Macbook pro freezes on start up with blue screen

its less than a month old and this is the first time i have seen a blue screen or freeze on the startup.

Might be time for some basic repairs. Many users run them once a month.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
If that doesn't do it, post back.

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • Macbook Pro freezes and comes up with stripey screen and kernel report?

    Hi there,
I've had a couple of issues with my Macbook Pro Version 10.6.8 which I bought in 2011. I had an issue with it about six months after I first bought it when I accidentally dropped my mac, and the screen occasionally came up with blue and pink lines. I took it into the Apple store and they were kind enough to fix the issue. It's been fine since then.
Yesterday my airport froze up out of the blue and wouldn't do anything when I tried to turn it back on. So I googled what to do and found that I should do a Parameter RAM reset, which I did and it started working again.
About five hours later, my mac screen froze up, went blue for about a minute and then came back covered in glitchey stripes, I couldn't see what I was doing, I'm pretty sure a glitchey kernel report came up and I restarted the computer as I couldn't really do much else. It was still a little glitchy when I turned it back on, so I restarted again and it was fine, although leaving me a little worried.
It did it again earlier today, about an hour after I turned it on - this time the screen went completely white and wouldn't come out of it. And it happened once again this evening while I was on skype. This time I took a picture of the resulting images below. I'm assuming it's a RAM problem, or after a bit of googling, possibly a logic board problem? If anyone might have an idea what could be happening, it would be super helpful.
I took a look at the Console Messages to see whatmight be going on and a message saying the the 'Database Disc Image is Malformed' keeps occuring. Not entirely sure what that means. Anywho, if anyone can suggest what might be happening, or a short term fix to stop it from happening, that would be ace as I have a lot of work on at the moment and can't really stand to lose the stuff (going to be backing up everything tomorrow, I'm just away from the hard drive).
I have a little while to wait as I've booked an appointment at the genius bar which is next Friday. My mac is still under Applecare too, does anyone know if this is the sort of problem they'll be able to fix easily? Thanks for any help anyone can provide in advance!

    Hi there!
After posting the images on Facebook a bunch of friends who had had the same problem said it was my logic board/graphic card and they were right. When I took it to Apple they identified the issue and replaced the board. I also had some glitches in my OS so that's been re-installed and updated.
Applecare took care of it, but I was told it would be between £500 - £700 ($800 - $1300) to replace if I wasn't covered.
    Hope that helps!

  • Macbook Pro won't start up past blue screen

I'm running OS X 10.5.7 on my MBP, along with a boot camp partition. My superdrive has been playing up for the past few months, and upon learning that the 2.1 firmware update could be responsible, I obtained the update and attempted to re-flash the firmware myself. To do this I had to edit a system file and spoof my version number to 10.4.9; I couldn't flash the drive otherwise.
I used textwrangler to edit the file /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist - I had to unlock the file to do this. I saved it, used the flashing utility and rebooted as instructed, and then encountered the issue. The screen turns from grey to blue, and the "loading" indicator appears briefly before disappearing again - this happens repeatedly until I power my computer off.
I started up in single-user mode and performed a fsck - this repaired some filesystem issues I wasn't aware I had, but did nothing to fix the problem. Running in single user mode, however, did reveal that the loginwindow.app was crashing repeatedly, and crash reports were being saved in a log directory.
Attempting to start in safe mode results in it sitting on the loading indicator at the grey Apple logo screen for upwards of twenty minutes with no results (save my computer getting increasingly warm).
I've long since mislaid the discs bundled with my MBP as well as my Leopard disc.
Windows XP still boots with no problems.
What exactly is the cause of this issue? I wouldn't have thought the file I edited and not being able to get past this blue screen were connected. Is there any way I can restore it?
I also have a Macbook at my disposal - are there any feasible solutions which would involve booting another machine in target disk mode?

Did you make a backup of the file? Always a wise thing to do when messing with system files.
Not sure if pico works in SUM but it would be worth a try to edit the file again to revert it to its proper version. If that fails, you will need to get your Leopard disc for an Archive and Install. Might be able to get a replacement one from Applecare at little cost.
Good luck and let us know what happens.
    Edit:
Just saw you have another Macbook available. If both machines were running same OS you might be able to copy the file from one computer to the other. I would do this as root though then run a Permissions Repair in Disk Utility afterward

  • 2010 MacBook Pro freezes up during use with black screen

I have an i7 Mid 2010 MBP with 8GB of RAM, SSD and 10.6.8.  It has been freezing up on me with a black screen and looping audio, and I have to hold down the power button to reset it.  It seems to freeze most when I have either Firefox or Parallels open.  Does anybody have any idea what would be causing this?  If I were to post the Error Report here, is there any information in it I should delete first so that I don't accidentally show everybody my personal information?  Thanks.

Satchow, I have the same problem!!!
It's hard to believe that I spent 4.500 dollars in a notebook from a company with such fame and with this huge fail.
What are they going to do about it? Gave us a new one? Its not our problem.
Apple Inc. have to make a recall!!! What do you think about it, my friends?
    Regards,
    Rodrigo TP

  • MacBook pro freezes at start up

My MacBook pro freezes at start up at the gray screen w/ spinning gear.

You need to back up your data before you do anything else, if it's still possible.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • MacBook Pro freezes during start up and safe boot

MacBook Pro freezes during start up and will not start in safe boot in recovery, it goes back to apple screen with spinning gear

    Stinkster,
does your MacBook Pro have a removable battery? If so, then it originally came with grey installation DVDs. If it doesn’t have a removable battery, look on the bottom of your MacBook Pro for its serial number (it’s etched there in tiny print). If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three of them; if it has twelve, write down the last four. Include the three or four characters in your reply; they can determine which model MacBook Pro you have, and the model will determine whether it originally came with grey installation DVDs or not.
If your MacBook Pro did originally come with grey installation DVDs, then you’re going to need to find them (or buy a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit) to reïnstall Mac OS X on your current hard drive, or to install it on a replacement hard drive.

  • I have a MacBook Pro and it starts up but the screen will not come on - any suggestions?

I have a MacBook Pro and it starts up but the screen will not come on - any suggestions?

The simplest operation your Mac can do is start up with the Option key held down. The code is all in ROM. It uses a One size fits all resolution to light up the display and draw an icon for each potentially bootable Volume.
The most effective thing your Mac can do when confused is to start up using the Shift key. It does one pass of Disk Utility "Repair Disk" then boots up with minimal extensions loaded and ask you to login. But if your Mac is really sick, it may never get there.

  • My MacBook pro freezes during start up after 30 secs. Any ideas?

My MacBook pro freezes during startup while the logo is still showing and the moving circle stops after about 30 seconds. Any ideas please?

On my Mac that DSMOS message appears about 20 seconds into the boot process.  Booting finishes about 30 seconds after that.
Do those letters "v" really appear on the screen?
Unfortunately, if those are the last messages on the screen, I see nothing there that explains the hang.  The next message I see after the DSMOS message is one about an AirPort daemon, although I'm not sure I understand any connection there might be between that and your hang.
Since you don't have a system restore disc you won't be able to do the next thing I was going to suggest, which is to run the diagnostics that came with that Mac.  If you have an OS X 10.6 installation disc, you could try reinstalling OS X over the top of what's on it now.  Right after that finishes use Software Update to apply any missing OS X updates, or download and install the "combo" updater for the version of OS X 10.6 that you want.  If that Mac has a software problem doing that might help.

  • Attn: macbook pro won't start up past grey screen NO MATTER WHAT

my macbook pro won't start up past the grey screen, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. i've searched all the discussions on this, and NOTHING WORKS. nothing caused this either - i was just browing the internet and using ichat, and my computer shut down, and that is when this started.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this bullstein. My computer works great, etc., and I support mac and apple to the nth degree, but then some stupid crap like this happens and I can't use my computer at all. I have to use my sister's **** ibook g3 to even do this.
PLEASE HELP. do NOT post what you have already posted in the other discussions, and i've already been welcomed to the boards. I can't go to an apple store because i'm on vacation in new mexico for the summer, and there no stores anywhere near here. is there any real advice around here? I need to use my computer. That is why I spent close to $4,000 for it with upgrades and software.

where can i get an install disc for the macbook pro?
You really need to use the one that came with your MBP. If you don't have it, a retail Tiger OS X disc should work.
also, could an archive/install potentially free up some harddrive space on my computer?
No, it will actually use more space, so you will need at least 6G of free space. To clean your hard drive, use WhatSize.

  • Macbook pro freezing and start up problems

Hi, I have a 2011 model macbook pro that has recently started freezing without an apparent reason. When it freezes I can still move the mouse around but everything I click is unresponsive, and remains so untill I force it to reboot. In adition to this I have also been having problems when it boots up some times, in which it gets to the pale blue startup screen and then gets stuck there, and again it remains unresponsive untill I forc it to shut down and restart.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Macbook Pro freezes after "Starting automatic backup"

I'm having problems with my MacBook Pro often freezing when it cannot connect to TimeMachine (ie when I am out of the office).
Usually I get the following in the console logs:
    15/11/12 4:13:30.950 PM com.apple.backupd[10512]: Starting automatic backup
    15/11/12 4:13:31.000 PM kernel[0]: nspace-handler-set-snapshot-time: 1352956413
    15/11/12 4:13:32.612 PM com.apple.backupd[10512]: Backup failed with error: 19
which is fine, I don't expect it to backup without a TM present. However a couple of times a day I get:
    15/11/12 5:14:07.668 PM com.apple.backupd[11400]: Starting automatic backup
Then all apps lock up, I cannot "force quit" anything, start terminal or shutdown without holding the power button down. The next line in the console log is then:
    15/11/12 5:32:31.000 PM bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1352961151 0
Nothing between the "Starting automated backup" and the reboot. I've checked the rest of the logs and found nothing suspicious in there.
Any ideas where to start looking for a solution to this? My first guess would be the snapshot is failing but I'm not sure how I can test this.
    Robyn

I also have problems, and freezes. But I know where it comes from.
Since 10.6.3, temperature is far higher than on 10.6.2. And that's not due to CPU charge (ActivityMonitor). But iStatpro shows that the GPU is hot too (even idle) !
So I suppose that a background task is charging the GPU (OpenCL related ?).
I use SMCFanControl to speed up fans, but that's just a temporary fix. If Apple does not fix this quickly, I will downgrade to 10.6.2.

  • Macbook Pro "freezes" on Start up and Beeps - HELP!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro (Christmas 2011), and today it was installing updates. It stated that it needed to restart to complete the updates, so I confirmed it. It shut down fine, but then didn't start up again on it's own. I waited for about an hour before manually starting the computer by pressing the power button. It did the opening chime and then the logo screen came up, but then it started a series of beeps (beep, beep, beep-------beep, beep, beep-------beep, beep, beep, etc.) along with accompying blinking bqattery light (it is fully charged). It froze on the logo screen and continued to beep for a half an hour before I forced it to shut down (control+command+power button). I tried restarting it in safe mode (holding the shift button down during startup), but it only resulted in the computer freezing on the logo screen for about five minutes before shutting itself off (no beeping or light that time, though). I went through my instruction manual as well as online searches to see if maybe I could somehow restore the computer to factory settings and I CAN get it to get into the Disk Utility section (holding down the option button during startup), but I'm absolutely terrified of erasing something I shouldn't, or have it all be for naught.
So, what's my best bet here? Is there a way I can fix this, at home and safely, or should I get my warrantee out and take it back to the store (Best Buy) and let them try to fix it?
    Desperate for help,
    Vanessa

It is better to take the MBP back to the store. They may be able to help you.
    Best.
