Macbook Pro freezing up during videos...
So I recently got a mid-2010 Macbook Pro in great condition form eBay. It is 17" running Snow Leopard.
2.53 GHz Intel Dual Core i5 Processor
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM
I don't know much about video cards, but it says it has two:
Intel HD Graphics (Built-In, 288MB VRAM)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (PCle, 512MB VRAM)
When I try to watch YouTube videos in HD or HD videos on my hard drive, they freeze up and they are choppy. The audio plays fine, but the video kind of pauses in one spot, then catches up with the video like 20 seconds later only for a milli-second, so basically it's just changing frames.
Being a video editor, this is kinda horrible for me... obviously it's out of warranty being mid-2010.
Is it a video card problem or something else?
Zack
The issue is almost definitely a result of the video not dealing well with the built-in Intel graphics. Just a bit of an education. The Intel graphics is "integrated" with the CPU, sharing memory. It is slower and less powerful, but it uses less power, so it's turned on when you use the battery. The "discret" video is the nVidia, which has it's own memory. By the way, neither are "cards", they are just chips built into the motherboard. The nVidia is much more powerful, does not share memory with the main processor, but uses a lot of energy, so wears out the battery.
If you are watching HD videos, you MUST use the nVidia chip. Newer MacBook Pro's have no issues like this.
Download gfxCardStatus and install it. This will give you full control over the graphics "cards". Also, only watch HD videos while connected to the carger, so that the higher power video processor is used.
Cleaning out your cache is not worth the time. Your computer programs actually require caches, but it's not the issue here. It's just which card is being chosen by the operating system.
Hope this helps.

17 Macbook Pro, freezing while rendering video in FCP
Hi I have a late 2008 Model MacBook Pro 17. My Macbook keeps freezing during rendering in Final Cut Pro 7. Its been doing this for 3 weeks or so. I originally thought a SSD was the way to go, but I think I may really need a new processor. Im a little confused on what I should buy and what fits my MacBook Pro. What I want is to fix the rendering freezing and shorten the rendering time. I'd appreciate any advice or ideas. Is my Macbook compatible to a Intel i7 or i5? Buying a new Macbook Pro is not an option at this point. Thank you in advance.
Here are the specs on my laptop:
MacBookPro4,1
2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8 GB RAM
500gb HDD Momentus 7200 SATA 3Gb/s
GeForce 8600M GTHi instantclassic99,
I do have this article of key combinations on startup:
Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533
I would try this with a wired Apple keyboard if possible. Specifically, I'd try:
Press Option during startup
Start up in Startup Manager, where you can select an OS X volume or network volume to start from.
Cheers!

Macbook pro - freezes when streaming video
my macbook pro ( mid 2009) - 8 GB RAM and maverick OS - freezes whenever i stream video in it .. it doesnot happen immediately but after 15-30 min
i need to hardboot it afte that .. then comes the funny part .. when i reboot usually i get the dreaded "flashing" question mark
so i need to do this to get back on track
1. reboot by pressing the "option" key and select the disk to boot from
2. then reboot again by pressing "command" + "option" + P + R - ( reset PRAM )
now voila back in business
this happened 2-3 times in the last 1 week
please dont tell me i need to change the logic board :-)
unless otherwise i stream video, i dont have any issues
( infact only 2 weeks back genius bar ran a hardware test when i took for RAM upgrade and found everything is ok )
thanks in advance
regardsThe startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to acces the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk. -
MacBook Pro shuts off during video conversion/heavy CPU usage
I'm not quite sure how to troubleshoot this, and I'm curious if anyone has experienced this, or has any suggestions.
Whenever I do a video conversion, about 10 minutes in, my MacBook Pro just shuts off. Some examples of the kind of video conversions I'm doing are, exporting an EyeTV recording to iTunes, or converting a video already in iTunes to AppleTV or iPod/iPhone. Both of these examples are using Quicktime, I'm assuming?
I did a clean reinstall of Tiger, and the problem was still there. And, after upgrading to Leopard, the problem is still there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!Could be due to overheating. Install iStat Menus, show CPU use, CPU temp, and fan speed in the menu bar, and start converting. If CPU use is pegged, fans are at 6000 rpm, and temp rises to/above 90 C, then your MBP shuts off, that's the issue.
There are some early models of MBPs that had too much thermal paste, leading to excessive heat build up. -
2010 MacBook Pro freezes up during use with black screen
I have an i7 Mid 2010 MBP with 8GB of RAM, SSD and 10.6.8. It has been freezing up on me with a black screen and looping audio, and I have to hold down the power button to reset it. It seems to freeze most when I have either Firefox or Parallels open. Does anybody have any idea what would be causing this? If I were to post the Error Report here, is there any information in it I should delete first so that I don't accidentally show everybody my personal information? Thanks.
Satchow, I have the same problem!!!
It's hard to believe that I spent 4.500 dollars in a notebook from a company with such fame and with this huge fail.
What are they going to do about it? Gave us a new one? Its not our problem.
Apple Inc. have to make a recall!!! What do you think about it, my friends?
Regards,
Rodrigo TP

my macbook pro freezes when I use peripherals, thunderbolt, USB.... and it becomes imposible to edit HD videos, any suggestions?
The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
MacBook Pro Freezes When Viewing Any Video with new iTunes
I, too, am having problems with the latest iTunes update. My MacBook Pro freezes completely. Total lock-up. This happens when trying to view any video, including video podcasts. I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to get my laptop to turn off. Any other MBP users experiencing this?
Hi there, I have the same problem as you guys, everything was fine before iTunes 7.6 or iTunes 7.6.1 I tried both, before those updates I could watch any video in iTunes without any issue, after that when I play a video, a random video my Macbook freeze totally, sometimes comes alive but 90% of the cases I have to make a hard shutdown (press and hold the power button). I can't believe this kind of bugs in a software that is so mature. Help please!
-
When I turn on a video the screen on my MacBook Pro freezes. I've been through Apple Care and they couldn't fix the computer. I think the fan and the graphics are the problems. I can restart after two attempts. Sometimes I use SAFEBOOT
Please advise the model MBP you have and the OSX you have installed.
Also try a SMC reset:

My MacBook pro freezes during start up after 30 secs. Any ideas?
My MacBook pro freezes during startup while the logo is still showing and the moving circle stops after about 30 seconds. Any ideas please?
On my Mac that DSMOS message appears about 20 seconds into the boot process. Booting finishes about 30 seconds after that.
Do those letters "v" really appear on the screen?
Unfortunately, if those are the last messages on the screen, I see nothing there that explains the hang. The next message I see after the DSMOS message is one about an AirPort daemon, although I'm not sure I understand any connection there might be between that and your hang.
Since you don't have a system restore disc you won't be able to do the next thing I was going to suggest, which is to run the diagnostics that came with that Mac. If you have an OS X 10.6 installation disc, you could try reinstalling OS X over the top of what's on it now. Right after that finishes use Software Update to apply any missing OS X updates, or download and install the "combo" updater for the version of OS X 10.6 that you want. If that Mac has a software problem doing that might help. -
MacBook Pro freezes during start up and safe boot
MacBook Pro freezes during start up and will not start in safe boot in recovery, it goes back to apple screen with spinning gear
Stinkster,
does your MacBook Pro have a removable battery? If so, then it originally came with grey installation DVDs. If it doesn’t have a removable battery, look on the bottom of your MacBook Pro for its serial number (it’s etched there in tiny print). If its serial number has eleven characters, write down the last three of them; if it has twelve, write down the last four. Include the three or four characters in your reply; they can determine which model MacBook Pro you have, and the model will determine whether it originally came with grey installation DVDs or not.
If your MacBook Pro did originally come with grey installation DVDs, then you’re going to need to find them (or buy a replacement pair from Apple or iFixit) to reïnstall Mac OS X on your current hard drive, or to install it on a replacement hard drive. -

TS3423 why macbook pro freezes a lot for me now?
why macbook pro freezes a lot for me now?
I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation. My computer did have the faulty part you linked to. I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager. Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge. They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test. They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above. I've never had this experience before. Even brand new, I got occasional crashes. Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow. Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed. Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton. -
Late 2012 13-in Retina MacBook Pro Freezing
I am having a problem with my MacBook Pro freezing and I cannot for my life figure out why. It seems that this started occuring about a month after my update to 10.8.5 and I have not installed any new programs since doing so. The screen will flash blue quickly (not every time) and then my keyboard and trackpad are un-responsive for 30-seconds to a minute. I took it to an Apple store and they thought it might have something to do with Apple TV but offered no real solution. I have bluetooth totally turned off as well. Here is my information, any help would be greatly appreciated:

This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. -
My Macbook pro freezes several times a day, help.
My MacBook Pro freezes way too much. It just randomly freezes, whether it be when I'm surfing the web, or I casually move it, it just freezes, and I have no idea what to do. Should I take it to the apple store?
if it happens often while surfing the web its probably flash that is slowing it down open safari then choose safari extensions and install the click to flash plug in it should fix your problem another reason why that could happen is when your computer gets to warm
open the activity monitor programm and check under the processes once in a while if you see the processs kernel root using up a 400 percent of your cpu right before or during the crash then thats the reason, which means your computer is getting to hot
try preventing that by putting it on two books so air can reach the underside of your macbook
