Macbook Pro finicky about connecting to internet

My 2009 MacBook Pro suddenly started having problems connecting to the internet wirlessly. I use a D-link router (WBR-2310) connecting to a Westell Modem that has the DSL connection from AT&T. The Mac connects pretty well when using an ethernet cable from the wireless router and also connects wirelessly when I do not enable security on my D-link router but when I enable security its connecting ability becomes very erratic. On  rare occasions it will connect but most of the time it will not and I will spend about 30 minutes or more doing various things in the network preferences tab such as running diagnostics or the connection assistant or deleting the keychain for the network and re-entering under join other network and finally after about 30 minutes it may decide to finally connect. Often times when I first turn on the computer the airport will be on but the airport bars in the tab bar are grey then I will click on join other networks and manually enter the network name (even though the Mac already has this info) and select the security type and re-enter the password and the airport bars will fill in black but I will still be unable to connect to the internet. When I run network diagnostics it will have a green light next to Airport and AirPort Settings, a yellow light next to Network Settings and a red light next to ISP, Internet and Server. Often times if I change the TCP/IP to DHCP from Bootp the Mac will aquire a ip address but still will not connect to the internet. Today I configured the IPv4 address manually and was able to get on the internet wirelessly while typing this actually and when I ran a diagnostics so I could better illustrate the problems I was having it got hung up again and I lost my connection. This time the diagnostics had a green light next to network settings but red lights next to ISP, Internet and Server. I appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Hey andyjcmrdn,
I know it is an old thread but I wanted to share my solution anyway. It might be useful for some others. I found a thread somewhere mentioning that wbr-2310 is an old version router with a new shell on it. It was recommended to use the firmware from that model of Dlink (DI624). I gave it a try and used the firmware that I found. It seems like it is working now. I was having dropping issues with both my air and iphone 4, they would drop out during the day several times.

I am using WPA2 Personal with DHCP on.
I hope it will be useful for someone.

  • Macbook Pro won't connect to internet, says ISP has failed.

For months I have not been able to connect to my internet at home from my MacBook Pro. I have tried restarting the router many times. All of my other devices, as well as my roommates' devices connect to the internet. My wifi icon at the top says that it has connected but that the ISP has failed when I refer to the diagnostics. I've tried countless troubleshooting articles and none have worked so far. Any suggestions?

Im going to answer my own question. Problem Fixed! After I was on the phone for over an hour with a senior advisor we found the problem was with the download or the instilation. He had me Shut Down Computer and hold down Command and R then press power button hold this down until the recovery window pops up. Then reinstall mountain lion os system. this does not wipe out documents, photos and apps like windows does. I didnt know this since Im new to MacBooks. Hopefully this may help someone else.
PS I beleive In order to do this you need to be plugged into your router to have internet access. They had me do this. This will take about an hour but now Im up and running.

  • MacBook Pro won't connect to internet

    Hi,
When I turned my 13'' MacBook Pro on this morning, it had reset the date to 1st January 2001 and deleted all my wi-fi network preferences. Every time I try to log on to the internet, it says there's been a timeout in the connection. The wi-fi works fine om my iPod, and I've tried rebooting everything, but nothing works. I have no idea what to do.

I got exactly the same problem yesterday. After the battery running flat, I found that my MBP have the date reset to 01 jan 2001. I don't think flat battery should reset the system date. So something must be going on here. And now I can't connect to the Internet through wifi. Airport still can see access point, can join the access point but gives me no connection whatsoever.
karajdaar, what did PRAM reset solve for you? Does it take the date back to current or solve your internet connection or both?
IneKjolner, have you solved your problem with your macbook?
Anyone has an idea why MBP reset the date? thanks.

  • Macbook Pro won't connect to internet. Yet says it is connecte to wifi.

So I can't seem to acess my wifi on my new macbook pro even though I can acess it on my PowerBook G4.
At first it said it wouldn't connect/ couldnt find IP adress, so I entered the IP information from my G4 and it said it was connected but still could not veiw web pages. I tried renewing the DHCP lease several times but still could not get a Router #. I also tried using Keychain first aid.

Speak to the person who runs the internet connection for your school. they may need to accept you ip address into the system

  • New Macbook Pro will not connect to internet

    It says Airport status ON
Airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.82.29 and will not be able to connect to the internet.
Does anyone know what this means. I am going crazy with no internet. Thanks

A self-assigned IP address just means that your computer isn't connected to anything that can assign it a "real" IP address.
Do you see the AirPort menu item (a series of arcs) in the menu bar? If so, are the arcs gray or black? If they're gray, you're not connected to any wireless network. Do you have your own Wi-Fi network or are you trying to use another one? If you pull down the AirPort menu bar item, do you see one or more wireless networks in the list?

  • My macbook pro won't connect to internet and won't shut off.  Any suggestions?

My machine appears to be operating normally except that it won't connect to wifi and won't restart or shut down.
I've tried Command q'ing all running programs and still nothing.
    Guidance would be much appreciated.

You could also try a Safe Boot - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564 - I would also make sure to get permissions repaired.
There are a host of other means to try, but these are a good start.

  • After sleeping - Macbook Pro won't connect to Internet unless I restart it

Ever since from the update I got for the airport, I had to restart mbp after its sleep mode if I want to go surfing online... how do I ensure that I don't need to do this each time? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Try zapping (resetting) the PRAM: Turn the MBP off, then, when you restart, hold down the -Option-P-R keys. It will chime, then restart and chime again. Let this happen twice (2 or 3 chimes) and then release the keys.
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.
For good luck, repair disk permissions:
From the Finder, click on "GO", then "Utilities" on the drop down menu. Open Disk Utility, select your Mac HD, and click on repair disk permissions.
    Good luck!

  • My MacBook Pro won't connect to the Internet, but my phone and PC will.

My MacBook Pro won't connect to the Internet. My iPhone has no problem doing so, and neither does my PC. I think it's something to do with my DNS, but I'm not sure. My network connections say that both my Ethernet or FireWire are failed. What's wrong with my MacBook? Is there a simple way to fix this?

Hi, I had been having the same problem for over a week, but both my window's HP and my 2011 macbook pro barely could load youtube.  What kind of router you have?  I was using a belkin play router that was only 8 months old, switched to a new AirPort Extreme Base Station and now everything works perfect.

  • MacBook Pro won't connect to wireless network unless tilted

Hi! My MacBook Pro occasionally has trouble connecting to the wireless network in my house, but that can usually be solved by turning Airport off and then back on. Today (very suddenly), Airport disconnected from my network and could not find it again. I tried restarting my MacBook Pro and router multiple times. Finally it was able to connect, but here's the thing: it only works if my MacBook is tilted at an angle. If I try to open a webpage while the MacBook is sitting normally on a flat surface, the page won't load. If I lift one side of the MacBook so that it's tilted at a 45 degree angle, the page will load. Once it's level again the internet will stop working and the Airport signal bars will turn gray.
I've never come across a problem like this before. Everything was running fine this morning. It is so strange and I have no idea what to do! Help, please? Is my Airport dying? Is something loose inside? My MacBook Pro is about 4 years old.

Delete your network from system preferences, network, advanced.
re enter your network you wish to join
If that fails then do a PRAM reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and a SMC reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Maybe something to do with the motion sensor
if so try resetting the SMC
