If you have any doubts, download OmniDiskSweeper from the Internet (free) and open it.  It will show all of your files on your HDD and their respective sizes.

  • Macbook Pro hard disk full, how do i store Movie files externally

I have just freed some space, as I was unable to add any new files or Apps.
How can i store my movies elsewhere? i am not bothered about a back up copy, just another storage area. I use them and play via PS3.
I think i have used about 250gb on my Internal HD.
So I bought a 2TB Buffalo Ext hard drive but cant make the Mac talk to it.

Are these movies in your iTunes library?  If so, you can move the iTunes library to an external volume in the Finder and use iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced to change the location in iTunes.  Also, note that if they are movies purchased from the iTunes Store, you only get one download...  so you'll want to keep them backed up, or if something happens to them, you'll have no choice other than to repurchase them (or not have them anymore)!
If they're not part of your iTunes library, just copy them over to the external drive and delete them from the external.

Well then when you erased your hard drive, your erased the Recovery partition, also.
Use Internet Recovery to either restore from your Time Machine backup or reinstall the OS if you don't have a TM Backup.
It will install the OS that shipped on that Mac. You can then upgrade via the App Store.

I can't find iDvD on my Macbook Pro...running OSX Lion...how can I get it?

IDVD is sold separately.  (There are no realistic alternatives to iDVD.)
You'll find it on the iLife 11 disc. Once installed Apple's website will update it to the latest version automatically.

    Hi All,
I was given a macbook pro with parallel windows, and later windows was remove but hard disk space is greyed out and could not be merge and when i run a 'verify disk' it told me to reformat my OS. The nearest service centre is real far away from me and i hope to solve this on my own. I need to keep my applications and files, how do i do so? As some of these applications was given by my company. I need help on keeping my files and reformating.
    Thanks in advance.

Get an external drive and make a clone of your internal, erase the internal, set it for 1 partition (OSX Journaled) and restore the clone.

  • How can i format my MacBook Pro hard disk and recover my data from time capsule?

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro is running slow, more and more. Everything started with the "upgrade" to Lion.
Can I re-format my hard disk and recover from Time Capsule only the data and applications I really need (including Snow Leopard as OS, maybe)?
    Thanks

The problem is that it is a Western Digital 3.5 inch internal hard drive housed inside a hard drive caddy. So the only way to connect it to my computer is through a dock.

  • MacBook Pro hard disk upgrade shows question mark folder

I recently bought a 1TB hard disk for my teenaged daughter's MacBook Pro.
I formatted it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the existing drive. I even made sure to create the recovery partition.
I restarted while holding the option key and chose the new drive.  It booted fine so I checked in System Preferences to make sure it was selected as the boot device.
I opened the case and swapped the drives. Put it back together and restarted only to see the question mark folder!
I tried booting while holding the option key and now I get the choose a network prompt.
I am desperate and hate the thought of disappointing my daughter. It used to be that I was her hero who could fix anything now I'm the guy who asks too many questions and doesn't put enough money on her debit card. Granted she busts her butt getting awesome grades and I was upgrading her drive so she could continue her video yearbook for her school. So I shouldn't complain but it would be great to be her hero again.
BTW, I am not a newbie to the tech world but I don't do nearly as much in the Apple arena as I do in the PC world.  Then again I've been a senior tech in the industry sine before IBM had a PC.  In fact, my first real work was on a 6502 processor that used the same machine code as the Rage of the day, the Apple ][. All that to say I usually can find my way around a problem but this one has me stumped.
    I appreciate any assistance offered.
    Thanks,
    Thom

I tried to reboot with the option, command P. And R keys pressed.  I heard the ding several times it still showed the question mark!  I also tried the shift option and it only displayed the network selection. Also I tried to press C so I could boot from USB and it didn't work either.
If I cannot get this to work I fear my only other choice is to use a FireWire enclosure. This isn't a good option as my daughter does mostly movie work and iMovie has this terrible "feature" that forces all movies to be stored in one place. It sure would be handy if it allowed movie projects to set the storage location individually.  I suppose I could simply move all the movies to the drive and try to find a way to point all iMovie projects to the external drive.
Unfortunately,  my daughter is one of those Mac users who isn't savvy enough to use anything but the default settings. Heck I've tried to explain to her that she ought to get rid of the big files once she has done her work.  That's why her drive is always full.

  • MacBook Pro not charging after OSX Lion 10.7.2 upgrade

After making the upgrade to OSx Lion 10.7.2 my MacBook Pro 2011 (2 months old) does not charge anymore, before worked perfectly.
Magsafe led was off, and battery indicator said power source is not connected. After the battery drained to empty, the magsafe turned on, but goes green to orange to off in cycles. During the cycles, the battery indicator was cycling also from calculating, not charging, etc. and the display was dimming like if I was plugin in and plugin off the magsafe connector. After having the computer connected during all night, now is charged but magsafe does not charge anymore.
I tried the SMC reset and chacked that firmware is up to date. Any clues of what is going on?

Thanks a lot for replying, but what exactly does the istat widget program do?
Also, the fan noise seems like a normal noise every time I launch a program, but it's getting to the point where I am frustrated(annoyed) of the fan noise. I would've thought that upgrading to a Mac book would cause less fan noise because of it's high processor. Sometimes I feel like I should go back to a Dell or HP because of this problem, but at the same time, I love my laptop. ;)

  • Any way to stop new MacBook Pro hard disk from making loud noise??

I received a brand new MacBook Pro today, and I thought everything was fine. However, when I went to use it in a very quiet room late at night, I noticed an almost unbearable noise coming from the right side of the trackpad. From reading previous discussions, I realize that it is likely the hard disk which is making the noise, and a design flaw makes the noise seem louder.
For other people who have the same problem, is there anything that can be done to make the noise go away?

You can return it for a replacement within 14 days of purchase.

  • Can I upgrade MacBook Pro hard disk drive next year?

Hi there!  I'm new to the Apple Support Communities!
I am going to buy a new 13" MacBook Pro, 2.5GHz.  I am going to buy the base model, with a 500GB 5400 RPM hard disk drive.  Right now, I can't afford a 256GB solid-state drive, but I'll have enough for one by later next year.  So, I will have done some stuff on my Mac by the time I can upgrade it. I know how to install the drive itself, but how do I transfer my information?
    Here are the issues:
    1) I don't know how I would make it so I could boot from an external USB.
    2) And I don't know how to get all my personal information from one drive to the other.
For "2", I think I could back up my Mac to a hard drive with Time Machine, and then restore from a backup.  But Time Machine couldn't back up the whole OS, right?  And what would the procedure be anyway?  Just turn it on when I'm done the upgrade?
If someone who has done this before could provide step-by-step instructions, I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Solid-State Me 

Yes you can replace the hard drive at any time.  Purchase a replacement drive from any store you like - newegg or mcetech are good stores (among many others) - and when you purchase the new drive, also purchase a drive enclosure.  Then download a program called "super duper" and follow the instructions to use that software.  When your drive arrives, put the new drive in the enclosure, plug it in to your computer and run "super duper" with the option to "make the drive bootable" and let it finish.  What it's doing is copying your drive onto the new drive.  Once the copy is finished, you can shut down your computer, remove the drive, install the new one, and put the original drive into the enclosure.  Now you have an external hard drive that is repurposed instead of throwing it away.  Keep that drive intact for a few weeks without erasing or adding data to be sure you are happy with the new drive and how it performs.  After that, use the drive to store files, backup the internal, transfer stuff, whatever.

  • Erase MacBook Pro hard disk. How? "Erase Disk" is grayed out.

I want to use Disk Utility to erase my HDD on MacBook Pro. BUT the Erase disk is greyed out. I checked user account and unlocked the padlock for my Admin account. What next please?

Remember to press the 'C' key to boot on the Snow Leopard disk (or set the boot disk from Preferences -> Startup disk)...
Also, if you want to install the OS on an external Hard Disk, format it GUI (check the help for instructions).

  • Replacing MacBook Pro hard disk

Hi to all. I found on the web tutorials about replacing hard-disk on the MacBook but nothing about MacBook Pro! Is this operation very difficult or much more difficult that on the MacBook? Anyone is able to indicate me haw to do or a tutorial? I would like to replace my 80GB with a 160GB HD.
Thank you to all of you!

sorry I can't offer any direct advice. but I think the reason why it's easier and there is user info on how to swap out the drives in the macbook is because they are the first apple notebook to have a drive designed to be replaceable by the user, AFAIK. it's ironic, but the macbook pro is not designed with a user-swapabble drive, so that's prob why you're having trouble finding a guide to do it. also be aware that opening the machine voids your warranty. that said, I have heard of people that took their MBP in to a computer service place to have the drive replaced, so if you don't find out how to do it yourself, you could try taking it somewhere. btw, my grandmother came from varese..

  • Macbook Pro hard disk has gone

I got the spinning beachball on my MacBook Pro 15" Intel Core2 unibody 2009 OS X 10.6 and then crash.
I zapped PRAM and did Disk Utiliy from Install disk but no hard disk to be seen.
I took out HD and put it in external USB drive, it works perfectly (I can even boot and great, no data loss)
I tried brand new HD inside the Macbook and this can't be seen either.
    Help!

Likely something major unless you're lucky and it's a cable (do they have those in MBPs?)  If it's out of warranty and you're comfortable poking around inside of computers you could investigate, otherwise take it to somebody who does know computers.

  • MacBook Pro hard disk noise, froze and wont boot

I was using my MacBook Pro and it froze at the same time I could hear the hard drive cracking. The following are guesses because of the sounds I was hearing: While the hard disk made cracking noises, it would stop spining. Then it started to spin again and another crack would stop the spining.
I held down the power button to shut down and now it wont boot. I can hear the same type of noises I described before.
    Thanks for the help

Based on your comments, your HDD is dead.  Get a new one, larger and faster if can afford it and swap in your MBP.  You will have to reinstall your OS and I hope you have a back up of your data.
    Caio.

  • Macbook Pro Hard disk Makes an annoying sound (buzz) while working but functions properly.

I've got this Macbook Pro 13 inch 2.4 Intel core i5 processor. After about a year the hard disk without any reason started to make an annoying sound (buzzing) while working that sometimes quiets down but when I move the laptop it starts all over again !! Also when I put it down on a side like on my bed while I'm lying on the bed it makes the same sound !! Like when I move the laptop I can hear the buzzing sound changing !! The hard disk functions pretty well though!! What's the problem? I tried Verifying and Reparing the Disk as my father suggested and that helped a bit but after like 10 minutes it's starts again. Any ideas? Have you guys ever seen such a thing before? What should I do?

I have the same issue you're having.
When it first happened (soon after I bought my late 2013 15" MBP), eventually my motherboard and Retina display crashed and needed to be replaced. Now after a couple of months being repaired, I started getting the same clicking sounds opening web browsers or apps, etc. I'm worried its the same thing with the motherboard and or retina display starting to fail again.
Im going to have it checked out however like you said, It's hard to replicate on the spot.
Please LMK if you have any updates on the cause and I'll do the same.
    Thanks!
