Macbook Pro + DVI to HDMI cable + HDTV = only 1080i?

Hi all,
I connected my MBP to my TV via a DVI to HDMI conversion cable ($24 from Fry's), but the highest resolution I am getting is 1080i (confirmed on the computer, and the system readout on the TV). Are there other settings that I missed (in the computer or the television) that I need to configure in order to get full 1080p out of this setup? Or is it the cable? Any help on the matter would be great!
I was hoping that the picture quality from the MBP to the TV would be greater, so being able to output 1080p would really help out. I haven't tried connecting via the DVI to VGA cable, but I'd really like to run this through my receiver, and my receiver does not have a VGA in, thus my want to use HDMI.
Also, is there a setting in OSX that allows you to close the computer without it powering down into sleep mode?
Computer: Apple Macbook Pro 17" High-res 2.4 GHz
Television: Sony BRAVIA V3000 46"
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR605

Hi guys, I just got my Samsung LE40M87BD working on my MacBook Pro running Leopard in full 1080p resolution. Steps:
Install DisplayConfigX from www.3dexpress.de
Start DisplayConfigX
Select the correct monitor in the top dropdown list
Under Monitor, my settings are (mostly default):
Refresh rate 45.00-61.00
Horizontal frequency 10.00-120.00
Pixel Frequency 138.50 (specified in the Samsung manual)
Default refresh rate 60 (specified in the Samsung manual)
Under Resolution, I created a new setting:
Kind = Timing
H V
1920 Active 1080
48 Front Porch 3
32 Sync 5
80 Back Porch 23
Untick Interlaced if it is ticked!
Select Pixel Frequency and type in 138.500
Check the following (if the numbers are not correct, you have made a mistake above):
Check that Horizontal is 66.587 KHz (specified in the Samsung manual)
Check that Refresh rate is 59.934 Hz (specified in the Samsung manual)
Check 'Enabled'
Click Done
Go to Install, click Install
Restart the system as suggested
Your monitor not here? The challenge is to find the Front Porch, Sync and Back Porch settings that work for your monitor. The trick is to check if they are in the manual, and if not, assuming that the horizontal and vertical frequencies are, Google the horizontal and vertical refresh rates - they are pretty certain to yield the right settings! E.g. I Google'd '66.587 59.934 front porch'. Alternatively, try this if you are more technical: http://www.vesa.org/Public/CVT/CVTd6r1.xls
Hope this helps!

  • Does the mini displayport able to transfer audio and video to an external monitor (example: a tv) using a 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an hdmi cable?

I was wondering this, because I want to hook up my 2011 MacBook Pro to a external monitor (TV) using an hdmi cable.  This would be heplful before I buy a mini displayport to hdmi adapter, and then maybe find out that the mini displayport might not transfer audio, only video.

Yes, min Displayport supports audio and video for the 2011 MBP 13" via HDMI.

  • I was able to hook up my macbook pro to the hdmi cable and see my desk top but it won't let me see any programs I open.

I was able to hook up my macbook pro to my tv using an hdmi cable and all I see is my desk top but not the movie playing on Netflix.  Is there some utility I need to do on my computer?

Your TV is acting as an extension of your desktop. You can have some windows on your internal screen and some on your TV. Just drag the ones you want on your TV to that part of the extended screen. You can find out how the two screens are related spacially (and control it) at System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.
If you prefer the two screen display the same windows, you can activate mirroring on that same preferences panel. You will have to choose what common resolution they both use.

  • How do I set up my MacBook Pro to view on my HDTV?

I connected my TV to my MacBook Pro with the hdmi cable and changed the display to mirror and changed the source on my TV to PC. What am I missing?
    Thanks!

Check System Preferences > Sound > Output to see if you have a line for the TV (could be labelled with the brand of the TV or some string with "HDMI" in it). If you have one and it's not selected, select it.
If you don't have one, the port you are using on your MBP may not support sound output. In that case, you might have to attach a separate audio cable.
I'm not familiar enough with the model MBP you are using to say which situation is likely to apply to you.

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a sony bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. The same set up has worked with three other, though different televisions. Any thoughts?

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.

  • Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

The mini dvi on the MacBook will only support video, in order to get audio you'll need to a cable from the sound out port to the sound in port on the TV.

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

  • What cable do i need to connect my macbook pro to the hdmi input on my tv?.

what cable do i need to connect my macbook pro to the hdmi input on my tv?.

    hi Sam
It's actally an HDMI adapter that Apple sells.
You hook the small adapter up to your MBP and then HDMI cable to your TV. Please note adapter is for HDMI compliant for HDMI rev 1.3 and above:
My TV, which has DVI port also, besides HDMI gets its best resolution by DVI of which also sell at Apple store for the MBP.
Bottom line is check w/ your TV manufacture to be sure your flat screen supports 1920 X 1200.
    Let 'er rip and...
    cheers

I am trying to connect my mac book pro to the tv via a mini displayport to a hdmi cable, the only picture on the tv screen is the background picture of my mbp, does anyone know what I need to connect to my samsung tv ?

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

  • MacBook 2007 black 13" would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable send audio to the TV?

I attached my macbook (2007 black 13") to my TV with a mini-DVI to VGA; would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable allow my audio to play through the TV? Wanted to ask before I purchased it. Thanks.

No. The black MacBooks don't send audio through HDMI, so you'd need to connect the audio separately.

  • Connect a macbook pro to on old tv with only aerial cable input

I'm trying to connect a macbook pro to on old tv with only aerial cable input, i have a mini displayport to vga, vga to s-video/phono(yellow) and a phono to aerial, the macbook doesnt recognize it as a display, any suggestions? Can i force it to send the signal?

its not for picture quality the screen is not much bigger, its for an arcade emulation in an exhibit, so i wanted a crt type moniter, and low qulaity output, what input would an old style tv need for it to work?

  • How Do I Transmit Audio from My 2008 MacBook Pro to My 2011 Samsung HDTV?

    Hello,
I'm trying to transmit audio from my 2008 late model MacBook Pro to my 2011 Samsung HDTV.  My MacBook's Model Identifier is MacBook Pro 4,1 (ancient, I know).  I purchased this DVI to HDMI cable which does a beautiful job of transmitting the video to my HDTV, but no audio (as advertised): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E8SY5Q/ref=oh_o02_s01_i00_details   HELP!!
    Thanks very much.

I figured it out!  I plugged in my 3.5MM auxillary cable I use to plug my iPhone into car stereo jacks from the headphones port on my MPB to the "PC/DVI Audio In" on the back of my Samsung HDTV and voila! It worked! No additional cables (other than these two). No upgrading OS.  Yay!
    Here's the auxillary cable:  http://www.amazon.com/AUDIO-3-5MM-JACK-AUXILIARY-CABLE/dp/B002Q3K0QS/ref=sr_1_1? ie=UTF8&qid=1330576344&sr=8-1
This looks like a great workaround to the MPB to HDTV audio problem!  Hopefully my geek status is still intact.  W00T!
When in doubt, try all the cables you have in all the different ports.  AV hasn't changed much over the years and you can often rig things to work with what you already have.  Yay for keeping cables out of landfills and repurposing!

  • Plugging 2011 Macbook pro into my HDMI TV

Hello all. I am about to buy a 2011 13" Macbook Pro. My first Mac. I have done some reading on the mini display port and it's computability with HDMI. From what I've read it is also known as DP++ and it passes the signal straight through as HDMI with the use of an adapter. However, the audio is only passed through if the PC supports HDMI signaling, which I believe the 2009 Macbooks didn't. I don't know if that's since changed on the new models. I have read that you have to use an adapter then plug that into a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other and then use a "y" cable for the audio plugged into your amp for sound. I have seen on a Display Port web page, what looked like an adapter with display port one side and HDMI the other, does this exist as it seems better than the DVI to HDMI approach.
    So in summary
    1) What's the best way to connect my 2011 Macbook Pro to my HDMI TV ?
    2) Can I get the audio to the TV through the Display Port without having to use a Y cable from the Macs audio out ?
    Thanks

Does the MiniDisplay -> HDMI adapter work with the new MacBook Pro (early 2011) ?

  • How can I get my '010 Macbook Pro to use the entire HDTV screen?

I have both my late '09 MacMini and mid-'010 Macbook Pro connected to my HDTV with HDMI cables.
The Displays pane of System Preferences on the Macmini gives me the options of 1080p and 60 hZ, which use all of the HDTV screen.
However, on the Macbook Pro I only get resolution options.
The HDTV (Sharp Aquos 46") gives me only Stretch, SuperStretch, Dot-by-Dot, and Zoom options. I use Dot-by-Dot because
the others, while the use all of the HDTV's horizontal space, cut off either the top of the display (Title Bar), the bottom (Dock), or both.
Is there any way for the Macbook Pro to use all the HDTV's "real estate" like the MacMini does?

If your MBP can use it, I highly recommend the following adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er
I'd be very surprised if it doesn't have a capable mini DisplayPort, since my not-quite-one-year-old MBP does.  But to be sure, first make sure you've got a mini DisplayPort, then scroll down on the page above and find a user comment titled "How you know if it is supported w/o guessing."
