Macbook pro freezes randomly (spinning wheel of death)

I just got a macbook pro refresh and the thing randomly freezes without warning. Once it's locked up the wheel just spins, I can't access Activity Monitor, can't do anything. I think it's a pretty good computer but, aside from freezing and basically totally breaking randomly. What's up with this? Do the people at Mac not test equipment before selling it to their users. If you google "mac freezes" you get tons of hits, but none of them seem to have the solution. Any help? Thanks!

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel

    Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
    Thanks for reading!

Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. So I will put them here for you to look at if you don't mind:

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro stuck at spinning wheel of death after a Thunderbolt issue, HD erasing and fresh Lion install from Recovery HD. Please help me!!!

So, I think the title says it all, but to give you a little more info:
I connected my late 2011 MacBook Pro to my TV using a Thunderbolt HDMI adapter, and closed the lid. When I opened it, it wouldn't show the login screen, so I restarted using power button. Got stuck at the Apple logo with the spinning wheel. So I booted the Recovery HD and found out it was a HD problem, so I (reluctantly) erased the HD and installed Lion from scratch. When it rebooted (after DOWNLOADING the Lion components) I got some terminal commands (sorry for not being more specific, still a noob when it comes to Mac) and then the screen faded and a message appeared saying I needed to reboot the computer. So I did. 3 effing times. Then I got stuck AGAIN at the spinning wheel, and I'm currently with that on my screen. I'm trying the forums before calling Apple (my computer's still within the 90 days of warranty) because it's not yet 9 A.M. where I live

can you go back to recovery mode then open disk utility.
in disk utility, higlight the disk, the one saying the brand and size then click on repair disk under first aid tab
if it repairs fine, that's okay
if repair was not successful, go to partition and change current to 1 partition then apply
    install lion again
    hope this helps

So, my Macbook Air has suddenly started to freeze and leave me with the dreaded spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I get 10mins into a session, and sometimes the freezing will occur as soon as I log in. I have tried to log in in safe mode, but I also get the SWOD here as well! My details are as follows:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

  • Mac Book Pro constantly displays spinning wheel of death HELP!!!

My Mac Book Pro (after installing Mavericks) displays the spinning wheel of death multiple times per day. I thought it was my Google Chrome, but now it has been happening no matter what application I am using. I used Etrecheck to see what is going on with my computer, but I don't actually know what the output means. I've copied the information below.
More information: I no longer have a Blackberry, but I don't know how to remove any software that may still be on my computer (since I see Blackberry listed under Kernel Extensions). I also backed up my harddrive on the 28th, just to be safe.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this. I'm in the process of trying to study for mulitple teacher certification exams, so this is the worst possible time for tmy computer to suddenly go haywire. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help!

    kmiddlet88,
yes, it could be due to nearly anything listed in your kernel extensions, startup items, launch daemons, launch agents, or user items above. Please check all of your installed third-party software to make sure that the versions which are installed on your MacBook Pro are compatible with Mavericks; uninstall every software package which isn’t Mavericks-compatible. After you’ve done that, boot into Safe mode, and see if you still get the beach ball of doom there. If it doesn’t appear there, restart normally and see if it appears then.

  • MacBook Pro slow with spinning wheel

My MacBook Pro recently on startup gave me a screen which led me to repair my HD or re-install from Disc or I-cloud backup.
As I have no backup disc, I did the HD repair but now the computer is working very slowly and more often than not, gives me
the DEADLY spinning wheel for practically every mouse click. HELP ! HELP ! HELP !

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Macbook pro problem with spinning wheel

hello....i have a macbook pro 15" i7 and i have a problem with the spinning wheel of Mac os X. I am always seeing this spinning wheel. for example I open mail and safari at the same time and i get this spining wheel for 25 secondes...
    any solutions????
    please help me...

i open mail and then the activity and i saw that it was sending me password to find any new mails
Did it find any new mails? Or did it just sit there asking for a password?
then how can i see that my home page is set to one that fully loads accurately in my browser???
Find a website you like to visit that doesn't have problems loading. Google and Wikipedia and Apple's own website all should always work.
Go to Safari menu -> Preferences -> Click on the light switch for General.
There you will find a home page field where you can put that website you like.

  • Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro freezes randomly

Since I upgraded my MacBook Pro (shipped last October) to Lion, it randomly freezes.
It lasts roughly 4-5 minutes where I cannot do anything. The only running apps are Google Chrome, Skype and Twitter. All are a their latest version.
Anyone having the same issue ? Any hint ?

    Try these
    Reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    PRAM/NVRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Hardware Test
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then backup your files to a external drive and disconnect.
Reboot holding command + r keys and enter the Recovery Partition and see if you can reinstall 10.7 over the installed version.
You might have some third party program incompatibility issue if this doesn't resolve it.

  • Macbook Pro freezes randomly, but can trigger it also

I have a Macbook Pro that I use for work. Randomly it will freeze on me and will be unresponsive. Any device, like external disks or my iPhone will disconnect immediately when this happens. I have run the Apple Hardware Test dvd that came with it. It does have RAM installed by my IT but the full hardware test did not show any issues.
Although it is typically random. It appears to happen more frequently while I am on battery.
I can trigger it almost immediately if I am on battery power, I launch iTunes and I play any movie. It will freeze within minutes. Playing the movie, minimized, full screen, etc always results in the Mac freezing.
Very infrequently along with the freezing the Mac will emit from it's speakers a harsh noise. It is coming from the audio system, as it will play through my headphones when I have them plugged in. This probably the most jarring, as when I am commuting on the train and it does this, it frightens the other passengers.
Every time it crashes I have to hold the power down to shut the computer off.
Again, this is my work computer and I need it to do my job. There are no replacements at my work.
What options are available to me? Ideally I would like to get Apple to replace it. But it is defiantly past the 30 day return policy.
    Thank you for your help!
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP51.0074.B01
    SMC Version: 1.33f8
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled

Your MBP should never freeze. Freezing can have several causes, and it's possible to do some troubleshooting here, but it may be best to just take it in to Apple or call. You ran the AHT, but there are other things to try.
Try the original Apple RAM. The AHT does not always find RAM issues. If no freezing with the original RAM, there may be a problem with the new RAM. (If you go to the Apple Store, put back the original RAM. If you don't they may blame everything on the new RAM and not look further.) Also check in the System Profiler to be sure all of your RAM is recognized.
    Reset the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
    Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
    Try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
Back up all of your data, and reinstall the OS, preferably using an Archive and Install:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US
These are things they would likely have you try anyway, so you may as well go ahead and try them to see if anything helps. Very likely they won't seriously look for hardware issues until you have eliminated software issues.
You are still under warranty, so they will fix whatever is wrong.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro Contacts iCloud & spinning wheel

Against the iCloud Contacts there exists, permanently, a spinning wheel. My guess it has something to do with synchronising? Why also will the merge facility not work? It identifies a number of contacts needing to merge but then fails to do so.  Surely there is a solution. Thank you for reading this and for any offers of help.

  • Macbook pro running slow - spinning wheel but still space avail?

Is there anything that I can do to speed up my macbook pro?
System is up to date, and there is space available. I've checked CPU - I think there is probably a lot of double ups on information stored on computer but not sure how to do a clean-up without loosing originals....
Any help would be greatly appreciated? In laymans terms if possible, as clearly I'm not as technically knowledgable in this area (also don't have much &'s to spend on clean-up software - so cheaper options or ability to fix thru what is already available to me is best!)
    Thanks in advance

I like to follow this one.
No information will be lost and i've had good luck with it in the past.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Macbook Pro Running Slow: Spinning Ball of Death

    Hello, all
I decided to go ahead and make an account here because I have looked in various different threads for a solution to my problem, tried various different things, and nothing works so far.
Basically, my MBP is running super slow as of the past few days. Every few seconds, the spinning ball of death appears, all typing stops, reappears again a few seconds later, and my browser feels like I'm running on a dial-up connection. Any application feels like that, really, on- or offline.
I've done a reset of my SMC. I've run Disk Utility and repaired the disk. I've run OnyX. I've tried looking for abnormal tasks taking up a lot of computer usage in the Task Manager.
Is there anything else I should be trying to do? I'm really running out of options and am quite frustrated with this whole situation, about to throw my laptop out the window.
I updated recently to OS X Mavericks, but that was after the problem had started. The problem persists in 10.8 and 10.9.

Is this a Standard MBP, one with the built in Optical (DVD) drive, or a Retina model?
You could try reinstalling a fresh (NEW) copy of OS X on an external drive and run the system from that external to test. If the system runs smooth, although slower than from the internal drive, with no beachballs then you have some type of problem with the internal drive. What that problem is could be the drive is failing or it is to filled up with files or the cable going from the drive to the logic board is failing.

  • MacBook Pro freezes randomly and stops audio then continues in a few seconds sometimes minutes.

My Mac has been acting up for the past 2 days. It freezes at random times and cuts off audio as well. I've repaired disk permissions and that kind of seem to help a bit in term of how often the problem happens. Still freezes at random times. I know Chrome is notorious for causing problems with Macs. If anyone has any help as to what I may do to fix this, I'd appreciate the help. And if I should just remove chrome all once and for all.

Do you have a lot of applications open?  Try quitting applications that you are not actively using. Run without Chrome for a bit to see if the problem is directly tied to Chrome.
