Macbook pro freezes with purple pixels

My macbook doesn't want to boot up. I just get the apple with the rotating wheel that goes on for about 60 seconds. Then it either freezes or magically goes to the desktop. If it does get past the freezing spin wheel to the desktop, I have only a matter of time before these crazy purple pixels just flood about a nice portion of the screen. Once I see the random purple pixels there is nothing I can do to get rid of it, It just freezes and I have to shut it down with the power button. I got the computer in 2008 so I don't know if it's dying from old age or maybe it's a virus. It's really frustrating.

There aren't any Mac viruses.

Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up. I've tried inserting the Mac OS X install disc to run the hardware test(Restart and hold down D), But it still does nothing. Just the black screen. Now I can't get the disc out. I've tried holding down the track pad key upon start up but that doesn't work neither.
What do I do??? Please help.

Remove the battery to find your serial number in the battery bay. Then you can look your MBP up on EveryMac.com:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
That will give you all the information on your Mac.
This is assuming that you have the MBP with the removable battery and not the unibody. The unibody has different graphic chips.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro freezing with external monitor?

I recently got an external monitor to use with my MBP (early 09). So it seems that if I have my monitor hooked up (and maybe also when my power cable is plugged in) and my computer goes into sleep mode, the whole thing freezes and i have to hard restart my MBP. Is there a reason it is doing this? Also, if i close my MBP, instead of the computer going to sleep, it makes it go into mirror display mode and keeps it running on my external monitor (and sometimes it doesnt even go into sleep mode...). i found this thread - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?start=165&tstart=0 and it say to use the line:
    "sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0""
in the terminal to make lion/ML work like SL, but any clue what else that will change?

    Hi sgibson,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with the external display on your MacBook Pro. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature or scope of the issue you are describing. Are you using the display in extended desktop or mirroring mode? If you are using it in extended desktop mode, is the issue limited to the external display, or does it also freeze the primary display as well? Does the same thing happen if the display is directly connected to the MacBook Pro (i.e. without the dock)? If you continue having issues, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful in isolating the cause:

  • Macbook Pro Freezes with Screen Distortion and other problems...

So I've had my 13' Macbook Pro for about 9 months and I am encountering problems with it. My Macbook would sometimes freeze at random and the screen would distort as well, also, the screen would react whenever I would move the laptop around by either reverting back to a normal screen (still frozen) or more distortion which leads me to believe that it might have something to do with the hardware. But all this is temporarily solved when I force shut off my laptop (hold the power button for 3 seconds) and restart it. It can start up again with no problem, but this happens again, more early than usual and becomes more consatnt. However this is lessened whenever I don't use my laptop for an extended amount of time, but it does happens again whenever I do use it for some time.
Another problem I've been encountering is that, at times after I force shut off the laptop, my computer would not turn back on. Instead, the laptop beeps 3 times, pause, then beep 3 times again. I have looked into this and discovered that this means that I have "No Good Banks"..........I have no idea what this means but I guess it means that I might have faulty RAM.
What I ask is that if anyone has had similar problems and if they know what to do or what exactly what the problem is so that I might be able to do something about it.
    Info about Macbook:
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1600 Mhz DDR3

Bump. Anyone have any ideas on this?
I "shut it off" last night, but when I turned it on again tomorrow, it turned out it didn't quite shut down?
It booted to the grey log-in screen, basically.
I've also come to the realisation that my charger isn't registered (the LED isn't orange/green like it usually is), and I can't get a "battery status" (I'm sure it has another name, I just don't know what it is) when I click on the little button on the left hand side of the laptop. Usually, it would show green dots/LEDS to tell me how far along it's charged, but now I get nothing.
I get the distinct feeling something's up with my battery, and maybe my RAM (because of the repeated triple beep after shutting down last night).

  • MacBook Pro Freezing with Multiple Displays

    Hi guys,
I've been having a bit of an issue with my MacBook Pro and its handling of multiple displays. I recently bought a third-party adapter off Amazon (that was highly rated and Prime eligible, so it wasn't some completely unknown, 1 dollar adapter). I'm driving two displays: a 1600x900 display over HDMI, and a 1920x1080 display over DVI via the aforementioned adapter.
Whenever I use the adapter with any of these displays, I get intermittent freezes. The computer will freeze for about 10 seconds every so often, and everything besides audio will halt. Audio continues to play back just fine, just any animations/video will freeze. If I have the iTunes visualizer up, it'll freeze. If I have a video up, same thing.
I initially thought it was the adapter, but upon taking it to another retina MacBook Pro (15"), it works just fine, no freezes. Furthermore, if I do something as nuts as taking said adapter, and throwing an HDMI-to-DVI adapter onto the Thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter, the freezes magically go away. Not sure what's making that work, but its impractical since I already have an HDMI port on my MBP.
Here's a list of what I've tried to suss out the problem:
    1. Reset SMC. No dice.
    2. Zapped PRAM. No dice.
    3. Watched Activity Monitor and Console when freeze occurs. Nothing out of the ordinary appears.
    4. Swapped display configurations around. Not much changed.
    5. Tried seeing if the freezes persist in safe boot: Yes, they do.
    6. Tried seeing if the freezes persist in recovery: Yes, they do.
    7. Tried combining the two adapter I have on hand (DVI-HDMI and TB-DVI) and running one display over HDMI from the combined adapter: Freezes have gone away for whatever reason.
Anyone have any idea what might be going on? If there's any conclusion I can draw from this, it's that either pure DVI output is broken on my machine, or somehow it's still the adapter I bought causing the freezes. I'm not sure what to do, and while I want to take this machine into the Genius Bar and let them poke at it, trying to reproduce this problem might be really hard in that environment. :/

Hello, exactly the same as mine (MBP early '08) now after nearly 3 year, confronted with the same.
Unfortunately, my first MBP late '07 went through the same problem (no flickering the screen just freeze out of nothing, and 2 logic board, memory replacment didn't help, maybe even 3 logic boards - it's a while ;)) Anyway I got this as replacement. And it just worked fine until yesterday.
Bad now, my AppleCare startet with the first MBP and so its not longer valid. Have my Genius appointment on Saturday and hope it will not be to frustrating.
As 3 years ago I have been reading through the forums and later followd partly these Nvidia discussion, seems to me there is more behind and the root cause never was found. And since Apple has changed the model entirely, I guess rc will never be found.
I will let you know the outcome of the talk on Saturday.

  • MacBook Pro freezes with external monitor

Hardware: A mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel, OSX 10.10.1, 8 GB RAM, connected to 23-inch Dell monitor via VGA through a Targus dock.
The external monitor frequently (four times today) freezes for no apparent reason. The cursor moves around the screen, but won't respond to clicks. The only way to clear the problem is to force a power down and reboot.
    What's up?

  • Macbook pro freezes with grayed screen

    MacBook Pro 5,5; OSX 10.6.8
Repeatedly crashes with a translucent gray veil that moves down the screen, and a message box in the middle of the page saying you have to turn off the computer by holding down the power button and then restart.
I think this happens almost always in Safari or Thunderbird - the programs most used.

I hope someone has a suggestion about fixing the problem!

    Good luck!

Reinstall the old memory and see if it goes away
If it does then the new memory is bad

  • On OSX Lion, My MacBook Pro freezes with rainbow on log in screen.

When I restart or shut down the rainbow circle shows up on my log in screen. I've also noticed a slight battery life changed. My MacBook Pro is 2.4GHz Core i5. I taught the update OSX Lion 10.7.1 helped but it didn't.
    Please Help. Thanks.

Yep, because unchecking the 'Automatic graphics switching' uses your AMD or GeForce graphics card instead of the low power usage Intel onboard graphics. This is why I don't use the login screen. I just automatically log in. I'd rather have Apple fix the login screen lockup in a future dot release.
To see what I mean, click on the Apple in the upper left corner of your menu bar, then 'About this Mac' then the 'More Info...' button and look at the Graphics. It should say your AMD or GeForce graphics card. When that checkbox is checked and you log in, the Graphics info should show your Intel onboard graphics card.

  • Macbook pro freezes with iPod connected with lid closed

I've noticed that whenever I have my iPod connected to my MBP, and I close the lid, often times the MBP won't go to sleep, the latch light stays a constant bright. When I try opening the lid, fans and the hard drive are spinning, and nothing is responsive. I have to go with a hard shut down.
    What's up with that?

  • MacBook Pro Freezing with Black Bars

Alright, so today my Mac has frozen twice with odd black bars on the screen.
When this happened I had preview open and was printing some documents, nothing scary at all.
I am using Mavericks and my mac is a 2010 model.
After my my mac froze I had no other choice but to hold the power button down until it powered off and back on.
There was no way to move the mouse or even see the finder bar thing at the top to click the Apple and restart.
After this happened twice I stopped and am time machining it as I type this.
My computer does seem to be running on the slower side too.
Has as anyone else experienced this?
Does anyone know what this means for my mac?
Amy ideas of how to fix it?
I would greatly appreciate any input!

Alright, so today my Mac has frozen twice with odd black bars on the screen.
Zap the pram.  If that does not resolve your issue, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • MacBook Pro 17" with Intel Core 2 Duo startup freeze with 10.6.8?

With my MacBook Pro 17" with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz startup freeze with 10.6.8 - I had problems after several SW upgrades. Startup ends every time in a freeze or a crash, nothing is running, i am not able to type in the password. it starts in beginning with thin colored disrupting lines on the display and this get more and more and than freeze the system.
"Save Boot", startup with shift shows no problems, display is ok, no freeze. So something must new in the video-driver. Is there any driver what I can delete or any new software to help in this issue?

try to boot off the cd installazzione, when the screen appears to follow thePACKING screen viewing. If you've already looked in the manual are your problem?

  • New Macbook Pro 15' with Retina Display Keeps Freezing Completely

Last week I got a Late 2013 Macbook Pro 15' with Retina Display (currently running OS X Mavericks 10.9.1) . However since last Thursday it keeps freezing. It usually happens 2-4 times in a day. The entire computer will freeze completly, I'll be unable to move the cursor with the trackpad and the keyboard freezes up as well. The only way to ameliorate the problem is by shutting down the computer by pressing down on the power button and then turning it back on. When my Mac starts up again it works completely normally. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I recently read that this was happening to some 13' Mac's (until Apple fixed it) however I haven't been able to find information regarding the same problem on a 15' Mac. Thanks in advance!

Mine isn't new model of retina mbp.
Now I'm re-installing 10.9 and I want to try it for some times.
However my mac is out of warranty and if it is a hardware problem there are no solutions for me (logic board change costs $1.000 or so).
After reinstalling 10.9, if I'll not resolve, I want to try to change thermal grease for GPU and CPU...
