MacBook Pro fans running when plugged into Thunderbolt displays

I just got a sweet setup at work - a new MacBook Pro and 2 Thunderbolt displays. However, immediately upon setup I noticed the fans on the Mac Book operating constantly, even when I was just surfing the net or working in one Microsoft program.
I just spent a few hours working on the laptop - not plugged in to the Thunderbolt displays - and the fans did not go on at all. Within minutes of plugging it in to the displays, the fans started up again. So I think it may have something to do with the Mac Book being plugged into the Thunderbolt displays.
Can anyone help?
Mac Book Pro, Version 10.7.2, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Hello,
I'm so sorry for the slow response! I ended up calling Apple because I was still mystified and no one was responding here.
The nice gentleman at Apple told me the following. The MacBook Pro can handle two Thunderbolts max. If the CPU is constantly running hot, then it could be an issue in the long term.
We went through the software update process for the Thunderbolt displays again, and it turns out that the software was NOT updating!!! It's not the usual "click install and the computer takes care of it all" sort of update - unfortunately I don't remember exactly what we did, but you have to go to the Applications folder and actually install something.
You'll know if you haven't followed these steps if, when you go back to check for updates, the Thunderbolt display update keeps popping up.
Since installing that firmware update, I have been using my MacBook with only one display. In the next week, I will probably plug it in to the second display and see if there are fan issues. If so, then Apple told me to call them back and see about further troubleshooting.
I hope this was somewhat helpful. If you are still unclear, I'd say call Apple! They were really helpful! Good luck!

  • Toshiba backup drive not recognized when plugged into thunderbolt display.

My Toshiba backup drive does not mount to my MacBookPro when plugged into my Thunderbolt Display. It works beautifully when plugged directly into my MBP, and other USB devices work beautifully when plugged into the same USB ports on the Thunderbolt Display.
All my equipment is pretty new. The Toshiba is currenlty configured to be my Time Machine back up drive.
    Laptop: 15" Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 100 MHz DDR3, Mac OS 10.8.5
Backup Drive: Toshiba 500GB Canvio® Basics USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive
Apple Thunderbolt Display: 2560 x 1440, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
When I plug the backup drive into the TB Display, usually nothing happens. The blue light on the drive doesn't come on, and it doesn't mount to the desktop. If I wiggle the USB back there, sometimes the blue light will come on, and sometimes it will mount for a minute then go away. This is true for all 3 USB ports. I have not had problems with any other USB devices, but the only other ones I've plugged into the Thunderbolt are my keyboard, bluetooth headset charger, and other items that probably use less power than the backup drive.

But the cable works when plugged into my laptop. Plus, the cable connection is pretty specific to the device; I'm not sure if you can buy another one seperately.

  • Macbook Pro loses bluetooth functionality when plugged into thunderbolt display

This a fix that I think should be out there, because I searched and searched for months, then just found the solution myself. Want to make sure someone else doesn't have to deal with what I've been going through...
I've been dealing with bluetooth mouse, keyboard and trackpad dropping off unexpectedly on my MacbookPro Retina 15" ever since Yosemite. No bluetooth at all, even though it's showing that it is functioning normally. Usually this happened whenever I plugged in my thunderbolt monitor. It's maddening when you pop out for a meeting with your laptop, then get back to your desk ready to jam - then you're just frustrated clicking hopelessly on your mouse. Sometimes bluetooth comes backs, sometimes it doesn't until I restart. Turning bluetooth on or off had no affect. I came up with the weirdest fix yesterday, and so far it is working...
    1) turn your wifi off
    2) start clicking/moving your mouse, trackpad or keyboard until it gives you the "connected" notification on screen
    3) turn your wifi back on
Weird! I made the connection when seeing people griping about wifi being hampered when bluetooth was on in Yosemite, and thought it might go both ways. Hope this helps.

  • My MacBook Pro fan runs while sleeping

My MacBook Pro fan runs constantly, even while sleeping.
The problem started about 2-3 months ago, but was pretty rare. When I noticed the problem, I would restart the computer and it would stop for 1-2 weeks. More recently it has become more constant, and now it always has the fan running when it's sleeping.
Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks!

Mine too. If you're worried you might like to try a laptop cooler like one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_kk_2?rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Alaptop+cooling+pad&keywor ds=laptop+cooling+pad&ie=UTF8&qid=1344763538
Not sure how well they'd work on a Macbook as there aren't any vents on the underside but it couldn't hurt and they're quite cheep.

  • Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display crashes

I have a Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display which has recently started to crash.
Only modifications I have doen lately is I swapped the CD/DVD drive for a harddrive and put in 16 GB of ram
but it has been running for more than a month with these hardware additions without problems.
Today my Macbook has started to crash frequently within 10 min to 1 hour after plugging in my thunderbolt display.
I tried to check CPU heat, change RAM but it keps crashing.
When it crashes it either gives me a blue screen, a black screen or a distorts everythings and freeze up.
When rebooting I have to press Command-Option-P-R to clear NVRAM / PRAM.
I found a few support threads from people having similar problems so I started to disconnect the thunderbolt display
and without plugging it in my laptop works fine.
I have done a SMC reset also but that has not resolved my issue.
Below is the crash report and if anybody has any suggestions what to do to resolve this please let me know
My thunderbolt display was purchased in late 2011
If this is not solveable what options do I have ?
    Thanks !

The other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before.  Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas??  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop.

  • Will my MacBook Pro from 2008 work with the Thunderbolt Display? Or will I need an adapter?

Will my MacBook Pro from 2008 work with the Thunderbolt Display? Or will I need an adapter? I like to have two monitors and currently using an Cinema Display from 2005. Thanks

If your computer does not have Thunderbolt you cannot use a Thunderbolt display.  There are no adapters that will help.

  • MacBook Pro fans running constantly?

I have had a MacBook Pro (2011) running OS X Lion then OS X Mountain Lion since last August. For the past couple of months, I've had a problem with the fans on the laptop. I made my first trip to the Genius Bar because the fans seemed like they weren't even working. The fans got extremely loud, making strange buzzing / humming noises, and the laptop got very hot. Apple replaced the fans free-of-charge, and I was out of there. Not one week later, the fans started up again with a new problem. When the fans started going, and the laptop became very hot, the screen would shut itself off at random times. So for about 3-5 seconds, the keyboard / display would shut off, with the laptop still up and running (I could still hear the fans.) I went back to the Apple Store last week to get it fixed. They kept it for 3 days to run a full diagnostic, and they discovered... nothing. The paper they gave back stated "No Trouble Found" and I went home without a solution. I've been looking up my problem, and it seems a lot of people have it. So I checked out the Activity Monitor, to see what came up... I would post the numbers on here, but they're rapidly changing... What does that mean? My friend and I both got our MacBook Pros at the same time, and his has no problems, so I compared what we both used them for. He mostly uses his at home for photo editing and Safari. I use mine all-day, every day for school work. So am I overusing the laptop? Also, when I charge the laptop, I don't shut it down, I just close the lid and plug it in... I actually rarely shut down my laptop altogether. Can this be the problem? Sorry I'm writing so much, but this problem has become really annoying, and I want it to be fixed before school starts in a few days. I'm pretty much writing every possible reason that has come to mind why this has been happening...
    Please answer, ASAP

    plane928,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller?

  • Mainstage 2.1 makes my Macbook Pro fans run full bore.

Upgraded to V. 2.1 and Snow Leopard. Now my Macbook Pro fan kicks in at full blast whenever I play any patches or run backing tracks. Cpu hit looks low and memory usage is average. This never happened before. Any ideas as to what's happening?

My MBP fans have always run at full capacity when using MS 1, 2 or 2.1. They start out running normally but then start to rev up after a couple of minutes. You could try running some fan control software to manually adjust your fan thresholds but ultimately, does it really matter if the fans are running hard? Seems to me that they're running hard because they need to....MS is still very hard on system resources even if the meters say otherwise. It's the only app I run that causes the fans to run flat-out.

  • MacBook Pro Fans Running Fast

My mom's 2007 17" MacBook Pro keeps running its fans. Both fans run at 3400RPM minimum when it is awake. There is no fan-controlling utility installed. Is it normal for them to be running that fast? Also, the temperature (147˚F) seems a bit high.

Yeah, only running Mail and stuff. Actually, 3500RPM is my iMac's maximum fan speed.
    I'll try the SMC reset.

  • Macbook pro fan running slow

macbook pro fan is running slow and hot.  it fluctuates between 212 and 375 rpms.  heat rises up to 104c.  do i need to replace the fan?

Before I suggest advice, I urge you to keep your machine under 160F at all times. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but you can seriously damage your machine with that kind of use. Some solders melt at 225F, weaken at 190F.
You may have to replace the fan - or you may need to clean the inside of your machine and fan. It's hard to tell without inspecting your machine.
Or you may find that you need to get a different browser, and become more aware of temperature; laptop machines are much more sensitive to termperature issues than desktop Macs. Some day, you'll thank me for that advice.

  • Why is my macbook pro fan running so frequently and staying so hot?

It seems like recently my MacBook Pro 5 has issues with being too hot.  Is this a result of keeping too many applications open?
    Thanks,

Make sure nothing is blocking the vents.
According to the user manual it states in part:"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."
MacBook Pro: Care, Use, and Safety Information
"Do not place your MacBook Pro on your lap or other body surface for extended periods of time. Prolonged body contact can cause discomfort and potentially a burn."

  • Wireless issues when plugging into Mac display

I have noticed that no matter where I am in the house, my Macbook Pro works with my Airport just fine. But when I plug the laptop into a 24" display, my wireless signal does one of two things: it drops a connection, going from full strength to nothing and back again, bouncing back and forth in a slow rhythm, or it will give me a huge drop in strength. Anybody have any idea why this is? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I also have the same issue, specifically similar to that of DimBimbleby, since I am using my MacBook (2008) connected to one of the Apple 24" LED Displays via an Altona converter in the mini-DVI port. The laptop works excellently when not plugged into the display, as do my DVD player (streaming Netflix) and my AppleTV (will never figure out why I bought that) - as soon as the monitor is plugged in, the internet is either extremely sluggish or does not work at all. It took me a bit to figure out that it was only after the display is connected (moved both things all around the house of course). Does anyone at all have ANY idea how to fix it or improve it?? It's really frustrating and I certainly did not pay all that $$ for the display for it not to work with internet. I recently sold an older style 20" ACD Monitor which never had a single issue working with the internet. I have a Linksys Wireless-N router which is not the greatest ever but works well with everything else. Please help!!!!!

  • Macbook Pro 13" Screen went Black - Can only see when plugged into another display! HELP!

My MacBook Pro's screen went black last night and now when it turns on it stays black. I plugged it into my tv through the mini display port and I can see everything fine on the tv but the screen on my laptop is black. Everything else seems to be working fine. Any advice that doesn't involve taking to Genius Bar??? Already tried booting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM and NVRAM. Need to fix this ASAP. Thanks!!

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Macbook Pro Fans Running At Full Speed When Macbook is Very Cooool

Ok, So now i'm pretty sick of the fan noise.
I've done PRAM reset, Power Management Reset to no luck.
So i decided to do some experiments.
As soon as the computer starts, Fans spool up to 6,000 and stay there. CPU Temp 42 Degrees Celsius.
Now My CPU temp does pretty well staying there. In Activity Monitor, No Processes of what so ever. Computer idles at 99% and only 1% being used by system.
So i decided to put the computer in the fridge. As soon as the temps went down 5 Degrees, to like 30 to 35 Degree Celsius, Fans idled at 2000 and as soon as the CPU temp is 40 Degrees, Fans spooled up and kept going all the way back to 6,000.
See as the temp drops on the computer, the fans do slow back down as the CPU temp drops from 40 to 35.
I called apple and the apple tech i talked to said that it seems the fan specs might be set out of whack. Meaning, the temps as which the monitor spools up the fans is set to low. He said it should be around 50 to 60 even 70 Degrees Celsius's before fans should spool up. He said the problem isn't the monitoring system since it does appear to be slowing down and speeding up the fans between 30 to 40 Degrees but it's spooling the fans up and to low of a temp than needed. He told me to take it to a Mac Genius sometime soon.
so before i do that, any apple geniuses what to take a stab on whats wrong and why it's doing this?

My fan runs continually, BUT, with several monitors watching core AND fan exhaust temps I have noticed something strange. The core indicates 28C while the exhaust jumps from 42C DOWN to -128C and then the fan races. While this is keeping the book cool as a cucumber it is driving my wife and now me up the wall. NO I don't have any hung processes. NO the CPU is not caught in a cycle requiring massive computing power. Regardless of the temp the fan runs at the 6200RPM max. Zapping PRAM and resetting the System Management will soon be followed by gravity resetting through my 2nd story apartment window. One way or another this needs to stop!
