MacBook Pro gets way too hot. Performance suffers

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and have found that it is incapable of handling either a simple game, multiple applications, or an additional monitor without running into some extreme heat problems. I realize that an additional monitor may be too much for a laptop (although even if I'm just using it for extra real estate for web browsing and stuff, it shouldn't be that taxing, right?), but otherwise, I can't believe the heat it generates. After a certain point, I notice that the computer's performance starts to get very sluggish. I've started setting the laptop on a block of ice just to counteract this...the block has about the same area of the computer's base and is probably 1/2 inch thick. It melts completely in about 30-40 minutes.
The fans are functional, but they just don't seem to be enough. Does anyone know of a very good cooling pad/stand that may help with this? This ice situation is a little ridiculous. To be clear, I'm not doing something like playing Starcraft 2 on a dual monitor setup with iTunes and Photoshop running...what causes the heat is far less than that.

VictryRos here are corresponding screenshots for a two year old MacBook Air - a Mac far less capable than your MacBook Pro:
It's running Safari, with Flash running, as well as Firefox, in addition to iTunes, Pages, QuickTime Player and several other programs. It has the same amount of RAM as your MBP (4 GB) and it's loafing.
Whatever Chrome is doing, it's doing poorly. If you want your Mac to run well get rid of it.

  • Macbook Pro (R) Way Too Hot

I have a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina Display 15 inch and I've been having a problem with the fans running full blast and being very loud when I do simple activities such as watching a Youtube video on Chrome. When I check the activity moniter, it hovers around 50-80% CPU usage for Chrome Helper. I just contacted support and did an SMC reset. After that I installed something to check temperatures, and the CPU cores were over 100 degrees C while just watching a video. The fans run at almost 6000 RPM. This has not been an issue the whole time I've had the computer. I think it might have started when I installed Mavericks, but I'm not sure. The Apple support people on the phone told me that I should reinstall the OS, but I would like to avoid that because I have Bootcamp and a Windows partition on my computer as well. Is there anything else I can try to fix this? (Sorry if this is in the wrong place or anything. This is my first post because I am really confused and concerned by this problem)

  • Is it normal that my macbook pro cpu runs too hot?

I downloaded the smcfan control since my laptop was running too hot and I only bought it 3 days ago.
It says that my temperature goes up to 90c sometimes and it is too hot to even touch!!
I am a bit worried, I adjusted the fan settigs to higher rpm and it seems to help a lot, but why is it so the fans are not automatically adjusting when the temperature is so high? Is there something wrong with my laptop - I could still get it replaced with a new one since I just bought it..
    My specs are:
    MacBook pro 15" 2011
    i7 proccessor
    4GB or ram
    Thanks in advance!

194º F / 90c is the typical temperature if your doing a lot of heavy CPU load.
Check your Activity Monitor in your Utilities for any runaway processes.
If you first boot your machine and it gets these sort of tempertures with nothing else running, you very well indeed have a problem.
The average temperture using smcFanControl with default Apple fan speeds should be about 120º F cold boot, at idle/light load (just a simple browser window no video) CPU in a 78º F enviroment.
Iv'e bumped my minimum fan speed to 4000 RPM, and thus my smc reported temperture is about 100ºF for those same conditions.
If you way above these typical conditions (others report about the same) then yes I would uninstall smcFanControl and then take the machine in for a evaluation, you could have a dead fan or sensor, etc.

  • Laptop gets WAY TOO HOT !!

I have been getting emails for a while about a battery recall on my HP Pavillion laptop (dv6605us).  I check my battery numbers and it keeps telling me my battery is not affected.
Now my laptop is getting hot, the fan runs in overdrive almost non stop.  The latest is that it gets so hot it just shuts down.  I have removed the battery and it no longer shuts down and does not run as hot but still gets quite warm and the fan runs constantly.
I am brand loyal and I have been so happy with this laptop that I JUST bought a Pavillion Elite desktop, which was not cheap.  Now that my laptop is acting up I try to get some answers from HP and get it shoved up my {Content Removed: Language Filter Evasion} ?????
All the information I can get from a person I can not even understand is that my laptop is out of warranty and my battery is not on the recall list. BUT for $49.95 I can get my questions answered ????   I do not want to know how to hook up my Xbox to my computer I wanna know if this {Content Removed: Language Filter Evasion} thing is gonna burn my house down !!!!!  The product is performing excellent I have no technical problems at all, this is purely a safety issue.  My battery seems to be doing everything the recalled batteries were doing but mine doesnt happen to be on the list ????  I was told it is "old" and "batteries wear out" I can understand that if it wasnt holding a charge etc but not when it sets my house on fire.
Please dont tell me this is how a customer gets treated after his warranty expires.  I am already getting thoughts of regret for spending over $1000 on my new desk top.  If I wanted a disposable computer I would have paid a disposable price for it.
I buy quality items (or so I thought) and take care of them and USUALLY get trouble free service from them for many years.
Somebody tell me something or should I just either get rid of the thing or double up on my homeowners insurance ??
I spoke too soon, as I was writing this on my desktop the laptop shut off again on my wife with the battery removed.  I guess I should just unload the thing and go buy a cheap one from WaMart and move on.

I'm having the same problem.  Moreover, I was reading a different thread where the HP tech told the person to disconnect the battery, do a hard start and run from AC power.  I did that and it is STILL burning hot and crashing!  Mine is out of warranty and it probably needs a new motherboard.  Thanks so much HP!  My laptop cost $1,200 and lasted 3 years!?!?  My husband's Lenovo works FANTASTIC!!  We bought them at the same time and he's never had a single problem.  If I can't get any help and have to pay to replace the motherboard, I'm just going to switch manufacturer, and let everyone I meet know the amount of problems we've had with HP.  We also bought the desktop elite and I've had problems with that as well.  I can't express how disappointed I am with HP!

  • L connector to my MacBook Pro getting really really hot.

Is this o.k. or do I need to bet a new charger?  They are just so dang expensive.  Thank you.

Apple has allowed geniuses to have much more discretion with Power adapter issues that may have SAFETY Issues for customers.
Getting really hot could be considered a safety issue. Make an appointment to go see them (take ALL your stuff in) and maybe they will agree and replace it for you.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro getting so hot when I watch videos?

Yesterday, I bought an HDMI cable for my 2 year old Macbook Pro, and Samsung flat screen. I got this to watch HULU, now everytime I watch a video on Hulu, even if it's only less than a minute, but computer gets INSTANTLY hot! REALLY hot, don't ask me HOW hot, but WAY too hot for a computer, I have never had heating problems with this computer before.
I'm afraid to try and watch any more shows. What am I doing wrong? I really want to watch Hulu. On that note, I can't figure out how to get videos from my computer to play on my TV, but that's another matter.
I have no idea what operating system I have, just that it's a Snow Leopard.

What ever you do, DO NOT download any software that claims to 'clean' your MBP.
My suggestion is to upgrade your software.  I note you are at Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and 10.6.8 is available.
In addition do a bit of house cleaning on your HHD.  Trash old data that you don't use or no longer need.
Consider dusting off your original installation disks and perform an Apple hardware test using disk 2.  There may just be a hardware issue that you are not aware of (do this with all peripherals detached.
    Ciao.

  • My macbook pro gets very hot when running anything like games or videos

I just bought a macbook pro 2.3 GHZ i7 with retina display.  It gets very hot when running just about anything of substance.  When I run a game like candy crush, the temperature can get to 167 or more.  I installed istat menus and started monitoring it.  I did notice that the fans never went on but after istats I was able to make them come on.  Without having a game going, the temperatures hover around 100.  Once the game starts, it goes crazy.
I don't really know what the problem could be or if this is normal (it really can't be....This is way too hot).  I have owned the computer for about 2 months and I need to know what to do.

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • Why does my macbook pro get hot

Why does my Macbook pro get hot while I am only on my email account?  This is a recent change.  It gets too hot too put in my lap.  Is it a battery issue.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • My MacBook Pro gets really hot after I install OS X 10.10.3. Can Someone help?

After i install OS X 10.10.3 my macbook pro gets really hot. I don't know why. Someone has a solution?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My 13" MacBook pro gets really hot without extended or heavy usage

My 13" MacBook pro gets really hot without extended or heavy usage and the fan's noise is annoying, my friends say this is not normal
    Is it normal?
It gets really hot especially when there is flash content

I am also having what I feel are excessive temperatures and fans while doing nothing tasks like web browsing.
Can anyone tell me what the reasonable operating ranges are for the various components?
There is a program called "Tmperature Monitor" which is free and gives even more sensor readings than iStat Pro.
Why does flash make it so hot?  I have this problem too.
Also is it normal when connecting only one external display and just browsing the web for the GPU to be at 85-90C (194F)?
Any idea why iStat always shows a lower battery percentage than OSX?
    Thanks

  • My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • My macbook pro get littel hot

my macbook pro get hot near to charging slot when charging its not extremely hot but its warm is this normal or do i need to call apple

now, for your fan control - you can download and install smcFanControl if you want to use it.
set it at default speed and when you feel your Macbook is getting warmer - click on the smcfancontrol icon and select higher.
the best thing to do is to check your activity monitor and see what's using more than 10% of your CPU's resources under All Processes and in the %CPU section.
highlight the one's over 10% and hit quit process.
good luck - hope you get it sorted out...
