Macbook Pro freezes when I plug in USB

I've not changed anything about my Macbook Pro (13" early 2011) except upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and now when I plug in my USB hub (which only has my keyboard, mouse and printer connected to it) the computer freezes completely and I have to press and hold the power button to restart it. If it doesn't do that, then it just doesn't recognise that the USB has been plugged in at all.
Is this an issue with the USB port or something else? I still have AppleCare so will take it to an Apple Store if I can't find out how to solve this problem myself. Anyone had this issue and found a solution?
Thanks.

Did you also try this when booted to the Recovery HD volume? If not then give this a try. In addition, while troubleshooting unplug all USB devices (includeing the keyboard) and try with another device such as only the mouse, which should allow you to move the cursor on screen. What you've done so far is only half of the picture, and doing this with the mouse both in normal boot and when booted to the Recovery HD partition would help determine what the problem is.
It is sounding like the issue is not with the printer and instead is with your computer, so hopefully its just a software configuration snafu, but it could be a problem with hardware.
If you find the mouse will not properly work in any port when booted to the Recovery HD partition, then run the Apple Hardware Test suite (see here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57352461-263/how-to-invoke-and-interpret-th e-apple-hardware-tests/, but do not run the "extended" test) and see if they bring up any problems. If so then write them down and post what they are here.

  • Macbook Pro Freezes When USB Plugged In

    Just like the title says, my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13 running 10.8.2 freezes for an averge of 15 seconds whenever I plug anything into the USB ports. It varies depending on what is plugged in. Phones, both iPhone and Android make it freeze for about 15 seconds, USB drives are usually just a couple seconds. I dont even know where to begin when trouble shooting this. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Hi guys,
    I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro. When I plug in any usb device I get a short freeze of the pc for about 5 seconds. During my tests, I noticed that the freezing starts from the first time that i move the touchpad. It means that if I plug the usb device and I move the touchpad after 30 seconds, I get the freazing from that time for 5 seconds. if I continue to move the touchpad while I plug in the usb I don't get any freeze. Moreover, I noticed that if in the meantime that I plug in the usb I move the touchpad without any interruption, I don't get any freezing.
    I don't know if the problem could be related to the touchpad or not... Help!!!

  • Zen Micro Freezes when I plug in USB cable+USB not recognized at ti

    Ok, I know you, the reader, has heard this complaint posted over and over on the Creative forums, and you would probably tell me to SEARCH THE FORUMS. Well, I did, and I found no answer or solution to my problems. So..here goes nothing.
    I recently purchased a Black 5gb Creative Zen Micro, I was really content and happy with it...that is until I plugged it into my USB 2.0 Card. The moment I do that (I've tried plugging it in into every USB 2.0 slot, and NO, this isn't a hub, but a PCI card), The Zen Micro freezes! I have to resolve this by removing the cover and taking out the battery, then reinserting the battery. At the same time my Zen Micro freezes, a little bubble pops up on my computer screen saying "USB Device Not Recognized". I'm going absolutely out of my mind here, and am on the verge of returning the Zen Micro, and might get a replacement, and if that doesn't work, just returning the Zen altogether for a refund and getting a Rio Carbon. I really like the Zen, so PLEASE PLEASE help me out here!
    Things I've Tried That Did Not Work:
    -Uninstall/Reinstalling Zen Explorer, Mediasource (basically everything on CD)
    -Updating the drivers for Zen Micro found on Nomadness.net
    -Updating Firmware for Zen Micro
    -Going into rescue mode and cleaning up, Formatting, reloading firmware, and rebooting.
    -Trying the USB 2.0 Card in different PCI Slots
    -Rotating the order in which I connect the USB cable to Zen Micro and PC
    -Uninstalling/Reinstalling the drivers, even when the Zen Micro pops up as "Unknown Device"
    -Reading tips/hints on Nomadness.net
    I have scoured the forums, and have not found anything useful or new. I know its not the USB 2.0 Card's problem, since I plugged in my USB mouse into all the ports on the USB Card, and it worked fine.
    Note: When I plug the USB cable that came with the Zen Micro into the integrated USB slots on the motherboard (USB .), it at times, does work, but even then, not a high chance of it happening. Even if I do successfully connect the Zen to a USB . slot without it freezing up, the Zen ends up not being detected by any program, like Window Media Player, Mediasource, or Creative Zen Micro Explorer.
    I am going out this weekend and am gonna try to buy a new USB Cable, and if that doesn't work, returning the cable, and returning the Zen Micro to be replaced. AND IF THAT DOES NOT WORK...GOODBYE CREATIVE! HELLO RIO! But please, any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. I will also try to contact Creative Customer Support, but I doubt they'll tell me anything new, if I could even connect to them without being put on hold.
    System Specs:
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    Creative Zen Micro Firmware .02.05
    USB 2.0

    Yep, that's exactly my issues to.....no matter what I've done, including replacing the USB 2.0 card which WAS and Adaptec DuoConnect 2.0 card which works fine with every other USB device ever connected to it, the Zen Micro 6g is NOT recognized by Creative Media Source or WMP. It is only recognized by the PC in Device Manager, and it has a yellow marker on it, which tells me the drivers are not installed. I know I don't need the drivers installed, but even after installing them, it tells me the drivers are not installed.
    However, the answer is: it's definitely not the Micro, since it works flawlessly on my other PC and on my Toshiba notebook. So, it's some compatibility issue on that one PC. Since I refuse to let things be, I am reformatting that PC, reinstalling from scratch with WinXP and sp2. This PC has WinXP Pro but it has other issues so a reformat is in order anyway. Hopefully, this will resolve the issues. If not, then I say it's incompatibility with the Intel 865Perl m.b. But I'm at a loss as to why it won't work when plugged into the Adaptec card too.

  • MacBook Pro Freezes When Viewing Any Video with new iTunes

    I, too, am having problems with the latest iTunes update. My MacBook Pro freezes completely. Total lock-up. This happens when trying to view any video, including video podcasts. I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to get my laptop to turn off. Any other MBP users experiencing this?

    Hi there, I have the same problem as you guys, everything was fine before iTunes 7.6 or iTunes 7.6.1 I tried both, before those updates I could watch any video in iTunes without any issue, after that when I play a video, a random video my Macbook freeze totally, sometimes comes alive but 90% of the cases I have to make a hard shutdown (press and hold the power button). I can't believe this kind of bugs in a software that is so mature. Help please!

  • Macbook Pro freezes when I unplug USB hub

    When I unplug my USB hub from my Macbook Pro it freezes up and I have to turn it off and back on. I did not have this problem before, it just starting happening recently. The only thing plugged into the hub at the moment is my keyboard which has the wireless reciever for my mouse plugged into it. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated as this makes it a hassle to take my Macbook anywhere.
    The USB hub is Gigaware brand, my keyboard is Apple, and my mouse is a Logitech MX Revolution, if that helps. I also have a LaCie 1tb external hard drive plugged in but that's using the firewire 800 slot so I wouldn't think that would affect it.

    I have a somewhat similar problem with my Macbook Pro and USB hub - it just started happening last week as well. I have a USB (external power) hub that hooks to an audio interface, piano keyboard, wireless keyboard and mouse. I normally have my laptop off when I hook up the hub because I've been traveling. Last week I plugged it in while the computer was on and the hub froze. I turned off the computer and unplugged everything. I turned everything back on and the hub worked...for a few minutes. Now anytime I run any type of audio or video from the computer (itunes, LogicPro, internet video) the hub freezes as soon as I press play. Then the program (like Itunes) freezes and I have to force quit. This makes me wonder if it is not the hub but something that the computer is using to run audio and video. None of my external equipment has caused problems for a year now - there is no new equipment - and just the standard Mac software updates.

  • Macbook Pro Freezes When Connected to iPod Classic!

    I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro that is acting a little funky. Whenever I plug in my iPod Classic to add music everything works perfectly fine until I eject the iPod. My computer then basically freezes up (gives the rainbow spinwheel of death) and it will not recover. The iPod icon doesn't disappear, it just turns light grey and everytime my only option is to force quit iTunes. The problem doesn't end there, my computer is completely bogged down and I have to force shut it down. It is incredibly annoying... The iPod works perfectly fine when I plug it into my fiancee's older Macbook Pro, it ejects fine and I've run disk utility on it using that computer and there are no problems with the iPod. My mid 2010 Macbook Pro runs other USB devices just fine (iPhone, iPad, Flash Drives etc.) it's just the iPod.
    Additionally, every since I upgraded to OS X 10.7 the computer will not shut down/restart. It just goes to a grey screen with a spinny wheel and won't fully shut down (I've left it over night to no success still grey screen). I have reinstalled OS X several times so I'm confused on this one as well. Any information on either of these issues would be greatly GREATLY appreciated.

    I should add that I can quit iTunes with the iPod connected. When I try to eject the iPod by manually dragging the icon to the trash the funkiness begins (icon doesn't disappear just turns light grey, and the computer freezes). I have found the computer behaves if I put it to sleep with the iPod connected (the iPod will eject properly) and when I wake the computer up, everything works w/o funkiness, however the greyed out iPod icon will still be on the desktop. This is the only way I've found to be able to manage this iPod when connected to this MBP.

  • My Macbook Pro crashes when I plug in m-audio fast track ultra

    Hey Friends
    I want to know if anyone of you who use a m-audio audio interface has the problem of your computer crashing, then having to restart, when you plug it into the usb drive. It started happening to me when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and is still doing it on Maverick. I've placed the error report below since I don't understand it, to see if someone could help me figure out why.
    Thanks

    Hi monicaxh1,
    Here is an article of troubleshooting for when your iPod does not appear in iTunes:

    The issues you are seeing may be connected, so I would try this troubleshooting first.

  • Macbook Pro freezes when disconnected from Internet

    I'm so frustrated, I was doing important work and now I'm about to pull my hair out, I need to finish what I was doing but I can't even turn on my computer without it freezing, I literally can't even move the mouse because it freezes right on loading screen every time I restart, here's the story.
    I disconnected the Internet for just a few seconds, then the computer froze. So naturally I restarted the computer, but each time I restart, it just freezes, I can't move the mouse, I can't click on anything, it's just frozen. Let me know how frustrating that is that you don't have computer access after working on important files.
    I have a 2008 non unibody Macbook pro with OS X mavericks, I knew the computer froze when I turned off wifi, but I correlated that with the app that I was running, since I wasn't running the app this time, I thought I could turn off wifi no problem.
    But like I said, now I can't even restart or use it at all. I can't even use safe mode because it freezes there too. I can do the cmd+shift+ctrl+r thing and I can connect to the Internet that way, but there's nothing I can do from there. Once I restart, the Internet connection is still disconnected in the main operating system.

    Okay I solved the problem. For anyone who runs across this issue in the future, here is the solution:
    Step 1) Turn on the computer and hold CMD + Option + S, this will boot the computer into single user mode
    Step 2) Type in "Mount -uw /"
    Step 3) Type in "vi /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist"
    Step 4) Scroll down until you find this part:
    <key>Interface</key>
    <dict>
            <key>en1</key>
            <dict>
                    <key>AirPort</key>
                    <dict>
                            <key>JoinModeFallback</key>
                            <array>
                                    <string>DoNothing</string>
                            </array>
                           <key>PowerEnabled</key>
                            <false/>
                            <key>RememberJoinedNetworks</key>
                            <true/>
                            <key>RequireAdminIBSS</key>
                            <false/>
                            <key>RequireAdminNetworkChange</key>
                            <false/>
                            <key>RequireAdminPowerToggle</key>
                            <false/>
                    </dict>
            </dict>
    </dict>
    Step 5: Edit the part where it says:
    <key>PowerEnabled</key>
    <false/>
    and change it to <true/>
    Step 6: Hit Ctrl + X, hit Y for Yes, press enter.
    Step 7: RESTART AND YOU HAVE YOUR COMPUTER BACK!!
    I panicked by the way because as someone said earlier, it's nearly impossible to fix:
    You cannot fix this problem with Safe Boot, Repair Permissions, Repair Disk, re-install Mavericks, restore from Time Machine backup, reset the SMC, reset PRAM, or boot into single-user mode.  Thus far, the only solution is to boot from a (homemade) Install OS X Mavericks USB, erase the hard drive, perform a clean Mavericks install, re-install your applications, and manually restore your data.
    Anyway I'm thankful for Ira Wolf 81 for figuring out, he deserves all the credit for this, I merely repeated his steps and found out he was right. Cheers.

  • Macbook Pro freezes when iphone connected

    I am running  OSX 10.8.5 on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro 15-inch. I have iphone 5 running 7.0.4. When I plug my iphone into my mac, my macbook freezes causing me to manually hard shutdown. I recently updated to 7.0.4. I noticed thats when my problems started. I have the 1TB hard drive. I have the 8GB RAM. When I plug my iphone in, iphoto comes up usually causing the entire system to freeze. No other problem works.

  • ITunes freezing when iPhone plugged into USB

    I've had my iPhone since September 08 and never had any problems syncing. Today when I plugged in my (90% charged) iPhone into my computer after adding some music to iTunes the program froze. At first it started to sync but asked if I wanted to update something. Not sure exactly what it was, some type of setting. I said yes and it downloaded whatever that was and did not sync after that. I unplugged the iPhone and replugged it to start the sync. The phone is charging so the USB port is working. I tried restarting the computer and the iPhone, repairing iTunes, different USB ports, and nothing is working. iTunes will function normally until the iPhone is plugged in. Then it freezes.
    I at least have a working phone, but I'd really really like to sync.

    SWEET RELIEF! i've been having this same problem and its nearly been the death of me (and/or my macbook and/or iphone). the second i connect my iphone to USB, itunes immediately just goes unresponsive/hangs. i've been staring at that freaking swirling rainbow for days. i've gone over every single how-to/troubleshooting/etc. topic in apple support, and gotten exactly nowhere.
    but then i found your post, deleted my podcasts, and it was like magic - iphone/itunes sync up and running like clockwork.
    my sanity thanks you... TO EVERYONE ELSE HAVING THE SAME PROB - THIS WORKS!!! JUST DELETE WHATEVER PODCASTS/APPS YOU DOWNLOADED FROM YOUR IPHONE, AND PROBLEM SOLVED.
    LadyNigelia you're my hero.

  • Why does iTunes on my Macbook Pro crash when I plug in my iPod Nano or Classic to sync?

    When I plug my iPod Nano or Classic into my MacBook Pro, with iTunes already open, it crashes iTunes.  Plus, the device doesn't show up in the device column on the left, but on the upper right of the desktop.
