MacBook Pro doesn't hibernate when runs out of battery

Dear all,
I've been experiencyng this issue for quite a while now and is very frustrating. My MacBook Pro (Early 2011) doens't go to sleep as it should when runs out of battery. It simply dies. This is not a continuous issues as it happens 1/2 oh the times that battery runs out and I cannot connect it to power (low battery warning is also working perfectly).
Mac is stock besides HDD (now SSD) and RAMs. Battery stock as well and loks good in sysinfo (attached):

It doesn't at all appear to be a HW issues, as batteries behaves normally and system sleeps corretcly at times. Indeed, seems to be a software issue as also running a pm set command in terminal after mac died returned this result:

It seems that Address book service prevents system from sleeping.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi all,
Thnk you for the reply.
@andyBall: I though that the battery might run out sooner than what it reports, however it typically behaves behaves quite well - 5+ hours after fully charged and approximately 10 minutes of operation after low battery warning. Very hard that battery is running out before the system realize that. Yet I have to try the SMC reset. Will revert.
@SilverSkyRat: I have one iCloud and one Gmail for work. Today I have disabled both and OS hibernated well (no failure). Later in the day I reactivated Gmail and system still hibernated fine. I mainly use the Mac for work therefore it's rather difficult to perform continus test of this kind. Although, system somtimes hibernates fine with also all account active.
General question, which are the program associated with "Address Book Source Sync"? Only "Contacts"?
Also, I have Little Snitch on the computer, may this be anyhow linked with this issue in your opinion/experience?
Best regards,
Alex

  • MacBook doesn't go to sleep when running out of battery

Hi. I'm having really bad luck with MacBooks lately.
    First MacBook had a faulty webcam;
    Second had a faulty Bluetooth;
...and now I've invested in the most expensive MacBook model available, the black one, and I'm having trouble with the battery. Here is the problem:
The battery shows a warning when it reaches 15% but... when it reaches 0% it won't go to sleep but instead just shuts down and I lose everything I'm doing.
I have an old iBook G4 that doesn't behave like that and even the previous faulty MacBooks would just go to sleep.
Is there something I need to enable?
The machine is fully updated, including the battery update. The battery was fully charged only 4 times and seems to be working perfectly. It looks like an OS issue really.
    Suggestions?

I had a similar problem - my macbook was shutting down at 30% or less battery charge, when under battery power...without any low battery warning or going to sleep like it should. It was also not waking up from sleep properly.
applestore diagnosed it as a battery problem. Apple has admitted they are having issues with the macbook batteries. They replaced the battery with a brand new one, and updated me with the battery firmware update released friday on software update. Free of charge, as it is under warranty still. Plus, they have extended warranties on batteries for 2 years instead of one (even if your original warranty has run out!)
So far, so good. No more sudden shutdowns at 30% battery power or less. Battery drains, gives you the normal "low battery" alert, then goes to sleep on its own as expected without powering off. No problems waking up from sleep. Battery time also seems to be noticeably longer.
I recommend anyone with battery shutdown problem (or other battery problems) to visit applestore and get their battery replaced ASAP. Seems to have worked here.
    Hope this helps!

  • How do I stop my MacBook Pro getting so hot when running VMWare?

    I've a late 2011 MacBook Pro, i7, 8Gb.
It seems it doesn't take much to start the fans whirring - which has been the same since day one.
However, what really does send it into meltdown, is VMWare. I sometimes run Windows 7 on VMWare & am very concerned about the heat and noise generated.
I'm willing to take a hit on speed if there's a way to cool things down - any ideas?

    Hey there!! Same problem here..
__My MacBook pro will not stay off when i plug it in. When i attach the power adapter even when the screen is shut the start sound comes on and it powers up__(TAYLOR SAIDS)
The white sleep light flashes 6 times and start without sound start ...
For the second time makes reboot and then heard the sound start!!!!####
    please help and thanks

  • My macbook pro gets very hot when running anything like games or videos

I just bought a macbook pro 2.3 GHZ i7 with retina display.  It gets very hot when running just about anything of substance.  When I run a game like candy crush, the temperature can get to 167 or more.  I installed istat menus and started monitoring it.  I did notice that the fans never went on but after istats I was able to make them come on.  Without having a game going, the temperatures hover around 100.  Once the game starts, it goes crazy.
I don't really know what the problem could be or if this is normal (it really can't be....This is way too hot).  I have owned the computer for about 2 months and I need to know what to do.

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • Brand new macbook pro retina - fan noise when running hola?

Hi everyone, I need some help here please!
I have a brand new macbook pro retina 13 - just bought in January this year - and have had no problems so far apart from the wifi dropping occassionally.
So I just downloaded hola unblocker for firefox but whenever I stream anything using it on netflix my fan starts whirring so loudly - it's never even made a noise before! and I can feel the base of the mac getting hotter. So I've closed hola/firefox and it stops after a minute or so. I've tried a few times again with the same problem.
I'm just using it to watch US netflix so probably not technically legal anyway.... but other friends manage it no bother - do mac's just know I'm doing something wrong? haha
    Thanks for any advice.

Try running Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder). Click the Energy button at the top and then stream a video. Watch the Energy Impact.
I suspect what you'll see is that your rMBP is doing a lot of work while you're streaming the video, and that makes it get hot. The fan struggles to dissipate the resulting heat in order to prevent damage and makes noise in the process.
It may also have a guilty conscience.

  • My macbook pro inform that i am running out of disk space. However, I am unable to secure delete those files that are in Trash. Many files in Trash are "locked". how do I secure delete these files in trash

I am unable to secure delete those files in the Trash. Many files are marked as "locked" Is this way I cannot secure delete these files?

Can you not just select them and remove the locked flag?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro sometimes restores its RAM when I open it, even though it did not run out of battery?

Sometimes when I open my MacBook Pro, it restores its RAM, as if it has run out of battery, even though it has not run out of battery and it has been charging. Why does this happen, and should it be happening?

It's similar to hybernation mode in Windows.
If you put your laptop to sleep, after X amount of hours it will move to the "deeper" sleep level (save memory to disk and shut down...), to save up battery.
Otherwise if you left your laptop asleep in the evening, you could wake up to a dead battery. Not a great surprise when you in hurry to leave the house with your laptop...

  • When my MacBook Pro i7 runs out of battery, it powers off.

I can't seem to figure out why my new macbook pro turns off when it runs out of battery. Typically, when macs run out of battery, they go into sleep mode. However mine skips this completely and just turns off. Any similar problems? any ideas?

I have an update regarding this issue. Since receiving my new MacBook Pro, I have calibrated the battery 3 times. Here are my findings of each calibration when the battery reaches 0% charge:
1st calibration: MacBook Pro enters SafeSleep (saving contents of memory to HD) and powers down (no pulsating light indicating memory is still being maintained until plugged-in or battery reserves are depleted). Plugging adapter in and powering up results in memory being restored from HD.
2nd calibration: Same as 1st calibration
3rd calibration: MacBook Pro shuts down without entering SafeSleep. Plugging adapter in and powering up results in normal boot sequence with logs indicating improper shutdown.
SMC and PRAM have been reset prior to these calibrations.
pmset -g returns the following (looks normal to me):
    Active Profiles:
    Battery Power 1
    AC Power -1*
    Currently in use:
    womp 1
    halfdim 1
    sms 1
    hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
    gpuswitch 2
    disksleep 10
    sleep 0
    hibernatemode 3
    ttyskeepawake 1
    displaysleep 10
    acwake 0
    lidwake 1
I don't think this is the intended behavior for this MacBook Pro. I've started a case with AppleCare and I hope an engineer will respond to what I'm experiencing as I don't think this is normal. It appears that the MacBook Pro is not accurately determining the bottom threshold of the battery. It thinks there are reserves when there is actually none, causing weird behavior at the end of the battery charge life.
Anybody else experiencing this with their MacBook Pro 15" i7?
Will update as soon as I find out more.

  • My macbook pro doesn't turn and has a black screen.  Fan is running though. Does anyone know what to do?

Does anyone have any advise when a Macbook Pro doesn't boot and has a blank screen?  The fan is running but there are no backlights working.

Depending on your model MBP, see Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008
If you are under warranty and/or have AC, give them a call.
Out of warranty, take your MBP to your local AS and/or AASP.

    /usr/sbin/sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
/sbin/ipfw add 100 divert natd ip from any to any via $gwdev
    /usr/sbin/natd -interface $gwdev -use_sockets -same_ports -unregistered_only -dynamic -clamp_mss -enable_natportmap -natportmap_interface $targetdev
