Macbook Pro had blue screen of death.  Now hard drive wont wake up.  HELP!  Computer keeps freezing and crashing.

About a month ago, the "beach ball" appeared on my screan.  I rebooted the computer only to a blue screen.  Was instructed to Safe Boot and repair my files.  I got the computer to let me in.  My only problem now is, when i open the mac, my hard drive does not make the wake up noise?  Im not so computer savey so im not sure what im experiencing.  My mac also sees the "beach ball" on occasion followed by it freezing and me having to hard reboot it.  What am i experienceing?!  Also when computer is booting up, a black screen with white lettering jimbo-jamble appears for a solid 30 seconds to a minute.  I am worrying because my macbook was bought refurbished about a year ago, never had ANY problems, and JUST LIKE THAT...i got a world of issues.

My mac also sees the "beach ball" on occasion followed by it freezing

What is the maximum size of hard drive and speed for an internal hard drive to my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2009), please?
I bought myself a Technics 1TB, 7200 rpm internal hardrive. Made a clone successfully in Super Duper.
It fits, but It is not available for starting up my Macbook Pro. Not available in System Prefs, but visible and grey in Disc Utility.
Although it starts up my Mac Pro just fine.. but not my Macbook Pro.
Is there a limit of hard drive specifics?

  • My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

    Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
    Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
    Thanks,
    Nat

I have been trying to update my software in my macbook pro, but every time I go through the motions of updating/restarting my computer nothing happens and it still shows I need a software update. Anyone know why this is happening?

How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?
Check out the following & do the necessary:
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
    Try SU again.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

    Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.

  • New MacBook getting the "Blue Screen of Death" equivalent

So I just snagged a macbook from my school's bookstore.
I've gotten the "you need to restart your computer message" that shows up in 5 languages or so twice already in the first day. i.e. the Mac equivalent of the Windows "Blue Screen of Death". I believe its called a "Fatal Error".
I don't remember what I was trying to do the first time (I /think/ I was attempting to browse my network from the sidebar in Finder), but the second I was trying to get a program called Studiometry (http://www.oranged.net/studiometry/) to connect to my iMac and sync the program's database. I was already connected via Finder (Go >> Connect to Server). When I chose "connect to server" in Studiometry a second after it attempted to connect--Kaboom! I can't get the program to connect, but that doesn't concern me: I'm more worried about keeping this suspect machine.
Other than playing with the pre-installed stuff (iLife, PhotoBooth, etc.) I have:
    1. Installed Windows XP SP2 with Boot Camp
    2. Used http://www.logmein.com/ to remote in from OS X on my MacBook to Windows Vista Ultimate at work.
    3. Installed Studiometry
There is nothing else I have done that doesn't come in the box.
I had a PowerBook give me grief the first week and the bum crashed on me pretty hard. Not interested in that again and I'm thinking of taking this back for a new one. Ugly babies usually get cute in a month or two, but ugly computers typically don't.
    Any suggestions?

Ever since I started paying attention to battery power v. adapter, all have occurred on battery power and none while the adapter was plugged in. (The first two I don't know, but all the rest were on battery).
One of them actually happened while I was sending a file using Bluetooth from my iMac (still probably airport though since it was on).
While this is fun and all, I'm taking this bugger back and exchanging for a new one. Apple can have a blast troubleshooting this for a refurb. :P

  • Freeze Blue screen of death Now just boots to CMOS

Hi, a short while ago my laptop froze and I could not do anything other than turn it off.
When I turned it on again it just sat on the MSI logo. After a while I got the blue screen of death. It gave an error code but I was away home home with no way on noting it. It suggested putting the CD I got with the laptop in to run a recovery programme.
Upon getting home I tried this (with the only CD I had) but it did nothing. The laptop just continuously boots to the CMOS. I set the CD drive as the primary boot but that changed nothing.
On booting there is a flash of two small screens of text but it it far to fast to read, before the CMOS loads.
I'm assuming there has been a hardware failure (hard drive?).
Has anyone any ideas on what I should do now?
    Cheers.

Since you have a Windows bootable CD, I would suggest you trying BIOS update. Boot from your Windows CD and access command prompt. Run winflash tool to update your system BIOS. The command you need is afuwinx64.exe XXX.XXX /p /b /n /r (Replace XXX.XXX with your BIOS file)

  • Blue Screen of death - now can't load Windows (even in safe mode)

Last night laptop (Satellite L500 19Z; Win 7 64 bit) crashed whilst playing CIV4. Got a blue screen of death; before I had chance to read any of the error messages on it the machine rebooted.
It loaded windows in safe mode fine then, and informed me as it had loaded safe mode OK the problem will be related to some recently installed software and I should uninstall programs I'd installed until it would load normally. As it was late last night I shut down and thought I'd sort it in the morning (in retrospect this may have been a mistake ....).
Today, when the machine tries to boot up it attempts a Startup Repair; unfortunately this fails every time and it says "Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot detemine the cause of the problem"
I looked at the log it produces but it passes all the individual tests.
I also can't access the advanced options for system recovery & support, which appears on the Startup Repair dialog box as it demands I be logged in, which apparently I'm not (presumably as the machine never got to the windows login screen before trying the startup repair). The error message reads "you must be logged in to access system recovery options. If you are having trouble logging in please contact your computer administrator for assistance. please click OK to restart the computer."
I've had a go at booting into the various advanced options (safe mode, safe mode with command prompt etc. but the outcome is the same).
I also tried the Repair your Computer option from the advanced boot options screen, but after the screen where it asks you to choose the language and keyboard, I get the same login error mentioned above.
Is there a way to repair or even run the hard disk based windows recovery (haven't got the recovery DVD with me as I'm away from home for a couple weeks) without logging into windows? I would have expected there to be but have yet to figure out how to do it.
(there are no disks in the disk drive, no other devices attached to the laptop - I've tried it with mains power and with the battery and have not noticed any differences)
    Thanks
    James

Normaly the reinstall data is on a separate part on your HD, not in Windows.
The register is only used for Windows.
If it doesn't work you can always try to reinstall from a DVD later.
It does mean all your data on C:\ will be gone. If you can hook your HD on an other PC you can try to safe your work with a recover prog.

  • Persistent blue screen of death problems on Toshiba laptop pc; need help

    hey, guys,
I was hoping you could help me out here.  I have been experiencing persistent blue screen of death problems on my Toshiba laptop since December 21 of 2014.  The first two times I started having theses persistent issues, I downloaded a bunch of redundant programs and games onto my computer, some of which were virus infected.  I had these programs on my computer for a while before my laptop was taken in for repairs.  I eventually uninstalled some unnecesssary programs from my pc, hoping it would have fixed these issues, even tried windows update.  I didn't have a clue that my problems were due to virus infections/malware until the two most recent times my computer was taken in for repairs; I had always been thinking it was a defective driver.  My laptop has already been in for repairs at least twice due to these perpetual BSOD problems; I had Norton Internet Security installed on my pc before the Geek Squad team (who repaired my computer and found 312 traces of malware in my system during the virus test; I was told by them that I had mistakenly downloaded infected web browsers onto my pc) switched me to Webroot SecureAnywhere (they said it was better at detecting viruses/malware than my NIS), but even after my pc has been through repairs twice in a row, I am still experiencing blue screens (this only seems to have happened once each week, and on one occasion, I went through almost two weeks without it occurring).  I am pretty sure, that I haven't downloaded anything onto my computer infected with viruses/malware (each of the scans done by my Webroot antivirus have found nothing), I have only a few games/apps installed on my pc, and what I downloaded all came from Microsoft's official website.  I can't afford to be wasting any more money on repairs, and I am desperately searching for any possible way to fix this myself.  Any help would be appreciated.  I have a copy of two of the memory dumps from my most recent crashes (I also have the dump reports from my most recent crashes dating back to March 6; I got these from an app from NirSort called Blue Screen View, if you need those)  I also have my system specs:
    http://1drv.ms/1I6AsaE
    http://1drv.ms/1Qdsb7T
Note that many of these earler dump reports (the ones from March) came from viruses.  The ones from most recently as last month, I am not sure about.

Thrashing about this way gets us nowhere.
Best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents.
Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery tab > Recovery tab > Remove everything and reinstall Windows
Use the freshly restored machine for a day or so before any installations of hardware, software, or updates of any kind. If you get no crashes, the problem is not likely due to hardware.
Then add updates and other things slowly, keeping track of them. If you get crashes after that, give us the corresponding dmp files.

  • Blue Screen of Death when syncing with iTunes. Please HELP!

I have noticed a few others experiencing this problem as well.
    http://www.everythingiphone.com/forum/windows-pc-and-iphone/blue-screen-error-wh en-i-plug-the-phone-into-my-xp-laptop-3038.html
Aside from the (don't use windows XP comments), does anyone have any information on this? I have emailed Apple a couple times but have gotten no answer back yet.
What is happening is that when I plug in my iphone to itunes a "Digital Still Camera" pops up in the system tray and then blue screen of death appears. Some people have said that all you have to do is delete all your photos and it will sync, but does anyone have any other suggestions without having to delete all my photos anytime I want to sync?
Thanks for the help in advance.

The first response was correct, the computer (xps 1210) used a logitech camera driver that I did not recognize so I deleted it. The software was still active and crashed the computer. Fix was reinstall logitech software and driver. Updating the driver would have probably worked. Thank you!

  • Blue screen of death if external drive is attached

My mac hangs on the light blue screen if my external firewire drive is attached. if I unplug it, even during the hang, the computer starts up.

What brand/model is the drive? Is it bus powered or does it have its own external power supply brick? Have you tried it on another machine? Does it only have a FireWire connection or is there a USB port to try?

  • Macbook Pro keeps freezing and crashing

    I have a 2012 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.5 with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB of memory, and a Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.
I have had the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 installed on this computer since I got it and have always used it without a problem. But last night, after running Photoshop for a couple hours, the computer suddenly froze with the little dash wheel thing spinning in the bottom middle of the screen. Then, it rebooted itself. Tonight, it has just happened again although I had been running Photoshop for less time.
I don't know if Photoshop is the problem or something else. I'm currently running a Sophos scan but it hasn't found anything yet. What else can I do to try to diagnose the problem?

Since your Macbook pro freezes and crashes, so try out these steps.
    1) Reset PRAM and NVRAM
First shut down your computer. Locate the keys Cmd+Option+P+R keys and then turn on. Now press and hold all the keys until you heard the start up sound for three times.
    2) Then Restart in safe mode
Here make sure the computer is shut down. Then press the power button. As if you hear the startup tone, press and hold the shift key. And then release it when you see the grey Apple logo and let the Mac boot.
    3) At last run disk utility in Single user mode
Turn your Mac off and on. Then press the Command key +S keys simultaneously and press the below command:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If the above command do not runs, then type fsk -fy and hit run. Then the disk utility should run and will finish. If it finishes with no error, type reboot and hit run. The Mac will boot then.
    Hope this helps you out.

    Hi cterry66,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you would like to reset the user account password on your computer but do not know the original password. If you set up your Apple ID with that user account, you can use that Apple ID to reset your OS X user password. Please use the information provided in the attached article to complete the process.
