to find files because of the renaming.
And even though it still looks like Time Machine under "Get info: - when I open a folder window or Disk Utility it has a new name, and there is no way to change it.  I've seen other questions that mention Macs renaming themselves, so it seems like a similar issue. I did try deleting the preferences plist file, but that did not work.
Is this a glitch with this particular model or operating system?

strange, my external HDs were added to the exception list automatically. maybe because they wouldn't fit on the time machine volume.
It seems to depend on when the drives were connected. When you first turn Time Machine on, it only excludes the TM drive itself, and any drives not formatted HFS+.
If you connect a drive later on, that drive will be excluded automatically.
