Macbook Pro doubt!

Hello everyone, I recently bought this computer on the Apple Store:

MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen display
Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel)
My objective is to start university next year and it's required for me to use mostly Adobe Programs so I bought the CS5 Master Collection.
I know that some students computer's kept crashing because they couldn't support those heavy programs.
I don't want that to happen so I would like to know if my purchase is enough to manage all those programs smoothly.

Given that you first stated "I will be also using Microsoft office 2010 and Microsoft Project" and then later asked "Are there any applications on the Mac that could just open a .mpp file in read only?" I will try to address the options you might have for both: using and just reading MS Project (mpp files) on you MBP.
You could get Parallels Desktop for Mac (http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/), install a virtual MS Windows machine and then install MS Project. I think this would be a pretty cool setup. Go the Parallels site, there is plenty of info / documentation there, also trial download. Given you 8GB RAM, high-end processor, SSD, and if Parallels lives up to their claims, then you would have one sweet, multi-os, cross-platform access to files, high-end computing environment. The thing I like about VMs is that if you don't need one, you can just get rid of it. They also allow you to set up multiple configurations of OS / Apps, which can make for great multi-use and test environments. And, all the time, just running nice and smoothly "in parallel" with the Mac (I am basing that on what Parallels states, not actual experience, but this would be one of the first apps I would choose for anew MBP, based on my use).
There is also, iTaskX (the project management powerhouse for macs - http://www.itaskx.com/software/en/iTaskX2_info.asp). Essentially, this product is designed to be the MS Project replacement for macs. Google for reviews, some say it is, others say it is not quite as robust. Either way, it still looks pretty handy and you can view screenshots, and product video on the site. If you wanted something like this, the nice thing is that "iTaskX offers a high degree of compatibility, letting you easily exchange your documents over Industry-Standard formats like MS Project MPP (read), MS Project XML or MS Project MPX." The key point there being the "MPP (read)" you were looking for. Also, current version is supposedly compatible with MS Project 2010, which seems not to limit the experience. They also have an evaluation license you can get to try it out.
Then, there is Steelray Project Viewer (http://www.steelray.com/spv_2010.html), which claims to be "The Only Viewer That Suppports Microsoft Project 2010". Maybe they don't count iTaskX as just a project viewer since it is also more than that, in which case, and in lieu of further searching, seems correct. They also have demos and tutorials and a free trial.
So, I am not sure exactly what you need / want, but there are three options to investigate. If you have the time, could try all them out and see what works for you.
To me, if they deliver as stated, they all seem reasonably priced for what they do. I don't currently use MS Project but did intensely at one time. Only advice I can give there is - use versioning and backup - I just recall how time consuming was to recreate a previous version of a project or start from scratch when something did not work right. I doubt this has changed. Would really love to hear how any of these work out. In particular, if you try the Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Doubts about New Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro last december the latest offering by apple its been a month now, just after a month old now I installed steam on my Mac to play dota and my mac was getting stuck so i decided to restart it but then my Mac was stuck on a white screen with a spinning circle for about 10 mins never happened before. Then finally I had to hold the power button to shut it off! It hurted me real bad to do that! Right now I'm scared investing money in such a great machine but such problems just scares me off! please advice me the best! and also how can I check if my machine is performing well or not! and do you advice me to use a screen protector for the retina display will the use of screen protector reduce the advantage of the retina display. And during the game play a sound from the hardware bay was suddenly loud for which I have never heard may be it was performing faster, this is my first mac and need assistance as much as possible

Your macbook is not an idealized gaming machine, that much is fairly well established
Youre trying to play STEAM games and graphics intensive reality games.
The question is, how does your Macbook work on normal non-game use and applications?
Screen protectors are a bad idea for several reasons. dont use them, dont recommend them, theyre nearly utterly useless.

Doubts about Late 2013 Haswell Macbook Pro with Retina

TL;DR: With its debut of so many new components (Haswell, ac wi-fi, and intel iris pro), is the late 2013 model a truly reliable laptop for 5+ years of use? Or should I buy the early 2013 which has a better history of fewer complaints because it has stuck to and fixed the problems of its predecessor's components.
I'm buying my first Mac Book Pro after in preparation for college (I will be a highschool senior this year):
My decision has come down to two refurbished products: An Early 2013 Retina Mac Book Pro and a Late 2013 Mac Book Pro
My cousin couldn't make up his mind so he accidentally ordered the mid 2012 model, then changed his mind and ordered the early 2013 model, then changed his mind again and decided on the late 2013 model after testing and comparing all 3 along with his 2011 model.

I personally was still torn between early and late 2013 because the late 2013 didnt have a dGPU.
NOW... I've been pretty convinced that the late 2013 is better in almost all aspects EXCEPT... that a quick search of its problems has brought up myriad problems...
Now you are all probably thinking (well of course u dumdum, nobody is going to complain about their mac book being fine); valid point, until my cousin's new late 2013 model started having almost ALL of the problems I researched including: wi-fi problems, constant crashing/screen freezing, rapid battery drain, random computer reboots..
I got a bit worried, so I also searched for early 2013 model problems, and almost nothing came up (in fact i just found late 2013 complaints). SO... I came to the conclusion that the late 2013 truly WAS a problem model given that the early 2013 had MUCH less complaints online, and that my cousin experienced the same problems described in the complaints for the late 2013 model.
NOW... My cousin has decided to replace what he got by returning it and getting another one... This is all nice and dandy except this time around all the problems were lucky to surface before the 14 day return. Most of the complaints described problems surfacing a few MONTHS after, which is wayyyy beyond the 14 day return policy. My cousin then tried to reassure me that no matter what, Apple was reliable and the 1 yr warranty would cover anything. This wasn't very convincing considering what had already occurred and what I had already seen from online complaints.
It wasn't very convincing BECAUSE this late 2013 model incorporated a WHOLE new bunch of new stuff... whereas the early 2013 model seemed to be pretty consistent with predecessors...
I hypothesize that all this NEW entry level stuff (ac wi-fi, intel iris pro, and haswell) is what is causing problems, and that because so many new additions are put together in concert, problems are bound to surface.
The early 2013 model has similar specs to previous models likely because it IMPROVED on the previous models mistakes. The late 2013 model debuted a lot of new things; there was not time to fix anything yet.
SOOOOOOOO... My final conclusion is uncertain... the late 2013 model is clearly designed to be better, but as an early model using so many new things, I can also see it failing a lot when I need it to last 5+ years for college.
NOW... having read my LONG post, please tell me: Early or late 2013?

I thought about doing what you said above, but unfortunately, I didn't have any spare blank DVD's. However, I was able to sucessfully install Windows & on my Mac. What I did was when I got to the error message, I would cancel the installation and that would return me back to the install now window. At that point, I would take out the flash drive and put it into another USB port. It took a few times, but eventually it recognized the drivers and allowed me to install the software. Remember, once you get past that point, the installation will ask you to choose a drive to install Windows on. Highlight the Boot Camp drive and chose "advanced", and then chose "format" after that. After all of this, it should be smooth sailing.

New External Monitor for Logic on MacBook Pro - Suggestions

I'm in the painful process of updating my studio and now my large screen external monitor has started failing.
I know if this a pretty general question more suited to the MacBook Pro forum but I'd like some input from folks used to working with an application like Logic in a home studio environment.
I guess the issue for me is that I'm not getting any younger and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. One of the things specific to Logic and music software in general is that there are LOTS of very detailed dialog boxes with text that is not always height adjustable (yes I know about zooming and indeed I do lots of that but it gets quite distracting). The other factor is that I'm often recording and engineering myself which means I'll be sitting with a guitar in my lap or at a keyboard and can't always lean in too close to the monitor.
I solved this by buying a large 26" Acer which sits on my desk behind the Mackie MCU. To my left I've got the MacBook 15.4" Pro on a keyboard stand above my MIDI controller at a 45 degree angle to the desk.
It's worked quite well until the Acer seems to have become haunted. It will mysteriously reboot itself intermittently, going blank for a second, then showing the Acer logo and going back to picture. It will also turn itself on spontaneously when the computer is off (the status light is off and then turns itself on). It seems to detect when I'm in the middle of a really good session and starts resetting itself every 30 seconds or so. Then it will work fine sometimes for days or weeks at a time. I've checked it on 4 different computers, it malfunctions on all. I believe in may be a problem with one of the capacitors or the inverter, I'm not sure, but it's driving CRAZY at this point.
And of course now it's 3 months out of warranty and may be more expensive to fix than buying a new one.
So my issue is what monitor to replace it with. I've considered buying an Apple monitor, since the display is lovely to look at but there are a couple things that are deal breakers.
It's expensive. Very expensive.
Oddly you have to choose between a 24" and a 30", with nothing in between. Don't want to sound like Goldilocks here, but the 24 is tooooo small and the 30 is tooooo big.
Yeah I know bigger is usually better but since they bumped the native resolution of the 30" up to 2560x1600 it's really sharp but things like the menu text get really quite small. Yes you can reset to a lower non native resolution, but then you loose the sharpness. I tested Logic in the store on the 30" and it did look great but I found I actually had to move my whole body around to see things at the top and bottom of the screen.
Oh and did I mention that it's expensive? Jeez.
The 24" now seems to look a bit small to me after using the same resolution (1920x1200) on the Acer's 26" screen. (Ok, I think it's actually 25.5 but hey that half an inch can make a big difference and I will avoid making any bad jokes here).
And did I mention the Apple monitors are expensive? The 24" is almost 3 times as expensive as a cheaper alternative.
I also still have a PC here that I use (sorry) and the Apple monitors have very limited connectivity. So I think unfortunately the Apple monitors are out for me.
So I;m down to a couple other non Apple options. I will not buy an Acer again since I believe now that their quality control is not good and their support is absolutely atrocious. Shame I used to be a big fan of Acer PC's, but after owning a couple I'm steering clear.
My biggest issue right now is that most of the new budget monitors are geared toward 1080p HD uses so they are they are maxing out at 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio instead of 1920x1200's 16:10). So the tradeoff here is that HD movies will look better in 16:9, but 16:10 gives you "squarer" pixels and more vertical resolution for screen hungry apps like Logic.
Any opinions on this? I'm a bit new to the Mac so I don't know if I'm really better off going with a 1920x1200 screen like the Apple monitors.
Also, I know this may just be a bug in the Acer's scaling, but if I switch to 1920x1080, I lose the menus off the top of the screen or if I adjust the vpos I lose the dock at the bottom. Downscaling to 1600x1050 or even 1024x768 works fine. If I get a 1080 screen and set the resolution appropriately will it work correctly and without too much distortion?
I'm also curious what is the best way to hook up the monitor? I'm currently using the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook. My Pro is the slighter older silver keyboard model so it has the standard DVI out. Will I see any real improvement by going over to using DVI directly?
Also I'm wondering how people feel about glossy vs matte for music. My current displays are the non-glossy and I do think I prefer them for detail work.
The candidates right now are
Hanns-G HH-281HPB 28" @300$. It's one of the only budget monitors that uses 1920x1200. All the right inputs (DVI, VGA). I'm just afraid this might be a bit too good to be true. It's really cheap and after having problems with a "cheap" Acer (although it wasn't so cheap 3 years ago!) I don't want similar problems. Stand has no swivel or tilt (a big problem for my use). Also that resolution on such a big screen might be good for me or it might look grainy I don't know I haven't seen it. Anybody have any experience with these?
Samsung P2770H 27" @339 Looks nice, good color. Sadly only 1080 native resolution. Stand doesn't swivel, but does tilt. No VGA input, so won't work with my old PC (although strangely it says it comes with a VGA cable). They get generally good reviews and I know Samsung makes very good flat panel TV's.
ViewSonic X Series VX2739WM 27" @350. Once again maxes out at 1080. It's fast (1ms), has VGA input. I've never been a big fan of ViewSonic but they do seem to have gotten better color-wise. Tilt no swivel and it's anti-glare (not sure this is a plus).
There are also similar options from HP, Asus, LG and Sceptre but they are all 1080. In fact outside of the Apples, the Hanns-G and a few expensive monitors from NEC they all seem to be 1080. So if I really want the 1200 the Hanns-G seems like the only way to go.
Any input here would be greatly appreciated.

No doubt, the Apple displays are gorgeous. The first time I saw the 30" display wow, I wanted one BAD and it's actually what prompted me to buy a "big" monitor. The colors are great with a rich wonderful saturation level and as usual for Apple the form factor design is stunning. You know for that picture quality I could even get over the sticker shock and save up for one.
Which is why I was so disappointed when I actually sat down in the store and started to use Logic on one. I imagine for doing video work, graphic design or darn near anything else, it would be great. But for Logic I just found myself bending and twisting trying to look at toolbar at the bottom and then up to look at the menus. And instrument or plugin displays that were hard coded to look OK at lower resolutions looked really, really tiny to me. For me and particularly using Logic having 2 slightly smaller displays at a 45 degree angle makes more sense.
And once again the 24 seems just a bit small. I don't understand why they have a 27" iMac but you can't buy a 27" display. So iMac 27" starting at 1699, subtract out the cost of the CPU and drive ie the Mini and I'd really buy one. Strangely you can buy a 21.5" or a 27" iMac. Or you can buy a 24" or 30" display. Hmmmm.
So don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Apple for being expensive. They put a lot of money into R&D and into really thinking about the form and the function of their products. As a recent convert from being a PC developer for 25+ years, hey I've more than sipped the Kool-Aid here, I've guzzled it. They make great products and yeah they're more expensive, because they ARE better! I've now got 2 MBP's, 2 iPods, I'm about to get an iPhone (silly "death grip" or not) and I really want an iPad. Heck I'd really love an 8 core MacPro if I could afford one (alas I can't).
I guess my only gripe here is that there always seems to be a little less choice in the Apple world. Yeah, I know they do a lot less volume than the PC clone world I just think that they always seem to have a big gap between the high end and low end with not enough in between. So you can choose between the lower end and one piece units with no expansion boards (the mini or the iMac) or go straight to monster tower MacPro (way over 3K with display). You can get a MacBook but then you have to put up with a small screen or go with MacBook Pro, which let's face it is a lot of computing power for someone who just wants to web surf and write some email without squinting.
So here I am stuck in the middle. I don't want to buy a HannspreeQG or another piece of junk that's going to last 3 years and 3 months because of a crappy $2 capacitor that no seems to able to fix or care about fixing. I'd like to buy a really nice Apple monitor, I just want a big monitor, not a huge one and not a "medium" one (I know I'm spoiled but 24" seems "medium" these days).
Sorry about the rant here but my monitor is shutting down every 30 seconds and I'm about to go completely insane and toss it out the window!!!
Really glad to hear about that 84' VGA cable. I never imagined such a thing existed or would work without some sort of signal boost on the way. Very cool for me. My electronic drum kit is in another room and I would love to have a small cheap monitor next to it for sequencing. I had my laptop on a stand next to it for a while but I began to get terrified that I'd let a drumstick slip and destroy my laptop screen. That would be a very bad thing. Thanks for the tip.

My MacBook Pro is running very slow recently

I bought a MacBook Pro about a year ago for school, and everything was perfect until about three days ago. I woke up one morning, and used my laptop to do simple stuff like browsing the Internet, check Facebook, etc, and then went to class. When I came home later in the day, and tried to use my laptop, it was incredibly slow.
Firefox was taking minutes to load, and the pages that I'd usually browse in seconds would take much longer than normal to load. The spinning beachball was a constant companion whereas before, I hardly ever saw it. It isn't only Firefox that is slow to load, but other apps like Word, and even Finder takes a long time to get going.
I've done some searching on my own to try and find the cause of this problem, but there has been no solution. To save everyone the time, I've done the basic things like opening my Activity Monitor and checking for any programs that are taking up abnormal amounts of space. Here's the information from AM:

I've got 444 GB of 499.24 GB free, so it can't be a lack of space.
I've sorted everything in my "All Processes" tab by Real Mem, and the largest user of memory is kernel_task, but that can't be the problem with my laptop. Other than that, there are no programs or applications that take up an absurd amount of space.
I've also gone and repaired my disk under Disk Utilities, and it said that everything was okay, and nothing was out of the ordinary.
My caches have been cleared from both Safari (which I haven't used since I download Firefox) and Firefox. I even went ahead and reset my Firefox just to make sure nothing was being overlooked.
I've backed up all my important notes and documents into an external harddrive, so I'm not worried about losing any important data.
I logged into my guest account to check if there was just a program in my main account that was making it slow, but things took a long time to load on that account, too, so I'm thinking this is more of a hardware issue.
The OS is up to date, but when I tried to install Mavericks it froze right at the end and said there was an error, and to reinstall it from the App Store. I should note that I updated the OS and installed Mavericks after the laptop began acting up, not before, so I wouldn't think either are responsible for this slowness. Currently I'm using OS X 10.8.5.
Spotlight isn't doing any indexing, so that isn't a cause of this either.
So now I'm stuck on things to do, nothing stands out to me as irregular, and the MacBook itself doesn't make any loud, unusual noises when I'm on it.
Any help would be appreciated, if nothing can be found then I'm just going to take my laptop into a shop to get it fixed.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Multiple Hard Drive Failures on my Macbook Pro - Entourage reminders?

Over the past 2 months I've had three hard drives fail on three different macbook pro computers.
I've retraced my steps, searched many forums, and spoken with multiple Mac Geniuses but still can't figure out what's happening. The IT guy at work is about to kill me and I really want to figure out what's going wrong so I can fix it (or change my current behaviors).
Computer #1 - Out of the box, 2-3 weeks old. I took the computer home to do some work over the weekend. I didn't turn the it off before transporting it, but I did wait for it to go to sleep completely (I've since read that it takes a few moments while things in RAM switch over to the Hard Drive to save incase of power failure). I worked on it a bit at home, mostly just internet searches and a few word documents. When I returned to work my computer was running slowly and suddenly all of the programs locked. Since I've had this problem before with my personal computer (a G4 Powerbook), I tried the force quit options to no avail so I just held down the power key to power off. When I rebooted I got the dreaded "no" symbol.
Computer 2: IT gave me a used macbook pro that they repurposed for me. I made sure to shut down before transporting this computer. A few days later, before I even got to transfer all of my files, the computer started running slowly, programs locked. I eventually got the computer to shut itself down (as IT didn't want me to do a forced reboot) but upon restarting I got an even more dreaded screen, the folder with a question mark in it.
Computer 3: It was a fairly new computer, though a bit more ram, and probably only a few months old (used by a freelancer). It worked great. I took it home several times, transfered all of my files. Set up everything perfectly. Three weeks in, after working at my desk for about 4 hours, everything began to slow down. I called IT immediately and remotely sent a force shut down message. Nothing happened for about 15 minutes so I left for a meeting. I came back a few hours later and my computer was off. When it restarted, nothing appeared. There wasn't a "no" symbol or folder with a question mark in it, just a blank screen.
I've read and thought about all of the options.
- Large Magnet somewhere - It would have affected my personal computer (if at home) or my colleagues (if at work) or everyone else in nyc (while on the subway)
- Too hot - Possible I suppose, but how does running iTunes, powerpoint, and entourage do this?
- Downloaded something/Virus - We don't have administrative privileges. I can only update some software and send/receive folders. Plus, can any single file cause this much damage?
- Moved before asleep - This might have happened on the first computer, but I doubt it could happen to three. I always shut it down now before transporting, and I was sitting at my desk for hours before I had any trouble last time.
The one common factor that I haven't mentioned.
We use Entourage as a mail client here.
Each time the computer froze, the first things to freeze were the Entourage calendar reminders. Entourage seems to run strangely with the airport, but not with our LAN. When my computer froze last time, I had the aiport on but was working off the LAN. Could Entourage cause this much trouble? Has anyone else had trouble with entourage calendar reminders or failing hard drives?
Oh, and it also always happens on a Monday. I've taken the computers home multiple times though, so I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing during the transport or not, but the computer is always off now when I move it. I also cary my personal computer with me often, same routes and bags, so I'm not sure why it's not affected.

There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?

Mds and spotlight have been slowing it down to a standstill for months. Initially I was told by an Apple Store Genius to rebuild my spotlight index, which helped for a short while before the computer reverted back to it's normal slowness. Then I suspected Time Machine's constant backups were the culprit, so two weeks ago I stopped those and started running nightly backups using a program called "Time Machine Editor". The computer was running great until today. Most of the suggestions I've seen for this problem are either 1) Reindex spotlight, which I've done multiple times to no avail, or 2) Turn off Spotlight, which is not an option since I spend most of my time in iPhoto, a program for which Spotlight is crucial. I also don't want to do a full OS reinstallation because it would take too long and I doubt it would be effective in this situation. I have a feeling that there is one file or set of files that is messing up Spotlight, is there any way I could find these specific files and get them to stop messing everything up? Or do you have any other suggestions? Restarts don't help either.

I also don't want to do a full OS reinstallation because it would take too long and I doubt it would be effective in this situation. I have a feeling that there is one file or set of files that is messing up Spotlight, is there any way I could find these specific files and get them to stop messing everything up? Or do you have any other suggestions? Restarts don't help either.

How Do I Transmit Audio from My 2008 MacBook Pro to My 2011 Samsung HDTV?

I figured it out! I plugged in my 3.5MM auxillary cable I use to plug my iPhone into car stereo jacks from the headphones port on my MPB to the "PC/DVI Audio In" on the back of my Samsung HDTV and voila! It worked! No additional cables (other than these two). No upgrading OS. Yay!

This looks like a great workaround to the MPB to HDTV audio problem! Hopefully my geek status is still intact. W00T!
When in doubt, try all the cables you have in all the different ports. AV hasn't changed much over the years and you can often rig things to work with what you already have. Yay for keeping cables out of landfills and repurposing!

2nd iPod Classic locking up when connecting to MacBook Pro

I'll sum up the lead-in story as best I can.
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13". Just got an new iPod Classic a couple weeks back. I discovered that when playing the iQuiz game, I had a few lock-ups (freezing). Then a handful of times, it locked up when connecting it to the MacBook for charging or syncing. It didn't lock up EVERY time. But about 1 out of every 4 syncs on average.
I naturally thought something was wrong with the Classic, and brought it into the Apple store when it was locked up, and they gave me a new one.
But now this one is doing the same thing. Occasional lock-ups when connecting to the MacBook Pro. Doesn't matter which USB port. And doesn't seem to matter if the computer has been on, or if it's a fresh boot.
What could be going on here? I doubt highly that both Classics I've gotten have the same exact issue with occasional lock-ups when connected to the computer. My MBP otherwise has given me no problems. And no problems with other USB devices, ever.
Any ideas?

Update: bought a new usb sync cable to try, and no change. the Classic locked up the first try with the new cable.

MacBook Pro in deep trouble...

Hello! Basically I bought my MacBook Pro 15 inch 2008 late about 3 moths ago from eBay, the seller said that there isn't working trackpad so he give me the apple muse, so I didn't really care about it...but after I get it, the keyboard wasn't working as well, all other things was working. The seller was giving me option to send it back, but because this was my first apple laptop and I always wanted to get a macbook i didn't send it back. So because of that I bought a trackpad and keyboard and give it to my friend to change it(he is a processional in laptop and PC things) He did it, but it didn't fix my problem. After that I went to apple, in apple they said they can't do with it nothing, because it is to old and they can't guaranty that technician could put it back like it was(there was a little slot in the case, but it was fixed in service after) because they don't have parts for it, they said that I need to take it to repair service + they tried to make diagnostic but it failed, so I took it to service and they take it to diagnostics, but because they cannot did it either, they give me back it and now USB ports isn't working as well(I tried reset the SMC and pram settings and it didn't fix the USB ports)+ they said me to take it to apple, but apple said I need to take it to service... Can someone please can suggest me what can I do now? Were can I take it? (The closest apple store is in Birmingham and I am living in Wolverhampton) And + of this all the keyboard is working in BIOS lag but work...I have spend on it like now ~£170 + laptop £420(For me as student it is a lot) and I don't even know what problem it has and if this problem could be fixed...

I feel for you as that is a lot of money. But you may have missed a good chance to save some pounds when the eBay seller gave you an option to return it. Is that door closed now?
Also, you contacted three places to repair it: your professional friend, then Apple, then a 'repair service', and you had no luck. That should tell you something.
From Wolverhampton to Birmingham is less than 20 miles per Google Maps. Take it to Apple (unless it was the same place that told you that MacBook was too old to fix - something I doubt - a repair person would usually say a unit is not worth the expense of repair).

EFI update for the mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro?

I was wondering if Apple enabled the Lion Internet Recovery feature for the Mid-2010 MacBook Pros in the new round of EFI updates released yesterday. I know that they already did this for the 13-inch weeks ago but I wanted to make sure they expanded support for the 15" inch and 17" inch model. My doubt arises from the fact that the EFI update is for the Early 2010 MacBook Pros which would technically be a Summer 2009 model, rather than the actual mid-2010 model which is the one that I have.

I would agree. Actually, I am contemplating this possibility if Lion keeps annoying me with a bug in Safari where it tires to sandbox the GPU and then, crashes the whole web browser and computer. This iisue keeps happening even with the newest version of Safari v5.1.3 and the last time I encountered this issue occurred in a clean install of Lion v10.7.3 while writing an email on my gmail. Honestly, even though I love Lion and its features; it does not measure up to Snow Leopard's pinnacle of stability and compatibility. Besides the freezing issues I have experienced I also had an issue where my Mac would hang at shutdown and hang with a gray pinwheel (although this issue occurred only if I used the Mac OS X v10.7.0 installer, it has not appeared when installing Lion via the 10.7.2 installer, I am not sure about if the issue resurfaced in the latest installer as I had a hung shutdown when Safari froze and tried to shutdown my Mac, ultimately showing the dreaded gray pinwheel). Let's see what my Mac is up to in the following weeks, so far everything looks Ok and in the multiple visits to the Apple Store I have run hardware diagnostics in my MacBook Pro and all of the gave a clean bill of health to my machine. I can't afford to have the 8th clean install of Lion, therefore the next time Lion fails I will revert to Snow Leopard in a heart beat.

Do not buy a MacBook Pro?

I am a lifelong mac user and Apple cheerleader and I just got off an absolutely devastating phonecall.
About a month ago I finally convinced my fiancee to switch to Mac. I've loved my Powerbook G4 and so she decided to get a MacBook Pro 15". She is a writer/editor, so her computer is her daily livelihood.
The computer exhibited some strange behavior from day one, freezing as I was synching a calendar, but I wrote it off to installation bugs. I called Mac and mentioned it on a service call and they suggested I reinstall the OS just to be safe, so I did. The computer seemed to work for a week or so but then started intermittently freezing upon waking from sleep.
You've read a bunch about this in these forums, seems to be a known issue and common problem. I called Mac and they said they would repair it if we'd send it in for a week.
Thing is, my fiancee can't be without a computer, so I asked them to issue a refund on this defective machine and we would purchase a new one, so there would be overlap.
Apple will not do it. Even though they SHIPPED me a DEFECTIVE product, they are refusing to refund it because it's been 30 days (and they only refund for 14). Even though I called in with the issue on day 2 and have been giving them the benefit of the doubt trying to fix it myself (Anacron, maintenance scripts, etc...), they won't take it back.
I've probably sold my friends and family on $50k to $100k of Apple products over the past several years and so I am aghast. Maybe I'm being too prideful here, but they've just lost a customer for life.
I can't believe they are beta testing these MacBooks on their customers. Today is the day I switch back to PC and get everyone I know to do the same. It'll make my life miserable, but I am just too hurt to go on.

sounds like a pretty unfortunate experience.
the thing is though, the 14 day 'dead on arrival' period is a pretty reasonable time frame in which to allow a customer to determine if the machine they received has inherent flaws. and when within this period, apple are very good about swapping the machine for a new one, no ifs no buts. however, once you cross this 14 day period, anything that goes wrong is covered by warranty repair. no fun to have to send a shiny new machine off for repair when you just got it.. but this could have happened(and does happen) with anything and everything you might buy, from time to time.
if anything, I'm not sure that apple make clear enough their 14 day cool-off 'dead on arrival' period to purchasers.. everyone should know this is the deal with apple products, so if you run into anything suspicious from day one, like you did, you should immediately contact apple and get something done about it right away. in my view, there's nothing wrong with a 14 day period for this. it's nothing to do with a warranty, it is purely about replacing a machine immediately if it is defective as shipped, and 14 days is more than reasonable an amount of time for a customer to check the machine over to see if it is working or not.
I wouldn't be too rash in any decision to abandon apple forever over something like this. any electronics goods you buy can be faulty, and this is not likely to be the last time you'll ever have a problem with anything you buy. to apple's credit, they can be pretty reasonable if problems persist. I personally know a number of people who had hardware issues that came up after the 14 day from purchase period.. they had the machine fixed, then something else went wrong. after the second time (months down the track), apple seemed to have a 3 strikes out policy, and they no longer offered to repair the machine again, they replaced it new for old. this happened to my brother with his black macbook (the first core duo version), his motherboard failed, then the hard drive, and by the time they got to this stage, they just replaced the machine with a brand new core 2 duo black macbook. that seemed pretty fair to me.

Preview very sluggish on MacBook Pro. Move a bar and the umbrella turns a few seconds. Any ideas? I don't want to update my iMac until this one is solved.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

2009 Macbook Pro Reinstall Freezing

My folks Mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro's hard drive failed. I replaced with an SSD (using the computer to type this).
Initially I installed OS X 10.9.3 and could not get past the registration screen. It looped by getting to the iCloud login screen then return to the first step. I punted and reinstalled, after wiping the drive, with OS X 10.5 using the disk that come with the machine originally.
Now everything I do causes the machine to beachball. It takes almost 5 minutes to boot with an SSD, 1 minute to launch Safari into a working state, and 30 seconds to get a working terminal.
There seems to be other issues that I can't pin down. Does anyone have suggestions? Nothing seems to be adding up. Could it be bad RAM? The drive is the only thing replaced, but I can't think of anything else. I doubt any other hardware issues as they would likely cause the system to be unbootable or unusable.

Not a bad idea, but I would be suspect of that type of failure but it is worth a try.
