Macbook Pro displays a diagonally patterned screen

My MacBook Pro will begin to boot when the screen suddenly becomes distorted by an alternately patterned gray screen. I have performed 2 safeboots and after them, it seems to work fine for just a few (3,4) boots after that. One time when it booted successfully, the screen's background light began to flash very quickly until the screen was distorted again like in the beginning.
I've tried cleaning the PRAM and the NVRAM also but it did not fix the problem.
Can somebody help with this? Does anyone know what's causing the problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
By-the-way, it won't even turn on right now. :-|

Looks like graphics chipset problem. Please take it the Apple store and see what can they do for you.
Best.

My Macbook Pro Displays Diagonal Rectangles across the screen. These rectangles also appear when I attach it to an external monitor. Also, when this problem started it will only boot in safe mode.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Dou you have an ATO Graphics card? I used to have a similar problem on a Windows machine with an ATI X850XT. I tried taking out and re-installing the card. This fixed the problem for a while. I came back, tried the same, problem solved.
Don't know what causes it, though... But I don't think it's software related. Could be I'm wrong, though...

Power on MacBook Pro takes me to login screen. All user icons appear as normal. Once I enter password for myself (administrator) spinning takes longer than normal and doesn't log in but displays a no sign (circle w line through it) when attempting to login from guest account it takes me to screen that says that the computer will restart to a safe safari system for the guest user. • Resolution of MacBook Pro display - always this fuzzy??

I should have done my homework, but...
I'm very sensitive to the fuzziness of the MacBook Pro display (especially the nearly grey and poorly defined letters on Word) and, to tell the truth, it's making my stomach turn and giving me a headache. I just received this computer through work, can't return it, and I'm stuck with it for three years now. what can I do or purchase to make the display CRYSTAL CLEAR (as in laser print quality)?
Will an external monitor help? Which one?
How can my iPod touch look so brilliant and this $2,500 laptop so archaic?
Thanks for any and all help,
    Ants

The reason your iPod Touch looks sharper is that it has a much higher pixel density than the MBP. Your iPod's screen is 163 ppi (pixels per inch) versus 110 ppi for the MBP. However, if it looks very fuzzy, I would agree with the other responder that your resolution isn't set to the screen's native resolution (1440 x 900) or that you are zoomed in (press control and scroll down on your mouse scroll wheel or two-fingered scroll on with the trackpad).

  • How can I turn my Macbook Pro display off instantly?

    Hello.
I love having my laptop connected to my TV via HDMI cable to watch TV shows. But I dont like putting it in Clamshell mode because I have a VLC Remote app that lets me put the next film on instantly without touching the laptop.
I like to have the laptop display fully off / black so that i'm not see two images (TV and Laptop), so what I do is hold the brightness key down to turn off the display.
Does anyone know of a menu bar app, or a command to turn the display off instantly with a single click?
    Thank You

No eject key on new Macbook Pros...
I guess it depends on you Macbook Pro.  My 15" Macbook Pro (2011) has the eject key to the right of the F12 key far upper right corner of the keyboard.
My wife's 13" Macbook Pro Retina (2013) has a power button there, HOWEVER, Control-Shift-Power does exactly the same as Control-Shift-Eject.  That is to say Control-Shift-Power will turn off the screen.
So assuming you have a power button, use
         Control-Shift-Power
NOTE:  my older 2011 Macbook Pro has a power button in the case, not part of the keyboard, AND Control-Shift-Power also works on my older Macbook Pro to turn off the screen.

I rubbed TrackPad to let MacBook Pro awake. But I was shocked that my screen is mirrored (Look fourth photo). I turned off five times and turned on five times, display appear normal screen size.

  • Replacing macbook pro display

    Hi All,
Have anyone ever replace their macbook pro display? I just want to know how much is it. I have the original macbook pro with 2.33 GHz processor. It seems I have caught the well known smudge issue on the screen. The thing is, the machine still functions well but the smudgy screen is annoying.
Perhaps if changing the screen is too expensive the I might get a new laptop instead, I just don't want to waste a perfectly functioning machine.
    --Thanks in advance

I just want to know how much is it.
Call up an AASP or any vendor that sells Mac computer parts & ask for an estimate. Make sure they include the taxes & labor if you want them to replace the display.

  • MacBook Pro display cracked - what to do?

I've just had my MacBook Pro dropped and now my screen has gone and cracked, leaving me unsure what to do now. Its an early 2011 core i7 model and so any warranties have indeed run out. So I'm wondering what I should do next. I've considered a couple of options the first being paying for a new screen (Just to clarify its not the glass that's cracked but the LCD behind it making it look like it's leaking rainbows) but I'm unsure of what sort of price I'd be looking at, or maybe just buying a refurbished or second hand one from eBay and migrating everything from the old one. Any and all advice would be appreciated and if anyone could give me an idea on screen replacement prices that would be handy.
    Many thanks!

" so any warranties have indeed run out."
Sorry for your loss. Proof of physical damage voids the warranty anyway.
"  couple of options the first being pay"
When you go in, ask for a "Depot Repair" it's a flat rate service for $300. Your store would have to be aware of and offer the service.
    " it's leaking rainbows)"
    Yup that's a cracked LCD.
Here's an exact replacement on Amazon:

The numbers are correct. So if you feel confident eMail me for instructions or use the iFixIt site.
Wow, here's one from NewEgg even cheaper. It's a refurb:

  • Replacement 17" MacBook Pro Display: Report

Yesterday I received a replacement display for my 17" MacbookPro. The new display is near perfect. It replaces one that had unevenness and bleeding around the bottom of the screen. Finally I have a good screen. There was one dead pixel near the bottom left of the screen. Because it is so near the edge there is no use in trying to get another one.

    Hi,
Good news, I am happy for you . I just got my third display, which is as grainy as the second one...
The first display was of very good quality. Unfortunately, after a couple of months, a weird gray stain appeared in the upper part of the display (it looked like an artifact behind the glass). So, I asked for a replacement and was very disappointed by the grainy aspect of the new display. That's when I became aware of the whole issue with MacBook Pro displays...
Do you happen to know what is the manufacturer of your new display? If you could let us know, that may help us in interactions with Apple...
Following the instructions on http://peewaiweb.free.fr/#whatisthisallabout, I was able to determine that my poor display is a Samsung one (LTN170P2). It's pretty easy, you just grab the SwitchResX control panel from http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/DL.shtml, click on "Export DDC" and find the LCD model type in the generated file.
I'd be very interested to hear about people who are happy with their display, so that I can tell Apple Support what brand I would like to get as replacement...
    Cheers,
    Olivier

  • What cable do I need to buy to connect my Macbook Pro (2011) to a VGA screen? I tried the "Mini DisplayPort to VGA", but apparently it doesnt fit the 2011 Pro version...

    As the topic says,
What cable do I need to buy to connect my Macbook Pro (2011) to a VGA screen? I tried the "Mini DisplayPort to VGA", but apparently it doesnt fit the 2011 Pro version...
    Help me out please.

    Yes ... minidisplay
But what I do not like in that picture (my personal view, others may think differently), is that there is much plastic around the connectors where the cable must fit.  You may ot may not be able to get the cable to *fully seat* with the adapter.
Other adapters (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0334087, yes I know this is a DVI) hve no plastic barriers to connections.

  • Using an LCD TV as the Macbook Pro display

    Hey
I am trying to use a Samsung LCD Tv as the display monitor for my 15 in. Macbook Pro display. I have a DVI cord going from my laptop to a DVI-RGB adapter which is plugged into the LCD Tv monitor, but nothing shows up on the tv and the display is still on the laptop. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Assuming your adapter is valid, you try "Detect Displays" in System Prefs/Displays. Some people adjust the OS to show a monitor icon in the menu bar, near the clock, and you can access this from there also. If the Mac still detects no external display, suspect the cabling.
I really question your DVI-RGB adapter, though. That would be highly unusual - are you sure it's not DVI-SVGA, or DVI-component? Do you have the brand and model? I have run my Samsung TV from my MBP just fine with a SVGA cable and DVI-SVGA adapter.

My macbook pro is stuck on grey screen with apple symbol in center with the progress circle under it continusly spinning. After I had turned it on. Prior to turning it on I had to force close and shut down a few hours prior. Please Help I have tried everything I know to do

Unfortunately this means that there is a problem in the boot sector of your hard drive. It might be indicative of a fundamental corruption in the coding that allows your computer to boot your operating system from your hard drive. I had this problem twice and it resulted in me having to get a new hard drive and restore my data.
In other words, your computer can't talk to your operating system so you can't access your data.
Here is my advice: DON'T CALL APPLE TECH SUPPORT though they are kind and usually helpful it will take you an hour just to explain the situation and they will only tell you to do what I'm gonna say here.
First: Shut down your computer completely
Two: boot up while holding down the following keys: command, option, p, and r. The computer will reboot 3 times. This solution will likely fail so if you're frustrated skip to the next step.
Three: Boot up while holding down the option key. Select recovery drive. Select your default language. Select disk utility, click on Macintosh HD, and select "verify and repair volume." Likely the verification will produce some line like "unused node not erased." Or something like that. If anything using the words "node structure" comes up, you need a new hard drive.
If after verification and repairs you still can't boot I sincerely hope you have apple care because you will need a new hard drive. Set up an appointment to come in to the apple store, they will tell you to go and get data recovery, just ask them to give you the old hard drive. Unless you have an up to date backup in which case you can just restore from that. If you're lucky the only issue is with the boot sector which means that if you ask them to give you the old hard drive, you can buy an enclosure and you have effectively been given a free external hard drive. It still works to store data just not to load an operating system.
If you have a back up drive bring it to the apple store and they'll do the whole thing right there, it should take around an hour and a half but may take longer.
Hope this helps, it's annoying but it's your safest bet.
    All the best.
