Macbook pro fans go from all the way off to all the way on?

Hi!
My Macbook pro's fans go from all the way off then to all the way on... there is no middle... This only seems to have happened after I upgraded to Lion.
I tryed reseting the SMC already to no avail...
Any help? Please??

Backup your user file folders to a external drive and disconnect.
Hold c and boot off the 10.6.x installer disk,
use Disk Utility to erase your entire drive (select the drive makers name) and format HFS+ Journaled,
quit and install 10.6, use the same hard drive name and user name as before,
log in, Software Update, restore programs from fresh sources,
return your files into their respective folders.
Carbon Copy Cloner your new fresh install to the external drive, it's hold the option key bootable.
Wait on Snow for aother 6 months, then clone again and disconnect, give Lion another whirl by holding option while clicking on Purchases in MacAppStore to download the installer again.
If you want to make "hold c" boot DVD's of Lion and Snow Leopard disks follow these links.

  • Retina MacBook Pro fan very loud and usb mouse disconnecting when restarting the computer

2 days ago, I got a brand new retina MacBook Pro 13 inch with the specs 2.8 GhZ i7, 8 gigs of ram and 512gb ssd. It should definitely be functioning properly since it's a really expensive computer, but I already noticed a few problems that I hope you can  help me with.
So first of all, when I play World of Warcraft, the fan seems to go up to 6000rpm and is very loud. I checked the activity monitor and it says WoW is using about 60% CPU, so it shouldn't have to be that loud. I also installed smcfancontrol, but it doesn't seem to lower the speed of the fan.
I ran an apple diagnostics test and it couldn't find any problems, and I also tried resetting my smc, but the fan is still going very loud.
And the second problem I have is, that when I have my mouse usb connected to my Mac, and I restart it, it can't detect the mouse anymore. So I'd have to pull out the usb plug and put it back in everytime I turn on my computer. isn't it supposed to automatically connect to my mouse when it's already plugged in?

    Matt,
Try reading this, then go to the section on Resetting the SMC for a Macbook Pro with a battery you should not remove.

  • Macbook Pro Fans Just Went Spinning Nuts

    Hi.
So I'm surfing the web (using firefox) have 2 tabs open and suddenly the fans on my macbook pro start to spin faster. Then they spin faster gain finally maxing out at 5360 rpm. The temperature all the time was never above 55 degress C. They spun at 5360 rpm for about 10 minutes and then spun down to a normal level of 3154 rpm.
I checked the processes and some kernal task is up at the top using 1.84 GB of virtual memory. No other programs running but plenty of other tasks listed as sleeping.
First question ... what is the max rpm that the fans should safely spin at?
Second question ... why would it suddenly take off like that spinning fans when there's only one program running?
I had an alienware before and it started running its fans like that after a few months ownership ... a few months later it chew the hard disk and lost a lot of data on me.

The maximum RPM for the MacBook Pro fans is 6000rpm.
I have no idea why the fans would suddenly "take off" like that but try running the Apple Hardware test. You can do this by inserting your original install disk 1, restart the computer with the D key held down until the hardware test starts loading. Once the test has loaded select the option to perform extended testing and then start the test. Note down any error codes and post them here.
Note that when you load the hardware test up the mouse will be very jittery and the computer will appear to freeze during the test, I have encountered this on all the tests I have run and consider it normal behaviour.
    Hope this helps

  • Macbook pro fan always on... and I've read all the threads.

Have read countless threads, but still no definitive answer that i've been able to understand: MBP fan runs constantly with CPU load very low.  i NEVER have a high CPU load when i look at activity monitor--(the highest CPU load when i look there is usually activity monitor itself!)
i am running 10.8.4 on a 15" MBP 2.53 core 2 duo early 2009.  when i'm running relatively simple processes--listening to music, pages, keynote, google searches online -- fans run almost all the time and surface of laptop is hot.  by comparison, i have a business MBP that is configured similar to this one--it's also a 15" 2.53 but an i5 -- it has less RAM than mine, but the fan almost never comes on, even when i run a bumch of stuff to TRY and make it come on.
    any help out there?

    1. Reset the SMC. Don't know which type battery your macbook has so both procedures are below.
    2. Download and install iStatPro http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html so thatyou can actually monitor your temps and fan speeds.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

  • I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 from the USA.  After installing Mavericks, Adobe CS6 crashes whenever it is plugged into a 27inch cinema display I purchased from the apple store in China (We moved to China). It works when not plugged into 27inch display.

I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 from the USA. It is now running Mavericks.  I connect it to a 27" Cinema Display that I bought in China after we moved to China.  Before I installed Mavericks, I could run all of the Adobe CS6 and Adobe CS5.5 applications on my Macbook Pro while connected to the cinema display. Now that I have Mavericks installed, whenever I am connected to my 27" CInema display my Adobe applications crash upon opening.  I know this is a rare scenario, but does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? Is there a new driver that needs installed?  I'd appreciate any help.

I am also having a similar issue. I used Adobe Lightroom and my whole display goes black. Even my laptop screen and the lights on the keyboard go black. I can still hear the fan running, so I assume it is just the display. This is my first Mac and I have had nothing but issues. I think I am going back to Windows after this.

    Hi...
    Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Control-F4
Move focus to the active (or next) window
    Shift-Control-F4
Move focus to the previously active window
By the way...  since you are new to Mac, click a clear space on your Desktop. You should see "Finder" top left corner of the screen in the menu bar.
Click Help then click Help Center
As an example type in    keyboard shortcuts
You can use the Help menu for almost any application on your Mac.

When I copy a CD onto my macbook pro I sometimes get several songs that are "out" of the album.  How do I get them all together in one album?  Any help will be much appreciated as I cannot seem to find the solution to this problem in the troubleshooting section of iTunes.

Generally all you need do is give tracks from the same album a common Album Artist. See Grouping tracks into albums. The images need an update but the basic info. still holds.

  • I have a 15' Macbook Pro, mid 2010 running Mavericks. I want to upgrade the hardware by increasing the RAM to 8GB and replacing the HD for a SDD one. What would be the best way to install mavericks on the new HD? I have the original OS X CD.

I have a 15' Macbook Pro, mid 2010 running Mavericks. I want to upgrade the hardware by increasing the RAM to 8GB and replacing the HD for a SDD one. What would be the best way to install mavericks on the new HD? I have the original OS X CD.
From what I read, I have 2 choices: 1. to install OSX and then upgrade to Mavericks, but I'm not sure if this would be possible (to upgrade directly from OSX to Mavericks); and 2. to use a software called Super Duper.
I wouldn't like to have to use a third party software to do this, so the question is: is there a better way to install directly the Mavericks not having to use a third party software?

Install the new drive in the computer.
Install the old drive in an external USB or Firewire enclosure.
Boot the computer from the Recovery HD on the external drive.
Use Disk Utility to partition and format the new internal drive.
Clone your external drive to the internal drive.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the Recovery HD on the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the Recovery HD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Using Disk Utility still opened.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

    BigTex415,
my condolences for your family’s loss. If all she seeks to do is to change the display name, and she’s willing to leave the account name unchanged, then she could do the following: log in as the administrative user and open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. If the padlock in the lower-left corner is locked, unlock it. Select the account that shows your brother-in-law’s name on the left-hand side of the window, and then on the right-hand side, change the text in the “Full name” textbox to her preferred display name. If desired, click on the padlock in the lower-left corner to relock it.

Goods delivered to you for personal or business use (not for resale) in Pennsylvania are subject to Pennsylvania state sales tax.
If you are exempt from Pennsylvania state sales tax, or are a Not-for-profit corporation and have a DBA certificate in Pennsylvania, you may be able to buy tax-free. I doubt this.
If you have the goods delivered to your address in Oregon, and there is no state sales tax in Oregon, you would not have to pay state sales tax.
Since Apple does business in all 50 states, they are also obligated to charge you sales tax (for the state where the goods are delivered) when you buy from the Apple Online store.

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)
