Macbook pro Failure Code
I have a Macbook Pro 15inch which I purchased in November 2011 and I have a Failure Code on the hardware diagnostics showing 4MEM/61/40000000: 0X843ba098. What does this mean.
I double checked the RAM are seated correctly, reinstalled, switched the them around and still show the same error in report. I copied for your review, any ideas? Is there another scan or system test I can try?
Version: 3A222
Test Suite: Extended Test
Result: Failed
Failure Code:4MEM/9/40000000: 0x84675018

SMS Relay on MacBook Pro - Verification Code won't pop up.
Howdy!
Got everything updated to 8.1 and to Yosemite. Have a 4s, MacBook Pro and an iPad mini. Working on setting up the SMS relay for my wife. (These are all her devices). iPad fired up right away, no issues. Verification code came up, and voila! messages on both iPhone and iPad. Well and good. Then comes the MacBook. Not so lucky there. I've been working on it for about 2 hours now, and I'm coming to the community here to assist.
This is what i've done so far, after reading other community questions and following instructions:
1) Verified that iCloud address is the same on all devices.
2) Switched "send new messages from:" to the iCloud email. No Dice - Switched back to Phone number.
3) Signed out of iCloud on all devices, sign back in, and wait 15 minutes. Also No Dice. (Again, iPad fired up right away).
4) Turned Message forwarding on and off on iPhone about 6 times. Still No dice.
5) Verified that all are on the same Wifi network.
On trying all of these things, I still can't get the verification code to pop up on the MacBook. I'd appreciate any assistance/ideas/suggestions that y'all could offer.
Thanks in advance!Howdy!

Hello, I just bought this macbook off craigslist and I need to restore the computer to factory settings. I got it to go almost the entire way but then for some reason the download just stopped. So I tried it again and Everytime I get to the Internet recovery step( the very first step) I get the error code -2104F. Please help me, what can I do, what does the code even mean?
Howdy Walffe,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an issue with OS X Internet Recovery on a MacBook Pro that you just purchased. I imagine that would be frustrating, but I do want to point you to the article linked below which outlines the supported network configurations and protocols for Internet Recovery which may explain why you're running into the issue.

Liquid spill; macbook pro failure 6 mos. later?
I need some help on this one, sorry it's kind of long:
We bought a macbook pro from a large appliance store here in the chicago area at Christmas 08. We were told that while it was returned unit, it was in fine working condition. We had purchased extended warranties from this store before that covered physical damage, and used said warranty on a camcorder that one of my kids dropped. Since I have 2 tweens, I bought the extended coverage, was assured by the salesman that physical damage was covered.
Used the computer on a Sunday night, wouldn't turn on Monday morning. We brought it back to the appliance store, since it was only 6 mos. old and we had the extended warranty.
Results back were that the logic board, RAM, and fan were all shot due to massive corrosion. They said we spilled something in it. After researching online what happens when liquid is spilled in a laptop and the steps required to attempt to fix it, I knew we could not have spilled anything in it. Because my husband and I use it every day, we would have certainly known that there was a problem because it seems that if liquid is spilled it has to be taken care of immediately or the damage is immediate and fatal.
What we've theorized is that whoever returned it could have spilled something in it, let it dry out for a few days, and returned it. It would have started up and operated, so the store would have taken it back. Over the last 6 mos. that we owned it, is it possible that corrosion from whatever was left of the liquid spilled on it would be so pervasive that it would cause the massive system failure described above 6 mos. later?
Any help or insight would be appreciated.Yes, it's possible. That's actually why there are moisture sensors inside the case.

My MacBook Pro turned off whilst in use. When attempting to re-start, the HD light shows activity for about 5 seconds before going out and the machine will not boot. Nothing shows on the screen. The battery status indicated fully charged, and the power cord was connected when the problem ocurred.
Any suggestions about what the problem might be?Since you're still under warranty (and six months into your one-year warranty, it's a good idea to think about purchasing the AppleCare Extended Warranty) I would just take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine. If it's faulty hardware, not caused by user damage, they should fix the problem for no charge.
Good luck,

MacBook Pro failure to start up after update.
I updatd to the new apple software to my MacBook Pro and on its restart it loads to the point that it shows the apple symbol with a progress bar and then shuts down before I can get to the home screen. Have attempted a restart on 3 or 4 occasion with no success.
I have also attempted a genius bar appointment with no success due to no availability of appointments.
Any help would be appreciated?the following happens every time:
Starts up with apple logo
Shows my profile, I click and type in password
Apple logo stays and a loading bar starts (update progress?)
Bar progresses about 5% and stops, progress disappears,, MacBook shuts down.
Two possible issues.
1: Failed firmware update
2: Corrupted OS X boot and the at boot fsck drive repair can't fix it.
Run through this list of fixes, hopefully you have backups of your data off the machine.

MacBook pro morse code?!
I am in boot camp Windows 7 Enterprise, so I don't know if this is windows 7, but here's the story
==========
I came in my room, after I turned the display off by turning the brightness off, and the screen was flashing. I didn't think to much of it, until I noticed a pattern that resembled morse code. It would go -• -- •••(no, this isn't exact, I couldn't tell due to the speed) and then stops and does it like ten minutes later. This is why I am posting this on my iPad. What the **** is it?!
Thanks, CharlieJab
Here you go.

Macbook Pro Melted Its Own Casing - Expert eyes needed on this photo please of my macbook pro
This is a 2008 15" Macbook Pro.
At the genius bar I pointed out that the computer was so hot I could barely hold it, so hot the computer had warped it's own plastic casing where it connects to the power source.
So the genius guy took it in the back, opened it up, diagnosed a fried logic board and said "For $310 we'll fix up anything in the computer, you'll get it back good as new." In 2010 the logic board also fried and was replaced, and the heat cooling system was then replaced - looks like the same issue all over again.
So I took it home to get the data off the hard drive, but when I brought it back a few days ago, the new 'genius' made a different diagnosis.
Without barely looking at it, without taking it in the back, and without listening to or believing anything I told him, the Genius Bar are calling this impact damage - overriding the previous genius's assessment.
How can the perfectly symmetrical ripple wave in the plastic which goes top to bottom through a half inch of plastic be created by impact damage? And that the plastic piece below is not warped would mean I would have had to have removed the bottom piece of the computer, dropped it, then put it back on, in order for it to not be warped like its top half.
Are there any expert eyes out there who have an opinion on this keeping in mind the symptoms?
Additionally when the computer was its hottest, the trackpad would not click. The plastic must have expanded from the heat. So it would click, but only if I pressed really really hard. Doing this one day the plastic on the trackpad actually shattered from clicking it. But the shattering must have removed the surface pressure from the expanded plastic and therefore the trackpad became fully functional again in its shattered state and that's how I've been using it for quite some time.
I really appreciate any expert support from the community here if you disagree with the 2nd geniuses because I am complaining through official channels. I do not want to pay extra for damage the computer did to itself. Especially when this is the 2nd time the logic board fried on this computer.
I am someone who has owned apple's first everything since the 80's, and have worked on two Apple commercials myself. I'm currently typing this post from a PC... Does Apple want to satisfy its customers anymore or what?
I never did get a feeback solicitation emailed about this appointment either, I wonder why.
<Edited by Host>Each time I look at this post - the moderator has edited it again into something different than I said. Moderator, I'd prefer to remove this entirely if you are going to change the meaning of it. How do we do this? The above posts at 9:25a and 9:57a are not my language at all. And the moderator looks to have removed my ability to edit my post.
An update to the discussion (which I will repost separately when the moderator removes these ones which s/he's altered) - apparently this happened to other people as well - enough to bring a class action suit on apple forcing them to repair the issue:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2536493
http://gigaom.com/apple/is-apple-blind-to-nvidia-related-macbook-pro-failures/
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2675881?start=60&tstart=0
The Beverly Center apple store handled this 1000% better than the 3rd Street Promenade Store did - just got back the Macbook Pro, entirely repaired for $310, just like the 1st genius as 3rd Street Promenade told me would/should happen, overruling the 2nd set of geniuses Adrian, Phillipe and Matt.
I tried the 866 customer support # at apple to tell them about my unpleasant experience with 3rd Street Apple, and was routed around in circles being on hold for 12 minutes at a time - got nowhere. They told me I could give feedback at apple.com/feeback - but this site offers nowhere to plug in unpleasant experiences with the genius bar - only allow one to complain about equipment. So despite all the phone calls I've made, my experience has gone unheard by apple.
Though I've twice paid $300 to have the fried logic board replaced on this computer, I am asking apple to reverse the charges due to the class action and known issue with the NVIDIA graphics card on these models.
Not only did they replace the casing (which was melted), they replaced the battery which was leaking and had expanded, replaced the fried logic board, and the fried CD player. Additonally, when using this computer before, I periodically felt little shocks to my wrists where my skin contacted the edge of the casing. And the computer was so hot I couldn't hold it. If these aren't heat/power issues, I don't know what are. -

Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem.
Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
Step 3
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, if any. Be sure to disconnect all USB hubs. If you use a keyboard or mouse plugged into a hub, plug the devices directly into a built-in USB port and remove the hub. Test.
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator for this step.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for Diagnostic and Usage Messages. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.) Select the last few messages that appear, if any, and copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). -
Macbook Pro AHT Failure (graphics chip)
Im a bit confused. I ran the Apple hardware test on my 15" macbook pro (10 months old) before taking it if for repair as the superdrive was failing (not from over use). I was surprised to see that it had failed with 4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController as the error.
I told the genius guy about the error and they said they would look at that as well. I received a phone call to say that the drive was fixed but no mention of the hardware failure. After asking about the failure I was told that they ran their more advanced test and it had passed but he couldnt explain why it failed on the test I ran. He then asked if I had experienced any graphics issues. All I could think on was when playing Warcraft the fan fires up and the game would freeze randomly and you cant touch the bottom of the case as it would almost burn you. The guy just said oh sounds its over heating but the chip passed our test and so wouldnt do anything about it.
Now I dont know it the chip is faulty or not. Under diagnostics the only test that is showing is the one I ran. I have also just run the test and it still says its failed.
Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
*PCIe Lane Width: x1*
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3212
As you can see the PCIe width is now showing as x1 when it used to be x16. Anyone any ideas - do I go back to apple or just assume all is ok.The "PCle Lane Width: x1" rather than "x16" was cited in another thread as a possible early indication of the impending failure of the 8600M GT chip.
I am puzzled that their test didn't show anything, but I am wondering if they might have run it when your Mac was cold. Sometimes things have to warm up before a problem will show up. I once came to the Apple Store 30 minutes early just so I could let my ibook run the 20 minutes it had to before its freezing problem would manifest itself. Maybe you need to play Warcraft for a while and get your Mac nice and hot and let them run their test then.
Did you show them the PCLe Lane Width? I don't see how they could say the chip was OK with this obvious anomaly.
Just to talk to someone else, you might try calling Apple on the phone with your persistent error code and the PCLe Lane Width anomaly. I have heard that you can get a pretty quick turnaround when you send it off, and people seem to be generally happier with the quality of the work that is done.
Good luck! -
My MacBook Pro crashes randomly - suspect HW failure
My MacBook Pro crashes randomly and the crash log always shows something wrong with CPUs 6 and 7. I have tried to run benchmarks to stress the CPUs but that doesn't do the trick. Compiling with Xcode seems to crash "cc1plus" task, sometimes it's the kernel_task, but the rest of the log is always pretty much the same. I have run the Apple hardware test and another memory test - no failure there.

I heard that there were some problems with a few of the 15 inch macbook pros that were made Mid-2010 and that you could get a new motherboard installed FOR FREE if it was bought around that time. is this true?
It's true. Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro came with a defective NVIDIA GPU that causes unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
From what you say, it's probable that the GPU has failed, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller -
MacBook Pro won't start up... possible logic board failure?
I bought my MacBook pro in March 2008, 15 inch, and it is now out of apple care.
It freezes on start up on the white screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing.
Did hardware test and got error code 4SNS/1/40000000: TC0D - 107.500
Is this a logic board failure, or possibly something that could be fixed much easier and cheaper?
Thank you for any help.whitdare4 wrote:

That error code is listed as a hard drive sensor error. It may mean that the temp sensor on the hard drive needs to be replaced, or the logic board might be at fault.
It could also get caused from another fault peripheral device as the code describe generally a "connection fault".
You should remove usb mouse or other usb devices and try to boot in safe mode to eject all attached drives proper.

Multiple Hard Drive Failures on my Macbook Pro - Entourage reminders?
Over the past 2 months I've had three hard drives fail on three different macbook pro computers.
I've retraced my steps, searched many forums, and spoken with multiple Mac Geniuses but still can't figure out what's happening. The IT guy at work is about to kill me and I really want to figure out what's going wrong so I can fix it (or change my current behaviors).
Computer #1 - Out of the box, 2-3 weeks old. I took the computer home to do some work over the weekend. I didn't turn the it off before transporting it, but I did wait for it to go to sleep completely (I've since read that it takes a few moments while things in RAM switch over to the Hard Drive to save incase of power failure). I worked on it a bit at home, mostly just internet searches and a few word documents. When I returned to work my computer was running slowly and suddenly all of the programs locked. Since I've had this problem before with my personal computer (a G4 Powerbook), I tried the force quit options to no avail so I just held down the power key to power off. When I rebooted I got the dreaded "no" symbol.
Computer 2: IT gave me a used macbook pro that they repurposed for me. I made sure to shut down before transporting this computer. A few days later, before I even got to transfer all of my files, the computer started running slowly, programs locked. I eventually got the computer to shut itself down (as IT didn't want me to do a forced reboot) but upon restarting I got an even more dreaded screen, the folder with a question mark in it.
Computer 3: It was a fairly new computer, though a bit more ram, and probably only a few months old (used by a freelancer). It worked great. I took it home several times, transfered all of my files. Set up everything perfectly. Three weeks in, after working at my desk for about 4 hours, everything began to slow down. I called IT immediately and remotely sent a force shut down message. Nothing happened for about 15 minutes so I left for a meeting. I came back a few hours later and my computer was off. When it restarted, nothing appeared. There wasn't a "no" symbol or folder with a question mark in it, just a blank screen.
I've read and thought about all of the options.
- Large Magnet somewhere - It would have affected my personal computer (if at home) or my colleagues (if at work) or everyone else in nyc (while on the subway)
- Too hot - Possible I suppose, but how does running iTunes, powerpoint, and entourage do this?
- Downloaded something/Virus - We don't have administrative privileges. I can only update some software and send/receive folders. Plus, can any single file cause this much damage?
- Moved before asleep - This might have happened on the first computer, but I doubt it could happen to three. I always shut it down now before transporting, and I was sitting at my desk for hours before I had any trouble last time.
The one common factor that I haven't mentioned.
We use Entourage as a mail client here.
Each time the computer froze, the first things to freeze were the Entourage calendar reminders. Entourage seems to run strangely with the airport, but not with our LAN. When my computer froze last time, I had the aiport on but was working off the LAN. Could Entourage cause this much trouble? Has anyone else had trouble with entourage calendar reminders or failing hard drives?
Oh, and it also always happens on a Monday. I've taken the computers home multiple times though, so I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing during the transport or not, but the computer is always off now when I move it. I also cary my personal computer with me often, same routes and bags, so I'm not sure why it's not affected.

How crap is that?
It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.
