Macbook Pro DVD not playing

I own a refurbed Early 2011 MBP 15" 2.2 GHz i7, 1G AMD 6750 graphics, 8MB RAM, 750G HD, owned less than a month. I am running OS X 10.7.2 and am also running Windows 7 Home Prem on a 250G Boot Camp partition.
The Mac side of this machine has tons of trouble reading video DVDs. The Apple DVD Player app can read NO video DVDs, whether commercial or made from iMovie with Toast. I downloaded VLC for Mac, and it can do a bit better with some, but still has issues.
Here's the crazy part of all this: the Windows 7 side of the machine has no issues whatsoever: all Win apps (Media Center, VLC, Roxio and Adobe apps) can read video DVD discs from this drive with no issues. None. This is clearly NOT a hardware issue if the drive works in Windows but not OS X. As this is my first Mac, having finally been swayed by the "It just works!" arguments all these years, I find it highly ironic I have to boot Windows (gasp!) on this VERY expensive Mac in order to do something so simple as to watch Cars 2 with my son on DVD.
I have:
1. Verified that this is NOT a hardware issue by successfully watching DVD videos on the Windows partition of this hardware set
2. Reset pram, repaired Disc Permissions in Disk Utility
3. Successfully read software DVDs
4. Successfully burned several types of DVDs
5. Can read and write music and data CDs
6. Cleaned the drive anyway with compressed air AND with CD/DVD lens cleaner
7. Made sure all software on Mac is updated
8. Deleted possibly corrupt Finder preference lists and restarted Finder to recreate new ones successfully
9. Have tried several brands of burned DVDs and several different commercial DVDs - same results
The drive even reads all the files on the DVDs - I get the proper name of the disc, it mounts, and I can open the individual AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and see all the files, etc. Just cannot seem for the life of me to play anything!
I am looking for any info related to driver/software updates or fixes I can try. I see a lot of issues like this all over the Internet dating back several years andd can find no evidence that Apple has ever responded to this issue. Anyone out there have any luck? Please respond, thanks a bunch!

plus do not want to lose the use of the machine by sending it back or sit on the phone for 2 hours while they tell me to do what I've already done and then tell me to waste another 2 hrs with a Genius Bar appt.
Since you are still under warranty, you can always request a replacement until your computer has been repaired.
Genius Bar appts are just that; appointments - no waiting time.  Also, you do not have to go to an Apple Store.  YOu can also go to an AASP.
Level 1 & 2 Help is for people with Level 1 & 2 Problems.
Never heard of this regarding Apple Care tech support.  At least that has not been my experience with them.  A warranty is a warranty is a warranty.  If you do not use it, you will lose it.  The one year warranty is standard.  Take full advantage of it.
Thought Macbook community might also have some other do-it-yourselfers out there.
You are correct.  Judging from your original post, you listed everthing under the sun that you have tried to do to fix your issue.  Your post was very detailed which was very helpful.  A BIG THANK YOU FOR THAT!
My only other suggestion would be for you to visit Youtube's "How To" video tutorials.

  • My Macbook Pro will not play a Disney DVD (Howl's Moving Castle). It says supported disc not available but it plays on my cousin's Macbook Pro.

Basically my macbook pro will not play this one DVD. It is a dvd that is fresh out of the package that I order from amazon and it is the second dvd that I have tried. Amazon sent me a new dvd when there were problems but both are not working but my laptop will play all other dvds, including the bonus dvd that came with the dvd i am trying to watch. I tried playing the dvd in my cousin's macbook pro and it worked. I already repaired discs permissions and restarted my computer but i cannot get this dvd to play for the life of me. When I put it in the disc drive the laptop buzzes for a few seconds then spits it out. When I open dvd player before hand and hit play it gives the message "supported disc is not available"

The laptop is about 2 years old, and I watch a lot of movies on it. I would think I had set the region but I could be wrong. I'm in North America wouldn't that be the preset? Also, how would you go about changing or double checking that. Also if a movie was from a collaboration of disney and studio ghibli (japanese studio) would that mean I have to change the region just for that one movie? It would be weird if it were that way because I have another movie by disney and studio ghibli, and it plays, for that matter so does the bonus feature disc that came with this movie....

  • MacBook pro will not play a commercial video dvd?

My 17" MacBook Pro will not play a commercial movie DVD.  The computer appears to referance the disc 5 times then ejects the disc.  I have never played any video on this computer before and I have had the computer for 2 year. I can not get the settings correct or something.   If anyone has any suggestions on this problem please let me know.

Can you describe in a handful of bullet points:
what content you are exporting (slideshows, home movies)
how you did it in Aperture
how exactly you burned it (program, settings, etc..)
We need a bit more info... before you start reaching for your wallet
But I must say, I nearly agree with ClayG on the replacement. DVD superdrives are cheap these days.
Depending on how often you use it to watch or burn, I woudln't even bother having it fixed.
If you use it once a week and are not on the road when you do, just get an external bus powered one - it will likely have a dual USB cable, so you'd need two USB sockets - I got one and it worked well

  • MacBook Pro will not play or recognize dvd

MacBook Pro will not play or recognize dvd

It could be something wrong so i would sugest going to eBay and buying the same model you have that is listed for parts. These are usually cheap and most parts can still be used. Chances are that the disc drive will work because the "For Parts" means the computer does not work and the disc drive does not affect the computer's working order.

has the video been completely downloaded onto your MacBook Pro when you start to play it? Or are you playing it while it downloads, AKA streaming it?

  • Macbook Pro does not play audio part of video

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro (early 2013 with OS 10.10.1).
A colleague sent me a video file, which was originally recorded in MTS format. The sound portion of it does not play on my machine, although it generally can handle MTS. I have a colleague with a Windows PC, for him the audio plays ok. I have another colleague with an older MBP, for him the audio also plays ok. But then I have two more colleagues with a newer MBP like me, and for none of us the audio plays at all. The strange thing is that I can open the file in various editors such as Premiere, Audition, or Logic Pro, and they would all show the waveform of the audio, even the VU meters react normally, but there still is no audible sound.
On the machines that play the sound, we have tried converting the video and exporting the audio portion into various other formats, but with the very same result. None of them play sound for me. This is extremely weird and we have no answer what could be the problem.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks a lot & best regards,
    Rainer

    Hi Eric,
    thanks for the reply.
As I said, we had tried several editors and players, as well as all kinds of formats, using all kinds of converters, but so far to no avail.
The AAC codec is a common codec for the Mac, so there should be no need to convert it. I have videos with that codec that play ok. It already turned out that converting the video file to other formats does not make any difference.
    But thanks anyway,
    Rainer

  • My Macbook Pro does not play sound after i unpluged headphones and no light is on

Hi i have a macbook pro and i like it one day when we were trying to get it to work with our pa system and it went into protect mode so i un-pluged my laptop and no sound was to be heard there are no input and output driver in the sound nothing i tryed everything resterted it reset the pram and no red light is there any help besides going to the genius bar?

See if there are some methods here you havent tried.  These are the only phone numbers and email addresses that I am aware of that are made public by Apple: http://www.apple.com/contact/
    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • Airplay-connected Macbook Pro Will Not Play Audio On Apple TV

After upgrading to a Retina Macbook Pro running Mavericks (10.9.3), I can no longer play audio using AirPlay through my AppleTV 2. The video connection is flawless, yet when going into Sound > Output through System Preferences, I can not select AppleTV | AirPlay as an output device. Is this a hardware issue? Is there another fix available?

That actually did the trick. Well played. It would be nice if that were in *any* of the support documentation for AirPlay.
    Many thanks.

  • QuickTime movies in Keynote on MacBook Pro do not play

On my iMac G5, all QuickTime movies play just fine in Keynote. When I transfer Keynote presentations to my MacBook Pro, many of the movies are virtually transparent. Those same movies play just fine in QuickTime on the Intel laptop. Any sugggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Ok, open the movie in the QuickTime Player. With QuickTime as the frontmost application, hold down command and type I. What does it say is the "format" for this video?
I'm thinking it's using a codec that hasn't been made available for Intel (though once you know the format, you'll know where to look to see if it IS available).

If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 5.
    1. If you're only having trouble with YouTube videos, sign in to your YouTube account and load this page. You may see a link with the text "Leave the HTML5 Trial." If so, click that link.
    2. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, then from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Check Now. Quit and relaunch your browser.
    3. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:
              •          Flash Player (failing).plugin
You may be prompted for your login password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    4. Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from this page:
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    5. If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked Enable plug-ins.
    6. Select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.
    7. In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    Close the window. Then select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

  • My macbook pro does not play any cd/dvd

I have a mac book pro and it does not support any cd/dvd. Some time it runs dvd but only voice not video, dont know what to do or how to resolve this issue. I am out of warranty.

You really shouldn't have to use any special driver to use an external drive - that Western Digital makes it (it seems) a necessity just makes me hate WD drives even more. Over the decades, I've had nothing but problems with WD drives and I no longer purchase them.
If I were you, I would simply ditch the WD drive (if it won't mount without using a special driver) and purchase another brand. I can recommend LaCie (using Seagate drive), and G-TECH and HGST (Hitachi) drives.

  • MacBook Pro DVD/CD not engaging

My 15 inch MacBook Pro will not play DVD's or CD.   There are no errors - the discs are not engaging and just ejecting. I have tried several store bought DVDs and CD's.  My Apple Care just expired earlier this month.  Thanks for any advice!

Oh - that's bad. It could be that your SuperDrive is failing. If you've an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider near you, you should take it in and have them take a look at it. It may be a simple mechanical problem that they can fix, or the drive may be dead or dying. I don't know what Apple's charging these days to replace a SuperDrive but you can often get an equivalent drive off the Internet and install it yourself. OWC has a number of solutions.

  • This is the same question I've asked 3x in 24 hours, but it doesn't appear in the listing. Maybe I need help in phrasing questions?:)Q. why can I play some DVDs on my MacBook Pro but not on desk top Apple (they're both -1 year olds

    Hi
This'll be my third attempt in 24 hrs to ask the same question. maybe I need guidance on phrasing questions?:)
    Q. Why can I always play DVDs on my MacBook Pro but not always on my desk top Apple. They're both less than  year old. The desk top sometimes displays a message that says I have to change regions (from Australia to South America...doh...)

    Region Code 4:
Mexico, Central and South America, and the South Pacific.
Includes Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, New Guinea, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela
Apparently my first response was off in left field.  The DVD player has its own code.  My recommendation is to change the code when it asks.  It is possible that the disks that play correctly are region-free and the ones that don't have a region code.  If this does not work, you still have four more changes available; you won't be stuck with the new code.
