MACBOOK PRO FRIED?!
Hi, I just got the new MacBook Pro about 4 months ago for graduation. I used it for a little bit and it was fine and then I went out. Just a few hours later I had to use it again and the screen wouldn't come on. There was no power at all. So I took it to a computer store on campus and they told me that the logic board was fried. Now, I don't have AppleCare yet, but he said that I automatically have a one year warranty for it if it's not user error. Now if it's water damage them I'll have to pay. I haven't ever spilled anything on it, but he said he had to check for water damage just in case. What are the chances that it somehow water damage? Is there a chance that I just had a bad logic board?
Question is......did you spill water on it?
if not you're covered.

How do I transfer CS5.5 from an old macbook pro to a new one via firewire?
My old MacBook Pro fried its graphics card and I need to transfer all of my data across to my new macBook Pro. I have everything backed up on a hard drive but when I try to open it it says that i can't because t is on a Time Machine Back-up. How do I get it to open? Do i need to get a new serial number? Not sure what to do from here.
You need to reinstall on your new MacBook Pro from your original media (if you purchased a DVD), or from the backup you made of the installation files.
You cannot successfully migrate CS5.5 using FireWire. That would not be successful. You can use the same serial number you had before. However, if you used all your two activations, you may have to Adobe to remove its listing of your old Mac so you don't lose one activation. -
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro seemingly fried by Mavericks
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I installed Mavericks onto a couple of days after general release. Everything was fine with it for a week or so, and then I started to notice a couple of weird errors crop up - I had an error come up on iTunes (I think the error code was 13024) and apps would start to not open. I thought it might need a restart, so I rebooted. On restart my computer then hung on the grey startup screen with the loading wheel spinning perenially. After 10 attempts, I tried every alternate startup key input I could think of to try and get my computer in action (Reset NVRAM, Safe Boot, etc.) The first one to 'work' was Startup Manager by pressing Option. I opened Recovery Mode and tried verifying disk permissions. This threw up a TON of errors. On repairing, they all gave a me Error-22. Repair Disk didn't work either. I then tried restarting again to see if anything had been changed to boot as usual. Again, nothing.
Next I pressed D on startup to run an AHT. This actually successfully booted to my desktop and could explore Finder and see my files etc. No applications would open and Quick Look would not let me view any files. System Preferences would also not let me launch any preference panes. Pretty much anything I clicked yielded a dialog box with a message along the lines of "Unapproved caller: SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software."
My whole system froze up on the rainbow wheel after I had to relaunch Finder from the Force Quit menu after testing Quick Look. Now when I boot into the Startup Manager neither my hard drive or the recovery drive are visible, and I only have the option to run Internet Recovery (where I am writing this post from). Normal startup just gives me a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I'm fairly sure Mavericks has totally fried my hard drive. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do about this or has had something similar happen to them?Dude i had same problem and also running same hardware as yours, i complety fomated my HDD and reinstalled everything from scratch. That did not help me, i thought it could be my HDD getting corrupted (reason why i thought that is becuase whenever "unapproved caller" showed up at same time everything on my HDD went read only mode). Hence i replaced HDD and put in new one, i dont get unapproved caller anymore.
But there is still a problem somewhere, becuase my MBP freezes and HDD goes to read only mode, the only solution is to restart my mac sometimes multiple times.
I think both these events are mutually exculsive.
I have been troubled with this for about week now and very much gave up all hopes on my MBP. -
MacBook Pro power adapters dying, keys frying, strange heat problem
I've got a very frustrating and mysterious major situation going on with my MBPro. I'm living in Peru in the jungle. I've got a basic electric hookup that's caused no problems for the few electrical devices I've got: small dorm-size fridge, a lightbulb, speaker system, iPhone, iPod, and, until recently a MacBook I had borrowed temporarily from a friend here. I recently visited the states and returned with my MacBook Pro which I need for work down here. Thusly my troubles began.
I noticed pretty quickly the power adapter got super hot, could easily fry an egg on it sometimes. One night I unplugged the Magsafe adapter from the MBP for safekeeping, slept, and in the a.m., the adapter (unplugged from the Mac but still plugged into the wall outlet) was terribly hot. Does this make any sense? It gets stranger & worse...
I used the Mac later that day and within a couple hours two of the keyboard keys stopped working for good (I was later able to remap these keys using a 3rd party program). The next day the Magsafe adapter stopped working. Certainly heat had something to do with it, despite the fact that MagSafes have built-in safeguards whereby they (should) shut down temporarily if overheated. But this sucker was dead.
A friend from the states visited me 3 weeks later and brought two more adapters ordered from Amazon.com, each a different generic brand that had good customer reviews.
The first, which looks just like a MagSafe, worked fine but died in a week. Again, it would get superhot not even plugged into the MBP (like the other one). I should note the MBP also was always hot to super hot. Also the large plastic square power hub of the adapter, even after it died, would get hot if plugged in, it just wouldn't power the Mac.
The other (3rd) adapter worked for awhile, and its rectangular power bar hub would only get a little hot. But the Mac would still get insanely hot, as did the very top of the adapter plug - the part with the teeth that go into the MBP. Within 2 weeks, the adapter wouldn't work unless I applied pressure on it against the Mac. Then it stopped working even with pressure applied.
Here's where it gets even stranger:
What I noticed was that the two outermost of the five teeth on the plug had been somehow pushed further in, such that they couldn't make contact with the MBP (I guess the pressure I was manually applying helped this for awhile until the teeth sank even much further in). How and why in the world did this happen?
Desperate, I brought the two adapters to an electrician, and had him combine the good teeth end piece from the previous generic Magsafe with the adapter whose teeth caved in. Viola, it worked...but just for three days. Amazingly the two outer teeth of the new hybrid plug ALSO retreated and couldn't make contact. Furthermore, I noticed some dried plastic juice gunk around them and concluded that the heat of the connection to the Mac was somehow mysteriously melting the glue around these teeth and also causing them to push further into the adapter more. I know: sounds almost impossible. But this is what happened, TWICE.
Obviously there is an overall problem here, one which concerns heat, among whatever else. It's hot here in the jungle. While my other appliances have had no problem, I've certainly noticed the fridge and speaker subwoofer system run hot. But the electricity reading is normal, and I have a current regulator stabilizing the electrical flow. And the previous MacBook (not Pro) had no problems. And yes the fans on the MBP work. And in general the electricity here works fine to run people's electronics, including some very large freezer units and plasma TVs.
I'm at a loss as to what to do and to how to identify the problem beyond "heat". If I don't get the MBP working normally I can, in effect, no longer be here as it's essential to my work. Therefore any help would be most awesome and greatly appreciated. Thanks.1) Make sure you have the right adapter type for your model of MacBook. There are 45w, 60w, and 85w adapters. Pro's either take the 60 or 85 watt.
2) Most 3rd party adapters I have tried are junk, junk, junk. They quit working, have melted, have fried my macbook, and even caught on fire.
Now what it sounds like to me is maybe your are having an issue with a loose magsafe board. This was a big problem with the white macbooks( I realize that is not what yours is). The MagSafe board (part where your charger plugs into the computer) gets pushed in ever so slightly and if the connection between your adapter and the board is not precise it can cause issues of anything from overcharging and shutting off the adapter, overheating, damaging your Magsafe board, and making the adapter useless. The best way to tell if it is this is if you have to wiggle your adapter to get it to charge correctly. (Note I have never seen the happen with the T-shaped MagSafe 1.0 but I wouldn't doubt it, but I know it happens with the MagSafe 2.0 L shaped adapters.) -

I do have a current regulator or "stabilazador" here. The LED changes often from green (normal) to yellow (low). I don't understand why it indicates these changes in voltage if it's its job to stabilize them anyway. But anyway I bought it on suggestion amidst this crisis but it hasn't helped none, and even it gets hot sometimes, even when nothings plugged into it.
These generic adapters I bought both had a plethora of rather detailed good reviews (and a few bad) that seemed beyond the ambitions of counterfeiters.
In any case, I'm pretty sure the adopters are not at issue within my problem here. I'm starting to really think the electrical hookup is at fault, but thanks much for your input. -
Apple Genius Bar, fried MacBook Pro HDD?
Hello,
Think my MacBook Pro's HDD has died. It's a replacement I installed myself - does this mean a Genius won't diagnose the problem for me?
I am happy to replace the HDD again, but just wanted to me sure it was th HDD before paying for another.
Thanks,

I expect so.
just wanted to me sure it was th HDD before paying for another.
(a) Re-install the original one. Test it thoroughly for a couple of days. If it works as per specs, then the replacement drive is the problem. If it comes up with problems, then the problem might be somewhere else (the SATA cable is sometimes the culprit). If the MBP under warranty, take it to Apple Store or AASP for a check.
(b) Install the problem HDD in another computer or in an ext'l enclosure. Test thoroughly. If no problem, then the problem must be with the MBP. See (a). -
I have frequent instances of my Macbook Pro beeping 3 times and then I have to forcefully shut it down by pressing the power button. What is this all about? Please help. Thank you.

There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
Run Rember first... call back with results.
Good luck,
Clinton -
Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics
I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
off.
3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

Macbook Pro keeps crashing due to GPU Panic
Hardware
MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012
2,6 GhZ Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
APPLE SSD SM256E Media
Operating System

Hi,
for a couple of days now my Macbook crashes again and again during usage.
When does it happen?
Especially when using external displays or external hard drives, but also when using none of them.
How does it happen?
The screen turns black. Sometimes it reboots automatically, sometimes the screen is just black and the Macbook is still on. Then I have to force it to reboot.
When it reboots, sometimes the screen keeps black and I have to switch it off again. Sometimes when the loading bar appears it crashed during this startup process.
Troubleshooting/What I have done so far
I used the Disk Utility to check and repair the disk. It didn’t find an error.
I ran the repair mode when rebooting with pressing „d“ in the beginning. I did the fast report and the more advanced report. Nothing found either.
I did a PRAM reset several times.
After doing this procedure a couple of times, I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Yosemite. A clean new installation. After that it happens not that often anymore, but it happens.

Mid-2010 Macbook pro repeated crashes after service, HELP!
I have a mid-2010 Macbook pro with the i7 and 8gb of crucial ram. I have had this problem for months and finally took it into the authorized Mac repair center where I live. The nearest apple store is 4 hours away. He put it through 3 days of testing and found no problems with any hardware, including the RAM. I can't find my apple ram so I haven't tried to run my laptop with that. Anyway, we did a HD wipe and restored from the recovery drive to see if that was the issue. No luck. The logic board also passed all tests. The computer crashes with any amount of stress (garageband, iPhoto, or simply surfing the web with an external display) and is impossible to get work done. I'll paste the crash report below. I would love to try to find another solution!
Thanks all,
Brian

Thunderbolt Bus:I have a mid-2010 Macbook pro with the i7 and 8gb of crucial ram.
Thanks all,
Brian

15" Macbook Pro Mid 2010 . Constant Kernel Panic and Reboot
Hello, im having this issue from six months ago. The problem its a constant rebooting of my mac , when turned on shows a Kernel Panic inform that i copy here. I have contacted the tech support here in my country ( Argentina ) but they can not solve the problem. They told me than cand be a logic board issue, but in all the hardware test the macbook get an OK ! The only strange they discover is a electric problem in the usb ports, but i dont have any problems whith pen drives or usb external disks.
The rebooting its unpredicible , but in some cases like using the spacebar for previewing files if i do it five or six times it reboots instantly showing then the Kernel Error.
I really nedd help !
Thank you, and sorry for the monkey insland English !

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. -
MacBook Pro Mid-2010 15" Frequent Kernel Panics
Hello all,
I have been experiencing frequent kernel panic shutdowns (2-3 a day) since upgrading to Yosemite. To compound matters, after each panic is an additional restart as my computer is already in the process of restarting, so I never get the crash log or option to send it, and I can't decipher the logs in Console to find them--if they exist.
This is also happening to my daughter's identical model, and was happening after updating to 10.9.5 a while ago. I took my laptop to the Genius bar and they tried to tell me there was an issue with my video card (GPU) and that it would need replacing. I was doubtful about that diagnosis and opted not to repair (no time to give up my computer for the time needed anyway), and with my daughter's problem I seem to be vindicated. Prior to installing Yosemite I reinstalled 10.9.5 and was crash-free for a week before upgrading to Yosemite. Now the problem is getting worse, and reinstalling did not fix it.
I am attaching my daughter's recent crash log with the same GPU incident that the Genius showed me.
Any ideas or inspiration would be welcome.
Thanks,
Lou

Thunderbolt Bus:Thanks for your reply. But please try to understand why we (affected people) are not happy for this problem.
Actually Apple store's staff also told me that is known "H/W" fault when i brought my macbook to run VST last week.
Apple claimed this is H/W fault and suggested us to change logic board. The interesting thing is, this problem was existed from long time ago. Please check this URL > MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video - Apple Support
After read the page above, you should understand that version 10.8 or before also got this "H/W" problem but Apple tried to fix this for 10.8 or before.
From 10.9, no more support for this problem. Until 10.10 released, you may search "GPUPanic 2010 mid macbook" from google and you will see how many people was affected by this problem.
I also want to classify what is the definition of H/W fault. If apple can isolate the bug of the logic which was burnt on logic board (version 10.8 or before), then this is software fix for H/W fault.
If Apple OS development team can just check our macbook version from OS and escape the "H/W" logic bug, all 2010 mid macbook will not be affected again.
For real H/W fault, I don't think so many people will see same error at same period (after upgraded to 10.10) like this > ... AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127
The important point is, Apple provided OS update for us before 10.8, then we didnt know the actual graphic card's problem.
We trusted Apple and bought macbook. But Apple told us that our graphic card got "H/W" fault and no more support from 10.9.
I like macbook and saved money to buy this in 2010. Using it carefully up to now. Finally Apple told me that my macbook's graphic card got problem and asked me to change(buy) logic board for fixing this problem.
In Sep 2014, I'd just bought new macbook for my girl friend which is new model 2014 15" macbook pro. I told her macbook is very stable and have no problem. What a big joke to me......and to all affected people. -
I believe I am experiencing the problems discussed in this article: http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/
However I am not sure. I am not that tech savvy... Anyway my computer is becoming unusable. Its truly driving me crazy. Its worth noting that I would have this problem OCCASIONALLY while running Mavericks, since the update it has become far me frequent: Computer Restarts shows message "you computer has restarted because of a problem" or sometimes my screen just goes black, the sound still plays. Pasted below is the error report. Can anyone tell me, do I have the common problem as discussed in the article or something else? I have had this machine for about 18 months, already had to replace the SSD, now this. It looks like I maybe on my way to having a $3k paperweight. Please help!

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
My MacBook Pro is a lemon!
I have the MacBook pro 2.16 C2D that I purchased April of 2007. Since I have owned it, the battery was fried and needed to be replaced (warranty repair), the palm rest and mouse button paint has pitted and chipped forcing me to use a sticker to cover up the damage (apple did not want to repair "cosmetic" issues under warranty), the fan on the left side got jammed with some tape that is used in the assembly process (happened right after the warranty expired), the DVD drive will not read software DVD's or any burned media (within a month of warranty expiring), and now the USB port on the left side stopped working.
For two grand you would expect a computer like this to last more then 18 monthsI empathize with your frustration but venting here will not help you. Call AppleCare and ask to speak to a customer representative. Explain the problem. Be firm but nice.

Can't erase and install SNow Leopard on old MacBook Pro
I am trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro3,1. I boot up with the installation disc, get to pick a language but then a window pops up that says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer" and gives me the options to Restore from Backup or Restart.
I had upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on this machine which I used for months, but it is currently running off the hard drive of a new MacBook Pro that got fried. The installation disk I am using is the one I got with that unfortunate machine. Could this be the problem?
Any other suggestions?
Other info: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (108504)
Other History: The machine I am trying to erase and install on recently had its logic board replaced under warranty because of the NVIDIA graphics card issue. I have not found the service centre in South Africa to be very trustworthy, in fact the first time they claimed to have replaced the logic board, the computer (which had been intermittently failing to boot up) immediately started displaying the same problems. Another mac shop said to me that the "new" logic board looked so dusty that it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been replaced a week prior. Anyway, it has ostensibly been replaced again, along with a faulty superdrive.
When it went back to the service centre, they put in the hard drive of another, new, MacBook Pro of mine that got fried in an unrelated incident
Please help! I want to give this machine to an employee but
a) want to make sure it's stable and functioning properly, and
b) want to give it a clean slate with my personal data and settings erased. You need a retail Snow Leopard installation disk. Available for $29 USD. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL
Once you install it onto the old machine, you can use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff and apps from the other machine.
