the laptop seems to be working but there is a nasty bump on the top left keyboard and I'm worried it's damaged inside.
what are the options available?

Bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  The damage that the MBP endured is not considered a manufacturing defect thus will not be covered by Apple Care.  Any repair costs will be bourne by you.
Ciao.

  • Is there a key on the MacBook Pro to toggle display options for a projector

I have had some difficulty getting my InFocus projector to consistently work correctly with my MacBook Pro. Is there a key on the MacBook Pro that toggles the options for projector display? There was one on my last MacBook and my previous PowerBook.
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

No, there is no longer a key to control external display modes (it's F7 on my 1st gen MBP, but the option was removed along with the embedded numeric keypad in the Early 2008 models). There's not a substitute keyboard shortcut (with the exception of installing a macro player like Keyboard Maestro). Your main option is System Preferences > Displays (as stated, ticking the box to show Displays in the menu bar provides a helpful shortcut).

    Because line-in has been removed.
It does allow for an Apple headset with mic., but I don't know if it would work with third-party ones.
You'll need to use a Griffin iMic or similar to use line-in via a USB port.
The same goes for the 15" retina, the newest MBA and the new iMac (whenever it finally arrives).

hey guyz i wanted to ask whether playing excessive (1-2 hours daily) need for speed carbon on my macbook pro using the arrow keys to control the car damage the arrow keys of the MBP??
pls answer asap i am worried..

I don't think that you have to worry about arrow keys because they won't damage with their use (unless you hit heavily these keys). Using games, there are other things to worry, as the temperature of the Mac, but fans will turn on automatically when your Mac needs

  • Macbook pro 17" digital audio option not showing in Audio preference pane

I seem to be having a problem with the Digital Audio setup with my macbook Pro 17"  2006, running Snow Leopard, when I go to select the SPDIF option in the Audio Prefernce Pane it doesn't give that option!, like it did in Leopard and Tiger of which I had running on this Macbook pro.
Running Snow Leopard this option seem to be missing, I looked in the Midi Setup etc in Utilities as that how I worked around it in Tiger as well as Leopard.
I also have the same problem with my other newer and last of the Macbook Pro 17" model as ti doesn't show in the Audio Preference pane either. Is this an omission in the OS or with my hardware as had no proble,s connectiong to a Sony MD and Tascam MD rack system before. I can always go back to using the older OS if thats the problem but find it hard to believe that All of my Laptops 15" & 17" are all up the swany with the same SPDIF problem.

also posted this question in the MacBook forum. Problem eventually solved by trashing iTunes preference files & the iTunes application, then re-installing iTunes.

  • Macbook pro and photoshop - alt/option

Recently purchased a Macbook Pro 15in. When using photoshop or illustrator, with the track pad or tablet, while using the pen tool, I get the 'V' convert anchor tool, but when I start to drag an anchorpoint, it moves the artboard around instead of the anchor point. I also get the same thing when I try to use the Zoom tool. I use the alt/option key to zoom out, then the same thing happens.
Any one else have this issue? Just checked on my Macmini, with keybaord, and there is no problem.

I' gonna go ahead and bump this. I can't seem to zoom or use the pen tool without switching tools manually. It's killing me.

  • Macbook pro - no audio - no option for internal speakers in sound prefs.

No audio will play from my 2011 macbook pro. It is fully updated. In sound preferences, there is no 'internal speakers' option to select in output, and no 'internal microphone' in input. No red light in headphone jack. Any solutions?

    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:

    3. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so uncheck it.
Option click the speaker icon, if present and select Internal Speakers.
    4. Launch iTunes and play a song through headphone and adjust the volume

  • Repairing Screen on MacBook Pro (Damaged by cleanser)

Well, much to my dismay, my 4-year old nephew decided to spray Lysol on my laptop screen and now there are "patches" on the screen which likely need repair. The screen is very much operational, but as you could imagine, it is quite annoying to use.
Approximately how much will this cost to repair and/or replace via Apple or are there do it yourself options? Thanks.

are there other alternatives to repair it at a cheaper cost?
Unlikely. Normal stores are not going to stock that at all, so your best bet is going to be web sites who resell parts from Mac laptops that have been parted out. But the unibody MacBook Pros are pretty new, and the nonglare screens are not the standard configuration so they are going to be rare. You might not even get much of a price break. If you want to look around here are some of the places that have traditionally sold Mac parts. It might be worth contacting them to see if they know of better sources for replacement screens.

  • MacBook Pro damaged by clone?

I have just cloned my entire 2008 MacBook pro HD to my mid2010MacBook pro HD(snow leopard) by using carbon copy cloner. I am worried that I will have caused potential damage to this newer unit, as I've completely overwritten it with an earlier models architecture. I would greatly value any input!
    Thanks

For starters... you can relax... you haven't "damaged" anything.  Cloning an image between different hardware is generally not a good idea.  Cloning an older version to a new system can potentially cause problems as it likely does not have the support (drivers, etc) necessary to support the newer hardware.  This can result in anything from poor performance, stability issues, right up to not booting at all.  Mind you, these are all software related issues, it does not mean that any physical damage has been done.
I would probably restore the 2010 machine using the restore media it came with and then perform any updates (including re-installing Lion if you had done that), then use Migration Assistant as Ralph Landry1 had suggested to migrate your programs/data over to your 2010 machine.
If your 2010 machine is running okay now, there is a good chance you'll be fine.  I'm just a bit anal about these things and I like to eliminate as many potential causes for problems as possible.

  • Macbook pro damage

I have a question that i could not find directly in the communties:
does apple care also insure for damages?
Like: if the macbook pro falls of the table? or slips out of my hand? or it falls?
Does apple care insure that also? or do i need a new insurance for that?
Not that my macbook did fall, but i want to insure it to make sure and don't want to have trouble in the future.

As Allan says, AppleCare does not cover that.  Your homeowner's insurance should, if you're a home owner and have such insurance.  However, you'll want to check your policy and make sure how such claims will be handled.  Once, when I was younger and had a crappy policy, we had a leak under the kitchen sink that went undiscovered until it had done some damage.  I filed a claim, got a few hundred bucks...  and then my rate jacked up so much that I had paid them back in about 4 months.  And I had to continue paying the higher rate after that.  I ended up paying them many times more than I would have if I'd just swallowed the small cost of repairs.

  • MacBook Pro - what's best option for university Windows apps?

My son is starting university and considering buying a MacBook Pro (we are a Mac family). However, his math textbooks (calculus and linear algebra) come with bundled software, or keys to downloadable software, that only runs on Windows. I haven't been paying attention, and would appreciate some practical advice on how to run Windows. Please tell me if I understand correctly...
To run either Boot Camp or Parallels, do you have to buy and install a copy of Windows separately? Or is Boot Camp an emulator that doesn't require stand-alone Windows?
What Windows version do you recommend? (Sounds like Vista is problematic)
Can you just install Windows like you install the Mac OS, or is it more complicated?
In my experience, education software is poorly written. Comments on the Apple Store website say Parallels is "picky" about software. Do you think Boot Camp would be enough?
With Boot Camp can you switch back and forth on the desktop (like Parallels says it can), or do you have to re-boot?
    Any other observations?
    Thanks for any help.

You want a review that looks at both side by side.
Vista is no more a problem than any other OS, and probably easier in some ways.
From around the time Vista came out, so rather dated, and once SP1 is out, well I found BootCamp 1.3 and recent updates and drivers have made using 64-bit fine, stable, and can run all day w/o problems.

Having used Vista for the last year, and OS X for 7, I think it would be easier to go with Vista than "back in time" with XP - if Windows is a new experience.
If they are going to have to use and learn Windows, they'll need to get up to speed on how to lock down their system and use it. That would make a VM easier to get started but yes, native Windows (BootCamp) would be same as using a PC mostly. And force your son to learn Windows (but get him a book to help, too).

  • Apple MacBook Pro - Damaged screen

Is there any email address to ask for any support to Apple staff???

    "Dear Sir,
On the last January we read about the new MacBook Pro and ordered one exemplar in order to test its performance.
We received the ordered laptop (Serial Number W860806KVJ3) on the 21st February 2006 with Windows Office 2004 Software.
Unfortunately after only few days I hit the screen of MacBook Pro with the iPod after its synchronization and a crack appeared on it.
So we brought the MacBook Pro for the repair of screen to the nearest Apple Center in Rome and after two weeks we received the proposal for repair.
The cost for replacement of screen is Euro 900 (+VAT)!!! Therefore we decided to abandon the laptop and do not buy Apple anymore.
We have only a professional use of laptops, then the fragility of parts like screen and the exaggerate cost of maintenance is a limit in making use of Apple computers.
We would be very glad in receiving your comments about our experience

    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
