Macbook Pro + Dual 2.0 G5 -- what's the best setup?
I just purchased a new macbook pro, and was considering incorporating it into my home studio setup which uses a Dual 2.0 (Power PC) G5. I've been hunting around for an answer to how to make the most of these two computers, and I'm getting pretty confused!
I run mostly EWQL Symphonic Orchestra plugs, and would love to get faster performance, and more mileage out of them. I also use two monitors on the G5, and don't want to sacrifice the screen real estate and do everything on my 15" MB pro screen.
So, what I'm wondering, is this: Is there a way to spread out the processing power of these two computers using EWQL SO, and still use my two G5 monitors (and the MB pro monitor)?

Several possibilities.
#1. The Mac Book Pro is likely more powerful in the CPU department, so you could load Logic on there along with your plug-ins. Then use the G5 as a replacement for a hardware synth (as an AU/VST host). It will work basically like a Muse Receptor. http://www.museresearch.com/
#2. If you need the PCI slots for DSP cards and/or you prefer to mix the project on the G5, use the laptop as a replacement for a hardware synth. Install an AU and/or VST host application on laptop.
Option 1 and 2 will require that both machines have a MIDI interface and compatible audio I/O. You would basically run MIDI out from the main machine to MIDI In on the AU/VST Host machine, and run audio back to the machine running Logic. RAX2 hosts AUs, http://plasq.com/rax

3. Keep an eye out for a Mac version of FX-Teleport which basically does what Apple's node technology does, but will work with 3rd party plug-ins. Right now I know it works on PC with VSTs. Hopefully their Mac version is coming soon and opens the door for Logic. http://www.fx-max.com/fxt/

We don't know which MBP you have so start by establishing what ports you have on the MBP that you can connect an external drive to. It'll have USB ports, but if they're USB 2.0, a full, bootable backup could take a very long time. If it's USB 3.0, backups can go a lot quicker. The USB external HD's are common and relatively inexpensive. If you have a Thunderbolt port, that's very fast but the externals compatible with it tend to be more expensive.
If it's just USB 2.0 and Firewire, Firewire is faster but is being phased out. USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 3.0 so when you upgrade to a newer MBP, a USB 3.0 external can plug right in.
Also, unless the external must be really portable, look for one that has a separate power source rather than drawing power from the connection to the Mac, since some externals need more power than the Mac is able or willing to supply. -

There are NO applications that will make your MBP run faster. At best they will have no effect, at worst they will create more problems.

I would like to purchase a monitor to connect to my laptop with good resolution that will be better for my eyes. Do you think that I will expirience problems If I get a 4K monitor and Ill run it with full resolution @30hz? i do not use any videos in my work or gaming. I am a commercial real estate broker. Having trouble sharing iTunes account
I have currently moved the iTunes media folder to a shared folder on the hard drive but it keeps bringing up control issues for my other half. A real headache. I'm sure somebody must have a better solution!!!

Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.

If you don't see any messages, not have anti-malware running or the Firewall on, try installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8 (according to your profile).
Restart your Mac after the combo in installed, try the App Store.
Also... if you have an app called Little Snitch installed, that can prevent a connection to the App Store. -

If I understand correctly you want to use both the Apple TV's with one TV.
There wouldn't be a problem with that, they will each need there own network connection and should be connected to different AV inputs on the TV so that you can switch between each Apple TV as a source with your TV remote.
If you don't have two HDMI ports on the TV, the Apple TV 1 will connect by component cables, if this isn't possible you would need to get yourself an HDMI switch. -

What is the best setup with AME to encode h264 (1080p) and to avoid stuttering, dropped frames using a classic video player .I am looking to have the smoothest experience (in fast horizontal motion for ex!).It also can be another format (intra codec’s etc...)it doesn’t matter as long as readable by most players. 1.) Why can't I make a silent project in GarageBand? I have to instead find a project with a long enough song, make an "iLife preview" of it (see (2) below), copy it from the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser to the end of the movie, and then open the audio panel and turn the volume to zero. And all this so that video websites don't get confused by a soundtrack that starts in mid-movie.
2.) Why do I have to "render" them by the following process: Double-click a song in the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser. You get a dialog box saying "The project "The Great Race" cannot be used because it was not prepared with an iLife preview. Would you like to open "The Great Race" in GB so you can save it with an iLife preview?" What I don't understand is why this new thing was introduced and why I have to do it via iMovie. -
What is the best setup for cable modems/routers for mac?
I use a MacBook Air and currently have CableOne as my ISP. I use the AirportExpress for my router. To upgrade to faster speeds I need to upgrade my modem. Am thinking about using a modem/router combination. What is the best set up for me?
Do modem/combos work well with Mac?
Also - would it be better to upgrade to an Airport Extreme? We had a housefull of Mac people for Christmas and the Airport Express couldn't handle all the devices very well at all.

What's the best setup for a dedicated boot drive (Lion) with a separate storage drive?
I have a 120GB SSD and 4 x 3TB drives striped together for storage on my hot off the shelf Mac Pro. This may be an elementary question and I'm sure it's like every other post in these forums but what really is the best way to maintain a dedicated OSX Lion boot drive while keeping user profile type stuff on the storage drive? A few thoughts...
1) I know the risks with striping, which is why it will all be backed up online. Yes. Online.
2) I am specifically curious about how to keep pretty much all of the User folder type stuff on the storage drive...at least the big stuff.
Any recommendations? I know Win7 had some big problems with doing this kind of thing. My main goal is to be able to reinstall OS X every day if I wanted and not affect the users or their respective data. Possible?The desktop is implemented by a folder by the same name in the Home folder for each user.
Before you move it, it will be here:
/Users/<your_shortname>/Desktop
I would first try providing an alias in Finder to replace that Folder.
If that does not work, you may need to use Terminal to create a Symbolic Link.
ln -s <desired location> <where the link should be created>
You can open up terminal and type in man ln to see the other options and how the command works. -
What's the best setup / use for Thunderbolt + SSD iMac ?

I'm testing one of the new 27" iMacs (i7, 16gb ram, SSD, 2tb internal HD, external Promise Thunderbolt disk)
I have until Monday to decide to keep it or return it and I'm doing this test to see if it would make a good second computer for our editing (primary is 8 core MacPro).
I can either afford this 27" iMac with a Promise Thunderbolt disk OR anoher MacPro with 4 internal disks.
Can someone please share with me how I would get max performance out of the iMac-setup?
Here's what I THINK prior to adding the Thunderbolt disk:
Internal SSD => Lion + apps
Internal HD => imported videofiles, scratchdisk, cache etc. and export disk
But then......... how should the situation change when adding the Thunderbolt drive ?
Is the Thunderbolt so fast, that all video data should be placed there or would I benefit from placing SOME part on the internal HD, and OTHER parts on the external Thunderbolt ?
Or even more complex ........ should I use all three disks (also the SSD) for different parts of the video / process and if so, what's your thoughts?
Or......... would you go for yet another 8 core Macpro without SSD and Thunderbolt??

Are you only using one Thunderbolt disk? If so, IMHO, you're wasting the beauty of TBolt. To make much better use of it will cost a pretty penny, but you end up with a 4, 6, or 8-disk external RAID enclosure. In that, you stuff a bunch of drives and create however many RAID volumes you want. Preferably a couple of separate RAID0 volumes for the speed (raw data on one of them, scratch space on another, backing the raw data up elsewhere).
However, one TBolt disk is really a waste.
Were I buying a Mac right now, I'd get the following:
6-core 3.3GHz Mac Pro
aftermarket SSD (to hell with Apple's pricing)
aftermarket RAM (see above paranthetic)
2 10k WD SATA drives for an internal software-only RAID0 array for scratch
aftermarket ESATA PCIe card
ESATA enclosures with drives
That last bullet is "up to you" bit. You can do 2 external enclosures with RAID0, RAID1, whatever works for storage and speed. And it can be built piece-meal as you need to expand.
Why did I pick the 6-core vs. one of the 2 x 4-core machines? Horsepower, pure and simple. Those 3.3GHz 6-core chips are quick little bastards (compared to the rest of the Mac Pro line) and you really want raw number crunching power vs. a bzillion cores. Put the apps and OS on the SSD. Scratch space on the internal 10K drives. Then figure out how to split the storage up with your external enclosures.
When you're ready, grab a Quadro 4K card and enhance your video editing speed substantially.

I have a huge collection of tape cassettes that I want in my iTunes library. I want to know what the best cords, hardware (type of Tape cassette player/recorder) and software to use.
It depends on what kind of inputs your Mac has:
If your iMac is a 2012 or older model it probably has an audio line input, in which case you can directly connect your tape deck outputs to your iMac. Generally this requires a cable with 2x RCA male connectors on one end and 1x 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo male connector on the other end.
If you have a more recent iMac that does not have a line input you will need to get a USB audio interface like a Focusrite Forte, but in these cases you will need to pay attention to the kind of cable inputs the USB device has.
In both cases you will need recording software. There are many choices. I have used Sound Studio with great success for tapes, vinyl and live recordings. (Note: if you are using a USB audio interface it may come with its own recording software.)
Pay attention to whether or not your tapes were recorded with or without Dolby B or C noise reduction; and also whether or not your tape deck supports none, Dolby B or Dolby C - getting each tape matched with your deck settings makes a big difference in the results. And depending on how quality conscious you are you may also want or need some noise reduction software, in which case I suggest looking at Wave Arts MR Noise, SoundSoap or Audacity.
You might also consider just purchasing selected CDs instead of investing in all the work required to set up, record, edit & clean up recordings from some of your old tapes.
