Macbook Pro doesn't go into sleep mode when battery dies. Help Please!

Question

When ever my Macbook Pro gets low on battery power I receive the "battery is low message" and instead of just going to sleep a couple minutes later it just shuts down completely. Any reason for this?? I want it to go to sleep like it used to when the battery gets low/dead.
