Macbook Pro Freezing for 3 Minutes Every Hour

I have a Macbook Pro with a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of memory (1067 MHz DDR3), running OS X 10.8.4.
Within the past couple weeks, my computer has started freezing for about 3 minutes at a time, exactly one hour apart. The time that it freezes seems to vary slightly based on how many/which programs I currently have running, but as long as my open programs don't change, it always sticks to that schedule (e.g., for most of today it has been every 40 minutes after the hour, so 3:40, 4:40, 5:40, etc).
I looked at my console logs around this time, and it has roughly the same thing going on each time it freezes.

From what I can tell, it starts to freeze around x:40, and then it appears to start working again when the first I/O error is listed. It works for maybe 10 seconds or so, then freezes up again until the second I/O error, at which point it is fine for an hour.
Does anybody have any ideas about what I can do? Thanks in advance for any help.

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

  • Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive

Macbook pro freezes for no reason even after installing 10.8 on a brand new hard drive.
Tried to reset pram, smc, nvram.
    Tried installing new RAM.
    Tried installing new hard drive.
You should know that my internal drive is installed in a cheap external case and plugged in a USB 2.0 port because i am waiting for a new hard drive cable.all
Yep all good things happened to me...i don't know if all these problems are linked, ahh and also my trackpad is behaving very erraticaly sometimes, it's like it is possessed by a ghost. My computer is not under warranty anymore so i'd like to avoid a trip to the Apple store but i'm close to doing just that.
    Any help appreciated...

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:

would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

  • 2011 17" MacBook Pro freezes for over 5 mins on user password

    Hey everyone,
I installed Yosemite on my 2011 17" MacBook Pro. Since then, after a period of my computer being on or after sleep, it appears that the process that handles login using my user password hangs for a bit and then proceeds to work.
On the login screen, after I enter my password, the focus is drawn off of the password field, and then the computer just sits for what seems to be about 5-7 minutes. This also happens when OS X asks me to enter my password to install / uninstall something; the login window just sits there and does nothing.
It doesn't happen right after a restart, and it seems like it happens more often after the computer goes to sleep and wakes back up, or has just been running for a while.
A couple other possibly related problems is that my system will sometimes just start to slow down and every app will slowly become unresponsive, sometimes to the point where I have to use the power button to do a hard reset. Also I've noticed that my system won't remember that I set my screensaver to "never" but will reset itself to "15 minutes" (which is annoying, because after I come back from the screensaver, my system takes a long time to log back in).
I can't do a system reinstall right now, and I've tried to do PRAM resets and disk repairs. Maybe I'm googling the wrong words, but I've searched and I can't find threads with my exact issue.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook Pro freezes for awhile then resumes

I am running on a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Inter Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, and my OS version is 10.8.2. The MBP always will stop responding for half a minute and this occurs very frequently. When that happens, the rainbow wheel will appear. I can't do anything but wait for it to respond again. Sometimes, the whole screen will freeze.
I have sent my MBP to a local authorised reseller for diagnosis and it came back positive. The technician didn't detect any issues and they claimed the "freeze" is due to a slow machine running on OS Lion but that just doesn't make sense. Even if it is slow, it wont completely halt processing but my case is that.
Anyway, appreciate your input on the possible issues and its remedy.
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Why is my 2010 macbook pro freezing and shutting down every time I start it?

Today, after using my macbook pro to upload pictures from my iphone, my computer started having problems and shutting down. The screen goes gray and a box pops up saying that a problem exists and that I need to restart my computer. I've only had the macbook since last November, so I don't understand why I've been having so many problems with it. This happened a few times to a lesser extent in Senegal when I was there for 5 months. I used a mac power adapter so I don't think it could be an over-charge problem.
    Please help!

Sounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
    Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit.

  • My Macbook pro freezes for 30 seconds upon flipping it open to start up, why?

I have a Macbook pro (mid 2012) and I went to install Mavericks but my computer crashed horribly. I couldn't get any of the keyboard shortcuts to work so I had to take it and turns out some sort of driver kernal needed to be rebuilt by the local mac place. Now, when I flip the computer open to load it up, it freezes for about 30 seconds after the grey loading screen with the bar. My mouse and window to type in my password shows up, but the computer is completely unresponsive at this time. Any way to fix this? I used to be able to just flip my laptop open before the update and get right to using it, its my favorite part about my macbook pro, would like to regain this quickness.... Thanks

  • MacBook Pro freezes after 30 minutes

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro which I bought in April 2008 – so it's now 3 years old.
It has 4gig of RAM and an Apple service-centre-fitted 500gig hard drive fitted a year ago.
Now, if I restart my laptop it 'locks' after about 30 minutes: the cursor doesn't move and I can't force quit, so all I can do is hold the power button down until it reboots.
The only apps running at the time were Mail and Safari, plus the likes of Little Snapper etc in the background.
The laptop is very hot underneath.
I used to notice the fan come on when surfing sites with Flash – but I haven't noticed the fan go on in maybe a week or more. So my first guess was that a fan had stopped working.
I took the laptop to the only Apple service centre in Dubai a week ago, and 2 engineers have looked at it. They say they have run a number of standard tests and can't find anything wrong.
Have you any ideas which I can suggest to them when I ring them tomorrow?
Or any questions I can ask them such as "Have you run a ____ test?"
    Thanks!

The Late 2007 and Early 2008 MBPs share a troublesome graphics chipset called the Nvidea 8600M GT. The failure is heat-related. You should ask the techs if they have performed the Apple test that is used to diagnose the probelm described in this Apple Repair Extension Program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Print out the article and take if with you.
Your symptoms are not quite to the point of those mentioned but it is worth the inquiry. You can use System Profiler (in Applications > Utiltites) to check the chipset condition. Launch System Profiler; the first screen:
will tell you if yours is among the models affected by the Nvidea issue. If the Model Identifier is MacBookPro3,1 or 4,1, you have the affected chipset. Now click on "Graphics/Displays and note the new screen:
If the line "PCIe Lane Width" reads anything other than "x16" your chipset is falling or has failed.
All Macs use thermal sensing that will shut down the computer if the core temperatures approach the level that could damage the processor. For your model, it is about 100C. If the chipset does not report suspicious values, you need to see if some background process is overactive and using up processor cycles. Use the computer for a while, then close all user apps and launch Activity Monitor (also in the Utiltiies folder).
Set AM's "show" option to "All Processes" and highlight the column "%CPU" to sort by processor usage:
Watch the screen for a minute or two, noting any processes that bubble to the top and are using 20% or more of the cycles. Note the name of any offenders and post here so we can tell you if they can be eliminated.
Are you using an external monitor in "Clamshell mode" (display lid closed)? That can trap a huge amount of heat in a MBP with silver keys. The case bottom is a heat sink--if the rubber feet are broken off, put something under the case to allow air underneath. The hinge area on the rear of the case is an important exhaust vent. Make sure noting is pushed agains the case there.
I hope this gives you a starting point.

why macbook pro freezes a lot for me now?

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

Recently, within the past week, my OS has began freezing for several seconds every 40 seconds or so. I had not downloaded any applications around the time this began. The last app I downloaded was iMovie 6 (for the editing features), I downloaded this several days after this problem began. The last app I downloaded BEFORE the problem began was UnRarX, which I downloaded back in April. I have no idea how to check my specs, and computer info, please tell me how to get this and I will tell you.

Call AppleCare. Whenever you buy a new Mac, discs are always supplied with them. Usually they come in a white envelope that is square with the user manual in the box. If you bought it from a non-Apple source, you should call them and ask them to send you the disc. It isn't their's to keep, and they can call AppleCare to order them. And no, it isn't in the Utilities folder. It is a physical optical disc that looks like a music CD, but says MacBook Pro on it.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
*downgrade the Flash player to version 10.3 or 11.2

  • Late 2012 13-in Retina MacBook Pro Freezing

I am having a problem with my MacBook Pro freezing and I cannot for my life figure out why. It seems that this started occuring about a month after my update to 10.8.5 and I have not installed any new programs since doing so. The screen will flash blue quickly (not every time) and then my keyboard and trackpad are un-responsive for 30-seconds to a minute. I took it to an Apple store and they thought it might have something to do with Apple TV but offered no real solution. I have bluetooth totally turned off as well. Here is my information, any help would be greatly appreciated:

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
