Macbook Pro doesn't seem to read Dual Layer DVDs

I was trying to restore my laptop using the original restore/install dvds that came with it. When I slip the installation discs into the optical drive, my Mac doesn't seem to read them; it just ejects them.
But I tried inserting audio CDs, data DVDs (4GB max in size) and they seem to work and recognized by my mac. My mac doesn't recognize the installation discs only. I have even went the extra mile of purchasing another Snow Leopard installation disc and the disc, which is sealed, new and fresh from the store also got ejected by the machine. I have read somewhere that the installation discs are Dual Layer DVDs. Seems like my optical drive is not reading dual layers discs anymore.
Any advice how I can mitigate this? Are there any firmware updates that I can upgrade or downgrade to? How will I know which firmware my optical drive is running on?
Thanks!

You can reset the SMC and see if that helps. If it's a unibody or Retina, follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

Are you not able to start aperture on your old macbook? If you are able to then you can retrieve your serial number by clicking on 'about aperture'
If not then it's a call to apple as the above posts suggest. I did when I lost mine, bear in mind though, they may ask for your original receipt as they did with me and I had to fax it.

  • IBook read dual-layer DVDs?

Does anyone know if the iBook G4 1ghz or higher can read dual-layer DVDs? Thanks.

Do you mean home made dual later DVD-Rs or commercially pressed DVD movies that are dual layered? The answer to both should be "yes". However, the software used to burn a home made dual layer DVD-R may or may not be compatible with a Mac...

  • Read Dual Layer DVDs in Mac Mini 2005

My brother has a Mac Mini that he bought in late 2005.
Can he read dual layer DVDs in this optical drive? More specifically, can he use Handbrake to rip dual layer DVDs on this Mac Mini?

Might be my ignorance speaking here, but this is the first I've ever heard of a drive that won't read a dual-layer disc. The vast majority of commercial DVD movies are in DVD9 (DL) format, and I'd be beyond surprised if your iBook wasn't able to play any of them...
I don't have my iBook yet, but I'd guess the combo drive in my Mini is the same, and I've yet to find any DVDs that won't play...

  • Problem with reading Dual Layer DVDs.

I've a normal iBook G4 with a combo drive (it's the 1 Ghz model) and when I insert a dual layer dvd which I've made on another computer at school, the drive in my iBook won't read it (as in it spits it out). I was wondering if this problem extends to everyone else with a similar model/drive.
The media I used is a TDK DVD+R dual layer disc. The drive has had a problem reading a dual layered DVD-R; the problem being that it could only read (possibly) only one layer of the disc.
Is there a firmware update that can applied to rectify the problem?

Hi and thanks for your reply.
I'm actually not sure if I can read commerical dual layer DVDs, but the fact that the DVD was pressed and not burnt, and that the DVD is released for commercial purchase has lead me to believe that my drive can read the DVDs.
Also backing up my drive's ability to read dual layer DVDs, as mentioned in my previous post, is that it could read parts of a DVD-R dual layer DVD. What I meant by parts, or, just one of the two layers, is that the dvd contains a folder which houses 4 gigabytes of data, or about half the DVD. The contents within this folder can be copied to the hard drive, whereas the content on the root of the DVD can not, causing the drive to continually spin the disc, making the "trying really hard to read" noise, forcing me to restart the computer whilst holding the mouse button in order to get the dvd out.

  • Can iMac read Dual Layer DVD+R???

If I use Toast to backup my G5 tower data onto a Dual Layer DVD+R disc, will my iMac Flat Panel be able to read it? I've heard that some older drives can't recognize the Dual Layer DVD+Rs.
Anyone tried a home made dual layer disc on this model iMac yet?

These are the formats supported in the iMac G4.

  • My Brand NEW Macbook pro doesn't seem brand new?!

Hi everyone! I've just received my macbook pro 15" and the condition is concerning me. First of all, there weren't any packaging inside the black box it came with. I opened the black box and there's my laptop. Did you receive your macbook like this too? and the lid doesn't close evenly. The right side starting from front to the back is definitely higher than the left side. Is there any way to verify that this is brand new and not a refurbrished? Thanks so much!

Talk to Apple Care 1 800 275 2273 right away or to Sales Support.
Mine arrived in a brown generic carton box in which the actuall MBP box was padded. Then in the MBP box, there are a top and bottom foam layers and the laptop is in a sleeve sealed with a very thin easy to rip sticker indicator of tampering and when opening the lid you should have found another layer to protect the screen from the keyboard when the lid is closed.

  • My Macbook Pro doesn't seem to 'roar' with Lion

    Hi.
So, I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2009) which came med Snow Leopard. A couple of weeks ago I updated to Lion because I noticed that still more software requested OS 10.7 (Lion). I did everything the way Apple Support Documents told me to and the installment went smooth.
    However,
Besides my Mac is a little slower (I guess due to the new graphic effects in the OS), Safari webbrowser runs REALLY SLOW!
Like, my Mac gets USELESS as soon as I open 3-4 tabs because content load really slow.
I've also noticed that my Mac gets really (really!!) warm whenever I run too much content with Flash.
Can anyone please help me out here ? I've already done the whole 'disk-utility'-thing. Do I need to do a clean install of Lion, or would it be better if I just went back to Snow Leopard ?

First of all do not turn Off Akamai.
Kill the flash webkit process in Activity Monitor by choosing the red Quit icon, then force quit.
Update Safari via Software Update from the Apple menu in the top right of your screen.
    Restart your computer.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't boot (Kernel Panic), even CD/DVD doesn't work anymore

It is a very long story how I came to the point I am at right now, so I'll try to keep it really short:
My MPR stops booting and shows that Kernel Panic message (30s after starting the boot procedure with the grey screen and Apple logo), telling me to reboot. It even does not boot from CD/DVD anymore. Zapping PRAM doesn't help. Booting into Safe Mode doesnt work. Booting into Single User Mode and repairing the drive (/sbin/fsck -fy) did help a couple of times; scanning the system with Onyx and removing faulty preferences even helped a lot as well, everything seemed to work fine. But after the next system crash (happened during memtest procedure), I had the same problem again, this time even Single User Mode doesnt help. Booting from external FW-drive doesnt work. Every time: Kernel Panic.
Since I put in 4GB RAM four weeks ago (without any problems until last week), I replaced the new RAM with the old RAM. Still: Kernel Panic.
How I ran into the whole trouble? I replaced the original internal drive with a new 500GB WD drive. Now problems, until I accidently wiped the whole drive with BootCamp assistant.
At some point, I managed to boot from CD/DVD and (deep-)clean / format the whole internal disk, reinstalled 10.5.4, imported the settings and software from my old internal disk, and maybe f*ed everything up again by doing so. ONYX helped me to isolate a couple of preferences that went bad after that import, and after deleting them, everything seemed to be alright, especially after updating to 10.5.6. Until the system crashed next time, during a memtest. Memory seems to be ok though; as I already said, swapping it against the old RAM doesnt change anything, and TechTool didnt find anything. HD seems to be ok as well, neither Disk Utility nor ONYX nor TechTool did find any hardware fault.
After every crash so far, pcscd.pub was corrupted, with 17 instead of 16 blocks (Single User Mode fsck -fy fixed that), which is more than strange since I don't use any smart card stuff which that file is used for.
Now, even fixing that file doesnt help anymore.
Verbose mode shows that the boot process stops right after

    Feb 15 18:0046 localhost mDNSResponder-176.3 (Sep 30 2008 16:59:38)[56]: starting
    AirPort: Link Down on en1
It could be interesting to put back in the old internal drive, but I'd like to avoid that at almost any cost since putting back the cases lid was such a p. i. t. a. It doesnt seem to be necessary as the drive itself seems to be ok technically.
The thing that amazes me most is the fact that I can't boot neither from CD/DVD nor from external FW-drive(s) anymore.
Now I'm sitting here with a beautiful 2,5k$ brick and I'm wondering if anybody has a clue what I could do or who to ask (Apple Care won't be available before tomorrow). Thanks a lot in advance!

Alright, "Signal 4" means "illegal instruction", as "info signal" shows.
Rebooting in Single User Mode and doing another fsck -fy shows that everything is as before: a damaged pcscd.pub (incorrect block count) and a "succesful repair" with "FILESYSTEM MODIFIED". Exiting Single User Mode and continuing boot up works this time . Very strange. Verifying the volume using Disk Utility: everything is ok; some of the rights were corrupted though (in detail:
    Die Zugriffsrechte unterscheiden sich für Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/ALRHelperJobs, Soll-Wert: drwxrwxr-x , Ist-Wert: drwxr-xr-x .

    Die Zugriffsrechte unterscheiden sich für Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls, Soll-Wert: drwxrwxr-x , Ist-Wert: drwxr-xr-x .),
but repaired without problems. BTW, "Die Zugriffsrechte unterscheiden sich für..." means "Access rights differ...", "Soll-Wert" means "reference value", "Ist-Wert" means "actual value".
Testing CPU, RAM, video RAM and USB using TechTool Deluxe: everything is ok.

  • Matshita UJ-825 - Unable to read dual layer DVD+R

Haven't had any issues with my Matshita UJ-825 until now. Have a DVD+R DL full of photos, but the Matshita will not mount it. When I insert the DVD it sounds like the drive is working to mount it and then just spits the DVD back out. What's really strange, a co-worker has the same UJ-825 in a 12" Powerbook and he can mount the DVD, no problem. The only difference is his UJ-825 has firmware revision DAM5. Here's the specs under "System Profiler" for my drive:
    Firmware Revision: DBN7
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes

    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes

I've read through A LOT of discussions similar to my problem, but none seem to have any answer. Thought I might try my luck. Any help is appreciated!

I understand some people think "googling" is the end-all solution to finding resolution on certain issues. But, I wouldn't have posted here if I hadn't tried searching on Google to begin with.
On that note, does anybody have other ideas beside searching Google?
I know that Matshita is a part of Panasonic, but a search there turned up nil, as well.
Anybody know if it's possible to copy the firmware from one Matshita and then somehow flash another Matshita with that firmware?

  • Problems with dual layer DVD reading MBPro (2009)

    Hello,
recently i wanted to take a look at a dvd that came with a magazine (for pcs, but that shouldn´t really matter here) on my macbook pro from mid 2009 (see http://support.apple.com/kb/SP541) with the latest version of osx.
Unfortunately, it didn´t succeed to read the dvd. only ejected it after doing a little searching and making strange noises.
According to the technical specifications this macbook pro should be able to at least read dual layer dvds. I won´t even try to burn one of those, because after doing a little research on the www i found a lot of entries with people going insane with the burning capabilities of macs concerning dual layer media.
Unfortunately i couldn´t find anything on the topic in the forums here. Also no official statement whether macs can or cannot cope with dl media. In my opinion, if it´s specified in the tech specs, then the computer should also live up to the expectations.
Are there any suggestions on how to go about with the matter of dl media and macs? Any information would be much appreciated. Also a notice from apple would be nice, this seems to be a matter (given, although probably not of top priority) concerning quite a lot of people and machines.
    kind regards,
    Reinhard Sommerer

    Hello again,
well - thanks for the information. i would like to point out that the dvd i was trying to use was not for burning purposes. it was a medium that came with a magazine. out of my experience sometimes these work even better than home-burnt dvds, but that might be subjective.
anyway, tonight i gave it another try with the cleansed medium. apx. in the same condition as last time (had stored it in a safe place) and big surprise: this time it didn´t read neither side again. kind of a drawback - maybe tomorrow i´ll have more luck again.
so my hopes for an apple official to comment on this forum won´t be heard, i guess. although it appeared to me that last time here i had seen a user profile resembling an official apple profile. but i might be wrong, i´ll just keep on wondering about this so-called dl-drive.
    kind regards,
    reinhard

  • Leopard Dual Layer DVD, Macbook drive

Well i'm planning upon purchasing leopard but i was wondering, does the 13inch macbook 1.8ghz model have a DVD reader capable of reading dual layer DVDs? I was wondering because i've noticed its called a Combo drive. Also when i bought my macbook, it came with tiger install DVDs, single layer, two of them. Anyone whos been able to install leopard on their macbook 13inch 1.8ghz proccessor, it would be great if you could just post a reply saying it works. I cant wait to order

Thanks for the reply, but the only thing that makes me think now is, my drive cant burn DVDs, however it can read them, i suppose i only have to find one of my old windows DL DVDs and just try mounting them,
    Thanks
