MacBook Pro Getting hot... what temperature should it maintain?

My MacBook Pro seems to be getting hot lately, the fans seem to 'idle' at around 2,200rpm, but the CPUA temperature is 65*C. This seems a little high to me. The temperature also seems to oscillate quite a bit. As i sit and type this, the fans have maintained 2,200rpm, but the temperature is starting to creep up to 68*C. It then goes above 70*C and the fans whiz up to 4,500 rpm or more until the CPU cools down again. Is this a firmware issue?

I have tried some tests, I could not beleive that I've never noticed the fans beforelast week and now they come on almost instantly. So I unplugged everything and turned the MBP on. This time, the fans were settled at below 2,000rpm, and the CPU temperature was 55*C. No fan noise, and noticably cooler chassis.
So I then started to plug things back in to see if they made any difference... power cable - no problem. iPhone - no problem. Firewire audio interface... ah ha!!! Temperature immediately starts to rise... reaching 65*C within minutes, with nothing else happening.
I did a few searches and found others with similar issues, however they were claiming it was an issue with the Firewire chip in the MBP. The people on such forums were complaining of an Agere chip.
So I restarted my MBP and hit COMMAND-S, the Firewire device mentioned in the text list was a Lucent ID 5901. So this appears to be a problem independant of the Firewire chip. Could it be an issue with the software? I have the latest drivers for my Firewire device (Presonus Firebox)

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Macbook Pro getting Hot very fast

When i use my macbook pro it begins to get very hot after watching a few youtube videos. I got iStats (trial) and found that it was getting to 170 farenheit ant that the fan was getting to 5000 rpm, i opened activity monitor and the highest CPU %used by a program is safari at 6% or something around there, what can/should i do??

It sounds like you might have a hardware problem. Your best bet is to go to the Genius Bar. The evaluation is free, and they'll fix it if you're under Applecare. Back up your stuff first though.

MacBook Pro getting hot quickly

I bought a MacBook Pro in November, and it seems to get hot very quickly. It is usually just sitting on a desk. It sounds like the fan is working, but I don't know a solution. I have a Speck case on it, but I don't think that would be an issue? Is this worth taking to the genious bar? ...I have AppleCare

It terms of heat retention, the Speck case is not doing any favors for your MBP. It will tend to hinder the dissipation of heat from the aluminum body of the MBP.
Download from the Internet iStat pro and install it. This will tell you the internal temperatures of your MBP and the fan speeds. When you believe that the MBP is 'hot', look at 'Activity Monitor' to determine the applications that are open, note them and then post back the data.
Note that your MBP does have heat sensors located inside that will shut the MBP down before any heat damage can occur. At this time, a trip to the genius bar is probably premature.

I'm having an issue with my MacBook Pro, it's getting very hot while just browsing the internet, and have the fans at the max!!
Is there a fix to this?

13" MacBook Pro right? Can't do anything, it's integrated graphics.
Download smcFan control, iStat and keep a eye on things for awhile, your idle CPU temps should be about 100-120º F.
The 15" and 17" you can turn off graphics swtiching in the Energy Saver System Preferences, that will cost a bit of battery life, but the machine will be cooler.

Late 2011 macbook pro getting hot and running slow, any ideas?

In the last week my macbook pro has been getting very hot (too hot to rest on knees) and sometimes running slow. It will often cool down after a while but the fan seems to be running more frequently as well. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

MacBook Pro getting hot in sleep mode

I have the latest MacBook Pro 15" retina. I've had it for about 4 months with no issues. Until recently. When I close the cover and put it in sleep mode it will get hot after a period of time (say over night). When I lift the cover I get no lights and no response. After about 15 minutes with the cover up and it plugged in, it seems to cool down and I can press the power button and it does a complete restart. Once I am able to get it back on I notice the iStats sensor says about 72 degrees (and that's after it has cooled down).
I don't use any high intensity applications like Photoshop. For example, this morning I put it to sleep with Safari, Mail, Calendar, Pages and Numbers open only for it to be hot an unresponsive by the time I got home in the evening.
Any ideas what could be going on?

I guess I could open one application at a time and put it in sleep mode to see what happens.
Yes, that is one way. You can also keep an eye out on the Console log data. If the computer is shutting down, then you need to see if it logs a kernel panic and post the log here: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Or you can make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service. This may be shorter in the long run than trying to discover the problem, especially because the computer is still in warranty.
You could also erase the drive and reinstall OS X:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

My MacBook Pro gets hot, where's the fan???

Anyone know when the fan in the MBP should turn on? I never hear my fan, but since I got addicted to an online game, I've noticed that my computer gets very hot to the touch on the bottom side (as you look at the bottom, the heat is coming mostly from the right upper corner area). (There IS a fan, right???) I've been reading threads here about overheating, and it sounds like games and laptops don't mix very well, and also that it's "normal" for the MBP to get hot. BUT, I've also been seeing everyone mention their fans. My computer has never shut down while I'm playing. Should I be worried about my silent fan?
This is a mid 2012 model, OS X 10.9.4. I'm not tech-savvy, so not sure what other info to add that might be helpful.

If this is the 15" model, then it has two graphic processors, the Intel that is normally used and a discrete gpu that comes in with some videos and games. When both are in use there is a lot of power consumed and a lot of heat produced. Also, under those conditions the cpu produces more heat because it is working harder. You will see all of this due to the fans running harder or faster.
Try using the MBP for low load type work, simple emailing, web surfing, word processing, things that do not put a load on the graphic system. Does it run hot or cool under those conditions? If it stays cool, then you are probably just seeing the added heat from pushing the system harder.
If it concerns you then visit an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test the system to see if it is producing too much hear or is normal.

Macbook Pro gets hot

I use MBP basically for Music creation / performance purpose. Using Logic Studio (Logic Pro & Mainstage) and connected to Pedal board Gio.
I noticed that MBP is getting hot very soon. I am maintaining a gap between the table & MBP so that air circulation remains but still its getting hot.
Is this normal to get hot, its actually get very hot and I am not confident about using it on stage while performing or recording continuously for 2-4 hours non-stop.
I am worried after investing so much on this MBP. Any help whats wrong happening or is it normal and I can continue working even if its hot or MORE precaution I have to take ? please help Apple Engineers...if you are reading this.

iStatmenu lets you have preset fan speeds on top of the system controlled speed adjustable from your menu and FanControl lets you change the speed of fan's at given temerature.
i'm currently using both at the same time on mine to keep full control of the fan's.

Late Macbook Pro getting hot and the fan is getting louder

My Macbook is getting very hot and the fan gets louder the longer I have my Macbook on.
It happens whenever and wherever I use it, I don't play games often as I use my Macbook for my Uni work.
Does anyone have any advice?

It would help if you indicated the EXACT model MBP that you have.
Perform a SMC reset:

If no success, open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low.
Download from the Internet a temperature monitoring app like Bresink:

Post images of both for inspection.
Open the MBP and look for dust an debris inside it, especially in the fans. Clean it out if necessary.

My MacBook Pro gets hot when I'm not doing much and when I watch YouTube videos the video skips, scrolling doe as well.

I bought the new, and my first MacBook Pro 13" a little over a month ago for college and love it, but have started to realize a couple problems I can't seem to solve. The bottom of the MacBook becomes very very hot in a short amount of time, and I really don't think I'm doing much to cause it. Another issue is while I watch a Youtube video in HD, even if it's completely loaded, it skips every so often and is slow and also makes my computer very hot. When I try to scroll up and down to view a web site, it also sometimes skips. I really never thought this would happen to Apple computers and hope someone can help me fix these problems! now, for your fan control - you can download and install smcFanControl if you want to use it.
set it at default speed and when you feel your Macbook is getting warmer - click on the smcfancontrol icon and select higher.
the best thing to do is to check your activity monitor and see what's using more than 10% of your CPU's resources under All Processes and in the %CPU section.
highlight the one's over 10% and hit quit process.
