Macbook pro: enough grunt to multicam edit off FW400 ext drive

Have a rev A Macbook Pro with 1.5gig RAM. It seems to be choking on a two camera edit (one hour long) from media stored on a FW400 hd drive. It is reporting dropped frames etc

I have a first gen macbook white core duo (not pro or c2d) and I can do multicam with 4 cameras with no problem.
Due to space issues I use 2 external hdd on FW400 with DV footage. One has the files and the other one is the scratch disk. But when I take the footage home I only use one FW400 disk with no problems either.
One of my co-workers had the same issue you have, and we realized the it doesnt matter whether is FW400 or FW800, but the speed of the HDD.
He was using an old 100 mb/s hdd, while mines are SATA II 300 mb/s.
It can be done, and appearently doesnt even need the latest and greatest MBP...it only depends on the speed of the external HDDs.

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.

Even 16 MB VRAM would be enough to display a 2D picture on the 30".
Depending on 3D usage you need much VRAM.
Unless you are using a lot of the latest 3D games or Apples 3D pro apps (Motion/Shake or something like that) 128 MB should be fine.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

1. Insert your DVD.
2. Open Disk Utilities (Application> Utilities> Disk Utilities). Highlight your DVD and press "New Image" on the upper toolbar.
3. Choose the location you would like to save your DVD from the drop down menu, "Desktop" is usually the best choice. Then click Save.
4. When finished, your DVD icon will appear on the desktop with the .dmg extension.
5. With iMovie open, double-click the .dmg file you created to mount it. The iMovie import window will then appear asking you to choose. Click Import All and wait for the Import to complete.

My 20111 macbook pro will intermittently turn its wifi off (often when it wakes up or loses signal with a station). It then won't turn back on unless I restart the computer. There are also issues with my screen starting up with a much lower resolution than normal (which reverts about half way through start up to the normal resolution). and every once in awhile a patch of checkers will appear for a few seconds and then disappear.
any ideas? are these all caused by the same problem?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.

I have a macbook pro and it randomly will turn off. This happens when the computer is plugged in and when it is not. The condition of the battery says: good.

I borrowed someones charger and after 5 to 10 minutes of charging it turned on. The charger light came on amber and was amber during the entire charge and has been green since. Unlike my charger which would only come on green, or very very dim green no matter what since the batter has died completely. Sorry to hear your MacBook Pro is not charging or powering on. Sometimes a System Management Controller reset can help with the following charging and power issues:
Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
To reset the System Management Controller on your MacBook Pro (with a built-in battery) , you can follow these steps:
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount" and "diskutil info disk2." Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help? Thank you. blelambert

Also before installing Please go to Applications-->Utilities--> Adobe installers and if there is any uninstaller for CS5.5 , you can remove it and do a fresh install.

No, not with Boot Camp. I've never even tried it with a VM (which I use) - I keep all the data on my internal drive. I'm not saying that it couldn't be done with a VM, I've just never tried it.

I deleted windows after i realised i wasnt enjoying using it at all and wasted my hard drive. I now decided that i want another OSX on there instead yet i have only allowed myself 10 gb on the partition. I have ben thru some programms but am struggling on making this partition bigger.
I only want it at 20gb but cant seem to make the partition bigger, only smaller or split it into further partition.
Is there a way to do this, i have all installation discs from original OSX so think this could help.
Any help please would be fantastic.

Hi, dragging the partition will only make smaller, not larger. In disk utility you can only split or make smaller the partitions. Yes i booted from installation disks also but still no help.
And Brody, I am willing to erase the disc completely, infact jus started doing a backup in order to do so but that failed also. And the information you gave on partition a hard drive, Although very simple and i already know how to do this, but it wont let me make the partition bigger, and i dont want to make a new partition, just enlarge the one i already have, which i dont see possible from disk utility.
Getting really frustrated now, even backing up is saying no to me. **** external being a douche.
I dont mind erasing the hard drive but surely this must be doable without deleting the secondary partition back t a single volume, and re partitioning into 2 volumes again.
