Macbook pro fan always on... and I've read all the threads.

Have read countless threads, but still no definitive answer that i've been able to understand: MBP fan runs constantly with CPU load very low.  i NEVER have a high CPU load when i look at activity monitor--(the highest CPU load when i look there is usually activity monitor itself!)
i am running 10.8.4 on a 15" MBP 2.53 core 2 duo early 2009.  when i'm running relatively simple processes--listening to music, pages, keynote, google searches online -- fans run almost all the time and surface of laptop is hot.  by comparison, i have a business MBP that is configured similar to this one--it's also a 15" 2.53 but an i5 -- it has less RAM than mine, but the fan almost never comes on, even when i run a bumch of stuff to TRY and make it come on.
any help out there?

1. Reset the SMC. Don't know which type battery your macbook has so both procedures are below.
2. Download and install iStatPro http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html so thatyou can actually monitor your temps and fan speeds.
MacBook and MacBook Pro
Laptops with a battery you can remove
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Newer Mac portables with a battery you don't remove
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
    1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
    2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
    3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times.

  • How do I connect TC to a new ethernet and share a new ethernet DSL with a new PC and use with my macbook Pro? I tried and get no internet on the PC or Macbook Pro?

how do I connect TC to a new ethernet and share a new ethernet DSL with a new PC and use with my macbook Pro? I tried and get no internet on the PC or Macbook Pro?

    Ok.
I am connected to wi-fi through TC connected to a specific router and is working perfectly and saving data through TM without any issues.
The TC version is 7.6.1 and am using OS 10.7.3
The router mode is on Bridge mode and router is connected to TC through USB cable, I suppose for internet access. My Mac is on wi-fi through TC
I have another location, much further, which recently have been installed with wi-fi through router that has WPA accessibiulity with password, 100% different than the current one.
Since, I will be most of my time in this new location, I wish to move my TC to this new location, and configure it in similar fashion like what I am having right now.
Naturally, I do not wish to lose any saved data on the TC.
Hope I managed to provide enought info.
    Thanks in advance

    likely display inverter board.
did you get your inverter board replaced already?
    Did you have a question?
If the diagnostic in shop indicates same, thats 1000X better than anyone can do online in "diagnosis" (not really genuine diagnosis of course)

  • Why is my macbook pro running so slow and how do I improve the speed?

why is my macbook pro running so slow and how do I improve the speed?

Write off the MS stuff as indicators for now--starting with Office 2008, they developed very long launch times. The time to launch 2008 on my old 1.25Ghz G4 and my MBP 2.2G are virtually the same. Even document opens/saves are slow compared to Office 2004 and earlier.
    1) You have adequate hard drive space so that eliminates one of the usual suspects.
    2) Check for runaway background processes. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage. Watch the processes "bubble" for about a minute to get a better picture of the usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated. My MBP shows nothing using more that about 5 percent on any given test run as long as I close all my user apps.
    3) If you have never done any sort of maintenance procedures, taht can slow you down. Simply restarting the computer a few times a week clear a lot of temporary files. You also may wish to review this article on the Mac OSX periodic maintenance scripts, which, if run, also do a lot of cleanup:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
There are other useful articles on file maintenance associated with the one. Here's the index:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
Check out articles with "Maintain" and "Tuning" in the titles.
    4) Use Disk Utility to check the SMART Status of your hard drive. A failing drive can make things slow before it makes things stop.

hi i;m using macbook pro . magic mouse pointer not moving, but do all the rest of things

thank you, i have tried you suggestion but it is still just prompting me to restart rather than allowing me to install the os from the os boot disk. the problem began when the macbook was just showing me a folder icon with a question mark on it rather than starting normally. reading through forums lead me to replace the hard drive and hard drive data cable to try and resolve the issue. however, even after having done this the folder with the question mark is still appearing. i cannot get the os istall disk to boot properly. it recognises that the disk is in the drive but continually prompts me to restart and wont allow me to boot from the disk. sorry if my previouse discription wasnt accurate. does this soun familliar and can you help with this more detailed discription of the problem? thank you.

. You do not need a seperate Apple ID. One one device you just need to go to Settings>Messages and add another/different Messaging email address and delete the common Apple ID address. Also see:

  • Macbook Pro 17 - 3 days and no problems at all!

I've had my 17 inch (week 21) Macbook Pro and have had NO problems at all. I was so worried after reading all the problems the 15 inch had and was also thinking about getting the Macbook (not pro). After spending 2 hours at the apple store I concluded the 17 runs cooler than the 15 and the larger screen real estate is ideal for me (I use Excel a lot for financial modeling).
I've had NO whines, moos, over-heating at all. The computer is whisper quite and works beautifully. I've installed both Bootcamp and Parallels and they work great. I've spent quite a bit of time at my local Panera making sure the wifi in Bootcamp and Parallels works, and I've had no problems.
I think Apple's got the kinks worked out and I would advise anyone sitting on the fence to get a Macbook Pro now. I got the Applecare also, so my mind is definitely at ease. I think I'm going to upgrade to 2 GB so I can allocate Windoze more memory under Parallels.

    Congratulations on the new machine!
I've had a 17" MBP for two weeks now and am generally satisfied. It only has two "issues". One is the CPU whine / hiss which is present when on AC power, particularly when charging the battery. I had two 15" MBPs before that whined / hissed much louder than this, this one is much softer but still noticeable in a quiet room, if you put your head to the keyboard or if you turn your ear towards it. I think I can live with it as long as it doesn't get any worse. The sound completely goes away when running on battery.
The other issue is a slight imperfection in the case above the latch button, the metal there slightly bulges out. Again, it doesn't affect the operation of the machine and is hardly noticeable. Would be great if the fit and finish were 100% perfect, but again, I can live with this. I've logged the issue with Applecare and might take it in at some point to have the metal straightened out, but for the moment I'm afraid that the repair centre would damage something else in the process!
Otherwise, very pleased with the machine, no other problems, screen shuts flat with no warping, keys are all flat and well aligned, all functions work normally, love the big screen, love the trackpad, and love the raw POWER!

  • My Macbook Pro fans always on

    Hi to everyone,
I just noticed some days ago that on my brand new MacBook Pro (5-6 months older) 2.3 ghz I7 with 10.8.5, the right and left fans are always on.
From what I can remember, in this months I never noticed something like this, I mean fans always on, especially when the mac wasn't run any application.
I don't use to install craps on the macs, I always used this philosophy, even if the Mac is less "fancy" and I always got great result, my Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz with 10.5.8 still working great!
I usually use it mainly for music production and daily net-mail works. I have for the 80% of the time the Mac connected with a NEC EX231W external display by thunderbolt, a Motu 4Pre, by the fw800, a WD usb3 hd on a usb port and a 4usb hub on the other port.
From what I can remember in the past months I neved had the fan always on, for most of the time they were really off and from the first moment I always use the set I metioned above.
So now I'm starting to be worry about, because I noticed that even when the mac is working with the battery, with no devices connected, running really few applications, not particualry heavy, the fans are always at 1998/2000 rpm.
Thanks to everyone can help me to fix this problem.

As we've repeatedly mentioned, the fans are designed to run all the time, in a 2000-6000 RPM range. If at any time speed falls to zero, "Houston, we have a problem" time has arrived. The heat load from the CPU (and GPU, if so equipped) would quickly reach the danger zone.
Why would you get a zero RPM reading? As usual, it is either a software or a hardware problem. Software: whatever it is you're using for the readout ain't getting it right OR there's a major "kunfuzzion" in there. Hardware: speed sensor(s) damaged OR fan(s) blocked and really not running. Either way, the issue needs to be addressed pronto, cause if "no fan(s)" is really  and truly NO FAN(S), Mac's gonna be kaput in no time.
Note that I say fan(s) cause we've yet to confirm if yours is a 15" unit. Those and the ancient 17" come with two fans. The 13" units have a single one.

  • Macbook pro fan always on

    Hi,
So as of a couple of days ago, whenever I use my macbook, doing some very basic tasks (like using the internet/word processing/whatever) the fan always revs up and works quite hard.
I am aware of that sometimes programs are stuck on high CPU (i.e. flash) and hence take up quite a bit of memory, but these last couple of days, nothing is out of the ordinary when I check the activity monitor and normal amount of memory is used.
So now my computer is constantly very hot and fan is always working hard? Any ideas how I can fix this?
I've attached two images of what the activity monitor usually looks like.
Could the fan have stuff stuck in it? If so, how can I fix it as I have a unibody macbook pro.
    Cheers!

Like stedman says, in activity monitor click where it says %CPU so it arranges the processes from highest to lowest to check if you have any runaway processes, and if you have any that are running at a high % (80%+) select them and click Quit process.
if there are no runaway processes try reseting the SMC

  • Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks.  PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know.  Thanks

  • Retina MacBook Pro fan very loud and usb mouse disconnecting when restarting the computer

2 days ago, I got a brand new retina MacBook Pro 13 inch with the specs 2.8 GhZ i7, 8 gigs of ram and 512gb ssd. It should definitely be functioning properly since it's a really expensive computer, but I already noticed a few problems that I hope you can  help me with.
So first of all, when I play World of Warcraft, the fan seems to go up to 6000rpm and is very loud. I checked the activity monitor and it says WoW is using about 60% CPU, so it shouldn't have to be that loud. I also installed smcfancontrol, but it doesn't seem to lower the speed of the fan.
I ran an apple diagnostics test and it couldn't find any problems, and I also tried resetting my smc, but the fan is still going very loud.
And the second problem I have is, that when I have my mouse usb connected to my Mac, and I restart it, it can't detect the mouse anymore. So I'd have to pull out the usb plug and put it back in everytime I turn on my computer. isn't it supposed to automatically connect to my mouse when it's already plugged in?

    Matt,
Try reading this, then go to the section on Resetting the SMC for a Macbook Pro with a battery you should not remove.

  • Macbook pro fan running fast and high cpu usage

    Hey emilyiow,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your MacBook Pro in relation to the fans. Sometimes, this symptom can indicate that the SMC needs to be reset. For more information and instructions on how to do so, check out this resource:

  • If I buy an external monitor (with a res of 2560x1440) will my early 2011 MacBook Pro work ok? And will it be utilising the monitors full res or not?

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I use Premiere Pro CS5 to video edit on. It's fine but when it comes to grading it's nearly impossible on such a small screen.
I'd like to buy a 27inch external monitor (Asus, Samsung, Dell, whatever - haven't decided yet) for when I'm editing at work (which is most days). My query is regarding the resolutions. Obviously my MacBook Pro displays a resolution of 1280x800, so if I buy a monitor with a resolution of 2560x1440 for example, what gets displayed?
And also does the connecting cable make any difference? For example, if I'm connecting by Thunderbolt out to HDMI, then an HDMI to HDMI cable to the external monitor, what happens then? Or should I be using a Mini Display Port to Display Port connecting lead?
I guess all I really want to know is, will it work? But also, am I wasting my money buying an external monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution? Should I just go for one that's the same res at my MacBook Pro?
I've never really understood how these things all work!
Thanks in advance for anyones help.
    Regards,
    Phil

I think it will work.  You would need a mini displayport to (single link) DVI adapter to hook up that monitor.
Not sure what kind of problems you had with the ViewSonic but I'm guessing the Dell is probably a better monitor anyhow.
