Macbook Pro for PhotoShop CS5.. help configuring.
Hi, I am purchasing a 15" Macbook Pro for my first year of University and would like some advice configuring it (without going overboard price-wise.) The catch is I would also like to use Photoshop CS5 on it, and have it run good and fast. My current desktop is slow as mollases and would like to kill two birds with one stone and get a good laptop for school and Photo applications.
So, here's my options.
1)2.53 GHz i5, 8GB ram, 500GB HD 7200 rpm, NVIDIA 256mb graphics card. (so basically "lesser processor and graphics card, but better RAM)
2)2.66 GHz i7, 4GB ram, 50GB HD 7200 rpm, NVIDIA 512mb graphics card. (Higher end processor and graphics card, but less RAM).
So as you can see, it is Processor/graphics VS ram. I know option 1 is still a little more $, but I'm not that concerned. Just want to get a machine that will run Photoshop CS5 smoothly and fast (maybe some video editing in the future, but not huge deal on video). As you can probably tell, I'm new to high end laptops like this, just want to get it right the first time.
Also, dont be afraid to tell me if I will truly benefit LOADS MORE from the i7, nvidia 512gb graphics, and 8GB ram. I would like to not spend this much if possible, but I would like to know if it is also worth considering anyway.

As far as I know there's about 7% difference between an i5 and an i7 processor, not a huge amount.
RAM and a fast drive are going to impact that type of work more and so I'd say put the bigger RAM first on your list (so if a choice of (1) or (2) I'm saying (1))

I’m ready to upgrade my 7-year-old PowerBook G4 (which has served me so very well) to something more current. Logic Pro will be a primary use of the new Mac. With my understanding of ports and busses and the requirements of a DAW, I’m wondering about best configurations for a Mac DAW.
I generally record one, two or maybe three audio tracks at once, then add a bunch of software instruments (drums/percussion, strings, horns, pads, etc.) to craft a song. It would be nice, though, to have the possibility of recording a live drum kit or even a live band (so up to 16 tracks at once).
Aside from CPU speed, number of cores, memory, etc., my understanding is that there are two critical pieces of technology required for a well performing DAW. First is an audio interface. Second is fast storage for reading/writing audio files.
My preference is to upgrade to another Mac laptop and I’m thinking about the latest i7 MacBook Pro, 15”. I don’t want the 17” because it’s too big and heavy and I’ll be using an external monitor most of the time. (Still would like the portability of a laptop, so would rather not go with an iMac or Mac Pro.)
My concern is that the 15” MBP does not have the ExpressCard/34 slot. Without this slot there’s only one USB buss and one Firewire buss to connect a hard drive and audio interface. So either of these devices would be limited by the maximum speed of USB 2. If the 15” had an ExpressCard/34 slot, I would put a Firewire audio interface on the FW port, then buy either a FW 800 or USB 3 ExpressCard and attach an external drive to it.
So my first question is: given only FW 800 and USB 2, what would be the capabilities of audio recording on a latest i7 MBP? Would you attach an audio interface to FW 800 and an external drive to USB 2, or the other way around? Most FW audio interfaces I’ve seen support only FW 400, so would it make more sense to attach an audio interface to USB 2 and a FW 800 drive to FW 800?
Whichever the best option, does anyone have a rough sense for how many audio tracks could be recorded and played back with an optimally configured i7 MBP?
Another question: Is it possible to remove the DVD drive of a MBP and replace it with a hard drive? If so, would the buss be capable of FW 800 speeds? (I’m assuming the DVD drive connection to the MBP is an independent buss not to be affected by other devices.) I guess a FW 800 controller of some sort would be necessary? If this is an option, then one could have two independent busses for storage access and audio interface, both functioning at FW 800 speeds?
Last question: Would using a SSD as either the internal drive or an external be particularly helpful in this situation?
I hope this all makes sense. I’ve used a Yamaha AW4416 for recording for years and I’m a little queasy about switching to a DAW because of potential latency and performance issues. One option would be to sync my AW4416 to Logic Pro, use the AW4416 for recording tracks, then transfer the audio files to the Mac for mixing with Logic Pro.

I would go: FW800 -> FW800 Drive -> FW400 Audio interface.

It all depends on what a track is. There is a different between one 16/44 audio track on it's own, a 24/96 audio track loaded with plugins, and a heavy software instrument track with high polyphony and loads of plugins.
In terms of raw tracks, you can get way more than you will practically need. Yes, they shouldn't have dropped eSata (I'm keeping my older MBP for this reason - I can connect eSata drives or my UAD2 depending on my needs)

Yes, but it may void your warranty, depending on how you do it.

Internal drives are SATA, much faster than FW800 in general. Throughput mostly depends on drive speed and performance, more than any bus speed limitations.

Not sure on that. Optical media are very slow devices anyway...

To be honest, unless you are planning massive projects, you'll be fine with an external FW800 drive. If you are planning on doing large projects that one FW800 can't cope with, then you shouldn't be looking at a laptop, you should be looking at a Mac Pro.
I think you're probably worrying too much - a well specced MBP sensibly configured is a very capable machine.

I'm still dubious to how SSD's will hold up in the long run - they haven't been around very long, and I'm concerned about the limited lifespans (maximum number of writes etc). I wouldn't go there personally, not yet.

Can I use my old g5 tower as a scratch disk for my Macbook Pro for Photoshop?
I just made the laptop jump away from towers and am a little shocked by how much difference a smaller scratch disk makes. Can I use my old tower as a scratch disk to help out my new Macbook Pro?
Any other tweaks I can do to speed up large files in Photoshop? Should I bump up the ram usage by Photoshop above the recommened percentage?Hm. I was just going to plug in a firewire cable to both and hoped that magically scratch disk would appear as an option for my tower.

How can I get updates for Photoshop CS5 to download to my new Mac book pro where CS5 is already installed from my original disk? I have tried many times over 2 days. I get the same error messages re downloading error. I successfully downloaded the current version of Adobe DNG Converter & it installed perfectly. Help please!
The Adobe auto updater is highly unreliable.
You need to look for and download the update yourself and then manually apply it as per the detailed instructions on the download page:

I have a PC running Windows XP (yes an antique) with CS3 Photoshop and InDesign and lightroom 2 (yes all antiques). I have acquired a PC running Windows 7 with no programs. I also have a MacBook pro with full CS5 suite. The programs were already loaded with I got it as a gift. Question 1. If I find serial numbers used to download programs to the old PC, can those CS3 programs be put on the newer PC. Question 2. I really want to put CS5 suite on PC machines. Is that possible? Especially since my MacBook is showing some hard drive problems.
You should be able to get the CS3 programs installed and running on the new pc since CS3 is spec-ed for Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Downloading the programs does not require a serial number. You can find them here: Download CS3 products but you will need the serial number to activate the programs. You might be able to find that thru your Adobe account online.
You will not be able to install the CS5 Mac version on a PC and you won't be able to trade it to a PC version either due to it being an older version. Trades are allowed only for the latest version (CS6) -

Paragon CampTune
Paragon CampTune is a commercial product that is designed expressly for this task. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ It consists of a downloadable ISO that needs to be burned to a disc and booted from in order to resize the partitions costs US$19.95.
Securing Dual-System Configuration
Imaging is still the most affordable and robust way to secure computer data. Unfortunately Mac OS X backs up only HFS+ volumes, leaving Windows with dual-system configurations unsecured. You can permanently lose all of your data unless you have a Windows-compatible backup solution.
Paragon’s CampTune and Paragon’s Drive Copy for Mac can secure the entire dual-system configuration. CampTune creates traditional images of volumes or entire hard disks, Drive Copy can copy them to other disks. In case of an emergency, you can restore the previously created image or copy all your data back to its original state.
GParted Live
GParted Live is similar to CampTune as it is also distributed as a bootable image that needs to be copied to a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. As free and open source software, distributed under the GPL, it will always be available free. Since it has more functions than CampTune, it may be harder for folks who are not as experienced with partitioning hard drives. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
iPartition
Coriolis Systems' iPartition is a £29.95 ($44.95 US) utility that runs in Mac OS X and allows resizing of all of the relevant partition formats, including HFS+, FAT32, and NTFS. It provides a Mac-oriented user interface that may be easier to manage than some of the free utilities. As it is not capable of resizing the boot disk, it requires a bootable external disk or a boot DVD. (A tool to create a boot DVD is included.)
Paragon Partition Manager
From the makes of CampTune is a commercial tool that is similar in functionality to GParted Live, but has a more polished/friendly user interface than GParted Live. Winclone/Disk Utility
Winclone is a free tool for creating and restoring backup images of your Windows partition. One of its key features is that it can restore to a larger partition than the one the image was created from.
NOTE: Winclone has been discontinued, but for now remains available and capable of completing these tasks (including creating and restoring Windows 7 images).

Disk Utility can resize HFS+ (Mac OS) partitions, but is currently incapable of resizing NTFS partitions, so you could use it to reduce the size of the HFS+ partition and create a new larger placeholder MS-DOS (FAT) partition
The full process would be:
Backup Windows partition with Winclone.
(if the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one make sure you set the preferences in Winclone to save the image as an uncompressed dmg)
Delete old Windows partition
Resize current Mac Partition
Create new Windows partition as MS-DOS (FAT) in free space after Mac OS partition.
(If the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one an additional step is required: shrink the filesystem on the image by selecting Tools->Shrink Windows (NTFS) Filesystem)
Reboot your computer for the new Windows partition to mount properly (winclone may not restore if you don't reboot)
Restore Winclone partition over new Windows partition

Native OS utilities
MR user Kazyua reports that you can use the disk management utilities provided with the current operating systems if you want to do it manually. Windows 7 and OS X both have partition resizing functions built in. In OS X, open Disk Utility and manually shrink the mac HFS+ partition by dragging the lower right corner. Then in windows go to the start menu and type "disk management" into the search box then hit enter. You should get an overview of the drives you have and the individual partitions. Right-clicking on the partition gives an "Extend Volume" option. The Windows NTFS volume should then be extended into the free space you created with Disk Utility. This method has not worked for other users, so try at your own risk.

I'm having issues loading Youtube on my MacBook Pro for about a week now. I'm not sure if this is because of my computer or internet but my sister's PC loads Youtube completely fine. Can someone help me figure this out?
Hi, I had been having the same problem for over a week, but both my window's HP and my 2011 macbook pro barely could load youtube. What kind of router you have? I was using a belkin play router that was only 8 months old, switched to a new AirPort Extreme Base Station and now everything works perfect.

My provider is Hughsnet. Is something not set right?? I can conect but after open a couple of windows/tabs it degrades my

ThanksUse the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps. -
so I've downloaded a tv series from iTunes onto my macbook pro, for some reason the episodes on my iTunes won't play at all. no sound and no images. any suggestions and help?
Hi,
As you have match, I suggest that you create a new library by holding ctrl whist launching iTunes. Select create new library. Sign into iTunes Store and activate match. You will now have access to your music and will be able to stream your music.
Options : get a new external drive formatted for mac and either download music from match or copy music from old drive to new one. Alternatively you could reformat old drive and download music from match - I would not be comfortable using this option as it means erasing drive before being able to use with mac.

This has been going on for a while now after the hard drive was originally replaced back in the summer. Tried fixing it myself, however no luck and it keeps coming back. Anyone have any other ideas?
