MacBook Pro doesn't go to sleep

Hello,
Since I installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (clean install) my MacBook Pro never goes to sleep alone. If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu or if I close down the monitor it goes normally to sleep but if I leave it on, it never goes to sleep (with Leopard I didn't have any problem).
I tried to turn off WiFi and Bluetooth connection, checked the Power Setting options when MBP isn't attached to power supply but simply it stand up ever, just the monitor goes to sleep but not the mac.
The only thing I can guess can be useful for understand the cause of the problem is my hard disk: I've changed it from the 120 GB original one with this one: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=482 (model: WD3200BEKT).
Can someone help me?
Thanks and best regards

Hi, My new Macbook pro (10.6.4, 13") has exactly problem with your Mac, whatever I do, it just doesn't sleep base on energy saver (as you said" if leave it on, the mac never goes to sleep, just the display goes to sleep), but if i select sleep from the apple menu or close down the lid, both of the Mac or display goest to sleep.
I called Apple expert, but the problem is still here. I just bought it a few days ago, so I can apply a DOA replacement for a new Mac, but I don't know if I should do that, also i am worrying the new mac will still has the same or other problem!
Anyway, i am going to talk to Apple expert today again about this! if you have any news keep me inform,So do I!
I appreciate!

  • MacBook Pro doesn't go into sleep mode after connecting Thunderbolt display

    Hi,
after connecting a Thunderbolt display to the 2011 MacBook Pro 13", the system doesn't stay in sleep mode.
When pressing cmd.alt.eject it goes into sleep for 1 or 2 seconds and then goes back on.
everything works fine otherwise and the MacBook goes to sleep without problems if the Thunderbolt display is not attached.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jordi

    I found the problem.
It turns out that it has nothing to do with the Thunderbolt Display, but with Bluetooth and the Magic Trackpad.
When I installed the TD, I also added a wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad that I had been using with another system.
If the option to allow the system to wake up by Bluetooth devices is enabled (system preferences, Bluetooth, advanced), the MacBook Pro will go to sleep and immediately wake up.
Simply disabled that option and everything works fine.
Now I need to open the lid of the MBP to wake up the system. Kind of a huge power button :-)
    Thanks for your help!

  • Macbook pro doesn't go to sleep when screen lid is shut

Hi, I've got macbook pro late 2008 model with glass trackpad. When i got it was working fine and everytime i shut the screen lid, it would goto sleep like normal macbook pro does. Recently its not going to sleep at all. I've to put it sleep to by clicking apple logo on the corner and then choosing sleep. I know its a minor thing but I want to fix it. I bought a new charger sometime ago but that doesn't seems to be doing anything to macbook pro or does it?
    Thanks

I've tried SMC reset and nothing happened and PRAM reset says you shouldn't do it unless you've a problems with audio, screen and one more.
Is it safe to perform PRAM reset? I mean it wouldn't crash anything or something. Sorry kind of new here

  • Macbook pro doesn't go to sleep when I close screen

Okay so, I don't know exactly since when this started occurring, but whenever I close the screen of my macbook pro, it looks like it goes to sleep. but it doesn't. then when I open it back up, the fan goes up to 100% and the macbook is all warm and whatnot. Basically what I think, is that it doesn't actually go to sleep. maybe this has to do with the powernap function?
I don't really have any other problems afaik.
    anyone else has this?

If you have issues like that (my MAcBook did not want to go to sleep while it was connected to power...)
what you can always do is power up the 'Terminal' and then punch in  'pmset -g assertions'. That's shoing you which application is holdng your mac back from sleep.
More details about how to use 'pmset' HERE.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't want to sleep - EVER

My soooo out of warrenty MacBook Pro (mid-2010 OSX 10.9.1) has stopped going to sleep altogether. It does not go to sleep when you close the lid or when you go to the apple menu and press sleep, you can still hear the fans running all the time. I noticed this as I fully charged the battery, put it to sleep and then went to use it again later in the evening to find it has no battery left. The display and keyboard lights both go off when its closed or put into sleep manually but the indicator light on the front is always solid white and the fan constantly runs.  I have also tried resetting the SMC to no avail, have checked and restored my energy preferences to default, i have also disabled the wake on bluetooth and Internet options but still it will not sleep.
There is a lot of confusing information regarding this online and now i feel i am going round in circles!
Any help would be greatfully apperciated!

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer  will not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 5
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 6
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 7
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't go to sleep automatically!

Very strange. My Macbook Pro mid-2010 won't go to sleep automatically. Closing the lid puts it to sleep, forcing it to sleep works. But setting it up in the Energy Saver Preferecnes to go to sleep during inactivity doesnt work. Have this problem since I can remember. Just reset my entire Harddrive and reinstalled Snow Leopard, for other reasons though. I thought it would work now, as any processes that might keep my Macbook running might have been deleted in the process. I'm kind of desperate to get this fixed.

You should try to update your OS to 10.6.7.
If it won't work, I'd suggest reset SMC ( Shutdown your MB Pro, let the Power Adapter connected to a known-good power source, and press Shift -Control - Option - Power button, at the same time.)
After that, turn on your computer and try it

  • MacBook Pro doesn't go to sleep by itself

    So here's my problem.
I can put my MBP asleep via the apple menu just fine, and also if I close the lid it goes to sleep without a problem. However, if I left it inactive for the 5 minutes I have set in the energy settings it doesn't go to sleep. This started happening when I installed Leopard (fresh install, then migration assist).
I've found some people having same issues and resolving them by resetting the SMC. For me it didn't work. Has anyone suffered from the same issue?

Same here! My MBP is brand new (less than month). It is set to go to sleep after 5 minutes and the hard discs are to go to sleep whenever possible. I have bluetooth turned off and the only program running is Firefox.
But if I walk away from the computer without closing it, the battery will completely drain.
I know that my mother's G4 can be left open with no problem, so I don't get it.
    Any ideas out there?

  • My macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

my macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

I'm having the same issue. I've had my logic board replaced twice now, which I did last week and then Monday I had to take it to a Genius Bar again because my hard drive cable was malfunctioning. I don't know why it's happening but I'm really starting to get frustrated with my machine. I bought my MacBook Pro brand new last year in September and ever since I've dropped it in November, it's been really glitchy. After I dropped it, I had to replace my Logic board, graphics card, and hard drive and they covered it.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't always go to sleep when closing. What can be done?

When closing the lid the Pro doesn't go to sleep on random occasions. This just became a problem. I can plug and unplug the power and it goes to sleep. The sleep mode will also put it to sleep. What can I do?

    For:
"Responding to display lid opening and closing on portable Macs".
    Rest SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    Best.

My OS Lion Macbook Pro keeps randomly going to sleep.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern. It looks like I may have to get it repaired?

No I didn't do anything like that, but...
    I've found a pattern/cause!
It's every time I open the app store. Why on earth would that be?

  • MacBook Pro does not go to sleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep by itself any longer. I can put it to sleep manually and it sleeps and wakes up fine.
But if the energy saver control panel is set to put it to sleep after x minutes it doesn't do so. It turns off the screen but doesn't go to sleep.
I have already trashed the Power Management preferences but that did not help.
    Any more ideas?

Thanks for the help so far.
No applications running, it doesn't even fall asleep after a restart with nothing open.
Yes, the light comes on and stays on. If it's asleep (which I can still get it to do manually or by closing the lid) then the light pulses. I can distinguish between those two states.
    Has anyone got other ideas?
    Best

  • PLEASE HELP! My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep on its own any more. Currently, my Energy saver is set so that the display falls asleep after 1 minute, and the computer itself, after 3 minutes. Even if I don't have any softwares running, or anything else, it doens't fall asleep. Please give me some suggestion about what to do about this! (or would I need to take it to a shop? ... )

Well, since the machine does properly sleep when the lid is closed, my guess would be that you have a software conflict and not a hardware problem. Since your are up to date, have repaired permissions, and can't remember anything else that may have changed, it could be difficult to track down the culprit.
One thing you can try, it takes a bit of work but will help show if software is the real problem. You could create a new user account, and don't install anything new in it. Log in as the new user, and see if sleep works there. Often as you use your main user profile, you accumulate software programs and utilities, and sometimes then can conflict with one another. If you create a fresh user account, often it will not have the same software conflict.
If the new account sleeps normally, then you can assume that you have a software conflict somewhere, and you should think through what you have installed. If the new user account has the same problem, my guess would be that something is out of whack with the OS, and you need to decide if a full system reinstall is worth it (that is a big decisions, don't just jump into it).
Regardless of the outcome, after you have used the second account for a test, you can simply delete it.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

I am having the same issue. I hook it up to the charger in the evening and close the lid. When I go to use it the next time it takes a good 30 seconds or so to wake up. The screen shows the log in screen but typing doesn't work and the cursor is frozen. Sometimes it will even give the rainbow wheel for the cursor, so it seem like it is processing whatever to get going. I also notice that my battery won't be fully charged at anywhere from 95%-99% after being charged a full evening. What can I do to change whatever is happening because it is pretty crappy to charge it all night expecting to have a full battery for the next use, plus the issue of having to sit there waiting for it to boot every time.

  • My macbook pro won't go to sleep when I close the lid

I've been having this problem for a couple of years now, and it's getting pretty annoying.
I got this MacBook Pro in April of 2011. Otherwise, it works great. It goes to sleep when I go up to the apple menu and select "sleep." BUT, when I close the lid, it stays on. Heaven forbid I don't have it plugged in, because then the battery will be shot! It also won't go to sleep automatically when I leave it for a long time. Yet another potential battery drain.
How do I fix it so that it goes to sleep automatically when I close the lid and when I leave it alone for a while?
In Energy Saver, I have checked all the boxes necessary: "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" "Wake for network access" and "Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep."
Am I missing something here, or does my computer just have a defect?

    I had the same issue.
I used an external monitor but all of a sudden when I closed the lid my Macbook Pro did not go to sleep!
I solved the problem with a SMC reset.
    Try to do it...
