Macbook Pro Good for Video Work?

Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if the Higher end 15" or 17" Macbook Pro would be adequate for video editing with FCP? Does anyone use laptops for video editing? I previously used a 2007 MBP and it wasn't very good with rendering and real time playback.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I don't do much video work myself but I have a pool of users who do that I support on campus. I asked one of them after seeing your post and this is the response I got:
+I definitely recommend to the user to get the machine with 512MB of VRAM and upgrade to 8GB if it's a production machine where time is money. While the 17s we have get the job done, they're not our primary production units, they're our mobile, "in the field" units for quick touch up or editing work. We have a series of Mac Pros that do the majority of our work and given the price vs. performance comparison between a Mac Pro and a 17" MacBook Pro the Mac Pro far exceeds the portability advantage.+
Hope that helps.

  • Is the MacBook Pro good for typing papers in college?

I am looking at getting a MacBook Pro with retina display for college, but is it useful for typing papers??

It's not so much the hardware but rather the proper software that you need. I suggest using Microsoft Word - some people prefer other word processors, but Word can do everything and more than you will need and it's particularly good at APA styles and templates - you can create your own templates or download templates from the Internet that will work cross-platform.
Word for Mac is so full-featured that, as I said, it has features that you may never need, but if you do need them, they're there.
I'm beginning to have a preference for Word for Windows in Office 2013. But there is supposed to be a Office 2014 for Mac coming out later this year and I'm betting that it's going to look a lot like the Windows version.
    Good luck,

  • Best 17" Macbook Pro Configuration for Video Editing?

I'm just about to buy a new 17" Macbook Pro.
Should I select 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200rpm or the 500GB...? I have no clue what the difference is.
I will occasionally be mobile, traveling, eight days in November, weekends now and then, but not every week. Video editing with FCE4.
Any recommendations, CONFIDENT recommendations? I can only afford the 4GB. Other than that, I'm game.

    Should I select 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200rpm or the 500GB...?
    Hi,
If you are purchasing the mid-2009 MacBook Pro I would stay with the stock 500GB. The 7200 RPM model seems to have issues according to user reports.

As far as external storage, I use the FirmTek SeriTek/2EN2.

It is available as a bundle here: http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata2ensm2e.html
The reason I like the SeriTek/2EN2 is that it has hot swap bays and uses a pure native SATA interface. This provides the fastest performance available and the best compatibility with eSATA ExpressCards.
If you are looking for even faster ExpressCard performance with the SeriTek/2EN2 check out the Sonnet Tempo Pro: http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/pro-expresscard/

  • Is Macbook Pro good for me?

I'm student almost graduated and I use computer to write documents, use formulas (average, standard desviation, math, statistical formulas, presentation files. Of course, internet websites.
hmm Planning to buy my first mac computer Macbook Pro 15'. There is some limitation for it? Any incompatibility websites? or documents layouts? like open microsoft office file in openoffice?
    Thanks for help me

I just asked it because Microsoft Office for windows is the one most important software for me. If in macbook pro I can realize all of stuff available on msoffice.
If you don't want to buy Office for Mac (which some users say is better than Office for Windows) you can use Bootcamp and run Windows. Remember, on a Mac, you can switch between Windows or Mac software.
So if you want to use Windows only on the Mac, you can. But honestly, most Windows users find they like Mac software and can leave behind WIndows with no regrets at all. Especially as, in using only Mac software, they don't have worry about viruses and such. You don't have to surrender Windows if you don't want to, but you might want to play on a Mac before you buy it and see if you like the software, as that is very much a part of buying a Mac, getting and using its marvelous software.

  • Best Macbook Pro 15" for photo editing?

    Hi,
I have to get a MacBook Pro 15" for my work. I'm a photographer, so I will be editing a lot of images with Photoshop, Aperture, plug-ins, etc. + I will connect a large external monitor to it.
I will also have to edit some videos in FCP but not much, and recording some audio using Logic.
My two choices are: MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz (i5) or 2.66 GHz (i7). From what I understood the 2.53 GHz (i5) is not really worthed, since there is almost no difference with the 2.4 GHz.
I was wondering if in your opinion the better graphics of the 2.66 GHz could make a big difference to me.
I don't play any games on my mac.
Thank you so much for your advises
    Have a good day
    Luca

I think you will find the only difference with the Nvidia graphic card between the i5 and i7 is the i5 have 256mb less dedicate vedio RAM than the i7 model. This mades no difference for the tasks you listed.
Both i5 and i7 can display resolution upto 2560 X 1600, so you can connect it to a 30 inch monitor without any problem.
I agree with you the 2.4Ghz model is a good choice, you can use the rest of the money for 6 to 8Gb of RAM upgrade.
The i7 in my MBP only get pushed to the limit when I test software in multiple vitural windows. Most time incl working in Photoshop CS4 in virtual Windows 7, the cpu only operate around 30%. So I don’t think you will notice any performance difference with the 2.4Ghz model.

  • Is a macbook pro advisable for system engineer to work and study with?

im going to study system engineer and i want to buy a new laptop for my career, so ive been thinking in a macbook pro, but i heard that its not advisable because in system engineer you need to download and work with advanced pogramms that cant be downloaded in mac os x.
soo. is it advisable to me?

A MacBook Pro is a fine computer, but it depends on the policy of the school you will be attending. Some schools say, "any computer will work fine" others say, "We use software that only runs on one kind of computer." So you really need to ask your school.
Engineering in general seems to be old-fashioned in the techniques and tools that they use. That they are getting anything new accomplished is sometimes astonishing. You will probably have four semesters of Calculus to learn before they let you do anything really interesting. And during that time, you will have English and History papers to write. Macs are very good for that work as well.
If you will be doing work in another Language as well as English, Macs can switch quickly between them, and surf the web and print in other languages really easily as well.

Many apps are not completely removed if the .app file is trashed (which is what I believe you've done so far).
If you don't want to dig through the system to manually remove library files, I recommend the use of AppCleaner, which does the job for you.

    Hi Nott.
RamCash let you allow to set priority on Writing, Latency and some Others important details.
If you have the same CPU and GPU as I have we can start making sure this:
    Your CPU is o.c. @ 4.7ghz or+.
GPU o.c.930mghz" this improve my time approx 7 sec."
Use 10gb of ram for ramcache, set latency on 10, and set writing priority.
Please let me know what HardD config you have and I will do with it.

  • Macbook pro to HDTV, video is working but audio is not working, how to make audio work as well

Macbook pro to HDTV, video is working but audio is not working, how to make audio work as well

If you use an HDMI cable, the audiostream will be integrated, so there will be sound when using an HDMI cable!
Not necessarily.  That only works as stated if you have one of the most recent MBP's that has a built-in HDMI port.
If the MBP only has a Thunderbolt or miniDisplayPort, you need an appropriate adapter cable and even if you use an HDMI adapter or cable to connect to your HDTV there is no guarantee it will carry audio.  You have to determine if your specific MBP model supports audio out through its miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output, and whether the adapter does likewise.

  • Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?

Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Which mac (or macbook) is good for programming ?

Hi,which mac (or macbook) is good for programming ? i want for iOS and mac programming, also i want to make 3D models-objects

If you are going to do a fairly heavy load of 3D modeling I would go with a Mac Pro with as much memory as you can afford.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macpro?mco=MTg5MTY5NDQ
If you aren't a heavy 3D modeler, but will be doing so a significant amount of time than this would work:
    http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC511LL/A?mco=MTg1ODA4MDM
If 3D modeling is only an occasional requirement you could go with one of the new MacBook Pros:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macbookpro?mco=MTkyMTUzNjk
All of them will handle your programming needs.

  • Why won't my macbook pro play youtube videos?

Why wont my macbook pro play youtube videos????
I bought this over the summer and it's now Nov 28th. I've had it with this thing and nobody is answering my question! Please help!
I reset safari, emptied my cache, cleared my history, uninstalled and re-installed flash player and nothing has helped. In fact, un/reinstalling flash player worsened the problem. And I cannot update it becuase it says "not recognized".
I do have avast anti-virus: but I can't fix the warnings in it (after I scan, some warnings popup and it wont let me fix it and I have no idea where to find it in the computer itself). Does this have anything to do with it? I need virus protection, so I dont want to get rid of it.
I do not have the money to buy firefox (and it's never worked for me ever anyways).
I know it's not my internet because my dad's pc works great and my sister's mac (for school) loads youtube videos instantly.
I also have this annoying issue where every page on the interned needs to be reloaded three times before itll load the first time. It sits there for five minutes and does nothing, then I reload the page and BAM its loaded: EXCEPT YOUTUBE.
For a $1400 machine, I'd like to know what and why this is happening.

Perhaps there is something wrong with your software and/or a corrupt cache file outside of the browser.
I reset safari, emptied my cache, cleared my history, uninstalled and re-installed flash player and nothing has helped. In fact, un/reinstalling flash player worsened the problem. And I cannot update it because it says "not recognized".
Hmm hard to tell what's causing this. May have to do a process of elimination to cure everything on the machine.

Uninstall the anti-virus, they always cause issues on Mac's.
You say you need anti-virus, so install the free ClamXav, it's a program you run as you need it, because 99% of the malware out there is for Windows and won't run on a Mac, thus you can just run ClamXav when you need it on where you need it. Won't bugger up the machine.
I do not have the money to buy firefox (and it's never worked for me ever anyways).
Firefox is a free web browser by the open source community, it's very powerful and highly customizable with more add-ons, extensions, personas, themes than any other browser. Some things  can be done on Firefox can't be done on any other browser at all. Certainly for someone who is a bit more seasoned to use it fully.

You mentioned your "dad" and you've mentioned a delay loading pages and not YouTube at all.
Are you by any chance the Administrator of the computer? Can you install Firefox if you wanted too just as a experiment or does it ask for a Admin name and password and you can't provide it?
"Nannyware" has the ability to block sites and slow down page draws as it's consulting with the nannyware company if that site is suitable to be loaded on your machine.
If your are the Admin of the machine, then your going to have to methodically go through the fix it list I've generated here to resolve your issue as I cant' tell what's causing your problem specifically behind a screen.
If it's too much for you, take the machine to a local Mac/PC software repair shop and they can fix you up.
I suspect by #12 your machine will be fixed.

I would like to run a stock analysis program called Toolkit 6 on my Macbook Pro, but it only works on the Windows platform.  Is there software that allows me to run Windows applications on the Mac?

Yes it's MS Windows! You will need a license of MS Windows (preferable Windows 7) and from there you can decide on the strategy for running Windows on your iMac. You can use Boot Camp (you already have this) or you use virtualization software such as Parallels or Fusion. For your situation I'd recommend virtualization software. However for only one program I'd do some due diligence to see if there is a OS X version. You can start with the App store or simply use Google to search.
