Macbook pro flickers

Hi,
I am using a late 2011 macbook pro with i7 processor and 4 gb ram,
When i switch between applications in fullscreen mode files in finder are flickering,
I gave it in teh icare and they did a clean install of mountain lion and i didnt find the fault when i was in icare and after getting home this problem still persists,
When i do a safe boot its flickering like ****
I recorded a video and uploaded it to youtube here is the video link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ptndoY23bY
Can someone help me find where the problem is as teh icare couldnot find any glitches in the hardware too

A small update which might or might not be useful. I went in to the Apple store to get an idea of what was going on. I took my HP w2338h monitor along so they could tell what was going on.
We ended up testing everything without using my power adapter. The MBP displayed flawlessly not only on a Dell external display (at a lower resolution) but also on an Apple Cinema Display and to my chagrin - on my HP w2338h monitor too. There was no visible flicker at the time and although we tried hard by loading the system and so on CPU-wise, there was no perceptible flicker.
Note: The flicker I am experiencing is different from that others are. My flicker seems to occur when I am using the NVidia GT 300 only!
Anyone has any clues as to why this might be the case???

  • 13.3" macbook pro flickering screen when waking from sleep

I have a Mid 2012 13.3" MacBook Pro (non-Retina) laptop that has been working well, until the last few days.  The laptop has had no physical damage and no liquid damage.  I have put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid.  When the laptop lid is raised and the laptop turns on this last week I have noticed that the screen flickers and then appears to be on, but the screen is a grey color.  I have been able to press the power button to put the computer back to sleep.  Usually when pressing the power button to wake it from sleep the screen issues have cleared up.
Is there a known issue that may cause the issue with the flickering/grey screen or could there be a short in the wiring that powers the screen?

    Hey there Oregan Mac User,
It sounds like you are getting screen flickers when trying to wake your device from sleep. I recommend the troubleshooting form the article named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • 17" unibody MacBook Pro Flickering -Explanation

Like many other users here I have been experiencing flickering on my new 17" MacBook Pro when the display is set to low brightness settings. In my case the screen flickers whether running off battery or off the wall, and whether the battery is full or not. However, after conducting some tests I believe that all instances of this screen flicker stem from the same root problem.
My screen flickers more at certain times than at others. The first thing I did was try to isolate what made the flickering more severe. In my case, this is what I found
1)whenever the cpu is under heavy load
2)whenever any peripherals, especially bus-powered ones, are connected to the usb or firewire ports
3)whenever there is heavy disk activity on the internal HDD
4)when connecting or disconnecting the magsafe (screen flickers violently for 2-3 seconds!)
Bus-powered peripherals draw power from the laptop in order to run. The more devices I have hooked up to my machine, the more the screen flickers- in the case of a usb hub or daisy chained firewire, adding more devices does not draw more voltage (because it is all parallel) but it certainly draws more current. This is in effect robbing the LCD of amperage, causing the flicker.
CPU load works the same way. Intel has a technology called SpeedStep that they've implemented on all their mobile CPU's. The way SpeedStep works is that it dynamically scales the frequency of your CPU so that if you aren't demanding much of the system, the CPU is downclocked to reduce power draw and save you precious battery life. As you make increasing heavy cpu load requests, the SpeedStep throttles the CPU upwards which increases the voltage it draws. We're only talking about a difference of about .75 volts, but it seems that is enough to produce more violent flicker as the LCD becomes starved for power.
HDD activity is the same thing. The servos that move the head and spin the disk all draw power when they are moving. Although I haven't tried it yet, some users here have reported worse flickering when loading/reading from the optical drive, which again suggests a power issue. Obviously disconnecting and reconnecting the magsafe cycles the computer from battery to AC, which is clearly power related (although I am not sure exactly how yet).
Some component is failing (a switched or linear regulator or diode most likely) that is making our machines unable to handle any current draw whatsoever. Because they cannot keep up with the demand for amperage, the voltage in the machine fluctuates and drops below the proper level, producing the flicker.
I'm not sure exactly why the flickering is only visible on low brightness settings; there could be a number of explanations, including the fact that the flickering is subtle enough that the difference between max brightness and slightly-less-than-max brightness is not detectable by the eye, whereas the difference between low brightness and lower brightness is. I have a theory that is pure speculation on my part, but I'll include it here in case anyone more knowledgeable about displays can comment on its likelihood. As I understand it, the LED's rapidly oscillate between on/off states to produce the illusion of low brightness. In order to trick the "refresh rate of our eyes," these oscillations must be very precise. Perhaps the fluctuating voltage levels in the machine are throwing off the clock controlling these oscillations.
In any case, I would guess that the flickering screen is merely a symptom of a much deeper systemic problem effecting every module in the machine. If dirty power is running around everywhere, this is not good. This would effect every component down the power rail. I would not wait to exchange these machines.
The good news is that Apple Engineering is aware of this problem and are anxious to get affected machines back to isolate exactly what is going wrong. I wouldn't bother going to the genius bar as they have no idea what is going on and generally have no grasp of the architecture of these machines anyway- if it's not a problem they can resolve in the GUI, they are completely useless. Just call Apple Care and escalate it past the subordinates who will tell you that you just need to reset the PRAM or wait for a firmware update (all lies btw). Once you get to someone at a hight level they will give you the straight dope and set up a replacement.
    Hope this was helpful!

Interesting theory, but I'm running a powered USB hub, so I'm not drawing down the USB ports and connecting/disconnecting magsafe also doesn't trigger the problem. I do have many FW drives daisy-chained, but none are bus powered.
It's not a backlight issue - when it's not affecting the entire screen, it looks like a GUI redraw problem. The whole screen flash could be the backlight going off/on, but it doesn't look like it to me.
I've seen the flash and flicker at various screen brightnesses, so it doesn't seem related to low brightness. I spent a day or more importing CDs, which although isn't a super high cpu load, it was enough to bring the temps up. Internal HD was cranking away, too, and I had no symptoms of the problem.
When I got to my machine this morning, and woke the display [only], I got both the full screen flash and the partial redraw flash/flicker [lower 1/4 or so of screen].
Over the last couple of days, waking from sleep seemed to trigger the problem. The resolution seems to be a restart and/or powerdown, then restart. Though I've seen the problem on both GPU's, it seems more prevalent on the 9600M, but I don't have any data on it yet.
I've started a log for tracking when the problem occurs, under what conditions (including last app used), and what I did to attempt to "fix" the problem.

  • Using iMac as external display from Macbook Pro flickers static and crackles.

I'm trying to use my iMac as an external display.
When I plug in my early 2011 Macbook Pro into my Mid 2010 iMac via a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, the iMac screen flickers with static and there's random crackling noises.
Weird thing is, when I try the same thing with a new Macbook Air, everything works perfectly!
    Here's a quick video demonstrating what I'm talking about - http://youtu.be/xxTXVRffWwE
Are the two not compatible or do I just have a defective Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro works fine with the Cinema Display I have in the office...

Huh, It should work like this:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    iMac Model
    Cable Supported
    Port on Source Computer
    iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
    Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
    Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"
Does that seem contradictory to you?

  • MacBook Pro Flickering LED : Any Solution?

Hello! i Saw many, many users have a flickering LED display problem on the MacBook pro. I have not come across any viable answer/solution yet. is there any at all?
does anyone know that a particular firmware/software upgrade will solve it
does anyone know if its a hardware issue and needs the LED/Logic Board changed/fixed?
does anyone nowif its because of the graphics cards, and some graphics card setting or software updates will fix it?
has the flickering LED display on new MacBook Pros been fixed on anyone's machine?
I have a MacBook Pro 2.8 Ghz, 15 Inch, 10.5.7, bought a month back (i was waiting to upgrade to Snow Leopard once and for all). The LED Flickers pretty bad. Bought the machine 1 month back.
I have used macs since the LC475. Never ever have I heard of so many problems with Macs as I hear them now.

hi. I have a new 13" Macbook Pro 2.26ghz with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card and I'm starting to get a flickering screen when my computer gets really hot for long periods of time such as when gaming. I believe the problem is caused by overheating. I play warcraft III and there's no way my brand new Macbook Pro's graphics card can't handle those graphics. I also play warcraft III on my 7 year old Mac G4 (533mhz CPU with it's very old graphics card) without issues so there's no way a brand new much faster Macbook Pro can't handle those demands. Earlier NVIDIA cards had overheating issues which is another reason I think it's an NVIDIA overheating issue. I don't remember if it also happens while playing videos but I'll check. The problems don't happen much but when they do they are noticeable and not good. So far the flicker doesn't last long and maybe there's only 3 or 4 events when they happen.
If anyone else has more information about this please post here!
    Thanks

  • Macbook Pro "flickers" between battery mode and AC mode?

Hey guys, I'm on the newest update of OSX 10.8.1 and I just noticed that my old 2008 Macbook Pro is acting kind of funny.  I read that the laptops are designed so that after a full charge, it will run off battery power until XX% before recharging again.  This guy is flickering between full and 98%, which is slightly frustrating considering they have different lightness levels.
This didn't happen in 10.8, so I'm not quite sure what the update did.  I think some other people are having battery troubles with the new update as well.
I'm not sure why this $2000 machine has more problems than my 10 year old $400 laptop, but it seems apple doesn't really provide support for the older models?  I would be very grateful if I got a response other than the "did you try rebooting it?/resetting the PRAM" and the "just buy another/newer xx."  Thanks in advance

  • 2011 15" MacBook Pro flickering integrated video

Is anyone else seeing this? I have a 15" Early 2011 MacBook Pro. When running on integrated video, fairly common gradients will cause the screen to flicker. I made a test image you can find here: http://i.imgur.com/aIonB8H.png. It must be zoomed to actual size. Apple are saying this is normal behavior, but it doesn't happen on discrete video, and I'm pretty sure an image isn't supposed to cause screen flicker like this. It's not a software thing, as several clean installs have proven.

This is happening to me, but only after my 2011 15" MBP went to the Apple repair depot and had the logic board replaced.  It was not happening before.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Flickering

I had my screen replaced because I had the image retention issue that most LG screens had.
Ever since I got it replaced my screen will flicker randomly.
I got some video of it and hope they will replace it.
What is your experience with this isssue?
(While I was getting my screen replaced I saw someone with a 13inch retina that reported flickering.
Also while they had my device the first time they replaced the logic board.)

  • MacBook Pro flickering when scrolling Mac OS X Mavericks

    Hello All,
I started noticing the flickering with Mountain Lion, specifically with the last patch before Mavericks.  I upgraded to Mavericks and the problem has aggravated. The flickering is really bad in Safari and when using the genie effect and magnification turned on for the Dock.  If I turn Safari to full screen, the problem doesn't disappear but it becomes less annoying.  In Chrome however, the problem is noticeable but not as annoying as in Safari when in regular sized window.  While in Finder, the problem does not happen at all.  I tried to see if Maps had the problem but I couldn't see any difference whatsoever in full screen mode or regular sized window.  I turned my screen capture software and when I went to review it, everything was perfect in the recording.  No flickering whatsoever.  So my guess is that it must be some sort of bad code or just needs a tweak.  Hopefully the folks at Apple are taking notice of this and rolls out an update soon.  If anyone has the same issue, please reply that way the folks at Apple can do something.  Thanks.

  • Macbook pro flickering

    Hello,
Unfortunately, the problem started when i installed "Mavericks", and my computer was already out of warranty. I bought it in January 2013.
As the problem is well-known by apple since 2012, i feel like i was sold a computer with a hidden defect.
I'm wondering, have you found a real fix to this solution ? Other that changing Wifi Channel, resseting PRAM, reinstalling Mavericks (i tried them all). Stopping wifi seems to fix this bug as a lot of people tell, but this is not a solution.
Hope you can help me as it is very annoying.  Thanks
    Best regards,
    Clement.

Diagnostic testing is FREE at the AS & AASP.  Strongly suggest that you take advantage of it.  This way you will get confirmation of what is exactly wrong w/your MBP.
Too bad you didn't consider purchasing AC.

  • Photoshop CC flickering on Macbook Pro?

    Hey guys.
So I got a new Macbook Pro less than a month ago, mostly for drawing and such. I've encountered a problem, though, and that is that when I use Photoshop CC, the screen flickers! Not the entire screen, but the window in photoshop. This seems to only happen if I'm using my tablet, as well.
I spoke to Apple several times about this issue but they told me that there was nothing they could do and that I should speak to Adobe. They just linked me to some updates that didn't work and that was that.
I've seen many, many, MANY people having this issue on the Macbook Air, but they have a fix now. I haven't seen so many people with the Pros having this problem, but there are a few, such as here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5955871
Sometimes it doesn't flicker, but most of the time it does. I've updated everything that I could think of. This is causing a real problem though; it's nearly impossible to work on any project at all anymore!

This is happening on my end as well. Moving text, painting, etc. causes the display to flicker. I tried diffrent Graphics Processor Settings in the preferences, but did not notice any improvement.
    Adobe, please fix this bug!

  • Macbook pro - Display flickering stripes

    Hello,
i'm having, again, an issue with my macbook pro 17' mid 2010.
    This is my story
I bought it in July 2010, it worked fine until one month after the end of the one year warranty period (shouldn't be two years in Europe?).
I don't remember if it was on sleep or power off but that day three bands appeared in the middle of the screen:
One is more or less 1cm , colored and flickering, next an half cm white one sometimes flickering with a green tone and, last, another 1 cm colored and flickering.
I called apple explaining my problem they said they cannot do anything as my warranty period was expired and they gave a contact for an authorized apple service in my area.
I went there, they asked me 50€ (living in France…) only to take in charge my mac plus, in case, additional costs.
I accepted,   after one week it was repaired at no additional fees (as they were an authorized apple service I get three additional months of warranty).
I’ve asked them what was (apparently a software problem…) the problem and how they solved they answered me something like “it’s a secret”.
Mac was working, fee was acceptable , I didn’t care about the answer and I went home.
After 5/6 months problems – as usual… just after the warranty period - come out once again. I don’t remember what it did, for sure the usual PRAM reset, SMC etc. and I solved the issue by myself without paying other 50€ for “the secret”. At least I thought the problem was solved…
Past week, after one year of good behave problems appeared again restarting from sleeping… this time no way to solve the issue.
I ran all the usual tests, reset everything, reinstalled from a previous time machine , also found ASD and used it (hope no one blame me for this… as you can understand I’m little bit upset) running it several time from OS and EFI. No problem found.
External monitor through HDMI works perfectly, print screen doesn’t show the stripes… shouldn’t be an nvidia issue.
I got an appointment next week with “genius” and if they are going to run ASD they won’t find anything wrong and, reading other messages here in the board, solution will be “replace LCD or  Logic Board. 600€ to the counter please.”
3000€ (when I bought it I went for I7 core… and additional ram) for a pc giving me headache after one year … is not the quality I was in habit with Apple.
Let’s see… but, before to go there do you have any suggestion on additional check I could perform? I know there was a known problem with nvidia but mid 2010 has GT330m that is not the same model apple confirms having problem (and by the way, I had no freeze. OS starts without any problems)
Additional info, mac never moves from my flat desk. I’m a kind of maniac… never had a shock, no hot temperature…
Any suggestion (even “take a long breathe and calm down” ) is more than welcome.
    Thanks in advance

Now i got an error from ASD. TM0P  Battery Charger Proximity Temperature...

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • I just ran a software update for Java and MacBook Pro SMC, now my Mini Display Port to HDMI TV is not working. The TV is flickering. The Mac Display is fine.

I was just watching / streaming TV off Safari on my actual TV.
I'm using a Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable for the connection to the external display.
Software update popped-up and said there was an update for Java and for SMC.
I ran the update and upon the computer restarting, my external display (my TV) is no longer working. It is now flickering.
It won't work in Mirroring or set up as an extended display.
I've reset SMC / PRAM / Safe Mode / Even restored from a Time Machine backup (From before the updates were done).
    What could it be?!

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.
