Macbook Pro ethernet problems

Hi All:
First post here. I have a 15" first generation MBP, and I'm having some ethernet problems. When my ethernet works, it works fine. However, if i were to shut down the machine and disconnect the ethernet cable, I cannot reconnect to the ethernet. In Network Preferences, Ethernet is not available in the pulldown and it appears gray-ed out in the Network Port Configurations. Restarting the computer, unplugging or resetting the modem doesn't help. Also, the PC link light on the modem will not be lit (but is lit when working).
The computer will not connect to any ethernet network, no matter where I am.
I've noticed if I keep resetting both comuter an modem a couple dozen times over a few hours, the PC link button will light, and upon next startup the ethernet connection will be restored. What do you guys think the problem is? It seems abnormal to me.

Had a similar situation with mine back in January, 2.16 Intel.
After spending 3 nights with my Cable ISP as the connection would drop-off, ethernet light flicker green, amber etc.
Took it back to Apple dealer, connected to Dealers network same problem. Cause:::: Motherboard had to be replaced, possible soder loose on the MO. Got it back in 10 days, haven't had a problem ever since.
Suggest you take back yours to have Apple dealer try this out.

  • Macbook pro trackpad problems

I have been having trackpad problems on my macbook pro (bought in 2010) for the past couple of days. Not only does it move erratically by itself, but the left click does not respond as it should. Whenever I use the left click, it works as a right click, and I have made no changes in the trackpad options. I have done a battery check through the shift and battery click option, and the response for battery came normal. I have also done a PRAM/NVRAM reset, but the problem still persists. Do I need to replace my battery? Please leave any suggestions. Thanks

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and in that case the unit must be serviced or replaced.
    3. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    4. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    5. Reset the System Management Controller.
    6. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    7. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • MacBook Pro 2009 - Problems

Now i apologize if I'm making a repeat threat, or if I'm mixing quite a couple of things in the wrong thread. I'm a "noobie" to these forums and Mac's as well, but in due time i shall adjust. I recently got a New MacBook Pro in the mail last Thursday, it's the 2gb version, 13'. Any more info needed, will be provided, just ask away.
-Now my problem is the wifi or "airport" item. ( Again i apologize, I'm not used to these terms due to the fact that I've been a windows user since forever, and my reason for wanting to own and use a Mac? Simple, it's because i heard so many good things about them, but sadly Its not going great for me)
-My Macbook pro, picks up a signal, then drops it. Now this happened repeatedly, until last night, it actually stuck with the signal surprisingly. Another major thing i want to bring up, is Ichat. I was using Aim on Ichat, and then Ichat all of a sudden encounters an error and kicks me off and ends my webcam session! I have no clue why at all.
-The last problem i have encountered so far, is the battery indicator!!
-Now i understand from what i heard, if your using wifi with your Mac, it goes from having a 7 hour life, down to 4-5. Correct? Please correct me if i am wrong.
And when using ethernet, you have a 7 hour lifespan, right? If that's the case, then its a shame, since im forced to use wifi. But thats not my problem, its the battery indicator, when i turned off airport ( the item needed to connect/use wifi) The battery levels were on the fritz. One moment it said i had over 6 hours of battery life, then 4 hours, then 5, then back to 6.
-Now are these problems i should be worries about? ( Keep in mind that this is a Brand New Macbook Pro, i've only had it for a few days)Also can someone perhaps help me find what OS i have? Should i not shut down my mac, and just let it sleep if i want to use it the next day? If i have my Mac plugged in ( charging) is that bad for the battery? Does it drain the battery or use electricity from the wall socket? Please reply, and thank you. I again apologize for the way i have brought up these topics, and for the ill use of terms for the applications and devices on the macbook pro.

I received my MBP on Wednesday, and when I first logged on I had the same problem with my airport card, it wouldn't hold the wireless connection. I added the MBP's MAC address to my wireless network and haven't lost the connection since(Unless I'm in a spot in my house that doesn't pick up the signal.). Have you tried that?
Your battery sounds fine to me, just because you have airport on doesn't mean that you will only get 4 hours. I can get more than 6 hours off a single charge with airport on the whole time. your battery time is calculated by how much CPU you are currently using. I got a time of three hours when I was using safari and downloading from ITunes, and had a few other apps open. Once ITunes and safari were closed and the only thing open was word the battery jumped right up 6 hours again.
I leave my MBP on sleep overnight if I know I will be going back to it early in the morning. If I won't be using it til later in the day I usually shut it down. Leaving the computer on sleep is just easier than shutting it down everyday, everything is still in the same place as the day before. As far as I know it's not bad for the battery.
Someone else on these forums can probably help you out better than I can with everything though.

  • Macbook Pro Ethernet heating, why?

I am a Mac newbie and I have a new Macbook Pro, 13 inches, mid-2012.
I used the Ethernet connection for wired Internet in my dorm room; but after using it for half an hour or so, the Ethernet port and the area nearby, started heating up. After it got considerably hot, I plugged the Ethernet cable out.
The cable is a CAT5e (not CAT6 for gigabit ethernet) and a rather cheap one, so I sincerely hope that this is the reason for the heating problem. Is it so? Any ideas?
    Thank you in advance, folks.

I am definitely not a technician and not a Mac expert because I have just been using a MacBook Pro for just about one year. However, I have noticed a pattern. I have had three irritating problems with my Mac. One is the one discussed in this thread; the occassional restart when I have left my Mac for a few hours. A second was that my fan stayed on and killed my battery when I had closed my lid and it was supposed to have been put it to sleep, and the third was that my Mac comes back from sleep with a gray background when I am using two monitors. The problem in this thread is the most serious because I have lost data from this problem. As I looked for solutions for all three, I found suggestions to reset the PRAM. I know this fixed my problem with the fan continuing to run. However, it is more difficult to determine if this temporarily helps with the other two problems or not because they are more random and less often. However, all three are definitely related to when the Mac goes to sleep incorrectly. I suspect that all three problems may have the same root problem.

  • MacBook Pro wireless problem

The airport card in my older MacBook Pro went out. Is there a USB wireless adapter specially made for Macs? I've been striking out at Fry's Electronics. Thank you.

I am having the exact same problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. It seemed that once I downloaded the latest firmware 7.4.2, I am getting connectivity issues to the Airport. I have a strong signal, but the base station disappears often, even when the laptop is sitting right next to. Signal strength is good throughout the house, but connectivity to internet is spotty at best. My iPhone can connect to the Airport with no issues and is able to connect to the internet.
I did a factory hard reset and went back to the 7.4.1 firmware, but still am having same issues. Sometimes I have great connectivity, but more often then not, I am getting nothing. My MacBook appears to be able to connect to other wireless networks, i.e. the one in the Apple Store. But I haven't been able to confirm if any other computers can connect continually to the Airport. I have perfect internet connection through the ethernet ports on the Airport. Interference might be contributing, but shouldn't have any issue with the laptop sitting right next to the base.
Is there anyway to run diagnostics on the wireless card or the base? I did the PRAM reset, but nothing changed. I am glad I am not the only one who is now experiencing this. Very frustrating because a week ago, I was working great and have been for over a year and half.
Looking for any other bright ideas on how to troubleshoot.

  • Weird 1st Gen Macbook Pro wireless problem

    Heya,
Recently i went on holidays for a week and left my macbook pro at home switched off.
Before I left it was working completely fine and would happily connected to my DLINK wireless router, as it had been for the previous few years.
Upon my return, i started my laptop only to find it was having trouble keeping a connection to the router. After about an hour it stopped connecting all together.
    Relevant info
    1) Router has been power cycled, as has the macbook pro.
    2) Router has been reset to factory default.
    3) Another macbook and ipod touch can see the router and connect fine using it
    4) I tried new user profile on the Macbook pro, as well as trashing the network prefs.
    5) I just finished doing a clean install on the macbook pro, and still no dice.
    7) I have reset NVRAM
    8) Both MB and MBP are running 10.5.7
    9) NO ONE TOUCHED THIS WHILE I WAS AWAY. The house was locked.
    10) Although it cant see the router, it can however create a network and also connect and keep a connection to another macbooks network, including shared internet.
The last one is the real strange part of this. At first i thought perhaps it was just the Airport dying, but the fact it can create a network aswell as connect to other networks create on other macbooks is a bit weird.
My neighbors WIFI usually comes up in the list of available networks, but this macbook pro is just not seeing ANY wireless networks that is originating from routers.
I just dont know what to do
I dont have the money to repair it, not to mention buy a replacement.. and i use wireless every day.
    any clues?
I have searched through the discussions, but anything similar i have found either have been unresolved or turn out to be something to do with the router.
but the router appears to be operating normally, i am current use it to write this post.

  • Retina Display MacBook Pro eye problem and strain

    Hi, the name is Ben
Recently, I boought a retina display and have since been having noticeable eye problem.
(strain, fatigue, oversensativity to computer monitor/screen ligthing)
My question was, has anyone been experiencing the same.
I use my computer pretty much all day, since my work/studies are all based on it.
Still, after 2 weeks of using retina display macbook pro, I have rapidely seen my eyes
starting to hurt, being oversensitive to computer monitor (not that I can't use any, but am
very sensitive to any lighting and need particular moderation in usage)
Now true, there ARE many good habits I did not know of before,(see some examples below)
that I am trying to adopt but still (reducing only in part the problem), I must say I am rather worried,
since I have never had any similar problem in 5 yearsof using my previous 13", macbook, mid 2007.
Any commments, or suggestion  (constructive of course) would be welcome.
(few examples of of good habits  I have tried so far)
    as regularly standing (/30 min),
look at something far away for 20 second (/20 min), blinking regularly, closing eyes for a moment,
adjusting lighting in work environnement, buying an antiglare film or device (nushield) , adjusting screen position,
not working to close to screen, using bigger fonts

an hour on my MBP by itself (someone else's office, a hotel room, an airplane, my lazy sofa) and my eyes lose the ability to focus --and I'm toast.
    Ok, I'll explain why.
First off your iPad and iPhone screen is smaller, thus doesn't reflect as much as a larger display will.
Your other displays are in a static environment where you have reduced the glare or it's been reduced just by chance.
When you take the glossy screen laptop to another location without adequate environmental features to reduce glare imposed (no overhead lights, closed windows, low light etc.) on the screen, thus your getting eyestrain from the glare.
It's caused by the slightly out of focus reflections verses the screen image, your eyes are automatically refocusing between the two images.
Your solution in this matter is to apply a anti-glare film to the laptops glossy screen, unfortunately it's going to cost money and be replaced often as it gets dirty, dries out and peels at edges etc.
Ideally a anti-glare matte screen would be the choice in the first place. I use my Mac for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and don't have the eyestrain problem anymore.

  • Adobe CS3 and MacBook Pro: any problems?

i am about to purchase a new 15" macbook pro and adobe cs3.
has anyone experienced problems or issues with cs3 running on their macbook pro?
    thanks!

    Hi,
I have purchased CS3 and I have a G5 Tower and a MBP dual 2 core (bought it 2 months ago)
Let me tell you that I am very unpleased with CS3 on both machines.
On the G5 it is 10 times slower than CS1 for some reason it takes a lot of processing power and RAM wich the G5 does poorly.
On the MBP it processes fine but I only have 1 Gig of RAM and I feel that I don't have enough. Plus it doesn't help that a laptop HD is slower at opening files so it really makes it look like it runs slow...I should of bought the 24in imac instead due to the fact that it doesn't cost 900$ to buy a extra 2 Gigs of RAM
    and the HD is faster

  • Macbook Pro Retina problem connecting to external monitor

    Hello Community,
I've been experiencing a problem, I bought a 13' Macbook Pro Retina. Not quite a cheap machine.
But when I connect through HDMI to my HP 23xi , the screen gets blurry and cut. I tried messing with the configurations, but it simply won't get better.
I presume it's because it is retina, of course. But I bought this monitor, a quite nice monitor a month ago, and I do not want to sell it nor throw it away.
    What should I do?
    My Kindest Regards,
    Luisvf7

    Hi luisvf7,
So it seems you are having issues with your MacBook Pro not displaying properly on your external display. It does sound like a frustrating situation. Let’s see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you use the steps in this article to troubleshoot the problem -
