MacBook Pro doesn't always go to sleep when closing. What can be done?

When closing the lid the Pro doesn't go to sleep on random occasions. This just became a problem. I can plug and unplug the power and it goes to sleep. The sleep mode will also put it to sleep. What can I do?

For:
"Responding to display lid opening and closing on portable Macs".
Rest SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
Best.

  • My 2008 15in macbook pro randomly shuts down while in sleep mode. What can I do?

I have a 2008 15in macbook pro that when it goes to sleep it will randomly shut down. Most times when I try to wake it up from sleep it will just shut itself down as well as when I close and reopen the computer it will just shut down. When I try to turn it back on it generally takes 2 to 3 tries to get it to finally come back on. What should I do? I think it might be a Hard Drive problem. Anything helps!

Hello californiabears and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
    Try resetting SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If you think you have a HD problem look at the HD in System reports:
Apple menu - About this Mac - More Info - System Report - SATA
Under SMART status does say "verified"?
    Otherwise:
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support
Is that the original disk from 2008? If so it's due.

my macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

I'm having the same issue. I've had my logic board replaced twice now, which I did last week and then Monday I had to take it to a Genius Bar again because my hard drive cable was malfunctioning. I don't know why it's happening but I'm really starting to get frustrated with my machine. I bought my MacBook Pro brand new last year in September and ever since I've dropped it in November, it's been really glitchy. After I dropped it, I had to replace my Logic board, graphics card, and hard drive and they covered it.

  • My Macbook Pro (5,3) sporadically goes to sleep when the lid is open and in use.

My Macbook Pro (5,3) sporadically goes to sleep when the lid is open and I am actively using it.  This problem happens both with OS X 10.7.2 and Windows 7 (64bit), so I don't think it's an OS issue.  Has anyone else encountered this? It's still covered under apple care... But I'd rather try to fix it myself before having to bring it in.
    Thanks!

I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case - it does get hot.  However, this happens even when I first open it after having it in sleep mode for an entire night...  Do you know how to run the diag tool with OS X 10.7?

  • How can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

how can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

If the machine is asleep, lid closed, and you plug in to an external monitor and an external USB keyboard, the machine will wake, anbd reconfigure the screen resolution for the external monitor, Once it has made this configuration change, you can open the lid and it will continue to address only the external monitor.  At least that's how my early MacBook Pro unibody 13" works. It seems to run a bit cooler this way. It gets quite toasty with the lid closed while doing anything demanding and you are more likely to hear the fan come on.  I have not seen any temps that would cause alarm, but I do get a high speed (6000 rpm), noisy fan sometimes with the lid closed, .
If you operate in the open-lid, external monitor only mode, if you deactivate the monitor for any reason, when it reactivates it will be running both screens, with all the navigation hassles this entails, so I generally set it not to deactivate the screen when in this mode.
Thus I agree with those who say that some of the cooling air is drawn in around the keyboard, the difference in cooling performance is observable.  If you activate istat pro, get the computer hot running in clamshell mode, and open the lid, you can watch the CPU temp drop by a few degrees C within a couple minutes.  It isn't a huge difference, but enough the lower the fan speeds.

Bought and installed a new battery for my Mac Book Pro 5.1, intel Core 2 dual, the computer makes a lot of engine noise! The noise disappears in sleep mode. What can be done?

I bought it from Other World Computer last week for $95. 3rd party, I suppose.

  • My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do?

My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do? I did install a cannon printer upgrade and security upgrade. Not sure if it was something to do with that. Also I tried the disk utility repair and didn't improve anything. I also reset PRAM and SMC.

    1. Try booting in e Verbose mode - press and hold [cmd] + [v] keys just right after the boot chord sounds till you get a black screen and white letters.
if there are some delays in the boot process  -  you should see where the system is stuck.
this mode is not permanent - the next [re-] boot will be normal.
    2. repair permissions. disk utility does fine. Disk Warrior is better.
sometimes after half done updates (it may happen though should not) there are items that are "belonging to someone else"
    3. try  cache cleaner (or there are some other utilities as well - I just like SlCC  more)  http://www.northernsoftworks.com/snowleopardcachecleaner.html - it's shareware though the basic functionality is free for you to use.
Try caches -> deep cleaning (please read the developers site what it does) and select checkmark at all options - reply yes to the requests and after a reboot the next reboot should be as it is intended.
p.s be sure you do have backup

  • MacBook Pro doesn't wake up from sleep mode

My MacBook Pro (late 2011) with OS Mavericks doesn't wake up from sleep mode anymore. Battery is fully charged and the cable is plugged in. I can still hear the ventilator running, but that's all. I never had any problems, but since about 2 weeks this problem occurs. It usually then woke up after 10-15min, but now nothing happened since 4 hours.
Is there anyone who could possible help me? Unfortunately there is no Apple Store in my area where I could go to.

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please read the whole article carefully (some of it is hidden by disclosure triangles) and don't skip any of the steps, including the ones under the heading "Additional troubleshooting." If you don't understand any of the steps, ask for guidance.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
              Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked
Put hard disks to sleep when possible
    Step 4
This and the next step must be taken as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    Step 5
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • MacBook Pro Doesn't Always Connect to WI-FI Router at Start-Up

I have an internittant problem with my MacBook Pro (8,3 - 2011/Intel Core i7). It's configured with original Airport Extreme card. For the most part, the wireless system runs without a problem. I've always been able to connect to wireless networks at home or when traveling... encrypted or not... no matter. I'm running Lion 10.7.5 and stay current with all software and firmware updates.
A few months ago, I started having an odd problem. At start-up, instead of the wireless connect icon on the top right-hand side of the menu bar showing the full four wave-shaped, black bars as static and solid, indicating the computer is connected to the wireless network, the icon would instead appear to be searching for the network indefinitely -- sometimes showing the telltale exclamation point in its center indicating no connection.
I couldn't understand this given that I'd been using this router without any problem for months. The MBP had logged on to our WPA-encrypted network without any problem.
When I phoned AppleCare, the tech insisted that I was getting interference from other wireless networks in the area and that I should change the channel on the router to a channel well separated from the channels of the other networks nearby. I tried this, and it seemed to help at times, but at other times, not.
As part of this process, the AppleTech asked me to generate a system report from the About This Mac menu, and then click on the Network/Wi-Fi tab to identify the wireless networks in my immediate area and their channels.
Curiously, when this problem occurs again lately, and the MBP cannot connect to our wireless network, I've been generating a system report to see where the interference may be coming from. When I click the Network/Wi-Fi tab, I see our network -- let's call it "Fred" listed not just once... but twice. The real Fred network that actually works is listed under "Other Local Wi-Fi Networks". The second Fred network, to which my MBP is trying to connect, is listed under "Current Network Information".
The strange thing is that this second, unusuable network or ghost network (I'm not really sure what it is) has a BSSID of 00:00:00:00:00:00.
When this problem started happening months ago, the only way I knew to solve the problem was to keep restarting the computer until I finally booted into the right network (after logging into my usual user profile).
What I finally figured out (Doh!) is that when this problem does occur, I can simply click on the wireless icon, click Join Other Network, then Show Networks, see a selection window with the real Fred network, click on it and in a moment I'm connected to the real Fred wireless network and ready to go. It's an easy, simple workaround, but I'm concerned about why I'm seeing this "ghost" network of Fred with the BSSID of 00:00:00:00:00:00. Is this some indication of hacking or foul play or someone trying to tap into our network or computers? -- either locally or via the web?
Curiously, I notice this only occurs when I use my usual non-admin ID, which is the one I use to surf the net and send/receive emails for all the obvious reasons -- specifically, the extra layer of security. But when I occasionally log-on with my admin account, I never have this problem. Is it possible my non-admin account wireless settings have been corrupted or compromised in some way?
How do I solve this problem?

Try the basics first (some of which you have already tried):
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

  • WHY does my Macbook Pro (mid 2012) always slow to crawl when I wake it up and go online???

I wake up my Macbook Pro (sweetly tell it that I love it)
click on one of the 1-10 tabs I have open in Firefox or Safari
Click on iTunes (open already) to play some tunes
    Wait
Wait while the little ball spins as my browser thinks
    wait a bit more
finally the tab I click on comes to the front, but the page takes 15-60 seconds to load
    I proceed feeling irritated
    A little help?
    Specs:
    15" Mid 2012 Macbook Pro
    2.3ghz Intel Core i7 Processor
    500gb HD
    4gb RAM
    Etc.
    Apps that I am using:
    Safari
    Firefox
    iTunes
    Adobe Illustrator (occasionally)
    Lightroom 4 (occasionally)
Why oh why must my Macbook Pro drive me insane by getting hung up for minutes on end???

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • My mbp doesn't always wake from sleep when I open the lid

    (mbp is recent thunderbolt version)
    TItle says it all really.
Usually I can coax it back from sleep by closing lid and leaving for a minute a few times. Annoying.
Sometimes, briefly pressing the power button seems to give it a jolt and back it comes.
Hopefully this is a software issue and an update will rectify it. Please let me know if this is a hardware problem!
    Thanks

oups .. wrong post. sorry ...

Open Disk Utility and perform a permissions repair on your system disk, as updates and so on can mix the permissions on system files up.
Don't bother about upcoming warnings during that process. It's normal -> http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448
After that, your system should work fine again.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't want to turn on when level

13" MBP 7,1 ... sometimes when I go to turn it on and it's totally flat/level, it won't turn on... but if I tilt it a little bit (lift the front edge up by half an inch), the screen will turn on and I can hear the hard drive start up.. as soon as I put it flat again, the screen blacks out (like it's gone to sleep mode),... touching the mousepad or keys will not turn it back on.  Right now, I've got it on my lap, with the back edge tilted up by an inch or so.. and it's working fine...
Sometimes it will work fine when flat... it's an intermittent (as far as I can tell) issue..
    Any thoughts?

Have you dropped or mishandled the computer? haven't bumped it into anything? Is it new? I would suggest taking it to an Apple store ASAP and having a Genius take a look. Perhaps something inside is loose. Perhaps some wiring is not correct. Just my opinion but that's what I would do. Hope this helps. Does it display the same behavior whether running on battery, or the power adapter?

Try to get into your machine and if you do, the first thing you dois
backup your files to a external drive. (not TimeMachine) viaregular
    drag and drop methods.
Disconnect this drive. and all others.
Repair Permissions /Drive from the installer disk
You can then c boot off the installer disk for your OS versionand
under the Utilities menu is Disk Utility > Repair Disk and
    Repair Permissions.
Any warnings related to Disk Repair that are not repaired
    is a sign of trouble.
This one about permissions you can ignore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
    Reinstall OS X
Also you can reinstall just OS X itself while c booted off the
installer disk, shouldn't effect your programs or files
(but backup all files just in case)
Hold off Software updating until your third party software
has a update to work with the current OS X version.
    OnyX clean and check
You can download and run ALL the cleaning and maintenance
aspects of the free OnyX and reboot here:
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Also use OnyX Verify > Preferences (check to show onlycorrupt)
plist files, write them down and find them and move them to your
desktop and reboot, they will be rebuilt. If everything is finethen
delete the old plists and set your preferences again.
    Most drastic method
If that don't work, c boot off the installer disk again, thistime
use Disk Utility to Erase >format HFS+ Journaled with Security
option > Zero All Data (will take some time) This will totally
wipe the drive of everything and is a last ditch effort.
When it's done quit, and reinstall OS X.
You'll have to go through the setup and reinstall your programs
and files from backup. Secret is use the same user name and
drive name as the previous time so your iTunes folder will work
    without a hitch.
If you restore from TimeMachine, it's possible whatever problem
you had can return, but you can try and if it doesn't work, just
    repeat above without TimeMachine.
    Clone your boot drive
Later look at free/donationware Carbon Copy Clone your boot
drive to a external HFS+ Journaled formatted drive (in DiskUtility)
and keep in a safe place, it hold option bootable, reverseclone
great if your hard drive bites it, or TimeMachine gets hosed.
    TM isn't bootable.
